Surface Plasmonic Core-Shell Nanostructures in Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering and Photocatalysis.

Core-shell nanostructures are a typical material design. Usually, it consists of a core wrapped in a shell. It has attracted much attention due to its tunable structure and composition, high surface area, and high programmability. The properties and resonance frequency of their surface plasmons can be adjusted by regulating the shape, size, and composition of metal core-shell nanostructures. This interaction makes core-shell nanostructures an excellent platform for plasmon-enhanced optical effects. This Perspective explores the categories of core-shell nanostructures, their exchanges with excitons in two-dimensional materials, their spectrum-enhanced aspects, and prospects for future applications of core-shell nanostructures.

Quantum entanglement between excitons in two-dimensional materials

The quantum entanglement between two excitons in two-dimensional materials, embedded in an optical microcavity, was investigated. The energy eigenstates of a Jaynes-Cummings like Hamiltonian for two qubits coupled to a single cavity mode have been calculated. The quantum entanglement between such states was estimated by calculating the concurrence between two qubits in each of these eigenstates. According to the results of our calculations, if the system is allowed to decay only through the emission of cavity photons at low temperatures, there is a maximally entangled eigenstate, protected from decay. We demonstrated that the existence of such a state results in the counter-intuitive conclusion that, for some initial states of the system, the fact that the cavity is leaky can actually lead to an increase in the average concurrence on the timescales of the average photonic lifetime. In addition, we calculated the time evolution of the concurrence between a pair of excitons in a strained graphene monolayer.

First-Principles Study of the Optical Dipole Trap for Two-Dimensional Excitons in Graphane.

Recent studies on excitons in two-dimensional materials have been widely conducted for their potential usages for novel electronic and optical devices. Especially, sophisticated manipulation techniques of quantum degrees of freedom of excitons are in demand. In this Letter we propose a technique of forming an optical dipole trap for excitons in graphane, a two-dimensional wide gap semiconductor, based on first-principles calculations. We develop a first-principles method to evaluate the transition dipole matrix between excitonic states and combine it with the density functional theory and GW+BSE calculations. We reveal that in graphane the huge exciton binding energy and the large dipole moments of Wannier-like excitons enable us to induce the dipole trap of the order of meV depth and μm width. This Letter opens a new way to control light-exciton interacting systems based on newly developed numerically robust abinitio calculations.

Theoretical Methods for Excitonic Physics in 2D Materials

Excitons in two-dimensional materials have become an exciting research topic due to their peculiar interaction with the electromagnetic radiation and their observation at room temperature. In the literature, there are different approaches to deal with the calculation of the excitonic states and their electromagnetic response. In the Perspective article by Maurício F. C. Martins Quintela, Nuno M. R. Peres, and co-workers (article number 2200097), some of these approaches are reviewed.

Efficient ionization of two-dimensional excitons by intense single-cycle terahertz pulses

External electric fields are highly attractive for dynamical manipulation of excitons in two-dimensional materials. Here, we theoretically study the ionization of excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) by intense pulsed electric fields in the terahertz (THz) regime. We find that THz pulses with realistic field strengths are capable of ionizing a significant fraction of photogenerated excitons in TMDs into free charge carriers. Short THz pulses are therefore an efficient, non-invasive method of dynamically controlling the free carrier concentration in monolayer TMDs, which is useful for applications such as THz modulators. We further demonstrate that exciton ionization probabilities should be experimentally measurable by comparing free carrier absorption before and after the THz pulse. Detailed results are provided for different TMDs in various dielectric environments.

Calculation of the nonlinear response functions of intraexciton transitions in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides

In this paper, we study the third-order nonlinear optical response due to transitions between excitonic levels in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogeniedes. To accomplish this, we use methods not applied to the description of excitons in two-dimensional materials so far and combined with a variational approach to describe the $1s$ excitonic state. The aforementioned transitions allow to probe dark states which are not revealed in absorption experiments. We present general formulas capable of describing any third-order process. The specific case of two-photon absorption in WSe2 is studied. The case of the circular well is also studied as a benchmark of the theory.

Analytical quantitative semiclassical approach to the Lo Surdo–Stark effect and ionization in two-dimensional excitons

Using a semi-classical approach, we derive a fully analytical expression for the ionization rate of excitons in two-dimensional materials due to an external static electric field, which eliminates the need for complicated numerical calculations. Our formula shows quantitative agreement with more sophisticated numerical methods based on the exterior complex scaling approach, which solves a non-hermitian eigenvalue problem yielding complex energy eigenvalues, where the imaginary part describes the ionization rate. Results for excitons in hexagonal boron nitride and the $A-$exciton in transition metal dichalcogenides are given as a simple examples. The extension of the theory to include spin-orbit-split excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides is trivial.

Radially polarized light beams from spin-forbidden dark excitons and trions in monolayer WSe2

The rich optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs) render these materials promising candidates for the design of new optoelectronic devices. Despite the large number of excitonic complexes in TMD-MLs, the main focus has been placed on optically bright neutral excitons. Spin-forbidden dark excitonic complexes have been addressed for basic science purposes, but not for applications. We report on spin-forbidden dark excitonic complexes in ML WSe2 as an ideal system for the facile generation of radially polarized light beams. Furthermore, the spatially resolved polarization of photoluminescence beams can be exploited for basic research on excitons in two-dimensional materials.

Cavity Control of Excitons in Two-Dimensional Materials.

We propose a robust and efficient way of controlling the optical spectra of two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures by quantum cavity embedding. The cavity light-matter coupling leads to the formation of exciton–polaritons, a superposition of photons and excitons. Our first-principles study demonstrates a reordering and mixing of bright and dark excitons spectral features and in the case of a type II van-der-Waals heterostructure an inversion of intra- and interlayer excitonic resonances. We further show that the cavity light-matter coupling strongly depends on the dielectric environment and can be controlled by encapsulating the active two-dimensional (2D) crystal in another dielectric material. Our theoretical calculations are based on a newly developed nonperturbative many-body framework to solve the coupled electron–photon Schrödinger equation in a quantum-electrodynamical extension of the Bethe-Salpeter approach. This approach enables the ab initio simulations of exciton–polariton states and their dispersion from weak to strong cavity light-matter coupling regimes. Our method is then extended to treat van der Waals heterostructures and encapsulated 2D materials using a simplified Mott-Wannier description of the excitons that can be applied to very large systems beyond reach for fully ab initio approaches.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides in strong magnetic fields: Validating the Wannier model using a microscopic calculation

Using an equation of motion (EOM) approach, we calculate excitonic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) perturbed by an external magnetic field. We compare our findings to the widely used Wannier model for excitons in two-dimensional materials and to recent experimental results. We find good agreement between the calculated excitonic transition energies and the experimental results. In addition, we find that the exciton energies calculated using the EOM approach are slightly lower than the ones calculated using the Wannier model. Finally, we also show that the effect of the dielectric environment on the magnetoexciton transition energy is minimal due to counteracting changes in the exciton energy and the exchange self-energy correction.

Electrostatics of electron-hole interactions in van der Waals heterostructures

The role of dielectric screening of electron-hole interaction in van der Waals heterostructures is theoretically investigated. A comparison between models available in the literature for describing these interactions is made and the limitations of these approaches are discussed. A simple numerical solution of Poisson's equation for a stack of dielectric slabs based on a transfer matrix method is developed, enabling the calculation of the electron-hole interaction potential at very low computational cost and with reasonable accuracy. Using different potential models, direct and indirect exciton binding energies in these systems are calculated within Wannier-Mott theory, and a comparison of theoretical results with recent experiments on excitons in two-dimensional materials is discussed.

Noninvasive control of excitons in two-dimensional materials

We investigate how external screening shapes excitons in two-dimensional (2d) semiconductors embedded in laterally structured dielectric environments. An atomic scale view of these elementary excitations is developed using models which apply to a variety of materials including transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We find that structured dielectrics imprint a peculiar potential energy landscape on excitons in these systems: While the ground-state exciton is least influenced, higher excitations are attracted towards regions with high dielectric constant of the environment. This landscape is "inverted" in the sense that low energy excitons are less strongly affected than their higher energy counterparts. Corresponding energy variations emerge on length scales of the order of a few unit cells. This opens the prospect of trapping and guiding of higher excitons by means of tailor-made dielectric substrates on ultimately small spatial scales.

Observation of Exciton Redshift-Blueshift Crossover in Monolayer WS2.

We report a rare atom-like interaction between excitons in monolayer WS2, measured using ultrafast absorption spectroscopy. At increasing excitation density, the exciton resonance energy exhibits a pronounced redshift followed by an anomalous blueshift. Using both material-realistic computation and phenomenological modeling, we attribute this observation to plasma effects and an attraction-repulsion crossover of the exciton-exciton interaction that mimics the Lennard-Jones potential between atoms. Our experiment demonstrates a strong analogy between excitons and atoms with respect to interparticle interaction, which holds promise to pursue the predicted liquid and crystalline phases of excitons in two-dimensional materials.

Coulomb engineering of the bandgap and excitons in two-dimensional materials

The ability to control the size of the electronic bandgap is an integral part of solid-state technology. Atomically thin two-dimensional crystals offer a new approach for tuning the energies of the electronic states based on the unusual strength of the Coulomb interaction in these materials and its environmental sensitivity. Here, we show that by engineering the surrounding dielectric environment, one can tune the electronic bandgap and the exciton binding energy in monolayers of WS2 and WSe2 by hundreds of meV. We exploit this behaviour to present an in-plane dielectric heterostructure with a spatially dependent bandgap, as an initial step towards the creation of diverse lateral junctions with nanoscale resolution.

Simple Screened Hydrogen Model of Excitons in Two-Dimensional Materials.

We present a generalized hydrogen model for the binding energies (E_{B}) and radii of excitons in two-dimensional (2D) materials that sheds light on the fundamental differences between excitons in two and three dimensions. In contrast to the well-known hydrogen model of three-dimensional (3D) excitons, the description of 2D excitons is complicated by the fact that the screening cannot be assumed to be local. We show that one can consistently define an effective 2D dielectric constant by averaging the screening over the extend of the exciton. For an ideal 2D semiconductor this leads to a simple expression for E_{B} that only depends on the excitonic mass and the 2D polarizability α. The model is shown to produce accurate results for 51 transition metal dichalcogenides. Remarkably, over a wide range of polarizabilities the binding energy becomes independent of the mass and we obtain E_{B}^{2D}≈3/(4πα), which explains the recently observed linear scaling of exciton binding energies with band gap. It is also shown that the model accurately reproduces the nonhydrogenic Rydberg series in WS_{2} and can account for screening from the environment.
