Dynamics simulation of excited-state proton transfer reactions of 8-hydroxyquinoline with water clusters: A TD-DFT study

Detailed pictures of the excited-state proton transfer reactions of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) and its small clusters of water have been systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods at B3LYP/TZVP and TD-B3LYP/TZVP level of theory, respectively. Intramolecular hydrogen bond (intraHB) and intermolecular hydrogen bond (interHB) interactions between 8HQ and water cluster become stronger in the first excited state (S1), confirmed by hydrogen bond distances and topological analysis. In addition, TD-B3LYP dynamics simulations have been elucidated and revealed that excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIntraPT) and multiply excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (ESInterPT) reactions of these complexes can take place in the ultrafast time scale of femtoseconds. Increasing the number of water molecules may give rise to a barrier energy that is anti-correlated to the probability of tautomer species from phototautomerization, especially in 8HQ-W1 and 8HQ-W1+1. Moreover, water molecules initiate multiple proton transfer occurring through two- and three-step ESInterPT namely excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT) and excited-state triple proton transfer (ESTPT) in which the interHBs are formed by rearrangement of water molecules of 8HQ-W2. This circumstance takes a longer time (up to 470 fs) compared to that of ESIntraPT. Thus, the simulated results from this study could provide insight into ESIntraPT and ESInterPT of phototautomerization and the significant photodynamics which could not be found from the experimental aspects of 8HQ and its solvent clusters.

Triple proton transfer after water rearrangement in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2

We have studied the electronic equilibrium structures and the tautomerization process in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2-3 cluster in the gas phase and in solvent water by DFT and TDDFT methods. In (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2 cluster, we found three novel stable clusters (NCHB-I1, NCHB-I2 and NCHB-O) with water line hydrogen boned in the molecular plane and under the molecular plane, respectively. Especially, the water line in NCHB-O is connected with the proton donor and proton acceptor, which provides a route for proton transfer. Atoms in molecules (AIM) and non-covalent interactions (NCI) analysis were used to analyze the interaction strength and interaction type in them. We also found that NCHB-I1 and NCHB-I2 could isomerize to NCHB-O via water rearrangement, from where triple proton transfer takes place. Further analysis shows that excited-state triple proton transfer follows an asynchronous concerted mechanism but with considerably high energy barrier in both gas phase and in water which makes it difficult to occur. In (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)3, the ADMP simulations show that water rearrangement could occur from the bridged normal cluster to the 2 + 1 type cluster (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2+1 with two water molecules in the first shell and a single water in the second shell. The excited-state IRC calculation shows that energy barrier for the excited-state triple proton transfer in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2+1 is slightly lowered after a single water in the second shell compared with the one in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2. On the other hand, the energy barrier for the excited-state quadruple proton transfer in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)3 is considerably lower than the ones for triple proton transfer in (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2 and (2,6-aza)Ind·(H2O)2+1, suggesting that the quadruple proton transfer mechanism is more preferred instead of triple proton transfer. This study provides significant insight into the proton transfer behavior in similar cluster systems, also shows the significance of water rearrangement in the proton transfer processes.

Theoretical study on the detailed excited state triple proton transfer mechanism of cyclic 6-Azaindole trimer

The proton transfer mechanism of 6AI trimer in cyclohexane has been theoretical study by time-dependent density functional theoretical methods. After three 6AI monomers are connected to form trimer by hydrogen bonds, the calculated absorption spectra confirm that the experimental absorption peaks of 6AI monomer (about 280 nm) and 6AI trimer (310 nm) are attributed to the 6AI trimer and TPT tautomer respectively. Through the potential energy curves and the potential energy surface, it can be concluded that the 6AI trimer reaches the TPT tautomer in the S1 state through the concerted mechanism rather than the stepwise mechanism.

The Cyclic Hydrogen‐Bonded 6‐Azaindole Trimer and its Prominent Excited‐State Triple‐Proton‐Transfer Reaction

AbstractThe compound 6‐azaindole undergoes self‐assembly by formation of N(1)−H⋅⋅⋅N(6) hydrogen bonds (H bonds), forming a cyclic, triply H‐bonded trimer. The formation phenomenon is visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy. Remarkably, the H‐bonded trimer undergoes excited‐state triple proton transfer (ESTPT), resulting in a proton‐transfer tautomer emission maximized at 435 nm (325 nm of the normal emission) in cyclohexane. Computational approaches affirm the thermodynamically favorable H‐bonded trimer formation and the associated ESTPT reaction. Thus, nearly half a century after Michael Kasha discovered the double H‐bonded dimer of 7‐azaindole and its associated excited‐state double‐proton‐transfer reaction, the triply H‐bonded trimer formation of 6‐azaindole and its ESTPT reaction are demonstrated.

The Excited-State Triple Proton Transfer Reaction of 2,6-Diazaindoles and 2,6-Diazatryptophan in Aqueous Solution.

3-Me-2,6-diazaindole ((2,6-aza)Ind) was strategically designed and synthesized to probe water molecule catalyzed excited-state proton transfer in aqueous solution. Upon electronic excitation (λmax ∼ 300 nm), (2,6-aza)Ind undergoes N(1)-H to N(6) long-distance proton transfer in neutral H2O, resulting in normal (340 nm) and proton-transfer tautomer (480 nm) emissions with an overall quantum yield of 0.25. The rate of the water-catalyzed proton transfer shows a prominent H/D kinetic isotope effect, which is determined to be 8.3 × 108 s-1 and 4.7 × 108 s-1 in H2O and D2O, respectively. Proton inventory experiments indicate the involvement of two water molecules and three protons, which undergo a relay type of excited-state triple proton transfer (ESTPT) in a concerted, asynchronous manner. The results demonstrate for the first time the fundamental of triple proton transfer in pure water for azaindoles as well as pave a new avenue for 2,6-diazatryptophan, an analogue of tryptophan exhibiting a similar ESTPT property with (2,6-aza)Ind, to probe biowaters in proteins.

Excited-state multiple proton transfer depending on the acidity and basicity of mediating alcohols in 7-azaindole-(ROH)2 (R = H, CH3) complexes: a theoretical study.

Long-range proton transfer plays an important role in many chemical and biological phenomena. It has recently been reported that the rate of excited-state multiple proton transfer depends on the acidity and basicity of mediating alcohols in the H-bonded wire. The excited-state triple proton transfer in 7-azaindole complexes through cyclic H-bonded wires was theoretically studied to investigate rates depending on the mediating alcohols. This study showed that the acidity and basicity of alcohols collectively functioned to assist proton transfers depending on the paths; the proton transfers of protolytic and solvolytic paths were assisted by the pull-behind effect and the push-ahead effect, respectively. Both proton-donating and accepting abilities of alcohols in the H-bonded wire can accumulate to help proton transfer, and the strong acidity and basicity of the alcohols with relatively small structural changes in the wire have larger impacts on reducing the activation energies than those of alcohols that trigger proton transfer.

Excited-state proton-transfer reactions of 7-azaindole with water, ammonia and mixed water–ammonia: microsolvated dynamics simulation

Dynamics simulations of excited-state multiple proton transfer (ESMPT) reactions in 7-azaindole (7AI) with ammonia, mixed water–ammonia, and water molecules were investigated by quantum dynamics simulations in the first-excited state using RI-ADC(2)/SVP-SV(P) in the gas phase. 7AI(WW), 7AI(WA), 7AI(AW) and 7AI(AA) clusters (W, water and A, ammonia) show very high probability of the excited-state triple proton transfer (ESTPT) occurrence in ranges from 20% for 7AI(WA) to 60% for 7AI(AW), respectively. Furthermore, 7AI(AW) clusters with ammonia placed near N–H of 7AI has the highest probability among other isomers. In 7AI with three molecules of bridged-planar of water, ammonia and mixed water–ammonia clusters, the excited-state quadruple proton transfer reactions occur ineffectively and rearrangement of hydrogen-bonded network on solvents also takes place prior to either ESTPT or excited-state double proton transfer. The role played by mixed-solvent is revealed with replacing H2O with NH3 in which the ESMPT is found to be more efficient corresponding to lower barrier in the excited state. The preferential number of solvent surrounding 7AI that facilitates the proton transfer process is two for methanol and water but this preferential number for ammonia is one.Highlights: (i) replacing H2O with NH3 assists ESPT corresponding to lower barrier in the excited state; (ii) the ESMPT time of 7AI with mixed water–ammonia is in the sub-picosecond timescale; (iii) the PT tends to be concerted process with at least one ammonia, but synchronous without ammonia.

Dynamics simulations of excited-state triple proton transfer in 7-azaindole complexes with water, water–methanol and methanol

Excited-state triple proton transfer (ESTPT) reactions in 7-azaindole (7AI) complexed with two water, with one water and one methanol, and with two methanol molecules were investigated by dynamics simulations in the first excited state computed with the second order algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC (2)) method. The results show that photoexcitation may trigger ultrafast an asynchronous concerted proton transfer via two solvent molecules along an intermolecular hydrogen-bonded network. The probability of occurrence of ESTPT ranges from 32% for 7AI(H2O–MeOH) to 64% for 7AI(MeOH)2. The average time for completing the ESTPT varies between 58 and 85 fs depending on the complex. The proton transfer (rather than hydrogen transfer) nature of the reaction was suggested by the nonexistence of crossings between the ππ* and πσ* states.

Excited-State Intermolecular Proton Transfer Reactions of 7-Azaindole(MeOH)n (n = 1–3) Clusters in the Gas phase: On-the-Fly Dynamics Simulation

Ultrafast excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (PT) reactions in 7-azaindole(methanol)(n) (n = 1-3) [7AI(MeOH)(n=1-3)] complexes were performed using dynamics simulations. These complexes were first optimized at the RI-ADC(2)/SVP-SV(P) level in the gas phase. The ground-state structures with the lowest energy were also investigated and presented. On-the-fly dynamics simulations for the first-excited state were employed to investigate reaction mechanisms and time evolution of PT processes. The PT characteristics of the reactions were confirmed by the nonexistence of crossings between S(ππ*) and S(πσ*) states. Excited-state dynamics results for all complexes exhibit excited-state multiple-proton transfer (ESmultiPT) reactions via methanol molecules along an intermolecular hydrogen-bonded network. In particular, the two methanol molecules of a 7AI(MeOH)(2) cluster assist the excited-state triple-proton transfer (ESTPT) reaction effectively with highest probability of PT.

Theoretical Studies for Excited-State Tautomerization in the 7-Azaindole–(CH3OH)n (n = 1 and 2) Complexes in the Gas Phase

The excited-state tautomerization of 7-azaindole (7AI) complexes bonded with either one or two methanol molecule(s) was studied by systematic quantum mechanical calculations in the gas phases. Electronic structures and energies for the reactant, transition state (TS), and product were computed at the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) levels with the second-order multireference perturbation theory (MRPT2) to consider the dynamic electron correlation. The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was also used for comparison. The excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT) in 7AI-CH(3)OH occurs in a concerted but asynchronous mechanism. Similarly, such paths are also found in the two transition states during the excited-state triple proton transfer (ESTPT) of the 7AI-(CH(3)OH)(2) complex. In the first TS, the pyrrole ring proton first migrated to methanol, while in the second the methanol proton moved first to the pyridine ring. The CASSCF level with the MRPT2 correction showed that the former path was much preferable to the latter, and the ESDPT is much slower than the ESTPT. Additionally, the vibrational-mode enhanced tautomerization in the 7AI-(CH(3)OH)(2) complex was also studied. We found that the excitation of the low-frequency mode shortens the reaction path to increase the tautomerization rate. Overall, most TDDFT methods used in this study predicted different TS structures and barriers from the CASSCF methods with MRPT2 corrections.

Photon induced isomerization in the first excited state of the 7-azaindole–(H2O)3 cluster

A picosecond pump and probe experiment has been applied to study the excited state dynamics of 7-azaindole-water 1 ∶ 2 and 1 ∶ 3 clusters [7AI(H(2)O)(2,3)] in the gas phase. The vibrational-mode selective Excited-State-Triple-Proton Transfer (ESTPT) in 7AI(H(2)O)(2) proposed from the frequency-resolved study has been confirmed by picosecond decays. The decay times for the vibronic states involving the ESTPT promoting mode σ(1) (850-1000 ps) are much shorter than those for the other vibronic states (2100-4600 ps). In the (1 + 1) REMPI spectrum of 7AI(H(2)O)(3) measured by nanosecond laser pulses, the vibronic bands with an energy higher than 200 cm(-1) above the origin of the S(1) state become very weak. In contrast, the vibronic bands in the same region emerge in the (1 + 1') REMPI spectrum of 7AI(H(2)O)(3) with picosecond pulses. The decay times drastically decrease when increasing the vibrational energy above 200 cm(-1). Ab initio calculations show that a second stable "cyclic-nonplanar isomer" exists in addition to a "bridged-planar isomer", and that an isomerization from a bridged-planar isomer to a cyclic-nonplanar isomer is most probably responsible for the short lifetimes of the vibronic states of 7AI(H(2)O)(3).

Excited-State Triple-Proton Transfer in 7-Azaindole(H2O)2 and Reaction Path Studied by Electronic Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase and Quantum Chemical Calculations

We have investigated the excited-state multiple-proton/hydrogen atom transfer reactions in the 7-azaindole water clusters, [7AI](H(2)O)(n) (n = 2,3), in the gas phase by combining electronic spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The fluorescence excitation (FE) spectrum of 7AI(H(2)O)(2) has been observed by monitoring visible emission. In contrast, no vibronic bands are detected in the FE spectrum of 7AI(H(2)O)(3) when the visible emission is monitored. The dispersed fluorescence spectra of 7AI(H(2)O)(n) (n = 2,3) have been measured. The excitation of +180 cm(-1) band from the electronic origin of 7AI(H(2)O)(2) enhances the visible emission as compared with the 0-0 excitation. The +180 cm(-1) band is assgined to an intermolecular mode (σ(1)) of the cyclic hydrogen-bonded ring structure. The calculated S(1)-S(0) absorption spectrum for the cyclic hydrogen-bonded structure is in agreement with the FE spectrum around the 0-0 region. The excitation of σ(1) significantly promotes the reaction and generates the tautomeric form of 7AI(H(2)O)(2). These experimental results on 7AI(H(2)O)(n) (n = 2,3) are very similar to those on 7AI(CH(3)OH)(n) (n = 2,3) and 7AI(C(2)H(5)OH)(n) (n = 2,3). We conclude that the excited-state triple proton/hydrogen atom transfer (ESTPT/HT) occurs in 7AI(H(2)O)(2). Cuts of the potential energy surfaces along the proton/hydrogen atom transfer coordinates of 7AI(H(2)O)(n) (n = 2,3) and 7AI(CH(3)OH)(n) (n = 2,3) are comparatively calculated by quantum chemistry calculations (RI-CC2/cc-pVDZ and TD-DFT(B3LYP)/cc-pVDZ) to explore the mechanism of the ESTPT/HT reaction. The calculated results suggest that concerted proton transfers occur in 7AI(H(2)O)(2) as well as in 7AI(CH(3)OH)(2), whereas the potential barrier for the excited-state quadruple proton transfer in 7AI(H(2)O)(3) and 7AI(CH(3)OH)(3) is higher than those for ESTPT. The theoretical results are consistent with the observation of ESTPT/HT in 7AI(H(2)O)(2).

Room-temperature triple proton transfer of 7-hydroxyquinoline and stabilization of its ground-state keto tautomer in a polymeric matrix

7-hydroxyquinoline (7HQ) dissolved in a solid poly (2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (PHEMA) matrix shows dual fluorescence at room temperature: a blue one (376 nm) from enol forms and a green one (515 nm) from the keto tautomer. This isomer can be populated by an excited-state triple proton transfer in well-bridged complexes of 7HQPHEMA or by vertical excitation of the long-term stable keto tautomer in the ground state.
