Fermi Surface Nesting with Heavy Quasiparticles in the Locally Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CeRh2As2

Abstract The locally noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CeRh2As2 has attracted considerable interests due to its rich superconducting phases, accompanied by possible quadrupole density wave and pronounced antiferromagnetic excitations. To understand the underlying physics, here we report measurements from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission. Our results reveal fine splittings of the conduction bands related to the locally noncentrosymmetric structure, as well as a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface (FS) with strong 4f contributions. The FS shows signs of nesting with an in-plane vector q 1 = (π/a, π/a), which is facilitated by the heavy bands near X ¯ arising from the characteristic conduction-f hybridization. The FS nesting provides a natural explanation for the observed antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at (π/a, π/a), which might be the driving force for its unconventional superconductivity. Our experimental results can be reasonably explained by density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations, which can capture the strong correlation effects. Our study not only provides spectroscopic signature of the key factors underlying the field-induced superconducting transition, but also uncovers the critical role of FS nesting and lattice Kondo effect in the underlying magnetic fluctuations.

Selection rules for ultrafast laser excitation and detection of spin correlation dynamics in a cubic antiferromagnet

Exchange interactions determine the correlations between microscopic spins in magnetic materials. Probing the dynamics of these spin correlations on ultrashort length and time scales is, however, rather challenging, since it requires simultaneously high spatial and high temporal resolution. Recent experimental demonstrations of laser-driven two-magnon modes---zone-edge excitations in antiferromagnets governed by exchange coupling---posed questions about the microscopic nature of the observed spin dynamics, the mechanism underlying its excitation, and their macroscopic manifestation enabling detection. Here, on the basis of a simple microscopic model, we derive the selection rules for cubic systems that describe the polarization of pump and probe pulses required to excite and detect dynamics of nearest-neighbor spin correlations and can be employed to isolate such dynamics from other magnetic excitations and magneto-optical effects. We show that laser-driven spin correlations contribute to optical anisotropy of the antiferromagnet even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. In addition, we highlight the role of subleading anisotropy in the spin system and demonstrate that the dynamics of the antiferromagnetic order parameter occurs only in next-to-leading order, determined by the smallness of the magnetic anisotropy as compared to the isotropic exchange interactions in the system. We expect that our results will stimulate and support further studies of magnetic correlations on the shortest length and time scales.

Antiferromagnetic insulators with tunable magnon-polaron Chern numbers induced by in-plane optical phonons

We theoretically study magnon-phonon hybrid excitations (magnon-polarons) in two-dimensional antiferromagnets on a honeycomb lattice. With an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) allowed from mirror symmetry breaking from phonons, we find non-trivial Berry curvature around the anti-crossing rings among magnon and both optical and acoustic phonon bands, which gives rise to finite Chern numbers. We show that the Chern numbers of the magnon-polaron bands can be manipulated by changing the magnetic field direction or strength. We evaluate the thermal Hall conductivity reflecting the non-trivial Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons and propose a valley Hall effect resulting from spin-induced chiral phonons as a possible experimental signature. Our study complements prior work on magnon-phonon hybridized systems without optical phonons and suggests possible applications in spin caloritronics with topological magnons and chiral phonons.

Development of short and long-range magnetic order in the double perovskite based frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba_{2}MnTeO_{6}

Frustrated magnets based on oxide double perovskites offer a viable ground wherein competing magnetic interactions, macroscopic ground state degeneracy and complex interplay between emergent degrees of freedom can lead to correlated quantum phenomena with exotic excitations highly relevant for potential technological applications. By local-probe muon spin relaxation (muSR) and complementary thermodynamic measurements accompanied by first-principles calculations, we here demonstrate novel electronic structure and magnetic phases of Ba_{2}MnTeO_{6}, where Mn^{2+} ions with S = 5/2 spins constitute a perfect triangular lattice. Magnetization results evidence the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn^{2+} spins and a phase transition at T_{N} = 20 K. Below T_{N}, the specific heat data show antiferromagnetic magnon excitations with a gap of 1.4 K, which is due to magnetic anisotropy. muSR reveals the presence of static internal fields in the ordered state and short-range spin correlations high above T_{N}. It further unveils critical slowing-down of spin dynamics at T_{N} and the persistence of spin dynamics even in the magnetically ordered state. Theoretical studies infer that Heisenberg interactions govern the inter- and intra-layer spin-frustration in this compound. Our results establish that the combined effect of a weak third-nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic inter-layer interaction (owing to double-exchange) and intra-layer interactions stabilizes a three-dimensional magnetic ordering in this frustrated magnet.

Parity-controlled spin-wave excitations in synthetic antiferromagnets

We report in this study the current-induced-torque excitation of acoustic and optical modes in Ta/NiFe/Ru/NiFe/Ta synthetic antiferromagnet stacks grown on SiO2/Si substrates. The two Ta layers serve as spin torque sources with the opposite polarizations in both spin currents and Oersted fields acting on their adjacent NiFe layers. This can create the odd symmetry of spatial spin torque distribution across the growth direction, allowing us to observe different spin-wave excitation efficiency from synthetic antiferromagnets excited by homogeneous torques. We analyze the torque symmetry by the in-plane angular dependence of symmetric and anti-symmetric line shape amplitudes for their resonance and confirm the parallel (perpendicular) pumping nature for the acoustic (optical) modes in our devices, which is in stark contrast to the modes excited by spatially homogeneous torques. We also present our macrospin model for this particular spin-torque excitation geometry, which excellently supports our experimental observation. Our results offer capability of controlling spin-wave excitations by local spin-torque sources, and we can explore further spin-wave control schemes based on this concept.

Magnetoresistance Scaling and the Origin of H -Linear Resistivity in BaFe2(As1−xPx)2

The scaling of $H$-linear magnetoresistance in field and temperature was measured in under-doped (x = 0.19) and optimally-doped (x=0.31)~BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. We analyze the data based on an orbital model in the presence of strongly anisotropic quasiparticle spectra and scattering time due to antiferromagnetism. The magnetoresistance is dominated by the properties of small regions of the Fermi surface called `hot spots' where antiferromagnetic excitations induce a large quasiparticle scattering rate. Approximate temperature-magnetic field scaling relations are derived and shown to be consistent with the experimental data. We argue that these results link the origin of linear-in-temperature resistivity to hot spots arising from an antiferromagnetic critical point, and magnetoresistance measurements provide a route to quantify this link.

Spin current from sub-terahertz-generated antiferromagnetic magnons.

Spin dynamics in antiferromagnets has much shorter timescales than in ferromagnets, offering attractive properties for potential applications in ultrafast devices1-3. However, spin-current generation via antiferromagnetic resonance and simultaneous electrical detection by the inverse spin Hall effect in heavy metals have not yet been explicitly demonstrated4-6. Here we report sub-terahertz spin pumping in heterostructures of a uniaxial antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 crystal and a heavy metal (Pt or Ta in its β phase). At 0.240 terahertz, the antiferromagnetic resonance in Cr2O3 occurs at about 2.7 tesla, which excites only right-handed magnons. In the spin-canting state, another resonance occurs at 10.5 tesla from the precession of induced magnetic moments. Both resonances generate pure spin currents in the heterostructures, which are detected by the heavy metal as peaks or dips in the open-circuit voltage. The pure-spin-current nature of the electrically detected signals is unambiguously confirmed by the reversal of the voltage polarity observed under two conditions: when switching the detector metal from Pt to Ta, reversing the sign of the spin Hall angle7-9, and when flipping the magnetic-field direction, reversing the magnon chirality4,5. The temperature dependence of the electrical signals at both resonances suggests that the spin current contains both coherent and incoherent magnon contributions, which is further confirmed by measurements of the spin Seebeck effect and is well described by a phenomenological theory. These findings reveal the unique characteristics of magnon excitations in antiferromagnets and their distinctive roles in spin-charge conversion in the high-frequency regime.

Toroidal dipolar bound state in the continuum and antiferromagnetic in asymmetric metasurface

The toroidal dipole (TD) with weak coupling to the electromagnetic fields promises tremendous capability in sensing, light absorption and optical nonlinearities. Here, we analyze the near-field coupling effects of an asymmetric all-dielectric metasurface with an array of high-index Mie-resonant dielectric tetramer cluster. Two distinct optical toroidal dipolar bound states in the continuum are identified from the asymmetric metasurface. One occurs at the internal gap of the tetramer cluster array (intra-cluster toroidal modes), and the other arises from two neighboring clusters (inter-cluster toroidal modes). Via control of the asymmetry of the cluster, the TD could transform from bound states in the continuum into leaky resonances with high-Q factors. The optical antiferromagnetic response could also be identified from the tetramer cluster arrays. The toroidal and antiferromagnetic effects come from the trapped modes with symmetry breaking. These robust responses of the asymmetric metasurface remain stable as the asymmetry degree increases and the polarization of the incident light changes. The proposed metasurface with efficient light–matter interaction serves as a platform for controlling and exploiting optical toroidal and antiferromagnetic excitations.

Thermal Hall effect in noncollinear coplanar insulating antiferromagnets

We establish theoretically a thermal Hall effect of collective magnetic excitations in noncollinear but coplanar antiferromagnets. In agreement with superordinate symmetry arguments for linear transport tensors, our findings demonstrate that neither a ferromagnetic moment, nor a magnetic field, nor a scalar spin chirality are indispensable for a magnon thermal Hall effect. Similar to the electronic anomalous Hall effect, the two necessary requirements are broken effective time-reversal symmetry and a magnetic point group compatible with ferromagnetism. As an example, we construct a minimal model for an antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice with the coplanar negative vector chiral order. In the presence of in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the coplanar order stays intact but both magnon band gaps and a nonzero Berry curvature develop. This coplanar magnet realizes an antiferromagnetic magnon Chern insulator with a nonzero thermal Hall effect. We propose cadmium kapellasite ${\mathrm{CdCu}}_{3}{(\mathrm{OH})}_{6}{({\mathrm{NO}}_{3})}_{2}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ as an approximate material realization.

Spin-transfer antiferromagnetic resonance

Currents can induce spin excitations in antiferromagnets, even when they are insulating. We investigate how spin transfer can cause antiferromagnetic resonance in bilayers and trilayers that consist of one antiferromagnetic insulator and one or two metals. An ac voltage applied to the metal generates a spin Hall current that drives the magnetic moments in the antiferromagnet. We consider excitation of the macrospin mode and of transverse standing-spin-wave modes. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the antiferromagnetic insulator and the spin-diffusion equation in the normal metal, we derive analytical expressions for the spin-Hall-magnetoresistance and spin-pumping inverse-spin-Hall dc voltages. In bilayers, the two contributions compensate each other and cannot easily be distinguished. We present numerical results for a MnF$_2|$Pt bilayer. Trilayers facilitate separation of the spin-Hall-magnetoresistance and spin-pumping voltages, thereby revealing more information about the spin excitations. We also compute the decay of the pumped spin current through the antiferromagnetic layer as a function of frequency and the thickness of the antiferromagnetic layer.

Dirac and Nodal Line Magnons in Three-Dimensional Antiferromagnets.

We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in three-dimensional antiferromagnets, where the ground state configuration is invariant under time reversal followed by space inversion (PT symmetry). We prove that Dirac points and nodal lines, the former being the limiting case of the latter, are the generic forms of symmetry-protected band crossings between magnon branches. As a concrete example, we study a Heisenberg spin model for a "spin-web" compound, Cu_{3}TeO_{6}, and show the presence of the magnon Dirac points assuming a collinear magnetic structure. Upon turning on symmetry-allowed Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, which introduce a small noncollinearity in the ground state configuration, we find that the Dirac points expand into nodal lines with nontrivial Z_{2}-topological charge, a new type of nodal line not predicted in any materials so far.

High-energy magnetic excitations in lightly oxygen-doped lanthanum nickel oxides

We investigated magnetic excitations in lightly oxygen doped La2NiO4+δ (δ = 0.02 and 0.11) by inelastic neutron scattering over a wide energy range. It is known that two types of two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AF) excitations coexist in these systems, i.e., well-defined excitations with effective exchange interactions suppressed by hole doping in the lower energy region (impurity mode) and higher energy excitations with a steep dispersion (host mode). However, details of these excitations, especially the host mode, has not been well studied so far due to the lack of information in the higher energy region. Our results reveal that host modes can be characterized by a simple 2D AF spin-wave model with the same exchange energy as that of the stoichiometric system in the δ = 0.02 phase. In the δ = 0.11 phase, although considerable broadening was observed, the upper band limit of the host modes was on the same level as that in the stoichiometric system, which implies that the magnitude of intrinsic exchange interaction is not affected by doping. The observed results can help understand the microscopic nature of doped holes in this system and other layered-transition metal oxides.

Spin dynamics of antiferromagnets in the presence of a homogeneous magnetization

We use general hydrodynamic equations to determine the long-wavelength spin excitations in isotropic antiferromagnets in the presence of a homogeneous magnetization. The latter may be induced, such as in antiferromagnets in an external magnetic field, or spontaneous, such as in ferrimagnetic or canted phases that are characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order. Depending on the physical situation, we find propagating spin waves that are gapped in some cases and gapless in others, diffusive modes, or relaxational modes. The excitation spectra turn out to be qualitatively different depending on whether or not the homogeneous magnetization is a conserved quantity. The results lay the foundation for a description of a variety of quantum phase transitions, including the transition from a ferromagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic one, and the spin-flop transitions that are observed in some antiferromagnets. They also are crucial for incorporating weak-localization and Altshuler-Aronov effects into the descriptions of quantum phases in both clean and disordered magnetic metals.

Magnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons below half doping in La2−xSrxNiO4 ( x = 0.45, 0.4 )

The low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO4, x = 0.4 and x = 0.45 samples were studied by neutron scattering. Two excitation modes are observed in both materials, one from the ordered magnetic moments, and a second mode consistent with pseudo-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons (q-1D). The dispersion of the q-1D excitation follows the same relation as in x = 1/3 composition, with even spectral weight in the two counter-propagating branches of the x = 0.4 sample, however in the $x = 0.45$ sample only one dispersion branch has any measurable spectral weight. The evolution of the q-1D excitations on doping to the checkerboard charge ordered phase is discussed.

Experimental characterization of a prototype secondary spectrometer for vertically scattering multiple energy analysis at cold-neutron triple axis spectrometers

A thorough experimental characterization of a multiplexing backend with multiple energy analysis on a cold-neutron triple axis spectrometer (cTAS) is presented. The prototype employs two angular segments (2θ-segments) each containing five vertically scattering analyzers (energy channels), which simultaneously probe an energy transfer range of 2meV at the corresponding two scattering angles. The feasibility and strength of such a vertically scattering multiple energy analysis setup is clearly demonstrated. It is shown, that the energy resolution near the elastic line is comparable to the energy resolution of a standard cTAS. The dispersion relation of the antiferromagnetic excitations in MnF2 has been mapped out by performing constant energy transfer maps. These results show that the tested setup is virtually spurion free. In addition, focusing effects due to (mis)matching of the instrumental resolution ellipsoid to the excitation branch are clearly evident.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic excitations as a signature of the pseudogap in the tetragonal high-Tc cuprate HgBa2CuO(4+δ).

Antiferromagnetic correlations have been argued to be the cause of the d-wave superconductivity and the pseudogap phenomena exhibited by the cuprates. Although the antiferromagnetic response in the pseudogap state has been reported for a number of compounds, there exists no information for structurally simple HgBa2CuO4+δ. Here we report neutron-scattering results for HgBa2CuO4+δ (superconducting transition temperature Tc≈71 K, pseudogap temperature T*≈305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of the cuprates: the X-shaped ‘hourglass' response and the resonance mode in the superconducting state. Instead, the response is Y-shaped, gapped and significantly enhanced below T*, and hence a prominent signature of the pseudogap state.

Dynamical current-induced ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic resonances

We demonstrate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic excitations can be triggered by the dynamical spin accumulations induced by the bulk and surface contributions of the spin Hall effect. Due to the spin-orbit interaction, a time-dependent spin density is generated by an oscillatory electric field applied parallel to the atomic planes of Fe/W(110) multilayers. For symmetric trilayers of Fe/W/Fe in which the Fe layers are ferromagnetically coupled, we demonstrate that only the collective out-of-phase precession mode is excited, while the uniform (in-phase) mode remains silent. When they are antiferromagnetically coupled, the oscillatory electric field sets the Fe magnetizations into elliptical precession motions with opposite angular velocities. The manipulation of different collective spin-wave dynamical modes through the engineering of the multilayers and their thicknesses may be used to develop ultrafast spintronics devices. Our work provides a general framework that probes the realistic responses of materials in the time or frequency domain.

Velocity of excitations in ordered, disordered, and critical antiferromagnets

We test three different approaches, based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, for computing the velocity $c$ of triplet excitations in antiferromagnets. We consider the standard $S=1/2$ one- and two-dimensional Heisenberg models, as well as a bilayer Heisenberg model at its critical point. Computing correlation functions in imaginary time and using their long-time behavior, we extract the lowest excitation energy versus momentum using improved fitting procedures and a generalized moment method. The velocity is then obtained from the dispersion relation. We also exploit winding numbers to define a cubic space-time geometry, where the velocity is obtained as the ratio of the spatial and temporal lengths of the system when all winding number fluctuations are equal. The two methods give consistent results for both ordered and critical systems, but the winding-number estimator is more precise. For the Heisenberg chain, we accurately reproduce the exactly known velocity. For the two-dimensional Heisenberg model, our results are consistent with other recent calculations, but with an improved statistical precision; $c=1.65847(4)$. We also use the hydrodynamic relation $c^2=\rho_s/\chi_\perp(q\to 0)$ between $c$, the spin stiffness $\rho_s$, and the transversal susceptibility $\chi_\perp$, using the smallest non-zero momentum $q=2\pi/L$. This method also is well controlled in two dimensions, but the cubic criterion for winding numbers delivers better numerical precision. In one dimension the hydrodynamic relation is affected by logarithmic corrections which make accurate extrapolations difficult. As an application of the winding-number method, for the quantum-critical bilayer model our high-precision determination of the velocity enables us to quantitatively test, at an unprecedented level, field-theoretic predictions for low-temperature scaling forms where $c$ enters.

Snapshots of the retarded interaction of charge carriers with ultrafast fluctuations in cuprates

One of the pivotal questions in the physics of high-temperature superconductors is whether the low-energy dynamics of the charge carriers is mediated by bosons with a characteristic timescale. This issue has remained elusive since electronic correlations are expected to dramatically speed up the electron-boson scattering processes, confining them to the very femtosecond timescale that is hard to access even with state-of-the-art ultrafast techniques. Here we simultaneously push the time resolution and the frequency range of transient reflectivity measurements up to an unprecedented level that enables us to directly observe the 16 fs build-up of the effective electron-boson interaction in hole-doped copper oxides. This extremely fast timescale is in agreement with numerical calculations based on the t-J model and the repulsive Hubbard model, in which the relaxation of the photo-excited charges is achieved via inelastic scattering with short-range antiferromagnetic excitations.

Quantum criticality in two dimensions and marginal Fermi liquid

Kinetic properties of a two-dimensional model of fermions interacting with antiferromagnetic spin excitations near the quantum critical point are considered. The temperature or doping are assumed to be sufficiently high, such that the pseudogap does not appear. In contrast to standard spin-fermion models, it is assumed that there are intrinsic inhomogeneities in the system suppressing space correlations of the antiferromagnetic excitations. It is argued that the inhomogeneities in the spin excitations in the ``strange metal'' phase can be a consequence of the existence of ``$\ensuremath{\pi}$-shifted'' domain walls in the doped antiferromagnetic phase. Averaging over the inhomogeneities and calculating physical quantities such as resistivity and some others one can explain unusual properties of cuprates unified under the name ``marginal Fermi liquid.'' The dependence of the slope of the linear temperature dependence of the resistivity on doping is compared with experimental data.
