Study on combination therapy for lung cancer through pemetrexed-loaded mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles.

Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and surgical resection is the optimal choice for the primary lung tumor. But for the secondary lung cancer, chemotherapy and combined radiotherapy still are the main strategies. To realize the combined treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in this work, a nanoplatform based on pemetrexed (PE)-loaded mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) nanoparticles were investigated. PE, a special therapeutic drug for NSCLC, was loaded into the MPDA nanoparticles via electrostatic attraction and was encapsulated with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The results showed that, when irradiating with 808 nm near-infrared light, the PE loaded MPDA (MPDA@PE@PVP) nanoparticles have excellent photothermal conversion properties, which would result in increase of ambient temperature and could accelerate the release of PE. In vitro cell experiments proved that MPDA@PE@PVP nanoparticles have excellent killing ability for NSCLC A549 cells by the functions of PE and photothermal ability of MPDA nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the intra-cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels of A549 cells in the MPDA@PE@PVP nanoparticle-treated group could be promoted significantly after irradiation, leading to the death of A549 cells. In vivo animal model results showed that MPDA@PE@PVP nanoparticles could gather at the tumor site by enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect and have significant inhibition ability for lung tumor by synergistic therapy of chemotherapy, photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy.

Anti-biofouling photothermal film for solar steam generation based on oxygen defects rich and haloperoxidase mimic active V6O13

As a promising sea water desalination technique, solar evaporation has attracted massive attention. But in solar steam generation system, the photothermal film often becomes invalid because of bio-fouling. Haloperoxidase is an ideal choice to reverse this situation, which can catalyze conversion from Br- to HBrO and prevent adhesion of microorganism directly. Herein, oxygen defect rich V6O13 with high photothermal conversion efficiency and haloperoxidase mimic activity is synthesized. As confirmed by Density Function Theory calculations, oxygen defect can strengthen adsorption of V6O13 towards H2O2 and Br-, which enhances haloperoxidase mimic activity greatly. Oxygen defect rich V6O13 also exhibits excellent photothermal conversion property. A photothermal film is fabricated from oxygen defect rich V6O13 and polyacrylonitrile with electrospinning technique. Under 1 ​kW ​m−2, its evaporation rate reaches 1.25 ​kg ​m−2 ​h−1 with efficiency of 85.3%. The concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ have satisfied the standard of drinking water. More importantly, haloperoxidase mimic activity endows the film perfect anti-biofouling ability and suitable for long time water evaporation in marine environment. It can be expected photothermal film with anti-biofouling ability will exhibits a promising prospect in seawater desalination and sewage treatment.

Corrosion resistant coating with passive protection and self-healing property based on Fe3O4-MBT nanoparticles

This work synthesized novel Fe3O4 nanoparticles loaded with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole corrosion inhibitors (Fe3O4-MBT NPs), which possessed not only photothermal conversion property but also corrosion inhibition ability. The loading percentage of MBT inhibitors in the Fe3O4-MBT NPs was 9.69 wt.%. The obtained Fe3O4-MBT NPs were incorporated into a shape memory epoxy coating to achieve passive protection and self-healing property. The passive protection property of intact Fe3O4-MBT/epoxy coating was assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement during immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The low-frequency impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz of the composite coating containing 3 wt.% Fe3O4-MBT NPs was approximately 5 times higher than that of the blank epoxy coating after 240 h of immersion, indicating the superior barrier property of the composite coating. As for the self-healing property, the scratch width on the coating surface could narrow from 80 µm to ∼5 µm after near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 30 s, which was ascribed to the excellent photothermal conversion property of Fe3O4 NPs. EIS results verified that both the scratch closure triggered by the photothermal conversion of Fe3O4 NP and the release of MBT inhibitors are beneficial for the suppression of corrosion activity within the coating scratch. The Fe3O4-MBT/epoxy coating with outstanding passive protection and self-healing property holds great potential to achieve long-term corrosion protection.

High lignin, light-driven shape memory polymers with excellent mechanical performance

With the gradual global standardization of carbon emission policies, the development of renewable resources to replace traditional fossil resources is assuming increasing importance. Lignin is the most abundant natural source of aromatic compounds and has the potential to replace petroleum-based aromatic hydrocarbons. In this work, the rigid benzene ring structure and excellent photothermal properties of lignin were exploited to produce light-driven lignin-based shape memory polymers (ELEPs) that contain high proportions of lignin and have good mechanical properties. Enzymatically hydrolyzed lignin (EL), epoxy soybean oil (ESO) and polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) were copolymerized and cured to form ELEPs, which have a disordered three-dimensional network. An increase in the proportion of EL from 40 to 60 wt% enhanced the mechanical properties, as reflected by an increase in tensile strength from 11.3 to 30.8 MPa and in the glass transition temperature (Tg) from 93 to 115.7 °C. Under simulated solar irradiation (2000 W m−2), ELEP50, which contains 50 wt% lignin and has a Tg of 105 °C, reached a surface temperature as high as 105 °C and achieved shape memory within 20 s. The shape fixation ratio (Rf) and shape recovery ratio (Rr) were stably >98 % and >97 %, respectively, over eight cycles in a bending-recovery experiment. The unique light-driven shape memory properties of ELEPs provide a method for high value utilization of EL, and the design strategy offers new ideas for producing novel intelligent materials.

Electrospun Silk Fibroin/Polylactic-co-glycolic Acid/Black Phosphorus Nanosheets Nanofibrous Membrane with Photothermal Therapy Potential for Cancer

Photothermal therapy is a promising treating method for cancers since it is safe and easily controllable. Black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets have drawn tremendous attention as a novel biodegradable thermotherapy material, owing to their excellent biocompatibility and photothermal properties. In this study, silk fibroin (SF) was used to exfoliate BP with long-term stability and good solution-processability. Then, the prepared BP@SF was introduced into fibrous membranes by electrospinning, together with SF and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA). The SF/PLGA/BP@SF membranes had relatively smooth and even fibers and the maximum stress was 2.92 MPa. Most importantly, the SF/PLGA/BP@SF membranes exhibited excellent photothermal properties, which could be controlled by the BP@SF content and near infrared (NIR) light power. The temperature of SF/PLGA/BP@SF composite membrane was increased by 15.26 °C under NIR (808 nm, 2.5 W/cm2) irradiation for 10 min. The photothermal property of SF/PLGA/BP@SF membranes significantly killed the HepG2 cancer cells in vitro, indicating its good potential for application in local treatment of cancer.

Porous activated carbons derived from bamboo pulp black liquor for effective adsorption removal of tetracycline hydrochloride and malachite green from water.

As a kind of wastewater produced by papermaking industry, bamboo pulp black liquor (BPBL) discharged into water causes serious environmental problems. In this work, BPBL was successfully converted into porous carbon after activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) through one-step carbonization, and adsorption properties of porous carbon derived from bamboo pulp black liquor (BLPC) for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and malachite green (MG) were studied. The adsorption capacities of BLPC for TCH and MG are 1047 and 1277 mg/g, respectively, due to its large specific surface area of 1859.08 m2/g. Kinetics and isotherm data are well fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate model and Langmuir model, respectively. Adsorption experiments and characterizations reveal that the adsorption mechanism involved in TCH and MG adsorption on BLPC mainly depends on the synergistic effect of pore filling, H-bonding, π-π interactions and weak electrostatic interactions. In addition, BLPC shows excellent photothermal properties, and the adsorption capacity of TCH and MG on BLPC can reach 584 and 847 mg/g under the irradiation of near infrared lamp for 50 min, respectively. The synthesized BLPC with high adsorption efficiency, good recovery ability, improved adsorption under near-infrared irradiation can be a promising and effective adsorbent for TCH or MG or other pollutes.

Shape-controlled silver nanoplates colored fabric with tunable colors, photothermal antibacterial and colorimetric detection of hydrogen sulfide

Anisotropic silver nanoplates are widely anticipated in multifunctional textiles, but their large-scale promotion is limited by the shortcomings of long reaction time, uncontrollable shape and low yield in the preparation process. In this study, a microwave-assisted strategy is provided to prepare shape-controllable silver nanoplates for coloration of non-woven fabric. Anisotropic Ag nanoplates are efficiently coated on the surface of chitosan-pretreated fabric by a simple solution impregnation method, which generates the fabric with tunable color and multiple functions. The Ag nanoplates loaded fabric exhibits excellent photothermal properties at 808 nm laser irradiation due to its unique plasmonic absorption features. Colored fabric shows a strong synergistic antibacterial effect, including silver ion release and hyperthermia caused by the photothermal effect under near-infrared (NIR) light. Additionally, colored fabrics can be used as colorimetric sensors for selective detection of H2S. The colorimetric values of visible color signal of fabric-based H2S gas sensor can be real-time precisely detected using a smartphone, enlightening its high potential as a wearable toxic gas alarm device for the simple and rapid detection of hazardous gases.

Preparation of composite scaffolds composed of gelatin and Au nanostar-deposited black phosphorus nanosheets for the photothermal ablation of cancer cells and adipogenic differentiation of stem cells.

Photothermal nanoparticles are important in photothermal therapy. Combining different nanoparticles can achieve a high photothermal capacity. In this study, composite nanoparticles composed of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) and gold nanostars (BP-AuNSs) were synthesized by using BPNSs as the reductant. AuNSs were deposited on the BPNSs. The BP-AuNSs were further hybridized with porous gelatin scaffolds to prepare gelatin-BP-AuNS composite scaffolds. The gelatin-BP-AuNS composite scaffolds promoted cell migration and distribution. The synergistic effects of the BPNSs and AuNSs endowed the gelatin-BP-AuNS composite scaffolds with excellent photothermal properties. The gelatin-BP-AuNS composite scaffolds eliminated cancer cells after near infrared laser exposure and supported the adipogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. Thus, this gelatin-BP-AuNS composite scaffold holds promise for breast cancer therapy.

Synthesis of urchin-like W18O49 and its application in photocatalysis and tumor photothermal therapy

• Urchin-like W 18 O 49 is synthesized by using a one-step solvothermal method. • Adsorption and photocatalytic performance and influence of pH on them have been studied. • Urchin-like structure can adsorb dye molecules very well due to its high porosity and specific surface area. • Urchin-like W 18 O 49 presents excellent photothermal properties and inhibitory effect on melanoma cells under laser irradiation. In this study, using diethylene glycol as a soft template and one-step solvothermal method, we synthesized sea urchin-like W 18 O 49 . The physicochemical test results showed that the obtained W 18 O 49 had excellent adsorption and photocatalytic activity. In addition, the obtained sea urchin-like W 18 O 49 exhibited strong near-infrared absorption performance and high photothermal conversion efficiency of 41.8% under the irradiation of 980 nm laser. After 480 s of 980 nm laser irradiation (2.0 W/cm 2 ), the temperature of its aqueous dispersion (1.0 mg/mL) could rise by 49.1 °C rapidly. The results of the cell culture in vitro and the animal experiments in vivo showed that W 18 O 49 had good biocompatibility and could effectively inhibit melanoma cells (B16F10) by using the photothermal effect, showing a good application prospect.

Tunable optical topological transition of Cherenkov radiation

Approaches to generate and manipulate Cherenkov radiation (CR) are challenging yet meaningful. Optical topological transition (OTT) in novel materials and metamaterials is also promising for modern photonics. We study the OTT of CR in graphene-based hyperbolic metamaterials (GHMs) for the first time. In GHMs, conventional and hyperbolic CR can be switched when crossing the topological transition frequency. This frequency can be altered by metamaterial components and external optical elements. For instance, external ultrafast optical pumps cause an ultrafast OTT from the elliptical to the hyperbolic state. Then, hyperbolic CR can be excited by low-energy electrons by leveraging the excellent photothermal properties of graphene. Hyperbolic CR vanishes when the GHM returns to its original state. Furthermore, graphene nonlocality occurs when the electron velocity is low enough, corresponding to a large wave vector. Concretely, when the electron velocity approaches the Fermi velocity of graphene, a nonlocality-induced OTT modifies the plasmonic properties of the GHM and brings a new lower velocity threshold of hyperbolic CR. Therefore, hyperbolic CR can only be induced in a limited velocity range. These findings pave the way for understanding CR properties in active plasmonic metamaterials and may be applied to complex photonic and polaritonic systems.

Targeted peptide-modified oxidized mesoporous carbon nanospheres for chemo-thermo combined therapy of ovarian cancer in vitro

Ovarian cancer remains one of serious hazards to human health due to many drawbacks of existing available treatment options. In this study, a multifunctional chemo-thermo combined therapy nanoplatform (OMCNPID) was successfully prepared, which is composed of I6P8 peptide as a targeting moiety to interleukin-6 receptors (IL-6Rs), oxidized mesoporous carbon nanospheres (OMCN) as a near infrared (NIR)-triggered drug carrier and doxorubicin (DOX) as a chemotherapeutic drug and fluorescent agent. The synthesized multifunctional nanoplatform displayed high storage capacity for drugs and excellent photothermal properties. Besides, DOX was rapidly released from OMCNPID at the condition of low pH and NIR laser irradiation due to the dissociation of DOX from graphitic cores of OMCN. In vitro experimental results verified that OMCNPID could be markedly taken up by SKOV-3 monolayer cells and tumor spheroids, and revealed a remarkable synergistic chemo-photothermal effect against ovarian cancer. All the results demonstrated that OMCNPID is a pH/NIR dual-stimulus responsive nanoplatform and can achieve efficient chemo-thermo combined therapy.

Microbubble generation and large-scale assembly of colloidal particles by graphene oxide microstructures

The study of generation, growth and decay of microbubbles is interesting owing to its potential applications in imaging, trapping of colloidal particles and mass fluid flow. While there have been several reports on the generation of microbubbles using plasmonic nanostructure based substrates, they often are expensive and cumbersome to fabricate. In this study, we demonstrate a simple scheme for the generation of microbubbles using graphene oxide (GO) microstructures. Due to the excellent photothermal properties of this graphene-based 2D material, it is possible to generate and sustain microbubbles by laser illumination at low intensities of the order of few of μW μm−2. The size of the microbubbles can be tuned by changing the incident laser power. Furthermore, the generated microbubble acts as a concave wide-angle lens with variable focal length. We further utilised the fluid flow around the microbubble to generate large-scale assembly of silica beads and quantum dots using thermophoretic forces. This optically-assisted thermophoretic aggregation is rapid and reversible. Owing to the simple and cost-effective synthesis method of GO, this scheme is an excellent alternative to plasmonic heating based-methods for the generation of microbubbles .

Nb2CTx MXene Integrated Tapered Microfiber Based on Light-Controlled Light for Ultra-Sensitive and Wide-Range Hemoglobin Detection

Hemoglobin is an indicator of various diseases in humans, and shows excellent photothermal properties. Here, a biosensor combining the molecular photothermal effect with the Nb <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> CT <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">x</sub> MXene integrated microfiber is proposed for the specific detection of human hemoglobin concentration by light-controlled light technique. The Nb <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> CT <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">x</sub> MXene with a large specific surface and hydrophilicity is deposited on the surface of the microfiber through an optical deposition method, which makes hemoglobin molecules adsorbed on the surface of the microfiber and enhance the interaction between light and matter. Under the irradiation of excitation light, the photothermal effect of the molecules amplifies the optical signal to be measured, which further improves the sensitivity and selectivity of detection. The experimental results show that the sensitivity reaches 7.581 nm/(g•dL <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−1</sup> ) with a limit of detection of 0.0026 g/dL, which is far below the blood hemoglobin level of humans (0–13 g/dL). It has been also confirmed that the sensor exhibits good selectivity. This method has the advantages of being resistant to electromagnetic interference, low cost, and is applicable for in-situ label-free detection, therefore, being potentially useful in the fields of disease diagnosis, food safety monitoring, and environmental pollution detection.

A novel MMP-responsive nanoplatform with transformable magnetic resonance property for quantitative tumor bioimaging and synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy

Quantifying bio-targeted markers in the tumor microenvironment through non-invasive approaches remains challenging. In this study, a novel matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) responsive nanoplatform (PMP@USPIO/DOX, PMPSD) with transformable magnetic resonance property is designed for quantitative tumor bioimaging and synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy. The nanoplatform acts as a T2 contrast agent in physiological conditions due to the ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) aggregation state, whereas in the tumor microenvironment, the nanoclusters are dissociated by MMP9, thus transforming the nanoplatform into a T1 contrast agent. T1&T2 weighted image and T1&T2 maps are utilized to quantitatively study the correlation between MRI signal changes and MMP9 concentrations and to evaluate MMP9 activity. In addition, the PMP@USPIO/DOX nanoplatform possesses excellent photothermal properties. PMPSD combined with laser irradiation is more effective than single chemo-/photothermal therapy, and up-regulation of the MMP9 level in the tumor can further improve the therapeutic effect. The nanoplatform is of great significance in evaluating disease prognosis and non-invasive monitoring of drug release. The concept reported here provides a creative idea for the non-invasive quantitative study of the tumor microenvironment.

Nanoarchitectured Graphene Organic Framework for Drug Delivery and Chemo-photothermal Synergistic Therapy.

The combination of phototherapy and chemotherapy has received extensive attention in the field of cancer therapy. Hence, graphene organic framework (GOF) with a large d-spacing was prepared by solvothermal method, and a novel nanocomposite based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was developed, which effectively achieved a photothermal-chemotherapy synergistic treatment. When the feeding ratio was 1:1.6, the DOX loading capacity was 18.51%, and the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposite possessed unobvious pH response characteristic, as well as the cumulative release of DOX reached 54.17% at 42°C in the acidic environment (pH = 5.0). The nanocarriers also showed excellent photothermal property and photothermal stability in vitro. In addition, under 808nm near-infrared laser (NIR) irradiation, the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposites generated a large amount of heat, which significantly enhanced the synergistic antitumor effect of in vitro photothermal-chemotherapy. Furthermore, the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposites exhibited significantly increased cytotoxicity in the NIR compared with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, suggesting that the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy has excellent antitumor capacity. Therefore, porous GOF nanocarriers may have great potential in combined anti-tumour therapy.

Transparent, photothermal and stretchable alginate-based hydrogels for remote actuation and human motion sensing

Multifunctional hydrogels show potential applications in actuators and wearable sensors. However, it is still a challenge to develop a photothermal responsive conductive hydrogel with high transparency, mechanical properties, broad sensing range, and low-temperature resistance. In this work, a transparent, photothermal responsive, and highly stretchable alginate-based hydrogels was feasibly constructed by adding two-dimensional non-layered molybdenum dioxide nanosheets (2D-MoO2) to sodium alginate/polyacrylamide mixture and then soaking into the calcium chloride solution. The introduction of 2D-MoO2 renders the hydrogels excellent photothermal properties and controllable photomechanical deformation under near-infrared irradiation, while maintaining high transparency (~60 %).The calcium ions give the hydrogel excellent mechanics, conductivity, and freezing tolerance concurrently. The transparent hydrogel-based sensor shows wide sensing range (0–1800 %) and cycling stability in detecting deformations and real-time human motions even in harsh environments. Therefore, this work provides a new route for generating transparent multifunctional hydrogels towards the applications of remote actuation and strain sensing.

Multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticles for pH-response and photothermy enhanced osteosarcoma therapy

The recurrence and bone defect of malignant osteosarcoma postsurgical treatment have gained remarkable attention. Therefore, the development of multifunctional treatment platform is urgently desirable to achieve efficient tumor treatment and bone regeneration. In this paper, a multifunctional nanomaterial using mesoporous silica (MSN) as platform modified with quercetin (Qr), collagen (Col) and dopamine (PDA) was developed. Our findings demonstrated that the nanoparticles designed in this work had excellent photothermal properties and pH responsiveness. In addition, the nanoparticles had outstanding anti-tumor ability and could killed Saos-2 cells within 10 min under 808 nm laser irradiation owing to the synergistic effect of hyperthermia and Qr. Besides, the modification of PDA and Col endows the nanoparticles with excellent osteogenic activity.

Design, Synthesis, and Application of Carbon Dots With Synergistic Antibacterial Activity.

The diversity of bacteria and their ability to acquire drug resistance lead to many challenges in traditional antibacterial methods. Photothermal therapies that convert light energy into localized physical heat to kill target microorganisms do not induce resistance and provide an alternative for antibacterial treatment. However, many photothermal materials cannot specifically target bacteria, which can lead to thermal damage to normal tissues, thus seriously affecting their biological applications. Here, we designed and synthesized bacteria-affinitive photothermal carbon dots (BAPTCDs) targeting MurD ligase that catalyzes the synthesis of peptidoglycan (PG) in bacteria. BAPTCDs presented specific recognition ability and excellent photothermal properties. BAPTCDs can bind to bacteria very tightly due to their chiral structure and inhibit enzyme activity by competing with D-glutamic acid to bind to MurD ligases, thus inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial walls. It also improves the accuracy of bacteria treatment by laser irradiation. Through the synergy of biochemical and physical effects, the material offers outstanding antibacterial effects and potentially contributes to tackling the spread of antibiotic resistance and facilitation of antibiotic stewardship.

Rational Design of Multifunctional CuS Nanoparticle‐PEG Composite Soft Hydrogel‐Coated 3D Hard Polycaprolactone Scaffolds for Efficient Bone Regeneration

Abstract3D‐printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds have been extensively studied for application in bone tissue engineering. However, PCL‐based scaffolds with enhanced bioactivity and intelligent delivery capability for bone repair remains challenging. Herein, CuS nanoparticle‐PEG soft hydrogel‐coated 3D hard polycaprolactone scaffolds (denoted as CuS‐PEG‐PCL scaffold) are rationally designed for efficient bone regeneration. CuS nanoparticles cross‐linked PEG hydrogel (CuS‐PEG‐hydrogel) endows the PCL‐based scaffold with excellent photothermal properties and stable soft elasticity, while the PCL scaffold provides excellent mechanical performance. Upon exposure to 1064 nm near‐infrared (NIR) light irradiation, dexamethasone sodium phosphate (Dexp), stored in the CuS‐PEG‐PCL scaffold, can be controllably released, which efficiently promotes osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). In addition, the combination of mild heating at 42 ± 0.5 °C further promoted osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Subsequently, this Dexp‐loaded CuS‐PEG‐PCL scaffold (D‐CuS‐PEG‐PCL scaffold) with NIR light treatment at the tibial defect of rats presented the highest bone regeneration capacity. These findings demonstrate that the Dexp‐loaded CuS‐PEG‐hydrogel can effectively modify the 3D printed PCL scaffold. Therefore, this multifunctional scaffold with a soft‐hard hybrid structure has the potential to become an advanced drug delivery vehicle in the treatment of large bone defects.
