Physical and bio-control methodologies for integrated management of buffalo fly-Haematobia exigua (Diptera: Muscidae)

Haematobia exigua, the buffalo fly, is a common ectoparasite of buffaloes and cattle in India causing economic losses and underlines the necessity of effective control strategies against them. The present study was planned to evaluate larvicidal activity of few methods for physical and biological control for integarated management of Haematobia exigua flies. Out of four bacterial bio-control agents evaluated by in-vitro assay and Probit analysis, two bacteria i. e. Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis and Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki showed excellent larvicidal activity against H. exigua with LC50 value of 134 and 135 mg per liter of water respectively. Whereas, other two bacteria i. e. Bacillus weihenstephanensis WSBC and KBAB4 failed to show desired larvicidal activity. It can be concluded that B ti and B tk have future as effective bacterial agents (BCAs) in the control and integrated management of buffalo and horn fly. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory and on field for judging the efficacy of a physical method of tightly covering dung pats with polythene sheet for control of larvae of H. exigua. The laboratory result showed only 14.73% larvae were survived and developed per 100 gm of the faeces in the pot covered with polythene sheet as against significantly higher number 78.33% in the control group. During field trial, average larval count from dung pits before the experiment was 86.33 per 250 gm of faeces and it has been significantly reduced to 11.80 after covered with polythene sheets for two weeks. It indicated that physical method of covering the dung pits works immensely and thus can be inducted in IPM program as one of the effective physical control alternatives.

Biogenic Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Mediated by the Extract of Terminalia catappa Fruit Pericarp and Its Multifaceted Applications.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were biosynthesized by using the pericarp aqueous extract from Terminalia catappa Linn. These NPs were characterized using various analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and XRD studies of the nanoparticles reported mean size as 12.58 nm nanocrystals with highest purity. Further SEM analysis emphasized the nanoparticles to be spherical in shape. The functional groups responsible for capping and stabilizing the NPs were identified with FTIR studies. DLS studies of the synthesized NPs reported ζ potential as -10.1 mV and exhibited stable colloidal solution. These characterized ZnO-NPs were evaluated for various biological applications such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, genotoxic, biocompatibility, and larvicidal studies. To explore its multidimensional application in the field of medicine. NPs reported a potential antimicrobial activity at a concentration of 200 μg/mL against bacterial strains in the decreasing order of Streptococcus pyogenes > Streptococcus aureus > Streptococcus typhi > Streptococcus aeruginosa and against the fungi Candida albicans. In vitro studies of RBC hemolysis with varying concentrations of NPs confirm their biocompatibility with IC50 value of 211.4 μg/mL. The synthesized NPs' DPPH free radical scavenging activity was examined to extend their antioxidant applications. The antiproliferation and genetic toxicity were studied with meristematic cells of Allium cepa reported with mitotic index (MI index) of 1.2% at the concentration of 1000 μg/mL. NPs exhibited excellent Larvicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus larvae with the highest mortality rate as 98% at 4 mg/L. Our findings elicit the therapeutic potentials of the synthesized zinc oxide NPs.

Discovery of Novel Diamides Scaffold Containing Monofluoro-acrylamides Activating the Insect Ryanodine Receptor.

The research and development of organofluorine chemistry has flourished; in particular, monofluoroalkene has aroused considerable interest from medicinal and organic chemists. It is a significant attempt to introduce monofluoroalkene into agrochemicals. In this study, monofluoroalkene was introduced into diamide molecules and inserted between the aliphatic amide and benzene ring, and 44 compounds have been successfully synthesized. The bioassay results showed that compounds with monofluoro-acrylamide moiety (Z-isomers) had excellent larvicidal activity against lepidopteran pests at 5 mg·L-1. The LC50 values of compounds B16, B18, and B21 against Mythimna separata were 1.02, 1.32, and 0.78 mg·L-1, respectively. 3D-QSAR analysis including the CoMFA model and the CoMSIA model was conducted to illustrate the contributions of steric, electrostatic, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bond fields on the bioactivity. Moreover, typical symptoms caused by chlorantraniliprole including dehydration, shrinkage, and blackening were also observed on the test larvae treated with monofluoro-acrylamide diamide compounds. M. separata central neurons calcium imaging experiment of compound B18 indicated that the monofluoro-acrylamide diamide compounds were potential insect ryanodine receptor activators. The molecular docking was performed in the CHL binding domain of Plutella xylostella RyR and revealed that the predicted binding mode of compound B21 was slightly different from that of CHL. The MM|GBSA dG Bind values of B21 and CHL with P. xylostella RyR were respectively -85.797 and -95.641 kcal·mol-1. The present work explored the insecticidal properties of a new diamide scaffold containing a monofluoro-acrylamide fragment and extended the application of monofluoroalkene in the agrochemical field.

Application of Natural Bioresources to Sustainable Agriculture: A C-Glycoside Insecticide Based on N-Acetyl-glucosamine for Regulating Insect Molting of Ostrinia furnacalis

In order to increase the application of natural bioresources in drug discovery and development, a study on N-acetyl-glucosamine (GlcNAc) derivatives of chitin as green pesticides was necessary. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of novel C-glycoside naphthalimides using GlcNAc as a starting material. Compound 10l showed high inhibitory activity against OfHex1 (IC50 = 1.77 μM), with a nearly 30-fold increase in activity over our previously reported C-glycoside CAUZL-A (IC50 = 47.47 μM). By observing the morphology of the Ostrinia furnacalis, we found that the synthesized compounds significantly inhibited the molting process. In addition, we further explored the morphological changes of the inhibitor-treated O. furnacalis cuticle using scanning electron microscopy. This is the first study to validate the insecticidal mechanism of OfHex1 inhibitors at the microscale level. Several compounds also exhibited excellent larvicidal activity against Plutella xylostella. Moreover, the toxicity measurements and predictions indicated that the C-glycoside naphthalimides have little effect on the natural enemy Trichogramma ostriniae and rats. Together, our results highlight an approach for the design of green pesticides, taking advantage of natural bioresources to control pests in agriculture.

Environmentally-Friendly Pesticidal Activities of Callicarpa and Karomia Essential Oils from Vietnam and Their Microemulsions.

There is an ongoing interest to identify alternative pesticidal agents to avoid the chronic problems associated with synthetic pesticides. Essential oils have shown promise as botanical pest control agents. In the present study, the essential oils of four members of the Lamiaceae (Callicarpa candicans, C. erioclona, C. macrophylla, and Karomia fragrans; Vietnamese names: Nàng nàng, Tu châu lông mem, Tu châu lá to and Cà diện, respectively), obtained from wild populations in Vietnam, have been obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oils were formulated into microemulsions and the essential oils and their microemulsions were screened for mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and for molluscicidal activity against Pomacea canaliculata. Atractylone and (E)-caryophyllene dominated the volatiles of C. candicans (CCEO) and C. erioclona (CEEO), while the major component in C. macrophylla (CMEO) and K. fragrans (KFEO) was (E)-caryophyllene. The essential oils and microemulsions of both C. candicans and C. erioclona exhibited excellent larvicidal activity against all three mosquito species (Ae. aegypti, Ae. albopictus, and Cx. quinquefasciatus) with LC50 values <10 μg/mL. Additionally, the larvicidal activity of the microemulsions were significantly improved compared with their free essential oils, especially for C. candicans and C. erioclona. All four essential oils and their microemulsions showed excellent molluscicidal activity with LC50 <10 μg/mL. In most cases, the essential oils and microemulsions showed greater pesticidal activity against target organisms than the non-target freshwater fish, Oreochromis niloticus. The in silico studies on physicochemical and ADMET properties of the major components in the studied essential oils were also investigated and most of the compounds possessed a favorable ADMET profile. Computational modeling studies of the studied compounds demonstrated a favorable binding interaction with the mosquito odorant-binding protein target and support atractylone, β-selinene, and caryophyllene oxide as potential inhibitors. Based on the observed pesticidal activities of the essential oils and their microemulsions, the Callicarpa species and K. fragrans should be considered for potential cultivation and further exploration as botanical pesticidal agents.

Larvicidal and pupicidal activity of phyto-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles against dengue vector aedes aegypti

This study aimed to assess the phyto-synthesizing potential of Tarenna asiatica methanol leaf extract as well as its larvicidal and pupicidal potential against Aedes aegypti larvae. According to the findings of this study, the methanol leaf extract of T. asiatica has the potential to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles from zinc acetate dehydrate. Standard analytical techniques such as UV–visible spectrophotometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction analysis, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Energy Dispersive X-Ray were used to characterize the phyto-synthesized nanoparticles. The zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized ranged in size from 22.35 to 31.27 nm and was spherical in shape. These nanoparticles demonstrated excellent larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae in the second, third, and fourth in stars, as well as significant pupicidal activity. These findings suggest that the methanol leaf extract of T. asiatica synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles, which could be used to develop mosquito repellents.

Larvicidal and pupicidal activity of crude ethyl acetate extract fraction-7a of Cymodocea serrulata on Culex quinquefasciatus

Finding a potential bioactive compound against a specific mosquito vector is an urgent requirement. Thus, this research was designed to separate the significant compounds present in the crude ethyl acetate extract of Cymodocea serrulata through Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Column Chromatography (CC), and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Furthermore, the larvicidal and pupicidal activity of different concentrations (100, 300, 500, 700, and 900 g mL−1) of separated fraction against 4th instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus in 24 h of treatment. Interestingly, 7 fractions were obtained from crude ethyl acetate extract by TLC. One fraction (7a) from out of 7 was further separated into fractions 7a and 7b through CC and preparative TLC. Furthermore, the HPLC analysis result revealed that the fraction-7a contained 2 major peaks and 25 minor peaks. The fraction 7a was selected based on the Rf value and examined their larvicidal and pupicidal activity on 4th instar larvae and pupa of C. quinquefasciatus. Interestingly, the increased concentration (900 µg mL−1) of fraction-7a of ethyl acetate extracts of C. serrulata showed excellent larvicidal and pupicidal activities as 98.66 ± 1.88 % and 98 ± 5.65 %, respectively. These findings imply that the fraction 7a of C. serrulata ethyl acetate extract could be used as a mosquito vector control agent.

Design, synthesis, biologically evaluation and molecular docking of C-glycosidic oximino carbamates as novel OfHex1 inhibitors

The inhibition of function-specific β-N-acetyl-D–hexosaminidases, such as OfHex1 from the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis), is a promising strategy for the development of green pesticides. Among reported OfHex1 inhibitors, glycosyl inhibitors show especially high inhibitory activity. In this study, a series of novel C-glycosidic oximino carbamate derivatives were designed using the OfHex1 crystal structure and synthesized. Among the C-Glycoside derivatives studied, compound 7k exhibited the best inhibitory activity against OfHex1 (IC50 = 47.47 μM). Compound 7k also exhibited excellent larvicidal activity against Plutella xylostella. The potential inhibitory mechanism of 7k was studied using molecular docking. Notably, compound 7k is the first reported C-glycoside inhibitor of OfHex1. These results provide direction for the rational design of novel OfHex1 inhibitors.

Bio-efficacy of Mangifera leaf extracts on mortality of Aedes aegypti and inhibition of egg hatching.

Background and Aim:To develop an environmentally friendly alternative to mosquito larvicides for vegetables, leaf extracts of Mangifera laurina, Mangifera casturi, Mangifera indica, Mangifera odorata, Mangifera caesia, and Mangifera foetida were prepared. This study aimed to determine the biological efficacy of several Mangifera leaf extracts on the mortality of Aedes aegypti mosquito and the inhibition of egg hatching.Materials and Methods:Extraction was performed in an organic solvent (methanol) using a Soxhlet extractor. The larvicidal potential of six leaves of Mangifera essential oil was evaluated against the third instar larvae of A. aegypti at concentrations of 1500, 2000, 3000, and 5000 ppm using the World Health Organization protocol. After Probit analysis, the 48 h LC50 and LC90 values of the essential oils were determined. The inhibitory effect on egg hatching was also tested at 160, 320, 480, and 640 ppm.Results:The extraction of essential oils from several Mangifera species had excellent larvicidal activity and inhibitory activity against A. aegypti egg hatching. The LC50/LC90 values were: M. casturi, 241/1964 ppm; M. laurina, 2739/4035 ppm; and M. caesia, 1831/2618 ppm. The inhibitory effect on hatching was 78% for M. foetida, 70% for M. caesia, and 59% for M. casturi.Conclusion:The test results indicate the potential of some Mangifera species for use as larvicides and inhibitors of egg hatching; thus, they have the potential to control A. aegypti in the early stages of development.

Discovery of evodiamine derivatives as potent insecticide candidates

In the search for novel more effective insecticides, natural products could be used as ideal template compounds due to their good environmental compatibility, various bioactivities, unique scaffolds and mode of action. We have found that natural product evodiamine, the main active component from the fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth, displayed obvious insecticidal activities against lepidoptera pests. To continue our research, a series of evodiamine derivatives 3a-3aa were rationally designed and synthesized. The larvicidal activities results indicated that most of target compounds displayed better efficacy than evodiamine, matrine, and rotenone against Mythimna separata, Plutella xylostella and Helicoverpa armigera, among which 3z exhibited excellent larvicidal activities (65% at 2.5 mg/L against M. separata, 75% at 1.0 mg/L against P. xylostella, and 85% 10 mg/L against H. armigera, respectively), much better than evodiamine (0%), matrine (0%), and rotenone (0%). The preliminary structure activity relationships demonstrated that the fluorine atom at the E ring of evodiamine had a positive influence on the larvicidal activity. The calcium imaging experiment studies indicated that 3z could act on the ryanodine receptor (RyR) of M. separata and was an effective calcium activator for RyR.

Larvicidal formulation containing N-tosylindole: A viable alternative to chemical control of Aedes aegypti

Aedes aegypti is currently a major public health problem. This mosquito is responsible for the spread of infectious diseases that have been causing epidemics worldwide. Surfactant-stabilized systems, such as microemulsions, liquid-crystalline precursors and liquid crystals, are promising sustained delivery formulations of hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances. These systems are biocompatible water-soluble reservoirs for N-tosylindole exhibiting biological activity against Aedes aegypti Linn. (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae. The ternary diagram displayed four regions: microemulsion (ME), liquid crystal (LC), emulsion (EM) and phase separation (PS). PLM and SAXS distinguished microemulsions, lamellar and hexagonal phase liquid crystals. The system had a lethal concentration of 50% (LC50 = 0.1 ppm, 0.36 µM) lower than pure N-tosylindole (0.24 ppm, 0.88 µM), which has limitations in aqueous media. Furthermore, the formulation displayed no toxicity to Artemia sp., a non-target organism. The system exhibited excellent larvicidal activity as an alternative to commercial larvicides that have shown resistance and toxicity to the environment by Ae. aegypti larvae due to prolonged use. In addition, a two-fold increase in potency was observed.

Azobenzene-Semicarbazone Enables Optical Control of Insect Sodium Channels and Behavior.

Photopharmacology uses molecular photoswitches to establish control over the action of bioactive molecules. The application of photopharmacology in the research of invertebrate sodium channels has not been investigated. Here we report several photochromic ligands of metaflumizone. One ligand, termed ABM04, underwent reversible trans-cis isomerization under ultraviolet or blue light irradiation. cis-ABM04 had excellent larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae with an LC50 value of 4.39 μM and showed insecticidal activity against Mythimna separata with an LC50 value of 7.19 μM. However, trans-ABM04 was not found to have biological activity. ABM04 (10 μM) can induce depolarization of dorsal unpaired median neurons and enable the real-time photoregulation of mosquito larval behavior. The precise regulation of invertebrate sodium channels is realized for the first time, which provides a new strategy for the basic and accurate research of invertebrate sodium channels.

Azobenzene-isoxazoline as photopharmacological ligand for optical control of insect GABA receptor and behavior.

Photopharmacology is a fast-growing photonics-based technology, which realizes the high-resolution regulation of drugs in time and space through light. The purpose of this research was to introduce photochromic groups into the isoxazoline structure to realize the regulation of γ-Aminobutyric acid receptors (GABARs) targeting insect behavior. Azobenzene-Fluralaner analogs ABF02, ABF03 and ABF04 have been proven to have larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae. Cis-ABF03 had excellent larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae with a median lethal concentration (LC50 ) value of 1.63, which was better than that of trans-ABF03 (LC50 =3.90). In particular, ABF03 also showed insecticidal activity against Mythimna separata. Further experiments showed that ABF03 (1μm) induced depolarization of dorsal unpaired median neurons after ultraviolet light irradiation, enhanced affinity to the receptor, and blocked ligand-gated chloride channels of GABARs. ABF03 (1μm) realized the real-time photoregulation of the behavior of mosquito larvae, which indicated that the synthesized ligand can complete the binding and off-target action of drugs and targets in vivo under the regulation of light. Azobenzene-Isoxazoline as photopharmacological ligand was synthesized and evaluated for optical control of insect GABARs and behavior for the first time. ABF03 completed the differential regulation of cockroach neurons and the real-time reversible regulation of insect behavior. The establishment of photochromic ligands provides a new strategy for basic and convenience-oriented research on GABARs in invertebrates. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Highly Efficient Synthesis and Acaricidal and Insecticidal Activities of Novel Oxazolines with N-Heterocyclic Substituents.

Nitrogen heterocycles are found in numerous natural products, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a series of novel 2,4-diphenyl-1,3-oxazolines bearing various N-heterocyclic substituents via a 4-(4-(chloromethyl)phenyl)-2-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-4,5-dihydrooxazole intermediate generated by a modified Ritter reaction. Evaluation of the activities of the oxazolines against carmine spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus) by means of a leaf-dipping method showed that most of the compounds exhibited good to excellent larvicidal and ovicidal activities. In particular, five compounds (one with a phthalimidyl group and four with a substituted indolyl group) have lower LC50 values than the commercial acaricide etoxazole (0.088 mg/L against larvae and 0.128 mg/L against eggs). This work lays a foundation for the development of novel acaricides.

Larvicidal Activity of Cinnamic Acid Derivatives: Investigating Alternative Products for Aedes aegypti L. Control.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits the virus that causes dengue, yellow fever, Zika and Chikungunya viruses, and in several regions of the planet represents a vector of great clinical importance. In terms of mortality and morbidity, infections caused by Ae. aegypti are among the most serious arthropod transmitted viral diseases. The present study investigated the larvicidal potential of seventeen cinnamic acid derivatives against fourth stage Ae. aegypti larvae. The larvicide assays were performed using larval mortality rates to determine lethal concentration (LC50). Compounds containing the medium alkyl chains butyl cinnamate (7) and pentyl cinnamate (8) presented excellent larvicidal activity with LC50 values of around 0.21–0.17 mM, respectively. While among the derivatives with aryl substituents, the best LC50 result was 0.55 mM for benzyl cinnamate (13). The tested derivatives were natural compounds and in pharmacology and antiparasitic studies, many have been evaluated using biological models for environmental and toxicological safety. Molecular modeling analyses suggest that the larvicidal activity of these compounds might be due to a multi-target mechanism of action involving inhibition of a carbonic anhydrase (CA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC2), and two sodium-dependent cation-chloride co-transporters (CCC2 e CCC3).

Metal oxide nanoparticle synthesis (ZnO-NPs) of Knoxia sumatrensis (Retz.) DC. Aqueous leaf extract and It's evaluation of their antioxidant, anti-proliferative and larvicidal activities.

In around the world, mosquito control is considered a most important because of the incapable of synthetic insecticides and the ecological pollution about by them. In this manner, need the eco-friendly insecticides to efficient control the mosquito disease is the need of the hour. We synthesized the eco-friendly of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using the Knoxia sumatrensis aqueous leaf extract (Ks-ALE) as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesis of ZnO-NPs was confirmed by UV with an absorption peak at 354 nm. ZnO-NPs crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra revealed the chloride, cyclic alcohols, sulfonamies, carboxylic acids, oximes, phosphines, alkenes and alcohol & phenol. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that the NP’s are rod shaped with 50–80 nm size and also energy dispersive spectra (EDaX) spectra showed presence of zinc. Antioxidant assay showed superior activity and evidenced by DPPH, ABTS and H2O2 radical assays. Furthermore, the ZnO-NPs exhibited strong activity in MCF-7 cell line with IC50 value is 58.87 μg/mL. Mosquito larvicidal activity of ZnO-NPs produced significant activity and excellent larvicidal activity was noticed in Cx. quinquefasciatus with LC50 0.08, mg/mL and LC9019.46 mg/mL. This study suggests that synthesized ZnO-NPs using Knoxia sumatrensis leaf extract have good biological activities and it makes them an ideal candidate for pharmacological studies.

Chemical Compositions, Mosquito Larvicidal and Antimicrobial Activities of Leaf Essential Oils of Eleven Species of Lauraceae from Vietnam.

The Lauraceae is a family rich in aromatic and medicinal plants. Likewise, essential oils derived from members of this family have demonstrated a myriad of biological activities. It is hypothesized that members of the Lauraceae from Vietnam will yield essential oils that may be useful in controlling mosquito populations and treating microbial infections. In this work, the leaf essential oils of eleven species of Lauraceae (Beilschmiedia erythrophloia, B. robusta, B. yunnanensis, Cryptocarya concinna, C. impressa, C. infectoria, Litsea viridis, Machilus balansa, M. grandifolia, Neolitsea ellipsoidea, and Phoebe angustifolia) have been obtained by hydrodistillation and the chemical compositions analyzed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The essential oils were screened for larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus, and for antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, and Candida albicans. The leaf essential oil of N. ellipsoidea, rich in (E)-β-ocimene (87.6%), showed excellent larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti with a 24 h LC50 of 6.59 μg/mL. The leaf essential oil of C. infectoria, dominated by germacrene D (55.5%) and bicyclogermacrene (11.4%), exhibited remarkable larvicidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus (48 h LC50 = 0.40 μg/mL). N. ellipsoidea leaf essential oil also demonstrated notable antibacterial activity against E. faecalis and B. cereus with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 16 μg/mL, while the leaf essential oil of C. impressa showed excellent anticandidal with an MIC of 16 μg/mL. Leaf essential oils from the Lauraceae should be considered for utilization as alternative agents for controlling mosquito populations and as antimicrobial agents.

Chemical Composition of Actinodaphne pilosa Essential Oil From Vietnam, Mosquito Larvicidal Activity, and Antimicrobial Activity

Leaves of Actinodaphne pilosa were collected at 2 different seasons from the Pù Hoạt Nature Reserve, Vietnam. The leaf samples were hydrodistilled to give essential oils, which were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry and GC-flame ionization detection. The major components in the essential oils were α-pinene, ( Z)-β-ocimene, ( E)-β-ocimene, β-caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, and spathulenol. The essential oils were screened for antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans, as well as mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus. Actinodaphne pilosa leaf essential oils showed broad antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration = 32, 64, 64, 16, and 16 μg/mL against E. faecalis, S. aureus, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans, respectively) and excellent larvicidal activity (24-hour 50% lethal concentration = 19.0, 24.7, and 48.1 μg/mL against A. aegypti, A. albopictus, and C. quinquefasciatus, respectively).

In vitro assessment of antimicrobial, antibiofilm and larvicidal activities of bioactive nickel metal organic framework

Multidrug resistant bacteria and mosquito vectors have developed global health threat causing devastating diseases. Novel materials with potent antimicrobial and larvicidal strategies are of urgent need for eradication of disease causing pathogens. The present study focuses on simple fabrication of nickel metal organic framework (Ni-MOFs) with multifunctional biological activities. The synthesized Ni-MOFs particles were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM analysis. The average size of the Ni-MOF was observed to be 761 nm. The experimental results revealed that Ni-MOFs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against extended spectrum β lactamase strain and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibiofilm studies revealed that Ni-MOF exhibited dose dependant inhibition of biofilm formation against MRSA strains ATCC 33591 and clinical strain N7 with IC50 value of 15.19 ± 1.41; 25.14 ± 0.75 μg/ml respectively. Further, larvicidal studies against viral vector Aedes aegypti illustrated that Ni-MOF exhibited excellent larvicidal activity in concentration dependant manner with LC50 value of 43.62 ± 1.25 μg/ml and LC90 value of 74.72 ± 1.97 μg/ml respectively. Safety evaluation study using in vivo model Artemia salina indicated that Ni-MOFs was observed to be non-toxic toxic at lower doses, while at highest dose it exhibits toxicity with LC50 value of 138.33 ± 3.72 μg/ml. The biocompatible nature of Ni-MOFs depicts it as promising nanocarrier for the control of bacterial infection and mosquito population through eco-friendly approach.

High effectiveness of an adulticide-larvicide formulation for field control of sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the city of Clorinda, Argentina

In Argentina, Leishmania infantum (syn. L. chagasi) is the etiologic agent of human visceral leishmaniosis (HVL), and Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) is the main vector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and residual effect of two commercial insecticide formulations, one with permethrin and pyriproxyfen as active ingredients (Dragon Max®) and the other with only permethrin (Flop®) for the control of sandflies. Both formulations were applied in chicken coops and other surroundings structures of the peridomicile of urban houses in Clorinda, Formosa (Argentina). Entomological monitoring was carried out weekly for 44 weeks after the intervention. The results showed great effectiveness and residual effect up to 21 weeks post-intervention for Dragon Max®. This result could be explained by the excellent larvicidal activity of the Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) pyriproxyfen against the immature forms of phlebotomines and by the delay on the restoration of the natural threshold of the vector population in treated sites.
