Occupational Therapy Interventions for Caregivers of People Who Have Experienced Stroke

Abstract Evidence Connection articles provide a clinical application of systematic reviews developed in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Evidence-Based Practice Project. Each article in this series summarizes the evidence from published reviews on a given topic and presents an application of the evidence to a related clinical case. Evidence Connection articles illustrate how the research evidence from the reviews can be used to inform and guide clinical decision-making. In this Evidence Connection article, we provide a case report of a caregiver of a patient who had experienced a stroke. The occupational therapy evaluation and intervention process is described.

Occupational Therapy Interventions After a Sports-Related Concussion

Each article in this series summarizes the evidence from published reviews on a given topic and presents an application of the evidence to a related clinical case. This Evidence Connection article presents a case report of a college student receiving occupational therapy services after sustaining repeated sports-related concussions. The occupational therapy evaluation and intervention process is described. Systematic review briefs on interventions for people with traumatic brain injury were published in Vol. 76 (Suppl. 2) of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.

Occupational Therapy to Improve Activities of Daily Living of People With Parkinson's Disease.

Evidence Connection articles are offered by the American Occupational Therapy Association's Evidence-Based Practice Program to inform and assist occupational therapy practitioners in methods that translate findings from the literature into usable knowledge for daily practice. These articles can guide professional reasoning and help practitioners operationalize findings from systematic reviews into practical strategies that can improve patient outcomes and support evidence-based practice. This Evidence Connection article is based on findings from a systematic review of interventions within the scope of occupational therapy practice to improve performance with activities of daily living (ADLs) for adults with Parkinson's disease (Doucet etal., 2021). In this article, we present a case study of an older adult with Parkinson's disease. We discuss suggested evaluation tools and intervention strategies that might be used as part of occupational therapy to address limitations and meet his desired needs for improved participation in ADLs. A client-centered, evidence-based plan was constructed for this case.

Occupational Therapy Interventions to Support Feeding and Toileting in Children From Birth to Age 5 Years

In this Evidence Connection article, I describe a case report of a young child receiving early intervention services and outline the occupational therapy evaluation and intervention processes for supporting this child’s activities of daily living in the home and early childhood education setting. Findings from the systematic reviews on this topic were published in the March/April 2020 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and in AOTA’s Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Early Childhood: Birth–5 Years. In this Evidence Connection article, we describe a case report of a child receiving occupational therapy services and summarize the evaluation and intervention processes for supporting sleep, activities of daily living, and social participation. The practice guideline on this topic was published in the July/August 2020 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (Cahill & Beisbier, 2020).

Evidence Connection articles provide a clinical application of systematic reviews developed in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association's (AOTA's) Evidence-Based Practice Project. This article presents a case example of a young child with autism spectrum disorder who receives occupational therapy evaluation and intervention in natural environments (home and child care center). Systematic review findings supporting enhancement of key life occupations through interventions to develop cognitive, motor, social-emotional, and self-care skills for young children were published in AOTA's Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Early Childhood: Birth-5 Years (Frolek Clark & Kingsley, 2020) and the March/April 2020 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (Gronski & Doherty, 2020; Kingsley et al., 2020; Tanner et al., 2020). Each article in the Evidence Connection series applies evidence from the published reviews on a topic to a related case. These articles are designed to promote application of the evidence to practice.
