3D‐Printed Gelatin‐Based Scaffold Crosslinked by Genipin: Evaluation of Mechanical Properties and Biological Effect

ABSTRACTIn this study, scaffolds based on natural polymer gelatin A, blended with polyvinylpyrrolidone were crosslinked by genipin (0.5 and 1 wt%), in order to investigate their mechanical performance and potential for biomedical application. Semi‐solid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing technique was used, enabling in situ crosslinking of the blend during processing. Swelling test showed that the swelling ratio reduces with higher concentration of genipin due to an increased crosslinking. The FTIR analysis confirmed the crosslinking of scaffolds by genipin. DSC analysis and mechanical testing have shown improved thermal and mechanical properties. Morphological analysis of scaffolds by FESEM showed increased toughening of the material with the crosslinking. Tensile strength and microhardness showed a significant rise in scaffolds with the increase in genipin content, which was up to 93.8% and 125.3%, respectively. These findings were in accordance with morphological features present in samples. The biological effect of the scaffold matrix system was evaluated by qualitative and quantitative cytotoxicity assessment in vitro, demonstrating the absence of cytotoxicity in tested preparations in a direct test. The cytotoxicity index based on the metabolic activity of cells in an indirect test showed up to 20% reduction of viability compared with the control, confirming the absence of cytotoxicity, which was additionally verified by propidium iodine staining of the cells exposed to scaffolds. The presented gelatin‐based crosslinked scaffolds obtained by 3D printing represent good candidates for biomedical application and future research that includes further in vitro and in vivo analysis.

Evaluation of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Modified Cement-Lime Mortar Containing Recycled Granite Powder Waste as a Partial Fine Aggregate Replacement

This study aims to incorporate building and demolition waste, including lime and crushed granite, as partial alternatives for cement and fine aggregates, respectively, and to devise a plan to reduce their environmental effect resulting from their extensive prevalence in substantial amounts. The use of lime in paste, mortar, and concrete has become a common practice to regulate the environment, save resources, and improve performance in various settings. The first stage of this study investigated the effects of replacing different proportions (0%, 15%, 25%, 35%, and 50%) of lime powder with cement on the physical and mechanical properties of mortar specimens over 7, 28, and 90 days. The next phase of the research examined the impacts of substituting varying quantities (ranging from 10% to 100%) of granite powder in 15 different mixes, while keeping a consistent water-to-binder ratio of 0.45. The last part of the study consisted of an examination of data from previous research on cement mortar and lime-modified cement mortar. This included testing on flowability, standard consistency, setting time, flexural strength, and compressive strength. The acquired data underwent a statistical analysis, which resulted in the development of equations that may predict the mechanical characteristics of changed cement mortar mixes. These equations also highlight the impact of certain physical qualities on compressive and flexural strength.

Evaluation and Prediction of Mechanical Properties According to Welding Methods of Ni 825/A516-70N Clad Plates

In this study, the microstructures and mechanical properties of different methods of FCAW (Flux-cored arc welding) + FCAW or FCAW + GTAW (Gas tungsten arc welding) welding on Ni825/A516-70N clad plate were investigated, using a double U groove angle on a laboratory scale. The amount of specimen deformation with FCAW + FCAW welding was ~1.5 mm, and that with FCAW + GTAW welding was ~3.6 mm. In the Vickers hardness tests, the average hardness value of the FCAW + GTAW welding specimens tended to be higher, and the hardness of the steel showed the same value. Also, in the tensile tests, the maximum strength and elongation of the FCAW + GTAW specimens were found to be higher. The SEM analysis of the welding boundaries of each specimen revealed the phenomenon of grain refinement in the specimens with FCAW + GTAW welding. This was due to the slow welding speed of this welding process and the rapid cooling rate caused by the relatively low layer thickness despite the relatively high number of weld passes. The computer simulation of the amounts of deformation were similar, with a value of 1.5 mm for FCAW + FCAW and 3.6 mm for the computer simulation, indicating the credibility of the simulation. In the computational simulation of butt welding, FCAW + GTAW showed high values for both residual stress and angular strain. The L-seam and C-seam of the demo vessel size were welded under the same conditions as the actual welding. The residual stress and angular deformation in the L-seam were 849 MPa and 2.3 mm for the FCAW + FCAW and 852 MPa and 2.9 mm for FCAW + GTAW. The residual stress and angular deformation in the C-seam were 920 MPa and 0.7 mm for FCAW + FCAW and 930 MPa and 0.9 mm for FCAW + GTAW, respectively.

Disintegration of commercial single-use plastics from synthetic and biobased origins and effects on plant growth

Many single–use plastic (SUP) options made of synthetic polymers, bio-based materials, and blends of both are available in the market and used in large quantities. The disintegration of eleven commercial SUP, marketed in Mexico as cups and plates, was investigated in an aerobic home compost environment at a laboratory scale over 180 days. An evaluation of chemical changes, surface morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties was conducted to ascertain the original composition of SUP and the progression of disintegration in samples that are challenging to clean from soil contamination. Furthermore, the impact of residual compost on barley (Hordeum vulgare) plant growth and its correlation with the leaching of heavy metals were explored. The bio-based SUP, but not those made of expanded polystyrene foam, showed a correlation between the disintegration degree (measured by weight loss into particles <2 mm) and a decrease in functional groups (observed by FT-IR), mechanical-thermal stability loss, and surface wear over disintegration time. For instance, the highest disintegration at 180 days was approximately 70% for wheat bran and palm leaf plates, followed by wheat plates and cellulose-PLA cups (60%). In addition to the components listed by the manufacturers, the FT-IR and DSC analysis revealed the presence of polyethylene and polypropylene in cellulose cups and sugarcane plates. These components, impede disintegration but contribute to preserving thermal resistance and hydrophobicity during utilization. Compost derived from expanded polystyrene foam SUP, with 90 days of disintegration, was rich in zinc and chromium and significantly decrease in the root length of the barley plant compared to the control. This demonstrates the necessity of considering the impact of the leaching of additives and secondary microplastics into the environment.

Nanostructured silver vanadate gel: Evaluation of physicochemical, mechanical, and antibiofilm properties against a five-species oral model

The aim of this study was to develop a gel with nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (β-AgVO3) and to evaluate its physicochemical, mechanical, and antibiofilm properties against a five-species oral model composed of Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The formulations were prepared with 0 % w/v (G0), 0.02 % w/v (G1), 0.05 % w/v (G2), and 0.12 % w/v (G3) β-AgVO3. The physicochemical properties of pH (n = 5), viscosity (n = 5), spreadability (n = 10) and syringability (n = 10) were evaluated, as well as the mechanical properties of hardness, cohesiveness, compressibility, elasticity, and adhesiveness using the texture profile assay (TPA) (n = 5) and ex vivo mucoadhesion (n = 5). The antibiofilm effect was assessed by counting colony-forming units (CFU/mL) (n = 8), metabolic activity (XTT) (n = 8), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (n = 1), using 0.12 % chlorhexidine gel (CG) as a positive control and G0 as a negative control. All groups demonstrated a neutral pH. G2 and G3 exhibited reduced viscosity and syringeability, along with increased spreadability. The incorporation of β-AgVO3 did not impact the gel's elasticity or cohesiveness but led to a decrease in hardness, compressibility, and adhesiveness. Ex vivo mucoadhesion was not altered by the addition of the nanomaterial. G3 showed a higher microbial reduction compared to GC and G0. It was concluded that the formulations with β-AgVO3 showed compatible physicochemical and mechanical properties for application and maintenance in the oral cavity. G3 showed superior antimicrobial effect against all microorganisms compared to GC and G0.

Evaluation of Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Bi-In-Sn/WO3 Composites for Efficient Heat Dissipation

Phase change materials (PCMs) offer promising solutions for efficient thermal management in electronic devices, energy storage systems, and renewable energy applications due to their capacity to store and release significant thermal energy during phase transitions. This study investigates the thermal and physical properties of Bi-In-Sn/WO3 composites, specifically for their use as phase change thermal interface materials (PCM-TIMs). The Bi-In-Sn/WO3 composite was synthesized through mechanochemical grinding, which enabled the uniform dispersion of WO3 particles within the Bi-In-Sn alloy matrix. The addition of WO3 particles markedly improved the composite’s thermal conductivity and transformed its physical form into a putty-like consistency, addressing leakage issues typically associated with pure Bi-In-Sn alloys. Microstructural analyses demonstrated the existence of a continuous interface between the liquid metal and WO3 phases, with no gaps, ensuring structural stability. Thermal performance tests demonstrated that the Bi-In-Sn/WO3 composite achieved improved thermal conductivity, and reduced volumetric latent heat, and there was a slight increase in thermal contact resistance with higher WO3 content. These findings highlight the potential of Bi-In-Sn/WO3 composites for utilization as advanced PCM-TIMs, offering enhanced heat dissipation, stability, and physical integrity for high-performance electronic and energy systems.

Mechanical Properties Evaluation of Fly Ash Bricks in Masonry Construction

Abstract: In the context of sustainable construction practices, the utilization of industrial by-products like fly ash in brick manufacturing is gaining popularity. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical properties of fly ash bricks, such as compressive strength, water absorption, flexural (rupture) strength, density, and efflorescence, and compares them to traditional burnt clay bricks commonly used in Pakistan. Experimental results show that fly ash bricks exhibit higher compressive and rupture strength and lower water absorption compared to conventional clay bricks. However, moderate levels of efflorescence in fly ash bricks suggest room for improvement in certain applications. The percent difference between fly ash and clay bricks has been calculated to quantify their suitability for masonry construction in Pakistan. This research contributes to the understanding of how fly ash bricks could serve as an alternative in construction materials with a lower environmental footprint.

Study on Evaluation and Prediction Model of Long-term Mechanical Properties of Fine-grained Saline Soil Subgrade

In this thorough examination, we dive deep into the long-lasting mechanical characteristics of fine-grained saline soil subgrades, aspiring to establish a precise and reliable collection of predictive models. Our objective is to provide a solid scientific footing for the design and ongoing upkeep of road networks within saline soil environments. Analyzing prolonged monitoring data across diverse highway subgrades within a prototypical saline soil locale, we unveil the intricate temporal fluctuations and environmental sensitivities of the soil’s mechanical properties under continuous load. Precisely, the subgrade’s compressive modulus dwindled by 15%, while shear strength declined by 8% over a five-year period. These trends intensify during rainy and scorching seasons, with drops surpassing 20% and 12% respectively. Leveraging this intricate data, we deploy nonlinear regression analysis and sophisticated machine learning algorithms to construct a predictive model tailored for the long-term mechanical properties of fine-grained saline soil roadbeds. This model integrates a multitude of factors, including load duration, temperature, humidity, and more, delivering accurate forecasts of key subgrade indicators like compressive modulus, shear strength, and beyond. In the verification stage, compared with the measured data, the error rate of the model prediction results is controlled within 5%, showing high prediction accuracy and stability. In addition, we also carried on the sensitivity analysis to the model, found that the load size and the duration of the impact on the mechanical properties of the roadbed is the most significant. Therefore, in the design of road engineering in saline soil areas, the influence of these factors should be fully considered, and reasonable engineering measures should be taken to ensure the safety and durability of roads. This study not only provides effective data support for the long-term mechanical performance evaluation of fine-grained saline soil roadbed, but also provides an important theoretical reference for engineering practice in related fields.

Comprehensive evaluation of mechanical properties, optoelectronic features, photovoltaic performance, and crystal stability of Ba3MX3 (M = As, Sb; X = Cl, Br, I)

Herein, the first-principles computations are utilized to study the optoelectronic properties, photovoltaic performance, crystal stability, and mechanical features of Ba3MX3 (M = As, Sb; X = Cl, Br, I). Through comprehensive structural stability evaluation, all compounds are determined to be stable. The results indicate that Ba3MX3 (M = As, Sb; X = Cl, Br) is brittle while both Ba3AsI3 and Ba3SbI3 are ductile. The HSE06-based electronic structure calculations show that the direct-gap nature is revealed for six compounds, and the energy band gaps are within the range of 1.35–1.65 eV. The fundamental band gap can be modulated by virtue of X-anion substitution. The low carrier effective masses are disclosed for these compounds. Their optical features exhibit that high solar absorption and weak reflectance and energy loss are observed. Ultimately, an ultra-high theoretical conversion efficiency of 31.9 % is implemented for Ba3MI3 (M = As, Sb). Besides, the remaining four compounds also have high conversion efficiencies within 29–30 %. From the suitability for practical applications, both Ba3AsI3 and Ba3SbI3 are chosen as the best candidates for the absorber layers of effective single-junction solar cells. Our findings unveil the suitability of these inorganic materials for optoelectronic applications.

Evaluation of optical and mechanical properties of crown materials produced by 3D printing.

The various advantages of crown materials produced using three-dimensional (3D) printers have increased their use in restorative and prosthetic dentistry in recent years. Accordingly, their optical and mechanical properties have become more important. To evaluate the mechanical, surface and optical properties of crown materials produced with 3D printing and computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), which has recently been used frequently in the clinic. The 3-point bending test was used to evaluate the mechanical properties of 2 different crown materials produced with 3D printing (Permanent Crown and VarseoSmile Crown Plus) and a crown material produced using CAD/CAM (Vita Enamic). After the initial color and surface roughness measurements were made, the specimens were immersed in 4 different solutions. The most translucent material was VarseoSmile Crown Plus (p < 0.05). In all specimens, coffee caused the most discoloration (p < 0.05). The effects of the solutions on the roughness were mostly observed in Permanent Crown specimens (p < 0.05). Vita Enamic showed the highest statistically significant values in terms of flexural strength (p < 0.05). The stereolithographic technique among the materials produced by 3D printing can be recommended for use in restorations due to its higher flexural strength.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of ABS-like Resin for Stereolithography Versus ABS for Fused Deposition Modeling in Three-Dimensional Printing Applications for Odontology.

This study investigates the differences in mechanical properties between acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) samples produced using fused deposition modeling (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA) using ABS filaments and ABS-like resin, respectively. The central question is to determine how these distinct printing techniques affect the properties of ABS and ABS-like resin and which method delivers superior performance for specific applications, particularly in dental treatments. The evaluation methods used in this study included Shore D hardness, accelerated aging, tensile testing, Izod impact testing, flexural resistance measured by a 3-point bending test, and compression testing. Poisson's ratio was also assessed, along with microstructure characterization, density measurement, confocal microscopy, dilatometry, wettability, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nanoindentation. It was concluded that ABS has the same hardness in both manufacturing methods; however, the FDM process results in significantly superior mechanical properties compared to SLA. Microscopy demonstrates a more accurate sample geometry when fabricated with SLA. It is also concluded that printable ABS is suitable for applications in dentistry to fabricate models and surgical guides using the SLA and FDM methods, as well as facial protectors for sports using the FDM method.

Thermal modification of fast-growing Firmiana simplex wood using tin alloy: Evaluation of physical and mechanical properties

Wood is an important structural material, but some undesirable properties limit its application in construction. This study investigated the effect of tin alloy thermal modification (TTM) on selected physical and mechanical properties of Firmiana simplex (Chinese bottletree) wood. Tin alloy thermal modification of F. simplex was performed in a tin alloy bath at two different temperatures (150 oC and 210 oC for 2 h and 8 h). Physical properties such as swelling, water absorption and density and mechanical properties like modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, impact bending, compression strength and Brinell hardness of tin alloy thermal modified and control samples were evaluated. The results showed that tin alloy thermal modification decreased the swelling of the wood to 4,85 %, 1,45 % and 6,99 % along the tangential, radial and volumetric coefficient and water absorption and density decreased to 53,10 % and 290 kg/m3 respectively compared to the control. Modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, impact bending, compression strength and Brinell hardness of tin alloy thermal modified F. simplex at 210 °C for 8 h decreased to 6366,1 MPa, 54,9 MPa, 2,7 MPa, 29,4 MPa and 1113,5 MPa respectively compared to the control. In conclusion, the tin alloy thermal modified wood at 210 oC significantly affected the physical and mechanical properties of the wood.

Evaluation of localized mechanical properties of modified N50 welded joints at cryogenic temperature through a digital image correlation technique

The modified N50 austenitic stainless steel has been determined to be applied as the superconducting magnet supporting material of the Chinese Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), especially the jacket material of the CICCs of both the TF coils and the CS coils and the case material of the TF coils, which inevitably requires welding connection. The welding process generally results in welding defects as well as degradation of cryogenic mechanical properties of metallurgical inhomogeneous zones. However, limited research has been reported to demonstrate the distinct localized performance of these zones at cryogenic temperature. The present paper presents an approach to characterize localized mechanical properties of the modified N50 welds at both room temperature (300 K) and cryogenic temperature (6 K). We identified the welding zone (WZ) through metallographic analysis and then the boundaries of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) were recognized by hardness measurements at room temperature. Finally, the localized optical digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to obtain the localized yield strength Rp0.2 and percentage extension e of the WZ, the HAZ, and the base metal (BM) at both room and cryogenic temperature, of which the observed trend is verified through comparison with that of hardness measurements at room temperature. The technique proposed provides the localized measurement of cryogenic tensile properties of weld metals and also presents experimental data on different zones of the modified N50 welded joints as a jacket material for the next-generation fusion reactors.

Influence of different composite curing agents on the rapid curing characteristics and mechanical performance of epoxy resins

To address the need for rapid in situ plugging and repair of hydraulic machinery and chemical pipelines and to resolve the issue that a single curing agent cannot simultaneously achieve rapid curing and excellent mechanical properties in epoxy resin systems, this study explores the use of composite curing agents. In particular, effective formulations are designed for mixing fast and slow curing agents, studying their effects on the curing behavior, curing quality, and mechanical properties of epoxy resins and elucidating their influence mechanisms. The results indicate that three resin systems meet the requirements for rapid curing (curing time within 30 min): 4A6B/EP, 2A8B/EP, and 0A10B/EP. Among them, 4A6B/EP exhibits the best curing quality and mechanical properties. In particular, 4A6B/EP demonstrates the lowest values of curing shrinkage rate, internal curing stress, average pore size, porosity, and cumulative pore volume. Its low internal stress and low defects reduce the stress concentration, while more efficient deflection and branching of internal cracks enhance its deformation resistance. Consequently, 4A6B/EP shows the highest microhardness, fracture toughness, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and elongation after fracture. Based on the comprehensive evaluation of rapid curing characteristics and mechanical properties, the 4A6B/EP system offers the best overall performance. Therefore, it is recommended as the preferred resin system for rapid plugging and repair of composite materials, providing a theoretical basis and technical support for boosting the application of epoxy resin composite materials in high-tech fields.

Evaluation of mechanical properties of natural fiber based polymer composite

Natural fiber based polymer composites are eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic materials, with greater mechanical properties, biodegradability, availability, ease of access, and affordability. Jute fiber is widely recognized as one of the most important and beneficial natural fibers due to its strength, durability, and biodegradability. In this study, the jute composite is designed and fabricated using a 5-layer jute and epoxy resin, utilizing the manual hand lay-up technique. The combination of 52.5 % jute and 47.5 % of epoxy resin and harder is found optimized to achieve the goals of improving the tensile strength and flexural strength, reducing the cost of epoxy resin, and promoting eco-friendliness and sustainability. Tensile testing was performed on a universal testing machine, while flexural testing was done with a three-point bending test. Experimentally, the composites reinforced with jute and epoxy resin were capable of achieving the required levels of tensile strength (42.91 MPa) and bending strength (69.30 MPa). To validate and visualize specimens, numerical analysis was performed on the ABAQUS simulation software. The numerical simulation utilized ASTM D3039 and ASTM D7264 as the specified requirements for tensile and flexural behavior. For validation, these tensile and flexural test results were then numerically analyzed and compared to the experimental data. Finally, composite design, fabrication, and optimization can improve mechanical properties, reduce composite weight, lower resin cost, and increase sustainability. The proposed design and composition can be implemented to achieve lightweight properties in various applications, such as car components, door handle sheets, bicycle seat backs, and luggage covers.

Development of the small punch fatigue test method based on the finite element method

The Small Punch Test (SPT) is a method of evaluating the mechanical properties of metallic materials that overcomes the limitations of the Uniaxial Test (UT), a traditional method of testing. Unlike UT, which provides strain data for each stress, SPT provides displacement data for each load. Therefore, SPT must be converted to UT to evaluate the mechanical properties of materials. However, SPT and UT employ disparate loading mechanisms. The difficulty in converting SPT to UT, which stems from the disparate loading mechanisms, has thus far limited SPT to mechanical property evaluation areas such as tensile and creep. This paper, therefore, aims to extend SPT to the fatigue domain, which is currently limited to the tensile and creep domains. The fatigue properties of metallic materials were evaluated based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) for the Small Punch Fatigue Test (SPFT). Moreover, the fatigue properties derived from the FEM for SPFT were converted to Uniaxial Fatigue Test (UFT) by employing the equivalent equation. Finally, an S-N curve was constructed based on SPFT and was validated by comparison with the same curve constructed based on UFT.
