Sonographic Evaluation of Chest Masses in Children

The sonographic appearances of 12 intrathoracic masses in children are presented. Seven out of 12 masses were malignant and presented with opaque hemithorax on chest X-ray. Different types of masses encountered were: Lymphoma, Neuroblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma, metastatic Ewing's sarcoma, Teratocarcinoma, Pseudotumor of the lung, Neuroenteric duplication cyst, Bronchogenic cyst and tubercular mediastinal lymph nodes.

Magnetic resonance imaging is an excellent cross-sectional imaging study for the evaluation of pediatric pathology. This article outlines its role in the evaluation of abdominal masses in children, including lesions arising in the adrenal glands, kidneys, liver, and pelvic organs.

Renal Masses in Children: An Integrated Imaging Approach to Diagnosis

In view of the continuing technologic advancements in the development and availability of diagnostic imaging modalities, it is appropriate to assess periodically the currently accepted approaches to the evaluation of renal masses in children. The roles, advantages, and disadvantages of plain film, intravenous urography, ultrasonography, radionuclide scintigraphy, computed tomography, angiography, and magnetic resonance imaging in the approach to the evaluation of renal masses in children are discussed. Ultrasonographic evaluation of abdominal masses in children.

Ultrasonography is a recently acquired diagnostic modality in our sub-continent. The initial experiences with this technique in 55 children with abdominal masses are presented. In 15 children ultrasonography merely confirmed the diagnosis which was arrived at by other means; a positive contribution towards the final diagnosis was made in 33 children, while in 7, ultrasonography did not contribute towards the diagnosis. The scope, advantages and pitfalls of ultrasonography are briefly discussed.

Computed Tomography for the Evaluation of Thoracic Masses in Children

Large chest masses in two young children were evaluated using thoracic computed tomography (CT). Air was identified within the mass four days before it was visible on the plain roentgenograms in one patient. Rapid injection of contrast material with CT scanning demonstrated that the pulmonary blood flow passed through the mass, instead of being displaced by it, in the other child. Thus, both lesions were identified as originating in the pulmonary parenchyma rather than in the mediastinum. (JAMA1981;246:65-67)

The role of sonography in evaluating right upper quadrant disease in children.

Since 1974, grey scale sonography has been used with increasing frequency in evaluating abdominal masses in children. Because sonography is noninvasive and does not involve ionizing radiation, it is of particular value in the evaluation of pediatric patients. This paper focuses on right upper quadrant masses in children. The liver and gallbladder have been easy to image sonographically. It should be noted that sonography cannot accurately differentiate between benign and malignant lesions. The pancreas, previously a difficult organ to appreciate radiographically, can be visualized with both ultrasound and computerized tomography. Both history and physical examination are important to the sonographic evaluation of masses in children.
