The 25th European Microwave Week (EuMW 2022) [Conference Report

The 25th European Microwave Week (EuMW 2022) took place fully in person in Milan, Italy, on 25–30 September 2022 at the new Milano Convention Center in the City Life District. Luca Perregrini was the general chair, Luciano Tarricone was the general cochair and treasurer, and Maurizio Bozzi was the TPC general chair, who, together with the entire steering committee ( <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 1</xref> ), dedicated more than a year putting together a full and engaging Microwave Week. The event was hosted at the Milano Convention Center in the heart of the City Life District, with an amazing view of the area, and it was strongly supported by a fantastic international group of young volunteers ( <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 2</xref> ) whose tireless activity and enthusiasm were fundamental for the success of EuMW 2022.

Compact hand-guided 3D scanning terahertz sensor platforms with 3D-printed aspherical telecentric f-θ lens

AbstractWe report on the development of a handheld three-dimensional (3D) terahertz scanning system with an aspherical telecentric 3D-printed f-θ lens using selective laser sintering. The lens covers a broader scan line of 50 mm with its larger aperture, compared to the 20 mm range in our initial work, which was presented at the European Microwave Week 2021. In order to evaluate the adaptability of the optomechanical components with different sensor units, two different integrated frequency-modulated continuous wave radar modules based on monolithic microwave integrated circuit technology, operating in W- and D-bands are tested within the measurement scheme. The optomechanical part consists of a galvanometer scanner mirror and the f-θ lens. The optical system enables B-scans perpendicular to the manual translational movement of the sensor unit by its user. An integrated guiding wheel system with rotary encoder makes it possible to correlate the measurement points to their respective locations, enabling complete 3D volumetric inspection of the corresponding structures, which is particularly useful for the inspection along cracks and welds.

A Technical Tribute to Peter Clarricoats [Historically Speaking

During European Microwave Week (EuMW2021), held in London in April 2022, there was a special session devoted to the achievements and impact of Prof. Peter J.B. Clarricoats, CBE, FRS, who passed in 2020. I was asked to contribute during the session. Here is my tribute in more detail.

Design of a miniature dual-band bandpass filter with interlocked stepped-impedance resonators for 5G new radio access technology

AbstractA miniature dual-band bandpass filter with interlocked stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs) is presented in this paper, which was designed for the student design competition held in European Microwave Week 2019. This bandpass filter is required to have two concurrent passbands, namely, the first passband at 900–1000 MHz and the second passband at 1427–1518 MHz bands, which cover six designated bands in sub-6 GHz range of fifth generation (5G) New Radio Access Technology. Three stopbands are required at 500–850, 1050–1350, and 1600–2000 MHz, respectively. To achieve the best figure of merit, an interlocked configuration of two SIRs is proposed. One advantage is that the impedance ratio of the inter-locked SIR can be controlled to have two passbands at the required frequencies. Second, the coupling section of the interlocked SIR gives three transmission zeros distributed to every stopbands such that the stopband suppression are dramatically enhanced. The measured results show that the passband insertion losses are 2.16 dB at the first passband and 1.33 dB at the second passband, and the return losses are greater than 10 dB. The stopband suppression at the transmission zeros are greater than 38 dB. The circuit is very compact as 41.40 × 19.96 mm2, equivalent to $0.25 \times 0.12\,\lambda _g^2$.

Quasi-elliptic dual-band bandpass filters based on series-cascaded multi-resonant cells

AbstractThis paper reports on quasi-elliptic dual-band bandpass filters (BPFs) that were designed for the Filter Student Design Competition of the 2019 European Microwave Week. The proposed lumped-element (LE) BPF concept is based on two dual-band transversal cells and one multi-resonant cell that allow the realization of symmetric and asymmetric dual-band transfer functions shaped by six poles and five transmission zeros. A compact implementation scheme based on LE series resonators is proposed for size compactness and wide spurious free out-of-band response. For proof-of-concept demonstration purposes, a dual-band LE prototype with two passbands centered 1 and 1.5 GHz was designed, manufactured, and measured. It exhibited the following radio frequency measured performance characteristics. Passbands centered at 1.02 and 1.45 GHz, minimum insertion loss levels of 2.0 and 2.7 dB, and bandwidth of 146 and 105 MHz, respectively, for the first and the second passband, and out-of-band rejection &gt;30 dB between 0 and 894 MHz, 1.17–1.34 GHz, and 1.72–6.9 GHz.

The EuMA and European Microwave Week: A Retrospective [Speakers' Corner

The organization of Microwave Engineering by professional institutions in Europe, in the second half of the 20th century

The purpose of this paper is twofold. It first describes how Microwaves were progressively organized by Professional Engineering Institutions in Europe in the years 1960–2000, essentially through individual efforts over many years. The first formal Microwave event organized in Europe was the European Microwave Conference in London, 1969, opening a series that continues as the European Microwave Week. It then shows that, over the same period of time, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), USA, which merged in 1963 with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, USA, to form the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), also became stronger in Europe. European IRE members developed the structure of the IRE in Western Europe, with a first Regional meeting in Geneva, 1962. The paper illustrates the development of both Microwave Engineering and IRE-IEEE in Europe in the period of time considered, thanks to the commitment of European individuals, some of whom have been active on both counts.

European Microwaves

Europe is a collection of individual countries speaking different languages but sharing a common cultural heritage. Each country has its own industries, research centers, and academic bodies. The integration of European countries has been pursued by the European Union (EU) with a number of initiatives in various areas, such as education, science, and technology. A major instrument in this direction has been the series of EU Framework Programmes (FPs), which identify strategic areas of research and development (R&D) and fund specific collaborative projects involving research centers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and large enterprises in Europe. A detailed description of the entirety of the initiatives is far outside the possibilities of this article, but it is available on the Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) Web site (http://cordis.europa. eu/home_en.html). A variety of parallel initiatives, both public and private, have also been launched. Among them, in the area of microwaves, it is worth mentioning the constitution in 1998 of the European Microwave Association (EuMA), as an international nonprofit association with the aim of developing education, training, and research activities in the area of microwave technology in Europe. The main activity of EuMA has been the launch of European Microwave Week (EuMW), established now as the most important microwave event in Europe and the second one in the world [1]. In 2008, an industrial-driven initiative for European microwaves was launched, the European Radio and Microwave Interest Group (EuRaMIG), with the purpose of making microwave and radio technology more visible and coordinated in the European research landscape.

Forty years of European microwaves. What about the future?

This paper describes some key points in the history and development of the European Microwave Conference, the European Microwave Week, and the European Microwave Association, starting from 1969. It captures the way in which the conference since the earliest days has sought to create a successful blend of scientific and industry interests and has adapted itself to and indeed shaped the many existing technical changes that have characterized and continue to be at the core of the field of microwave engineering.
