Ethnobotany of medicinal plant at Namorambe Village, Deli Serdang North Sumatra

The Ethnobotany of medicinal plants by the community of Namorambe Village, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency has been going on for generations. Namorambe is a village dominated by the Karo ethnic group. This study aims to determine the type, percentage of species, method of processing and use of medicinal plants. The research method was carried out by means of in-depth interviews with people who use medicinal plants. Sampling was done by purposive sampling of 42 respondents. There are 50 types of medicinal plants consisting of 29 families which are often used by the people of Namorambe Village. The types of medicinal plants most widely used by the community are from the family Zingiberaceae (8 species), Solanaceae (4 species), Myrtacea (3 species), Euphorbiaceae (3 species). The families Arecaceae, Laminaceae, Malvaceae, Piperaceae, Poaceae, and Rutaceae each with 2 species, and the other families each with 1 species. The results of this research can become a data base for potential medicinal plants that can be developed in a sustainable manner.

Ethnobotany of Medicinal Plants in the Wasilomata Cluster Community, Mawasangka District, Central Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province

Ethnobotany is a botanical science that studies the use of plants in everyday life which are used by certain ethnicities or tribes, and are passed down from generation to generation. The aim of this research is to determine the types and parts of medicinal plants used as well as how to process and utilize medicinal plants in the Wasilomata grove community, Mawasangka District, Central Buotn Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province. This research is a qualitative descriptive research using several methods, namely observation, interviews, documentation, plant identification. The interview method was carried out using purposive sampling technique. The subjects in this research were youth leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders and healers. The results of the interview stated that there are 50 types of medicinal plants that are often used in the Wasilomata Grove. The parts of plants used as medicine are leaves, stems, fruit, roots, rhizomes, seeds and tubers. The way to process plants as medicine is boiling, pounding, squeezing, grating and splitting. Meanwhile, its users can treat 19 diseases, namely external wounds, high blood pressure, fever, cholesterol, coughs, boils, malaria, diarrhea, eye pain, serampa, burns, itching, toothache, poisoning, kidney stones, gout, acne, rheumatism and diabetes. It was concluded that there are 50 species of medicinal plants. The part of the plant most widely used as medicine is the leaves (70%). The most widely used method of processing plants as medicine is by boiling (46%) and the use of plants that are mostly used to treat external wounds (20%).

Ethnobotany of Medicinal Plants from the Malay People in Tanjung Village, Bunguran District, Northeastern District of Natuna Regency

The use of plants in traditional medicine has been used out by people in the Kepulauan Riau. However, knowledge about the use of plants in traditional medicine by the Malay people in Tanjung Village, Northeast Bunguran District, Natuna Regency, has never been documented. The aim of this study is to identify the species of plants and plant parts that are used, to learn how to prepare and use medicinal plants, and to evaluate the importance of citation frequency and informant agreement elements in Tanjung village’s traditional medicine. The research was carried out by conducting semi-structured interviews, and continued with a discussion of 13 respondents who were determined by snowball sampling. The data collected includes: the plant species and families, the component used, the processing method, the usage method, and useg. Also, the informant agreement factor and the frequency of citations/mentions of each medicinal plant (%) were determined. The results showed that the people in Tanjung Village used 72 species of plants in traditional medicine. Fabaceae and Zingiberaceae are the dominant plant families reported by respondents as medicinal plants. Generally, the people in Tanjung Village use more of the leaves (46.67%) for use as medicine, the processing method is by boiling (33.3%) and the method of use is by drinking it (58.2%).

Ethnobotany study of potential and utilization of medicinal plants by local communities in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatera

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants is a botanical science that studies using plants as drugs to treat a disease. This study aimed to determine the types of plants, processing methods, usage methods, and the use value (UV) of plants used as medicine by local people in Kayuara Sakti Village. The research method used is descriptive exploratory. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The research sample consisted of 49 people in Kayuara Sakti Village. They are collecting data using interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis in this study is qualitative and quantitative. The results of this study obtained the following data: (1) The types of medicinal plants used by local communities in Kayuara Sakti Village are 100 species belonging to 50 families. Diseases that are often treated are diseases that are commonly suffered by the community. (2) The method of processing medicinal plants is by boiling (44%), pounding/mashing (14), grated and squeezing (13%), brewing (7%), cooking and splitting (5%), without processing (4%), kneaded (3%), burned (2%), soaked, rolled, crushed, roasted and withered (1%). (3) The way to use medicinal plants is by drinking (57%), eating (16%), smearing (10%), dripping (3%), plugging and bathing (2%), and gargling, chewing, and rubbed (1%). (4) Use value (UV) medicinal plants used by the community are 0,02-0,81. The species with the highest value is turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.).

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants in the Dayak Linoh Tribe in Sintang District, Indonesia

The Linoh Dayak people have long used medicinal plants to deal with health problems in their community. However, along with the advancement of science, the influx of foreign cultures and the degradation of nature and the environment, traditional knowledge about medicinal plants is only owned by the older generation, and the transmission of information is limited by word of mouth and not well documented. This study aimed to document various medicinal plants used by the Dayak Linoh people. The research used a qualitative approach using field surveys. Informants were selected using the purposive sampling method. The informants interviewed consisted of customary leaders (key informants), village heads (main informants), and recommended informants, such as traditional birth attendants (village midwives), hamlet heads, and community members who know medicinal plants. Medicinal plant data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation related to the local names of the plants, the parts used, and how to manage and use them. Data analysis was carried out in a qualitative descriptive manner. The results showed that 55 species of medicinal plants consisting of 34 plant families were used by the Dayak Linoh tribe. The most widely used part of the plant is the leaf (39, 71%). People in the community boiled the leaves and drank the extract. The most used families in the three tribal communities of the Dayak Linoh tribe, were Zingiberaceae (9 species) and Myrtaceae (3 species). The plant parts used by the Dayak Linoh tribe were root, tuber, rhizome, stem, bark, banana heart, fruit, fruit skin, leaf, and seed. The Dayak Linoh tribe used medicinal plants to treat boil (7 plants) and for postpartum stamina recovery (7 plants). The communities processed and used the medicinal herbs conventionally by boiling and drinking.

Ethnobotany of the Medicinal Plants: Case of Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Yarsagumba) and Its Benefits for Nepal, India, and Bhutan

Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Yarsagumba) is complex combination of fungus and dead caterpillar having high medicinal and economic value. From the ancient time, it is being used as traditional medicine in countries like Nepal and India. It naturally grows in the Himalayan alpine pastures of Nepal, India and Bhutan. However, there are limited literatures which explores the people’s interaction with the medicinal plants. This study focuses on availability and usage of Yarsagumba in Nepal, India and Bhutan. For this, systematic literature review was conducted to gather information from online resources using different keywords. Ophiocordyceps sinensis is largely used for brain and body nourishment to improve the immune system and used as a renoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-metastatic, and neuroprotective agent. Despite of major opportunity, India, Nepal, and Bhutan have been only contributing 1.6, 1.4, and 0.5%, respectively of the total annual production of Ophiocordyceps sinensis. This paper has explored details on the ethnobotany and use of medicinal plants in the context of Nepal, India, and Bhutan. Apart from this, the production, benefits, and usage of Ophiocordyceps sinensis have also been discussed in this paper.

Ethnobotany of Medicinal Plants Used by Kathariya (Tharu) Community in Kailali District, Nepal

This study aims to document the traditional knowledge on medicinal use of plants by Kathariya (Tharu) community in Kailali district. Kathariya is one of the sub-group of the Tharu community whose culture and language is slightly different from other sub-groups. Traditional healers Guruwa of Kathariya community from five study sites viz. Sisaiya, Tappa, Udasipur, Pawera and Joshipur of Kailali were identified as key informants. Exploratory research design was adopted and interview method was used to collect the primary information through Semi-structured open-ended questionnaire. Altogether 70 species of plants used for medicinal purposes were documented. Sixteen species were found useful in cuts, wounds and swelling which is one of ten health issues categorized in the present study. Thirteen and Twelve species were recorded to be used in abdominal disorders and skin diseases respectively. The community usually mixes powder in measurement of two and half grains of each Barley and Black Pepper during preparations of medicine for oral route of consumption. Based on habit, highest number of plant species belongs to herbs (30 species). Among five study sites, highest number of species was recorded in Udasipur with 35 species. Regarding the parts of plant used, roots and leaves were found to be used often equally, which were represented by 24 species each. Achyranthes aspera, Euphorbia hirta, Azadirachta indica and Clerodendrom infortunatum were the most frequently used species. This study generated preliminary but crucial information which may open the avenue for utilization of biological resources. Further research leading to bio-prospecting is needed to utilize these resources.

Ethnobotany of Medicinal Plants used by the Populations of the Plateaux Department (Republic of Congo)

This study was carried out in the Plateaux Department. It consisted in improving the knowledge of the use of medicinal plants by the populations of the said Department. A series of ethnobotanical surveys were conducted using a questionnaire and 300 informants were interviewed. The results show that 98 medicinal species divided into 84 genera and 56 families were inventoried. Rubiaceae (8.91%) followed by Asteraceae (7.80%), Fabaceae (7.05%) and Zingiberaceae (4%) are the most representative families. Among these species, spontaneous species are widely used. Leaves (46.53%) followed by barks (13.56%) and roots (13.32%) are the most commonly used parts and decoction (47.79%) is the most common method of preparation. Concerning the diseases treated, malaria (16.39%), stomach ache (8.47%), cough (8.44%), fever (6.57%), haemorrhoids (6.31%) and diarrhoea (5.80%) are the most treated diseases. Nauclea latifolia Sm., Morinda morindoides (Baker) Milne-Redh, Mangifera indica L., Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & H. Rob. are the plants most involved in the constitution of the recipes. This study will allow the establishment of a Congolese pharmacopoeia in the future and will constitute a source of information for scientific research in the fields of phytochemistry and pharmacology.

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants used by the Yao people in Gongcheng County, Guangxi, China

BackgroundGongcheng Yao Autonomous County (Gongcheng) is typical for the Yao people in northeastern Guangxi, southern China. The Yao people have a long history of using medicinal plants. In this study, we used ethnobotanical methods to collect traditional knowledge regarding herbal medicines in Gongcheng. Our study provides fundamental data for developing and applying local ethnic medicines and their protection.MethodsEthnobotanical data were collected from 103 villages in nine townships from 2014 to 2018 in Gongcheng. A total of 352 informants (279 male and 73 female) were interviewed through semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews, and guided field walks. All the informants were local inhabitants aged between 28 and 101 years of age, of which 40 key informants were selected based on the recommendations of knowledgeable elders and local medical institutions. The informant consensus factor (ICF) was used to evaluate the degree and importance of differences in medicinal plant species and calculated the relative frequencies of citation (RFC) for the recorded medicinal plants.ResultsData from 352 local healers were collected for the study. The Guanyin and Sanjiang townships had the highest distribution of per capita healers (Pch), while the Gongcheng, Lianhua, and Ping'an townships were relatively lower. Of the 352 local healers, more than half were older than 60 years of age and therefore faced the problem of suitable successors and potential loss of traditional medicinal knowledge. There are 12 types of diseases treated by local healers in the study area, and most of the types had a high ICF value. The highest ICF (0.80) was reported for digestive system disease, followed by urinary system disease (0.78) and nervous system disease (0.77). Traumatic injury and orthopedics, digestive system, and rheumatic disease are the most common ailments. The RFC value calculated in 33 medicinal plant species (with an FC of more than 5) ranged from 0.024 to 0.056. The higher RFC values included Kadsura longipedunculata, Schefflera heptaphylla, Plantago asiatica, etc. The most commonly used medicinal method was decoction; plasters, creams, and some form of moxibustion and cupping skills were locally practiced, but only rarely. The local healers used 306 medicinal plant species (116 families and 255 genera). Herbal plants were most commonly used among these, with whole plants and roots being favored.ConclusionThe Yao people are highly skilled at using medicinal plants to treat various diseases in Gongcheng. Their treatment methods are varied, convenient, and efficient. Due to the impact of urbanization and economic development, knowledge of traditional medicine is under threat, with declining numbers of local healers and a lack of suitable successors. In order to protect and inherit Yao's traditional medicinal knowledge, it is necessary to educate young healers and to protect biodiversity.

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants from Lampung Tribe around Way Kambas National Park, Indonesia

The local communities of the Lampung Tribe around Way Kambas National Park (TNWK), Lampung, Indonesia, utilize forest resources through local community knowledge. However, cultural modernization is the potential to lead to the erosion of people's traditional knowledge. Therefore, this study is essential to be conducted. This study aimed to inventory medicinal plant species and describe local communities' knowledge of the use of medicinal plants. Semi-structured interviews and observations collected ethnobotanical data. The results were presented in a table and diagram and then analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that as many as 69 species of medicinal plants belonging to 39 families were used by the local community of the Lampung Tribe around the TNWK area. Zingiberaceae was the family with the highest number of species. Leaves were the plant part that was mostly used by the local community. Boiling was the most widely used mode of preparation. The Lampung Tribe uses plants to treat various diseases grouped into external and internal diseases. The local community frequently experiences external diseases.

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants in the dayak limbai tribe

The use of medicinal plants by the Dayak Limbai tribe has been going on for a long time, it's just that knowledge related to the use of plants as medicinal ingredients has not been well documented. The aims of this study are 1) to identify plant species that have the potential as medicinal ingredients; 2) describe the part of the medicinal plant used; 3) describe how to use plants as medicine by the Dayak Limbai people. This research was conducted with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collected consisted of the diversity of medicinal plants (local names of medicinal plants, scientific names of medicinal plants, medicinal plant families, parts used, and their utilization). Data collection using structured interview sheets. Data analysis using content analysis. The results obtained as many as 82 types of plants used to treat 64 types of diseases. The most widely used plant species by the Dayak Limbai people are from the Zingiberaceae family.

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants and traditional rituals community of Sembalun Village, East Lombok

The used of plant species by the community is an inseparable unit in everyday life. The plants used by the community in Sembalun Village for medicines and traditional rituals has been attached and is a hereditary tradition. Community knowledge about the use of plants for medicines and traditional rituals has not been well documented. The purpose of this study was to determine the species of medicinal plants and traditional rituals, as well as to find out the parts of plants used by the community in Sembalun Village. This type of research is descriptive qualitative through direct observation and interviews were conducted on 33 respondents using descriptive methods and purposive sampling observation techniques. The results showed that 58 species of medicinal plants from 30 families and 5 species of plants for traditional rituals from 5 families were used by the people of Sembalun Village. These medicinal plant species are believed to cure 28 types of diseases and are used in the traditional rituals of Sembe, Ngeayu-ayu, Bebije Tawar, and the use of Soyot (Sapindus rarak) in washing traditional Bale Lokak clothes. The most widely used plant parts were leaves as many as 21 species and the least used were seeds and flowers as many as 1 plant species.

A Systematic Review on Traditional Medicinal Plants Used for the Treatment of Viral and Fungal Infections in Ethiopia.

BackgroundTraditional medicine is still playing an important role in meeting the basic health care requirement of the peoples in different parts of Ethiopia. There is no published review that clearly indicates documented medicinal plants available in different parts of the country used for treating viral and fungal infections. Currently, viral epidemics with high mortality and morbidity like SARS COV-2 are emerging. Screening of promising drug from plant source is vital to control such viral and fungal infections. In addition, indicating the most commonly used parts of the plant and their route of administration will help for further drug formulation studies. This review aimed to present an indication of the ethnomedicinal plants used for the treatment of fungal and viral infections.MethodsThe databases (Google Scholar, pub med, hinari, and research gate) were searched for published articles on the ethnobotany of medicinal plants used to treat viral and fungal infection in Ethiopia without restriction in the methodology and year of publication. Viral infections, fungal infections, anti-fungal and anti-viral activity, ethnobotany, Ethiopia, and medicinal plants were the key search terms. Studies that did not have complete ethnobotanical data and did not address viral and fungal infection as a disease treated traditionally by the practitioners were excluded.ResultsA total of 249 articles were produced by database search. After amendment for exclusion criteria and duplicates, 15 articles were found appropriate for the review. The majority of the studies were qualitative and others were mixed type in nature. All of the medicinal plants traditionally used to treat viral and fungal infections in Ethiopia were not scientifically confirmed. Out of the 95 identified plants, 40.8% were herbs and from the plant parts used and 43.9% and 21.1% were leaves and roots, respectively. The majority, (48.8%), of the plant remedies were given orally. Rabies and Tinea capitis constitute the highest percentage of viral and fungal infections treated by traditional medicinal plants followed by hepatitis and Tinea corporis, respectively.ConclusionVarious plants have been used to treat viral and fungal infections. Information obtained from this review serves as a guide to discover novel antiviral and antifungal agents from plants. Therefore, it is advisable for field researchers to properly identify, document, conserve and conduct efficacy and safety studies on such medicinal plants in animal models.

ABSTRACTResearch is a ethnobotany of medicinal plants in Barene Village, Central Malaka District, Malacca Regency which aims to find out what types of plants are utilized by the people of Barene Village, what plant organs are used in medicine, how to process these plants for traditional medicine and the benefits of medicinal plants. Sampling was conducted in Barene Village, Central Malaka District, Malacca District. This type of research is a descriptive study with a sampling technique approach conducted by purposive sampling. Data collection methods used are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data from the results of subsequent studies were analyzed descriptively qualitatively according to the purpose of the study which would later be presented in the form of tables, photographs or images. The results showed that in Barene Village there were 20 types of plants that were used by the community as traditional medicine. Plant organ parts used in medicine are leaves, leaf buds, roots, bark, rhizomes, leaves and bark. How to process these plants in traditional medicine that is boiled, chewed, eaten, pounded, and soaked. The people of Barene Village use the ingredients more often by boiling and then drinking. The part that is most used by the people of Barene Village as a treatment for the use of leaves. The Kerinci tribe is a traditional community that has long had close interactions with the living natural resources and its ecosystem. The lempur region is the oldest area in kerinci which is inhabited by native Kerinci tribes. Research on ethnobotany of medicinal plants in this region is still very small because there are still a number of villages that have not yet been explored and documented. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study to obtain data and information on the ethnobotany of medicinal plants in this region. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity of medicinal plant species and how to use the Zingiberaceae medicinal plant by the Kerinci tribe in the Lempur region. The research method was carried out using descriptive method through field observations and interviews. Based on the research that has been done, there are 5 types of medicinal plants Solanaceae. The benefits of this plant can treat diseases such as, sore eyes, blood booster disease, hypertension, asthma, and stomach ache.

A review on traditionally used medicinal plants for scabies therapy in Ethiopia

Scabies is a neglected tropical disease that contributes greatly to global morbidity and mortality and it is responsible for a wide range of infections including impetigo, abscesses and cellulitis that can lead to serious complications such as septicemia, kidney disease and rheumatic heart disease. Scabies remains one of the commonest of skin diseases seen in developing countries. Although its distribution is subject to a cycle of infection, with peaks and troughs of disease prevalence, this periodicity is often less obvious in poor communities. The objective of this review was to collect available data about the therapy of scabies using medicinal plant so far studied by ethno botanical surveys in Ethiopia and gives comprehensive information on the name of plants, method of preparation, route of administration and plant part used. The Data was collected using the keywords “Traditional used medicinal plants for scabies therapy in Ethiopia” in searching the major databases including Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, BioMed Central, PubMed and Springer link documenting published studies done on ethno botany of medicinal plants used in Ethiopia. Ethinobotanical data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and expressed in pie charts. The Review conducted 52 medicinal plants (39 families) recorded to treat scabies in Ethiopia. Parts of medicinal plants used analysis indicates leaves occupy the highest proportion (57%), followed by roots (12%) and others. Although Phytolacca dodecandra L’Herit was the most popular medicinal plant used for the treatment of scabies with the frequency of report six time (29%).

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants with antimalarial potential in Northern Nigeria

Background : Traditional medicinal plants with potentials have contributed significantly in the history and evolution of modern health care system. Plants with medicinal value remain the only way forward as they are gaining more acceptability and recognition all over the world. Resistance of the malarial parasite all over the world has initiated the need for the exploration of plant parts for the invention of promising antimalarial drugs. In order to achieve this, a prior knowledge of the medicinal plants is needed from the traditional medical practitioners and any other person utilizing plants for medicinal purposes. Methods : The study was carried out through the administration of open-ended questionnaires to the age group of 30 and above. No prior appointment was made to the informants. A total of 100 informants were interviewed. Results : This study revealed 21species of medicinal plants. Malvaceae family have the highest abundance. Only plants with 0.5 relative frequency of citation and above were also listed. Leaves accounted for 35% of the most utilized parts, while decoction and oral were the most utilized methods of preparation and utilization at 44% and 60% respectively. Scientific validation of the documented medicinal plants is paramount in order to confirm, identify and isolate the compound responsible for antimalarial activity. Conclusion : Findings from this study will help in the production of new anti-malaria drugs, development of herbal product for malaria treatments and conservation of the medicinal plants with malarial therapeutic value to avoid future oversampling.
