Retrieving hourly aerosol optical depth for geostationary satellite FY-4B/AGRI by surface-related dynamic spectral reflectance ratio method

The Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) on board Fengyun-4B (FY-4B) has been found to have significant advantages in aerosol dynamic monitoring. This study proposed a surface-related dynamic spectral reflectance ratio (SDSRR) method for FY-4B AGRI to solve the problem of inaccurate surface reflectance estimation in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrieval. This method introduced Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol product to assist in calculating the surface reflectance of the AGRI blue channel and the spectral reflectance ratio between the shortwave infrared (SWIR) channel and the blue channel, then constructed a surface-related dynamic spectral reflectance ratio series by combining the spectral reflectance ratio, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Scattering Angle (SCA) to obtain aerosol retrieval results. To verify the accuracy of the SDSRR method, the AOD dataset of the SDSRR method, the official aerosol products of AGRI (LDA) and Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) AOD datasets were compared with the ground-based observations of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Sun-shy radiometer Observation Network (SONET) in East Asia. The results indicate that the SDSRR method performs more consistently in East Asia compared to the official ARGI aerosol products. The root-mean-square-error (RMSE), mean error (ME), and correlation coefficient (R) between SDSRR AOD and ground-based measurements are 0.286, 0.180 and 0.70, which is better than that of LDA AOD (RMSE = 0.508, ME = 0.292, R = 0.69). Additionally, the RMSE, ME, and R of AHI AOD were 0.253, 0.168, and 0.74, respectively.

Separating Surface Reflectance from Volume Reflectance in Medical Hyperspectral Imaging.

Hyperspectral imaging has shown great promise for diagnostic applications, particularly in cancer surgery. However, non-bulk tissue-related spectral variations complicate the data analysis. Common techniques, such as standard normal variate normalization, often lead to a loss of amplitude and scattering information. This study investigates a novel approach to address these spectral variations in hyperspectral images of optical phantoms and excised human breast tissue. Our method separates surface and volume reflectance, hypothesizing that spectral variability arises from significant variations in surface reflectance across pixels. An illumination setup was developed to measure samples with a hyperspectral camera from different axial positions but with identical zenith angles. This configuration, combined with a novel data analysis approach, allows for the estimation and separation of surface reflectance for each direction and volume reflectance across all directions. Validated with optical phantoms, our method achieved an 83% reduction in spectral variability. Its functionality was further demonstrated in excised human breast tissue. Our method effectively addresses variations caused by surface reflectance or glare while conserving surface reflectance information, which may enhance sample analysis and evaluation. It benefits samples with unknown refractive index spectra and can be easily adapted and applied across a wide range of fields where hyperspectral imaging is used.

First atmospheric aerosol-monitoring results from the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) over Asia

Abstract. Aerosol optical properties have been provided by the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), the world's first geostationary-Earth-orbit (GEO) satellite instrument designed for air quality monitoring. This study describes improvements made to the GEMS aerosol retrieval (AERAOD) algorithm, including spectral binning, surface reflectance estimation, cloud masking, and post-processing, along with validation results. These enhancements aim to provide more accurate and reliable aerosol-monitoring results for Asia. The adoption of spectral binning in the lookup table (LUT) approach reduces random errors and enhances the stability of satellite measurements. In addition, we introduced a new high-resolution database for surface reflectance estimation based on the minimum-reflectance method, which was adapted to the GEMS pixel resolution. Monthly background aerosol optical depth (BAOD) values were used to estimate hourly GEMS surface reflectance consistently. Advanced cloud-removal techniques have been implemented to significantly improve the effectiveness of cloud detection and enhance aerosol retrieval quality. An innovative post-processing correction method based on machine learning has been introduced to address artificial diurnal biases in aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations. In this study, we investigated selected aerosol events, highlighting the capability of GEMS in monitoring and providing insights into hourly aerosol optical properties during various atmospheric events. The performance of the GEMS AERAOD products was validated against the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) data for the period from November 2021 to October 2022. GEMS AOD at 443 nm demonstrated a strong correlation with AERONET AOD at 443 nm (R = 0.792). However, it exhibited biased patterns, including the underestimation of high AOD values and overestimation of low-AOD conditions. Different aerosol types (highly absorbing fine aerosols, dust aerosols, and non-absorbing aerosols) exhibited distinct validation results. The retrievals of GEMS single-scattering albedo (SSA) at 443 nm agreed well with the AERONET SSA at 440 nm within reasonable error ranges, with variations observed among aerosol types. For GEMS AOD at 443 nm exceeding 0.4 (1.0), 42.76 % (56.61 %) and 67.25 % (85.70 %) of GEMS SSA data points fell within the ±0.03 and ±0.05 error bounds, respectively. Model-enforced post-processing correction improved GEMS AOD and SSA performance, thereby reducing the diurnal variation in the biases. The validation of the retrievals of GEMS aerosol layer height (ALH) against the CALIOP data demonstrates good agreement, with a mean bias of −0.225 km and 55.29 % (71.70 %) of data points falling within ±1 km (1.5 km).

Retrieval of high-resolution aerosol optical depth (AOD) using Landsat 8 imageries over different LULC classes over a city along Indo-Gangetic Plain, India.

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) serves as a crucial indicator for assessing regional air quality. To address regional and urban pollution issues, there is a requirement for high-resolution AOD products, as the existing data is of very coarse resolution. To address this issue, we retrieved high-resolution AOD over Kanpur (26.4499°N, 80.3319°E), located in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) region using Landsat 8 imageries and implemented the algorithm SEMARA, which combines SARA (Simplified Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm) and SREM (Simplified and Robust Surface Reflectance Estimation). Our approach leveraged the green band of the Landsat 8, resulting in an impressive spatial resolution of 30m of AOD and rigorously validated with available AERONET observations. The retrieved AOD is in good agreement with high correlation coefficients (r) of 0.997, a low root mean squared error of 0.035, and root mean bias of - 4.91%. We evaluated the retrieved AOD with downscaled MODIS (MCD19A2) AOD products across various land classes for cropped and harvested period of agriculture cycle over the study region. It is noticed that over the built-up region of Kanpur, the SEMARA algorithm exhibits a stronger correlation with the MODIS AOD product compared to vegetation, barren areas and water bodies. The SEMARA approach proved to be more effective for AOD retrieval over the barren and built-up land categories for harvested period compared with the cropping period. This study offers a first comparative examination of SEMARA-retrieved high-resolution AOD and MODIS AOD product over a station of IGP.

Global evaluation of Fengyun-3 MERSI dark target aerosol retrievals over land

ABSTRACT The Medium Resolution Spectral Image (MERSI) is a MODIS-like sensor aboard Fengyun-3 satellite. The first version of MERSI aerosol algorithm has been developed based on MODIS dark target (DT) algorithm, with modified models for estimating surface reflectance and an adjusted inland water masking method to release haze aerosols. This study applies MERSI DT algorithm to the global observations from the upgraded MERSI sensor (MERSI-II) on Fengyun-3D. And then, the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) results from the year of 2019–2020 are validated against the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. In addition, analyses of the spatial distribution and error characteristics of MODIS and MERSI-II retrievals are presented. The overall validation demonstrates that MERSI-II retrievals perform well globally, with a correlation coefficient of 0.877 and 67.1% of matchups within the Expected Error envelope of ± (0.05 + 0.2τ), which are close to the statistic metrics of MODIS products. In addition, MERSI-II and MODIS AODs exhibit similar error trends and error dependence. Moreover, the similar global distribution characteristics of the two AODs are revealed in the retrieval performance at site and regional scales, as well as in the analysis of monthly averages. These findings indicate the success of the ported MERSI algorithm.

Estimation of Water Surface Reflectance and Total Suspended Solid Using MODIS Images for a Reservoir in the Brazilian Semiarid Region

Reservoirs are essential sources to ensure water supply, especially in regions with a semiarid climate, prone to prolonged drought periods and water scarcity. An exemplary case is the semiarid region of Paraíba State, Brazil. Monitoring of water surface reflectance (WSR) and total suspended solids (TSS) is indispensable to address issues such as erosion, sediment transport, depo sition, reservoir siltation, water pollution, and associated human health risks, ultimately aiding in water resources management. This study introduced a novel approach to estimating the spatiotemporal dynamics of WSR and TSS, utilizing automated methods and MODIS images over 17 years (2000 ~ 2016) for the Epitácio Pessoa Reservoir. Three models, (a) model 1 (M1), (b) model 2 (M2), and (c) model 3 (M3), were employed to estimate WSR and TSS, chosen for their replicability, mathematical simplicity, and ecosystem similarity. A total of 775 images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra satellite, along with observed data, were used for the estimation. Model M3 yielded the best performance for estimating TSS, with values ranging from 270 ~ 961 mg/L (r = 0.57). Furthermore, a strong correlation (r > 0.93) was observed between the mean reflectance values for pixels sampled using two distinct extraction procedures (longitudinal profile and specific sampling points). This strong correlation underscores the potential utility of MODIS images for effective monitoring of WSR and TSS in comparatively smaller bodies of water in the Brazilian semiarid region. Importantly, this study represents one of the first applications for estimating WSR and TSS for a reservoir situated in a semiarid climate region. The estimates of WSR and TSS could hold significant implications for environmental monitoring and water management of such reservoirs. In conclusion, automated estimation of WSR and TSS could serve as a valuable tool for decision-makers in predicting silting, sediment yield, and reservoir water quality.

An intercomparison of SEMARA high-resolution AOD and MODIS operational AODs

SEMARA is a high-resolution aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm that incorporates two algorithms, Simplified and Robust Surface Reflectance Estimation Method (SREM) for estimating surface reflectance and the Simplified Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm (SARA) for retrieving AOD. This study used SEMARA approach for retrieving AOD utilizing data obtained from Aqua-MODIS in the green channel. The algorithm had good agreement with AERONET data (R = 0.98). Also it was analyzed over a wide area containing five provinces in Iran. SEMARA AOD retrievals were compared with the operational MODIS aerosol retrieval algorithms, including Dark Target (DT), Deep Blue (DB), and Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) AOD retrievals over different land covers and low to high aerosol loadings. The results show high consistency in SEMARA AOD retrievals with MAIAC AOD retrievals, with an average correlation coefficient of 0.61, while the correlation coefficient with DB and DT was 0.50 and 0.29, respectively. During high AOD loadings and over bright surfaces, the best agreement of SEMARA AOD and DT, DB, and MAIAC AOD was achieved with correlation coefficients of 0.52, 0.75, and 0.80, respectively. SEMARA AOD shows the best spatial coverage, averaging 80%, while MAIAC, DB, and DT had 54%, 32%, and 12% spatial coverage, respectively. This study concluded that SEMARA AOD can retrieve AOD over various land covers and during low to high AOD loadings with acceptable results.

Implementing a Dual-Spectrometer Approach for Improved Surface Reflectance Estimation

Surface reflectance measurement is an integral part of the vicarious calibration of satellite sensors and the validation of satellite-derived top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and surface reflectance products. A well-known practice for estimating surface reflectance is to conduct a field campaign with a spectrometer and a calibration panel, which is labor-intensive and expensive. To address this issue, the Radiometric Calibration Network, RadCalNet, has been developed, which automatically collects surface reflectance over several selected sites. Neither of these approaches can continuously track the atmosphere, which limits their ability to compensate for atmospheric transmittance change during target measurement. This paper presents the dual-spectrometer approach that uses a stationary spectrometer dedicated to continuously tracking changes in atmospheric transmittance by staring at a calibrated reference panel while the mobile spectrometer measures the target. Simultaneous measurement of the reflectance panel and target help to transfer calibration from the stationary spectrometer to the mobile spectrometer and synchronize the measurements. In this manner, atmospheric transmittance changes during target measurement can be tracked and used to reduce the variability of the target surface reflectance. This paper uses field measurement data from combined field campaigns between different calibration groups at Brookings, South Dakota, and Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 underfly efforts over Coconino National Forest, Arizona, and Guymon, Oklahoma. Preliminary results show that even in a clear sky condition, where atmospheric transmittance changes are minimal, the precision of target surface reflectance estimated using the dual-spectrometer approach is 2–6% better than the single-spectrometer approach. The dual-spectrometer approach shows the potential for a substantial improvement in the precision of the target spectral profile when the atmospheric transmittance is changing rapidly during field measurement. Results show that during non-optimal atmospheric conditions, the dual-spectrometer approach improved the precision of the surface reflectance by 50–60% compared to the single-spectrometer approach across most spectral regions. The ability to estimate surface reflectance more precisely using the dual-spectrometer approach in different atmospheric conditions improves the vicarious calibration of optical satellite sensors and the validation of both TOA and surface reflectance products.

GOCI-II geostationary satellite hourly aerosol optical depth obtained by data-driven methods: Validation and comparison

The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager II (GOCI-II) deployed on board GEO-KOMPSAT 2B (GK2B) satellite can observe the earth with high frequency, which is of great significance to the dynamic monitoring of regional aerosol optical depth (AOD). However, the lack of short-wave infrared bands makes the classical methods based on radiative transfer analysis difficult to achieve retrieval of aerosols. The data-driven methods based on learning from massive samples can achieve high-accuracy retrieval of aerosols on the local, regional and global scale. However, the samples required for the data-driven method are difficult to obtain due to the short operation time of the GK2B satellite and insufficient ground-based measurements. Aiming to solve such a problem, the Simplified and Robust Surface Reflectance Estimation and Simplified Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm (SEMARA) were aggregated to be applied in the study. The SEMARA method using ground-based observation can retrieve local AOD with high reliability and accuracy, which can be used to construct high-quality and high-quantity samples for training with higher efficiency compared with traditional sample construct methods. Four data-driven methods: Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), were chosen to retrieve the AOD over South Korea in 2021 and 2022 based on GOCI-II. The results were validated and compared using ground-based measurements from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AENRONET) sites and show that the FCNN method has high accuracy and stability, followed by, the RF and XGBoost methods, while the SVM results significantly overestimate the spatial distribution of the AOD.

Choice of Solar Spectral Irradiance Model for Current and Future Remote Sensing Satellite Missions

The accuracy of surface reflectance estimation for satellite sensors using radiance-based calibrations can depend significantly on the choice of solar spectral irradiance (or solar spectrum) model used for atmospheric correction. Selecting an accurate solar spectrum model is also important for radiance-based sensor calibration and estimation of atmospheric parameters from irradiance observations. Previous research showed that Landsat 8 could be used to evaluate the quality of solar spectrum models. This paper applies the analysis using five previously evaluated and three more recent solar spectrum models using both Landsat 8 (OLI) and Landsat 9 (OLI2). The study was further extended down to 10 nm resolution and a wavelength range from Ultraviolet A (UVA) to shortwave infrared (SWIR) (370–2480 nm) using inversion of field irradiance measurements. The results using OLI and OLI2 as well as the inversion of irradiance measurements were that the more recent Chance and Kurucz (SA2010), Meftah (SOLAR-ISS) and Coddington (TSIS-1) models performed better than all of the previous models. The results were illustrated by simulating dark and bright surface reflectance signatures obtained by atmospheric correction with the different solar spectrum models. The results showed that if the SA2010 model is assumed to be the “true” solar irradiance, using the TSIS-1 or the SOLAR-ISS model will not significantly change the estimated ground reflectance. The other models differ (some to a large extent) in varying wavelength areas.

Evaluation of surface reflectance retrieval over diverse surface types using SREM algorithm in varied aerosol conditions for coarse to medium resolution data from multiple spaceborne sensors

ABSTRACT Surface reflectance (SR) is one of the most important components for deriving different biophysical parameters from remotely sensed data. For accurate retrieval of SR, it is essential to accurately estimate the degree of atmospheric alteration to the target signals reaching at-sensor. Simplified and robust SR estimation method (SREM) is one such approximate estimation method that could demonstrate the retrieval of SR from top-of-atmosphere (ToA) signals, without using any precalculated LUTs or aerosol information. The present study attempts to assess the accuracy of the SREM algorithm over varied Indian land surfaces using data from Landsat 8, Sentinel 2, AWiFS and LISS III. The results indicate that while SREM performs quite well for Sentinel 2 over most land surface types, the performance is good for Landsat 8 as well except over water and in coastal aerosol band. SREM retrievals also show high correlation for AWiFS and LISS III but the estimated values are much lower than level 2 SR due to smaller ToA reflectance values. Furthermore, while aerosol load does impact the performance adversely, it is least impactful for Sentinel 2 and LISS III datasets and most over Landsat 8, particularly over water. Additionally, while AWiFS and LISS III SR retrievals are underestimated at all spectral bands, retrieval is slightly underestimated from green to SWIR band in case of Sentinel 2 and SWIR band in case of Landsat 8. Overall, the findings demonstrate that while SREM will need to be modified to adapt to LISS III and AWiFS retrievals, it can, nevertheless, be readily used as a simplified method for quick and approximate estimation of SR over the Indian region using data from Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2.

An intrinsic image network evaluated as a model of human lightness perception

Lightness perception is a long-standing topic in research on human vision, but very few image-computable models of lightness have been formulated. Recent work in computer vision has used artifical neural networks and deep learning to estimate surface reflectance and other intrinsic image properties. Here we investigate whether such networks are useful as models of human lightness perception. We train a standard deep learning architecture on a novel image set that consists of simple geometric objects with a few different surface reflectance patterns. We find that the model performs well on this image set, generalizes well across small variations, and outperforms three other computational models. The network has partial lightness constancy, much like human observers, in that illumination changes have a systematic but moderate effect on its reflectance estimates. However, the network generalizes poorly beyond the type of images in its training set: it fails on a lightness matching task with unfamiliar stimuli, and does not account for several lightness illusions experienced by human observers.

Virtual image-based cloud removal for Landsat images

ABSTRACT The inevitable thick cloud contamination in Landsat images has severely limited the usability and applications of these images. Developing cloud removal algorithms has been a hot research topic in recent years. Many previous algorithms used one or multiple cloud-free image(s) in the same area acquired on other date(s) as reference image(s) to reconstruct missing pixel values. However, it remains challenging to determine the optimal reference image(s). In addition, abrupt land cover change can substantially degrade the reconstruction accuracies. To address these issues, we present a new cloud removal algorithm called Virtual Image-based Cloud Removal (VICR). For each cloud region, VICR reconstructs the missing surface reflectance by three steps: virtual image within cloud region construction based on time-series reference images, similar pixel selection using the newly proposed temporally weighted spectral distance (TWSD), and residual image estimation. By establishing two buffer zones around the cloud region, VICR allows automatic selection of the optimal set of time-series reference images. The effectiveness of VICR was validated at four testing sites with different landscapes (i.e. urban, croplands, and wetlands) and land change patterns (i.e. phenological change, abrupt change caused by flooding and tidal inundation), and the performances were compared with mNSPI (modified neighborhood similar pixel interpolator), WLR (weighted linear regression) and ARRC (AutoRegression to Remove Clouds). Experimental results showed that VICR outperformed the other algorithms and achieved higher Correlation Coefficients and lower Root Mean Square Errors in surface reflectance estimation at the four sites. The improvement is particularly noticeable at the sites with abrupt land change. By considering the difference in the contributions from the reference images, TWSD can select more reliable similar pixels to improve the prediction of abrupt change in surface reflectance. Moreover, VICR is more robust to different cloud sizes and to changing reference images. VICR is also computationally much faster than ARRC. The framework for time-series image cloud removal by VICR has great potential to be applied for large datasets processing.

Atmospheric Correction Inter-comparison eXercise, ACIX-II Land: An assessment of atmospheric correction processors for Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 over land

The correction of the atmospheric effects on optical satellite images is essential for quantitative and multi-temporal remote sensing applications. In order to study the performance of the state-of-the-art methods in an integrated way, a voluntary and open-access benchmark Atmospheric Correction Inter-comparison eXercise (ACIX) was initiated in 2016 in the frame of Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Working Group on Calibration & Validation (WGCV). The first exercise was extended in a second edition wherein twelve atmospheric correction (AC) processors, a substantially larger testing dataset and additional validation metrics were involved. The sites for the inter-comparison analysis were defined by investigating the full catalogue of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites for coincident measurements with satellites' overpass. Although there were more than one hundred sites for Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 acquisitions, the analysis presented in this paper concerns only the common matchups amongst all processors, reducing the number to 79 and 62 sites respectively. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Water Vapour (WV) retrievals were consequently validated based on the available AERONET observations. The processors mostly succeeded in retrieving AOD for relatively light to medium aerosol loading (AOD < 0.2) with uncertainties <0.08, while the overall uncertainty values were typically 0.23 ± 0.15. Better performances were observed for WV retrievals with >90% of the results falling within the suggested empirical specifications and with the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) being mostly <0.25 g/cm2. Regarding Surface Reflectance (SR) validation two main approaches were followed. For the first one, a simulated SR reference dataset was computed over all of the test sites by using the 6SV (Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum vector code) full radiative transfer modelling (RTM) and AERONET measurements for the required aerosol variables and water vapour content. The performance assessment demonstrated that the retrievals were not biased for most of the bands. The uncertainties ranged from approximately 0.003 to 0.01 (excluding B01) for the best performing processors in both sensors' analyses. For the second one, measurements from the radiometric calibration network RadCalNet over La Crau (France) and Gobabeb (Namibia) were involved in the validation. The performance of the processors was in general consistent across all bands for both sensors and with low standard deviations (<0.04) between on-site and estimated surface reflectance. Overall, our study provides a good insight of AC algorithms' performance to developers and users, pointing out similarities and differences for AOD, WV and SR retrievals. Such validation though still lacks of ground-based measurements of known uncertainty to better assess and characterize the uncertainties in SR retrievals.

Bayesian atmospheric correction over land: Sentinel-2/MSI and Landsat 8/OLI

Abstract. Mitigating the impact of atmospheric effects on optical remote sensing data is critical for monitoring intrinsic land processes and developing Analysis Ready Data (ARD). This work develops an approach to this for the NERC NCEO medium resolution ARD Landsat 8 (L8) and Sentinel 2 (S2) products, called Sensor Invariant Atmospheric Correction (SIAC). The contribution of the work is to phrase and solve that problem within a probabilistic (Bayesian) framework for medium resolution multispectral sensors S2/MSI and L8/OLI and to provide per-pixel uncertainty estimates traceable from assumed top-of-atmosphere (TOA) measurement uncertainty, making progress towards an important aspect of CEOS ARD target requirements. A set of observational and a priori constraints are developed in SIAC to constrain an estimate of coarse resolution (500 m) aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and total column water vapour (TCWV), along with associated uncertainty. This is then used to estimate the medium resolution (10–60 m) surface reflectance and uncertainty, given an assumed uncertainty of 5 % in TOA reflectance. The coarse resolution a priori constraints used are the MODIS MCD43 BRDF/Albedo product, giving a constraint on 500 m surface reflectance, and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) operational forecasts of AOT and TCWV, providing estimates of atmospheric state at core 40 km spatial resolution, with an associated 500 m resolution spatial correlation model. The mapping in spatial scale between medium resolution observations and the coarser resolution constraints is achieved using a calibrated effective point spread function for MCD43. Efficient approximations (emulators) to the outputs of the 6S atmospheric radiative transfer code are used to estimate the state parameters in the atmospheric correction stage. SIAC is demonstrated for a set of global S2 and L8 images covering AERONET and RadCalNet sites. AOT retrievals show a very high correlation to AERONET estimates (correlation coefficient around 0.86, RMSE of 0.07 for both sensors), although with a small bias in AOT. TCWV is accurately retrieved from both sensors (correlation coefficient over 0.96, RMSE &lt;0.32 g cm−2). Comparisons with in situ surface reflectance measurements from the RadCalNet network show that SIAC provides accurate estimates of surface reflectance across the entire spectrum, with RMSE mismatches with the reference data between 0.01 and 0.02 in units of reflectance for both S2 and L8. For near-simultaneous S2 and L8 acquisitions, there is a very tight relationship (correlation coefficient over 0.95 for all common bands) between surface reflectance from both sensors, with negligible biases. Uncertainty estimates are assessed through discrepancy analysis and are found to provide viable estimates for AOT and TCWV. For surface reflectance, they give conservative estimates of uncertainty, suggesting that a lower estimate of TOA reflectance uncertainty might be appropriate.

Modeling Spatial Distribution of Snow Water Equivalent by Combining Meteorological and Satellite Data with Lidar Maps

Abstract An accurate characterization of the water content of snowpack, or snow water equivalent (SWE), is necessary to quantify water availability and constrain hydrologic and land surface models. Recently, airborne observations (e.g., lidar) have emerged as a promising method to accurately quantify SWE at high resolutions (scales of ∼100 m and finer). However, the frequency of these observations is very low, typically once or twice per season in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Here, we present a machine learning framework that is based on random forests to model temporally sparse lidar-derived SWE, enabling estimation of SWE at unmapped time points. We approximated the physical processes governing snow accumulation and melt as well as snow characteristics by obtaining 15 different variables from gridded estimates of precipitation, temperature, surface reflectance, elevation, and canopy. Results showed that, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, our framework is capable of modeling SWE with a higher accuracy when compared with estimates generated by the Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS). The mean value of the coefficient of determination R2 using our approach was 0.57, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was 13 cm, which was a significant improvement over SNODAS (mean R2 = 0.13; RMSE = 20 cm). We explored the relative importance of the input variables and observed that, at the spatial resolution of 800 m, meteorological variables are more important drivers of predictive accuracy than surface variables that characterize the properties of snow on the ground. This research provides a framework to expand the applicability of lidar-derived SWE to unmapped time points. Significance Statement Snowpack is the main source of freshwater for close to 2 billion people globally and needs to be estimated accurately. Mountainous snowpack is highly variable and is challenging to quantify. Recently, lidar technology has been employed to observe snow in great detail, but it is costly and can only be used sparingly. To counter that, we use machine learning to estimate snowpack when lidar data are not available. We approximate the processes that govern snowpack by incorporating meteorological and satellite data. We found that variables associated with precipitation and temperature have more predictive power than variables that characterize snowpack properties. Our work helps to improve snowpack estimation, which is critical for sustainable management of water resources.

SVBRDF Estimation Using a Normal Sorting Technique

Spatially varying bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (SVBRDFs) play an important role in appearance modeling of real-world surfaces. Automatic capture of these surface properties is highly desirable, but many techniques only partially capture these properties or use complicated setups to do so. Micro surface roughness variations are especially difficult to capture using image-based methods. In this paper, we propose a novel approach towards estimating the complete SVBRDFs of surfaces using a portable projector-camera system made of standard consumer-grade components. Our approach uses insights about the relations between the illumination and viewing geometry and captured image statistics to estimate surface reflectance properties. Our technique should be of great value to practitioners seeking to model and render the geometric and reflectance properties of complex real-world surfaces.

Atmospheric Lengthscales for Global VSWIR Imaging Spectroscopy.

Future global Visible Shortwave Infrared Imaging Spectrometers, such as the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission, will regularly cover the Earth's entire terrestrial land area. These missions need high fidelity atmospheric correction to produce consistent maps of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem traits. However, estimation of surface reflectance and atmospheric state is computationally challenging, and the terabyte data volumes of global missions will exceed available processing capacity. This article describes how missions can overcome this bottleneck using the spatial continuity of atmospheric fields. Contemporary imaging spectrometers oversample atmospheric spatial variability, so it is not necessary to invert every pixel. Spatially sparse solutions can train local linear emulators that provide fast, exact inversions in their vicinity. We find that estimating the atmosphere at 200 m scales can outperform traditional atmospheric correction, improving speed by one to two orders of magnitude with no measurable penalty to accuracy. We validate performance with an airborne field campaign, showing reflectance accuracies with RMSE of 1.1% or better compared to ground measurements of diverse targets. These errors are statistically consistent with retrieval uncertainty budgets. Local emulators can close the efficiency gap and make rigorous model inversion algorithms feasible for global missions such as SBG.

Towards the Combination of C2RCC Processors for Improving Water Quality Retrieval in Inland and Coastal Areas

Sentinel-2 offers great potential for monitoring water quality in inland and coastal waters. However, atmospheric correction in these waters is challenging, and there is no standardized approach yet, but different methods coexist under constant development. The atmospheric correction Case 2 Regional Coast Colour (C2RCC) processor has been recently updated with the C2X-COMPLEX (C2XC). This study is one of the first attempts at exploring its performance, in comparison with C2RCC and C2X, in inland and coastal waters in the east of the Iberian Peninsula, in retrieving water surface reflectance and estimating chlorophyll-a ([Chl-a]), total suspended matter ([TSM]), and Secchi disk depth (ZSD). The relationship between in situ ZSD and Kd_z90max product (i.e., the depth of the water column from which 90% of the water-leaving irradiance is derived) of the C2RCC processors demonstrated the potential of this product for estimating water clarity (r &gt; 0.75). However, [TSM] and [Chl-a] derived from the different processors with default calibration factors were not suitable within the targeted scenarios, requiring recalibration based on optical water types or a shift to dynamic algorithm blending approaches. This would benefit from switching between C2RCC and C2XC, which extends the potential for improving surface reflectance estimates to a wide range of scenarios and suggests a promising future for C2-Nets in operational monitoring of water quality.
