FACTS Devices as a Solution to Power Industries Problems: A Review

With an ever-increasing demand for power and establishment of new industries with high load demand, the need to for constant upgrade of powers system network is high. Such transmission networks are prone to external disturbances from loads, environment and other sources which leads to low power quality. Sudden application or removal of large loads. Large loads are known to draw more reactive power than the generated reactive power which lead to reactive power imbalance which can lead to total system collapse. In this paper, a critical review of how Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices are used to mitigate such issues to ensure power quality is done. Previous work on the integration of different FACTS devices were review to establish the advantage of FACTS devices over conventional solutions to power transmission problems.

Modernization of Kuban Economy in Late 1920s — 1930s

The study examines the processes of development of the Kuban region’s industry and its production problems, which were addressed during the first five-year plans. The study presents the results of a comparative analysis of the industrial potential of the Kuban districts, and raises questions about their identification parameters, including directions of development, reconstruction processes, and outcomes. The study demonstrates that the main factors driving the growth of the region’s industry and the development of new sectors are the use of agricultural resources and their processing, expansion of fuel resources and construction materials, reconstruction, and improvements in technical equipment of enterprises. Special attention is given to the production growth and increased economic status of individual large factories and plants. The novelty of this research lies in the comprehensive analysis of industrial sector development in Kuban and their relationships, production growth, and realization of potential for the most significant enterprises in the context of modernization tasks during the first five-year plans. It is noted that four Kuban districts had traditionally played an important role in the economy, possessing a large raw material base specific to each district. The study shows that during the 1920s-1930s period, Kuban witnessed an increase in industrial production output, establishment of new industries (chemical, canning, machine-building, etc.), development of natural resources, and creation of a resort zone in the Kuban Black Sea region.

Regional static diversification and relatedness between industries

Abstract Relatedness has often been shown to have a central role in regional diversification. Knowledge flows between related industries are an important source of innovation, leading to industry growth and the establishment of new industries. Earlier studies have focused on dynamic diversification into new industries, but in this study, we emphasize static diversification, that is, changes in the balance between existing industries in a region. We use linked employer–employee data from Denmark and construct a range of measures at the level of regional industries. The role of relatedness in static diversification 2008–2013 is then analyzed based on industry characteristics in 2008. We find that relatedness plays a more important role in regions that are either spatially peripheral or economically non-peripheral, while relatedness has no relationship to static diversification on average. In addition to the empirical result, we contribute by comparing indices of relatedness, suggesting an alternative employment-weighted index, and conceptualizing relatedness as itself a disparity dimension of diversity. We finally ask how static and dynamic diversification affect disparity. We find that human capital intensity plays an important role in the link between diversification and the evolution of disparity.

Spatial Analysis of Liquid Pollutant Potential in Industrial Type UKL-UPL Documents In Jombang Regency

Background: The establishment of new industries is often associated with potential waste to be produced and environmental problems that may arise due to the activities carried out by the industry in the future. One of many environmental problems due to industrial waste is the pollution of water, air, and soil in the area around where the industry is located. The number of industrial types UKL-UPL submissions in Jombang Regency from 2006-2020 is unstable but tend to increase from 2015-2020. Jombang Regency is a downstream area of the Brantas River which its Water Quality Index has decreased from 49.17 in 2015 to 47.68 in 2016.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze spatially the location of the industry that had the potential for liquid pollutants and river distribution in Jombang Regency.Methods: This study uses observational research design with a quantitative descriptive approach with a spatial analysis model. The data used is secondary data, namely the submission data of Jombang Regency UKL UKL document in 2006-2020, coordinate data of the location of the industry, and spatial river data.Results: Industrial establishment plans on Jombang Regency are mostly centered around it’s regency seat. The length of rivers in Jombang tend to be longer in the northen and sourthern sub-districts. There is no significant difference on the location of industrial establishment plan to the nearest river for industries with and without liquid pollutant potentials (0.912 < 0.05).Conclusion: Even thought sub-districts with high industry counts has shorter river length, regular river water quality monitoring is required to be done so that it doesn’t exceed environmental quality standards and cause health problems.

Seeking the gravediggers of capitalism in China

More than 150 years ago, Marx predicted that the working class would become “the gravedigger of capitalism,” a seemingly prescient prediction as socialism flourished between the two World Wars. However, traditional capitalist countries are thriving, while many socialist countries have collapsed during the past quarter-century. Nonetheless, capitalism is revealing its flaws both in the developed world (e.g. recent financial crises) and in rapidly developing countries (e.g. ecological damage), leading to social unrest that is making Marx’s prediction relevant once more. Considering this situation from a broader historical perspective suggests that new social groups often evolve to fill niches left open by more traditional groups and can support the evolution of new social systems during the establishment of new industries, technologies, and institutions. Thus, they play a crucial role in initiating and guiding fundamental institutional change. Although capitalism has been surprisingly long-lived by historical standards for such systems, new systems may be evolving to push it aside. China’s rapid socioeconomic changes in recent decades provide an opportunity to watch new social groups emerge and begin to play an important role in changing social institutions. The institutional diversity created and sustained by these groups may be important for humanity’s long-term survival.

‘Progressive MS – macro views’: The need for novel clinical trial paradigms to enable drug development for progressive MS

This article outlines the principal challenges to establish a standard phase-2 approach for progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) and presents referring strategies to accelerate the registration process via a guidance approved by regulatory agencies. Accordingly, the contribution of ‘big datasets’ for a better understanding of the natural history of primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) and of their prognostic factors and the value of novel biomarkers are discussed. The establishment of new industry–academic initiatives, such as independent consortia under the umbrella of Progressive MS Alliance (PMSA), with the endorsement of MS organizations and Scientific Societies (e.g. European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS)) may be crucial to overcome some of the current challenges. Within this frame, the continuous interaction with regulatory agencies is instrumental for the formal validation of the many developments suitable to improve clinical trialling in PMS.

Priorities of industrial development of West Azerbaijan techniques using Fuzzy Topsis

Today, one of the main indicators for measuring national development, development of different sectors of the economic aspects of national, regional and international levels. So the decision was made to conduct this research in order to identify the capabilities and functions of manufacturing and commercial industries, The way to select the right investment and industrial development in Western Azerbaijan province paved. In this study population, different parts of West Azerbaijan industry is, In the fourth period of the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 has been considered and evaluated. To set goals and priorities of industrial development of the industry, the industrial and economic experts (Delphi method) was used. This study aims at identifying the industrial development and industrial sectors of the technique (Fuzzy Topsis) West Azerbaijan industrial development priorities are identified and ranked. According to the study, the group of food industry, medicine and health, with the largest weight (0.6960), the paper products industry (0.6101), Department of Textile Industries (0.5978), West Azerbaijan development priorities are, The priority objectives of the industry including increasing income, increasing employment and establishment of new industries, which are the first and third priorities. Overall, the results suggest that it is The West Azerbaijan Province of good potential for its proper role within the regional planning And national industrial development in order to achieve the objectives of Vision is a country.

Isidro Parga Pondal, o Seminario de Estudos Galegos e o laboratorio de Xeoquímica da Universidade de Santiago

Isidro Parga Pondal was one of the most important scientists who worked in the University of Santiago. His value as researcher has made that this institution, the Seminary of Galician Studies and the National Foundation for Scientifics Researchers and Trials of Reforms subsidized the establishment of the first laboratory of Geochemistry founded in Spain, which was directed by Parga. This laboratory made significant researches, a lot of them designed to search for practice applications that allowed the establishment of new industries in Galicia. This paper explains the origin of this laboratory, its characteristics, the activities which carried out and the investigations not ended because of the Parga’s expulsion of the University at the beginning of the Civil War.

Effect of Operating Variables on Regeneration of Base-Oil from Waste Oil by Conventional Acid-Clay Method

Lubricating oil requirement is increasing day by day with the establishment of new industries, increase in number of vehicular transports and mechanization of agriculture. Generated waste oil can be considered as a source of pollution or as a resource depending on the methods of utilization and management. This study compares different end- uses of waste oil and develops a pathway through which basic properties of the base-oil can be retrieved. In this study a pilot scale setup of conventional acid-clay technique was established to recover waste oil collected from different sources and a set of experimental runs were conducted by varying the different process variables. Effects of the operating variables on the product quality are also discussed in this article. The recovery of regenerated base-oil was found to be in between 62 to 66 percent from this experimental study.

Dynamics in innovation systems: Evidence from Japan's game software industry

In contrast to the US and recently Europe, Japan appears to be unsuccessful in establishing new industries. An oft-cited example is Japan's practical invisibility in the global business software sector. Literature has ascribed Japan's weakness – or conversely, America's strength – to the specific institutional settings and competences of actors within the respective national innovation system. It has additionally been argued that unlike the American innovation system, with its proven ability to give birth to new industries, the inherent path dependency of the Japanese innovation system makes innovation and establishment of new industries quite difficult. However, there are two notable weaknesses underlying current propositions postulating that only certain innovation systems enable the creation of new industries: first, they mistakenly confound context specific with general empirical observations. And second, they grossly underestimate – or altogether fail to examine – the dynamics within innovation systems. This paper will show that it is precisely the dynamics within innovation systems – dynamics founded on the concept of path plasticity – which have enabled Japan to charge forward as a global leader in a highly innovative field: the game software sector.

Assessing the Time Lag Between Transportation Investment and Economic Development by the Data Envelopment Approach

Efficient allocation of resources is of paramount importance in building reliable and efficient transportation systems. This is particularly true because of the key role that transportation plays in the economic development of any region. Despite continuing efforts by economists, planners, and transportation system analysts to determine the relationship between transportation investment and economic development, the correlation is yet to be understood clearly. One of the most intriguing matters is the time lag between the two. Transportation investments have a complex, dynamic influence on economic systems. They generate both direct and indirect benefits, and they have short-term effects such as an increase in construction-related employment and an increase in markets for local goods and services, as well as longer-term effects such as the establishment of new industries that are attracted by increased access to local goods and services. The time lag between transportation investment and economic return significantly affects how the benefits of an investment are evaluated. This paper examines a framework for evaluation based on the data envelopment analysis technique that captures the dynamic relationship between transportation investment and economic development. In the analysis performed, a strong correlation was observed between the relative scarcity of transportation infrastructure, as compared with other input parameters in the production process, and a lag time between investment and the materialization of economic return. Short-, medium-, and long-term time lags were analyzed in the study, and it is suggested that current demand for increased accessibility is correlated with the dynamic characteristics of time lag with spatial variation.

An Experimental Operating Room Project for Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery

With the challenges that the health sector now faces in accordance with readjustments and demands for increased efficiency, resource utilization, and innovation, we have initiated a project to develop the future operating room for advanced laparoscopic surgery. New hospitals are being built that contain numerous operating room theaters. To share experiences and avoid repeating the same mistakes as others, we find it suitable to build an "experimental" operating room theater where we can try out and study new equipment, logistics, and communications, and operating forms and new technology that both benefit the establishment of our hospital, as well as the establishment of other hospitals and their laparoscopic operating rooms nationally and internationally. The main goals in the project are, through research and development, to reveal information and develop technology and methods to establish more efficient and prospective patient treatment that is focused on quality. The project is deeply rooted in the established research environment in Trondheim, Norway. We will develop new integrated solutions in the laparoscopic operating unit to create a possibility to rapidly implement the results in the form of practical improvements, increased quality, and renovation in patient treatment. The goal is also that this will result in the establishment of new industry nationally.

This special issue commemorates the designation of the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics as the International Journal of the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers from 1999. The 2003 JSME Conference on Robotics and Mechatronics (ROBOMEC'03) was held in Hakodate May 23-25, 2003, sponsored by the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. The general chair was Prof. Mikami and the program chair was Prof. Furukawa. The purpose of the conference was to aid in the establishment of new industries using advanced robotics and mechatronics technologies. Technical sessions featured 70 organized sessions and 770 papers enjoyed by some 1,000 participants. This special issue presents a wide range of ROBOMEC'03 papers to disseminate informative and innovative results. The program committee selected 95 outstanding papers, or about 10%. Of the 36 submitted and reviewed by the Journal's referees, 28 were selected for publication. Special Issue Part 2 on Selected Papers from ROBOMEC'03 (Vol.16, No.3) presents 14, with others having already been presented in Part 1 (Vol.16, No.2). We thank the authors featured in this special issue for their time and effort. This special issue has been proposed in honor of the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics authorized to be the International Journal of the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers from 1999. The 2002 JSME Conference on Robotics and Mechatronics (ROBOMEC'02) was held in Matsue on June 7-9, 2002, sponsored by the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers and attended by 861 participants. The purpose of the conference was to aid future establishment of new industries by using advanced technologies of Robotics and Mechatronics. Technical sessions included 70 organized sessions in which 684 papers were presented. This special issue was organized by editing papers presented at ROBOMEC'02 to ensure that conference results reached the widest possible audience. The Conference Program Committee selected 40 papers -less than 6% of the total. We have included the 17 papers accepting an invitation for inclusion that were reviewed by journal referees and selected for publication in the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics Special Issue on Selected Papers from ROBOMEC'02 (Vol. 15, No. 2). We thank the authors who have contributed their updated papers, Editor-in-Chief Prof. Makoto Kaneko of Hiroshima University whose work has been indispensable in organizing this special issue, and the editors for selecting the papers.

Special Issue on ROBOMEC'99

This special issue is proposed in honor of the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics authorized as the International Journal of the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers from 1999. The 1999 JSME Conference on Robotics and Mechatronics (ROBOMEC’99) was held in Tokyo, on June 11-13, 1999, sponsored by the Robotics and Mechatronics Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. The purpose of the conference was to aid establishment of new industries using advanced Robotics and Mechatronics technologies. In the technical sessions, 81 sessions were held and a total of 579 papers presented to 946 participants. This special issue has been organized by editing papers presented at ROBOMEC'99 to distribute the significant results of the conference. I thank the authors who have contributed their papers to this special issue and thank Editor in Chief Prof. Makoto Kaneko (Hiroshima University), who has been indispensable in organizing this special issue. I also thank the Editors for the selection of papers.

A Primary Industry Perspective

This article develops a case for taking a broad perspective on the benefits generated from government involvement in international services. In particular it shows how government scientists and other officers, through involvement in exporting government services, can gain and maintain important scientific knowledge, and access genetic material from overseas. These activities may be vital for the establishment of new industries, as well as maintaining production efficiency in the private sector.The article further illustrates, through a case study, the unique role for government in assisting the private sector open up trade opportunities. In the case study example this was facilitated through sourcing overseas technology to treat mangos for fruit fly, and then after extensive testing and scientific work negotiating the removal of quarantine barriers to gain access to the lucrative Japanese market.

Integrating wood production into Australia farming systems

About 21% of agricultural land in Australia is seriously degraded by salination and wind erosion. Trees can contribute to overcoming these problems. There is potential for trees to also produce wood, thereby diversifying farmers' incomes, reducing Australia's bill for importing wood and increasing exports of wood products. Even though many of these multiple purpose plantings would be widely scattered and growth rates low in some regions, Australian farmers should have a comparative advantage in wood production because trees also provide substantial landcare and agricultural productivity benefits. The establishment of new industries based on wood from farmland requires leadership from Government, planning at national, regional and local levels, and innovative techniques to finance planting. Removal os taxation disincentives for wood producers and the introduction of legislation to allow profit a prendre contracts would provide more favourable conditions for investment.

THE ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE MODERNISATION PLAN FOR CHINA

Science and technology have been promoted as one of the catalysts to create the new China. National planning seeks to consolidate and modernise the existing system. Such priority areas as energy, materials, computers and high energy physics have been distinguished. Much discussion has related to the difficulties of integrating science and technology policy with economic policy. Specific problems have been centralised control over research and development, the acquisition of technology from other countries, and the establishment of new industries using the new technology.
