Synergistic optimization strategy for beamforming and power allocation in dual-functional radar-communication systems

The dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) integrated system presents an ideal solution to address the challenge of spectrum resource congestion in future networks. This paper explores an adaptive power allocation technique based on beamforming to enhance the word error probability (WEP) performance of the DFRC system. Initially, a joint optimization model is developed to minimize the WEP while adhering to constraints on radar signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR), peak-to-average-power ratio, sidelobe level, and total transmit power. This model incorporates dual-function transmit beam, radar, and communication receive beam patterns. Subsequently, the proposed subproblem convex relaxation alternating update (SCRAU) algorithm is introduced to achieve a locally optimal solution for multi-carrier power allocation. This algorithm decomposes the original non-convex optimization problem into three sub-problems with lower complexity and iteratively optimizes them. Simulation experiments validate that the SCRAU algorithm can simultaneously fulfill radar and communication functions. The SCRAU algorithm demonstrates superior WEP performance compared to current advanced algorithms.

Quantum Limits of Covert Target Detection.

In covert target detection, Alice attempts to send optical or microwave probes to determine the presence or absence of a weakly reflecting target embedded in thermal background radiation within a target region, while striving to remain undetected by an adversary, Willie, who is co-located with the target and collects all light that does not return to Alice. We formulate this problem in a realistic setting and derive quantum-mechanical limits on Alice's error probability performance in entanglement-assisted target detection for any fixed level of her detectability by Willie. We demonstrate how Alice can approach this performance limit using two-mode squeezed vacuum probes in the regime of small to moderate background brightness, and how such protocols can outperform any conventional approach using Gaussian-distributed coherent states. In addition, we derive a universal performance bound for nonadversarial quantum illumination without requiring the passive-signature assumption.

On the integral and derivative identities of bivariate Fox H-function and applications in performance analysis of wireless communications under generalized Gaussian noise

In conjunction with an algebraic, exponential, complementary error function, and a generalized Q-function, this paper provides analytical solutions for the integral of the bivariate Fox H-function (BFHF). The paper also includes derivative identities related to function arguments. The proposed formulations are then applied for analyzing the performance of point-to-point wireless communication subjected to fading, the characterization of which involves the bivariate Fox H-function, and additive white generalized Gaussian noise. Novel expressions are presented for evaluating the average symbol error probability performance considering different noise distributions, such as Gamma, Gaussian, and Laplacian. An asymptotic analysis is also conducted to determine the system’s potential diversity order. Finally, the accuracy of the analytical findings is confirmed via comparisons of numerical results with Monte-Carlo simulations.

Average bit error probability performance of intelligent reflecting surface‐aided wireless communications over Hoyt fading

SummaryIn this article, the performance of a wireless communication system with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) panel installed between the transmitter and receiver is studied. The channel is considered to be the Hoyt faded and additive white Gaussian noise. Closed‐form expressions for average bit error probability (ABEP) for both coherent Gray‐coded rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation and non‐coherent modulation schemes are presented. We apply the moment‐generating function‐based method for the derivation. In addition, asymptotic ABEP expressions are also obtained. Using asymptotic ABEP expressions, we obtained diversity order which is a function of the number of IRS elements. The effect of the number of IRS elements and fading parameters on the ABEP is studied. The ABEP performance improves with an increase in the number of reflecting elements but degrades with an increase in the fading severity. The accuracy of each analytical ABEP expression is verified by the simulation of the system considered herewith.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Short-Packet Uplink Communications: A Finite Blocklength Analysis

In this letter, we investigate the performance of Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for an uplink communication system with finite blocklegnth (FBL). Considering a two-user Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) Multiple Access Channel (MAC), we study the impact of blocklength and target rate on the throughput and error probability performance of RSMA where one user message is split. We demonstrate that RSMA can outperform Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) in terms of throughput and error probability performance.

Performance Analysis of Polar Codes Over Fox’s H-Fading Channels With RHI and IQI Impairments

This study examined the error probability performance of polar codes across Fox’s <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$H$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -fading (FHF) channels while taking into account in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI), as well as residual hardware impairments (RHI). This fading model generalizes most of the commonly used fading and turbulence models where Málaga- <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\mathcal {M}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> turbulence is taken into account as a specific case of FHF in this paper. Specifically, an upper bound on block error probability (BLER) for the successive cancellation (SC) decoding method of polar codes is derived in terms of the Fox’s <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$H$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -function. According to numerical results, by lengthening polar codes and changing the properties of fading channels, it is possible to decrease the impact of system impairments on the error probability performance.

Impact of Rotary-Wing UAV Wobbling on Millimeter-Wave Air-to-Ground Wireless Channel

Millimeter-wave rotary-wing (RW) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) links face unpredictable Doppler effect arising from the inevitable wobbling of RW UAV. Moreover, the time-varying channel characteristics during transmission lead to inaccurate channel estimation, which in turn results in the deteriorated bit error probability performance of the UAV A2G link. This paper studies the impact of mechanical wobbling on the Doppler effect of the millimeter-wave wireless channel between a hovering RW UAV and a ground node. Our contributions of this paper lie in: i) modeling the wobbling process of a hovering RW UAV; ii) developing an analytical model to derive the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) for the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link in a closed-form expression; and iii) investigating how RW UAV wobbling impacts the Doppler effect on the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. Numerical results show that different RW UAV wobbling patterns impact the amplitude and the frequency of ACF oscillation in the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. For UAV wobbling, the temporal ACF decreases quickly and the impact of the Doppler effect is significant on the millimeter-wave A2G link.

Error analysis of SISO and dual-branch communications with generalized Gaussian noise over FTR fading channels

In this paper, we present error probability analysis for single-input single-output (SISO) and asymmetric dual-branch networks with additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN) over millimeter-wave (mmW) fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading channels. Then, we examine the error probability evaluation of a SISO system with imperfect phase errors over mmW FTR fading channels. The probability density function (PDF) approach is employed for the error probability performance evaluation and the novel PDF of the asymmetric dual-branch system over Nakagami-m/mmW FTR fading channels is obtained. Specifically, closed-form expressions are derived for the error probability of the SISO and asymmetric dual-branch networks. The derived error expressions facilitate in effectively evaluating the performance of considered networks in the presence of AWGGN and imperfect phase noise with optimal fading parameters and modulation type. The theoretical derivations are extensively confirmed through exact simulations.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF MRC-SC MACRODIVERSITY RECEPTION OVER GENERALIZED FADING CHANNELS

This paper shows a detailed statistical characterization of a specific system configuration consisting of one multibranch maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) and one selection-combining (SC) micro-level base station, and SC back processing unit at macro level. Primarily, the scenario of the independent and identically distributed generalized-K fading channels is investigated. After that, the correlated branches at SC-based micro-level are assumed. The outage probability and the error probability performance for both cases are defined. According to the presented analytical analysis, numerical results are obtained. Also, the impact of the number of MRC and SC input branches, the impact of the fading/shadowing factor, the predefined outage threshold, the average signal-to-noise ratios and the correlation coefficient on the specified system performance is shown. Simulations validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical analysis.

A comprehensive analytical perspective of ASEP for Beaulieu‐Xie fading channels

SummaryThis study presents the average symbol error probability (ASEP) performance of a single‐input single‐output communication with imperfect phase error (IPE) and without IPE over the Beaulieu‐Xie fading channels. The Beaulieu‐Xie fading model is proposed recently and it is a popular characterization for the line‐of‐sight and non‐line‐of‐sight environments. The proposed theoretical analysis, which is based on the probability density function, is enough general and applicable in some real‐life scenarios. For both cases, closed‐form exact, approximate, and asymptotic expressions are derived for the ASEP of different modulation types. Finally, exact simulations have been introduced to confirm the accuracy of the theoretical findings obtained and present insights into the considered scheme performance.

Performance analysis of LDPC coded GFDM systems

This paper analyzes the error probability performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) systems over Rayleigh fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The initial log-likelihood ratio (LLR) expressions used in the sum-product algorithm (SPA) decoder are first derived for the system model presented in this paper. Based on the decoding threshold of the system, the frame error rate (FER) in the low E b / N 0 $E_b/N_0$ region is estimated by modeling the channel variations using the observed bit error rate (BER). Then, a lower bound based on the absorbing sets is proposed for FER when quantized SPA decoders are used. For AWGN channels, the lower bound can act as an estimate of the FER in the error-floor region if the absorbing set is dominant and its multiplicity is known. For Rayleigh channels, the lower bound can still be used to estimate the FER performance of selected codes. The estimation approach for the FER in the low E b / N 0 $E_b/N_0$ region and the lower bound on the FER in the high E b / N 0 $E_b/N_0$ region can be used as practical tools for evaluating different designs of GFDM-based systems in terms of the error probability performance. The quantization scheme has an important impact on the FER and BER performances. Randomly constructed and array-based LDPC codes are used to obtain numerical results that show the system performance and the accuracy of the proposed FER estimations.

Efficient Timing Offset Estimation Method Tailored for ACO-OFDM VLC Systems

The asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM)-based visible light communication (VLC) system has received widespread attention due to its capability to support high spectrum efficiency as well as high power efficiency. The accuracy of symbol timing offset estimation is a critical factor limiting the performance of ACO-OFDM. In order to cope with this challenge, a training symbol-aided symbol timing synchronization method tailored for ACO-OFDM is put forward. The influence of the design of training symbol structure and timing metric on the synchronization accuracy is investigated, and three timing metrics are presented to supply simple and efficient timing offset estimation by utilizing the structure of odd-even mirror-symmetric and complementary symmetric of the newly designed training symbol. In addition, the system bit error rate (BER) penalty induced by timing synchronization error is analyzed, and the approximate relationship between BER performance loss and timing estimation error probability and ideal BER performance is presented. Simulation is used to assess the performance of the three proposed timing metric methods in different channel environments, and they are compared with the two existing timing synchronization algorithms in ACO-OFDM, namely the modified Park method and the Tian method. The results show that the new synchronization method is superior to the comparison methods concerning achievable synchronization accuracy and system BER penalty.

An Investigation of the MIMO Space Time Block Code Based Selective Decode and Forward Relaying Network over n-u Fading Channel Conditions

In this paper, we examine the end-to-end average pairwise error probability (PEP) and output probability (OP) performance of the maximum ratio combining (MRC) based selective decode and forward (S-DF) system over an η–µ scattering environment considering additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The probability distribution function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) expressions have been derived for the received signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio and the moment generating function (MGF) technique is used to derive the novel closed-form (CF) average PEP and OP expressions. The analytical results have been further simplified and are presented in terms of the Lauricella function for coherent complex modulation schemes. The asymptotic PEP expressions are also derived in terms of the Lauricella function, and a convex optimization (CO) framework has been developed for obtaining optimal power allocation (OPA) factors. Through simulations, it is also proven that, depending on the number of multi-path clusters and the modulation scheme used, the optimized power allocation system was essentially independent of the power relation scattered waves from the source node (SN) to the destination node (DN). The graphs show that asymptotic and accurate formulations are closely matched for moderate and high SNR regimes. PEP performance significantly improves with an increase in the value of η for a fixed value of µ. The analytical and simulation curves are in close agreement for medium-to-high SNR values.

Mobile Performance Intelligent Evaluation of IoT Networks Based on DNN

The rapid development of the sensor equipment has promoted the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT has been widely employed in the multidimensional signal processing and gradually formed the IoT networks. Mobile communication promotes the wide application of the IoT networks. In this study, the transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme is employed to investigate the average symbol error probability (ASEP) performance of mobile IoT networks over the 2-Rayleigh channels. We first employ moment-generating function (MGF) approach to derive the exact ASEP expressions. We also investigate the outage probability (OP) performance and derive OP expressions. Employing the deep neural network (DNN), an OP intelligent prediction algorithm is proposed. Then, the numerical simulations are conducted to confirm the ASEP and OP performance analysis. The effect of different channel parameters is also analyzed. Compared with Nakagami and Rayleigh channel models, the 2-Rayleigh model has 83.6% and 59.1% increase in ASEP values, respectively. Compared with ELM and RBF models, the DNN model has 31.7% and 22.5% increase in OP prediction accuracy, respectively.

A New RIS Architecture With a Single Power Amplifier: Energy Efficiency and Error Performance Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication have recently attracted the attention of the wireless communication community as a potential candidate for the next $6$-th generation (6G) of wireless networks. Various studies have been carried out on the RIS technology, which is capable of enabling the control of the signal propagation environment by network operators. However, when an RIS is used in its inherently passive structure, it appears to be only a supportive technology for communications, while suffering from a multiplicative path loss. Therefore, researchers have lately begun to focus on RIS hardware designs with minimal active elements to further boost the benefits of this technology. In this paper, we present a simple RIS hardware architecture including a single and variable gain amplifier for reflection amplification to confront the multiplicative path loss. The end-to-end signal model for communication systems assisted with the proposed amplifying RIS design is presented, together with an analysis focusing on the capacity maximization and theoretical bit error probability performance, which is corroborated by computer simulations. In addition, the major advantages of the proposed amplifying RIS design compared to its passive counterpart are discussed. It is shown that the proposed RIS-based wireless system significantly eliminates the double fading problem appearing in conventional passive RIS-assisted systems and improves the communication energy efficiency.

Asymmetric Linear Physical-Layer Network Coding

In this letter, we put forth a new asymmetric linear PNC (A-LPNC) scheme for the setup where the users are subject to non-identical power constraints and modulation schemes. For deterministic channel, we show that given any pair of average symbol energies, the effective minimum distance of A-LPNC constellation can be made to be identical to the single-user minimum distance, translated into optimal error probability performance at a medium to high SNR. For fading channel, we show that the optimized network coding coefficients can be found and employed such that the effective minimum distance of A-LPNC is equal to the single-user minimum distance lower bound for integer channel gains. For real-valued channel gains, we present the optimal NC coefficients selection that minimizes the error probability of A-LPNC. These results are verified via simulations.

Predictive estimation of low density parity check decoded data based on error pattern modelling in wireless body area networks

SummaryWireless body area networks (WBANs) dynamically track a person's health data wirelessly. The implant‐to‐implant communication (CM1) inside the human body requires low power, highly reliable channels amidst the high losses and attenuation due to the various portions of the body. This attenuation and noise results in complete variation of the monitored health data, resulting in faulty medical diagnosis and alarms. Low density parity check (LDPC) algorithms are popular for error correction in this scenario. However, they still need to be improved for a more reasonable analysis of the health status. We suggest processing of the sensed data to increase the sparsity, thereby improving the bit error probability performance of the LDPC coding technique. Further, we propose the use of Kalman filter to estimate the actually transmitted bit from the LDPC decoded message output. The simulation results show that the proposed technique improve the error correction capability of the LDPC code. The increased energy, time and computations required for the same is found to be within a satisfactory level for the proper functioning of the WBANs.

On the Symbol Error Probability of STBC-NOMA with Timing Offsets and Imperfect Successive Interference Cancellation

Due to the ability to handle a large number of users, low latency, and high data rates, NON-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered a promising access technology for next-generation communication systems. However, as the number of users increases, each user experiences a greater number of successive interference cancellations (SIC), causing the system’s performance to decline. With the increase in the number of users, the fraction of power allocated to each user becomes smaller. Cooperative communication in downlink NOMA is considered as a potential approach to enhance the reliability, capacity, and performance over wireless channels. Space-time block code (STBC)-aided cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) offers an opportunity to improve the weak users’ signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) through strong user cooperation. In this paper, we study the symbol error probability (SEP) performance of the STBC-NOMA and derive the asymptotic expression for SEP when the network is impaired with imperfect SIC (ipSIC) and timing offsets. The simulation results show that the performance of STBC-NOMA was degraded significantly with an increase in the imperfection of SIC and timing errors and that traditional orthogonal access schemes, such as orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA), should be used after a threshold SIC level.

Performance Analysis of Energy Harvesting-Based Smart Grid Dynamic HAN With SSK Modulation

This letter analyzes the performance of a dynamic home area network (HAN) for smart grid communication using space shift keying modulation and energy harvesting. HAN plays a vital role in communication between home appliances and smart meters. The network considered here is with the multiple numbers of transmitting antennas at each home appliance and a single receiving antenna at the smart meter, which operates under the Saleh-Valenzuela channel. The average bit error probability performance of the indoor HAN with wireless power communication is derived in closed form by implementing the multi-user selection combining method. The numerical results and simulation results are presented to illustrate the impact of energy harvesting on system performance.

Performance vs. Spectral Properties for Single-Sideband Continuous Phase Modulation

This study revokes the performance of continuous phase modulation (CPM) able to generate a single-sideband (SSB) spectrum directly. This signal is analyzed in terms of modulation indices, pulse lengths, and pulse widths, all of which affect error probability, bandwidth, SSB property, and receiver complexity. The error probability performance is based on an approximation of the minimum Euclidean distance. A numerical power spectral density calculation for this particular SSB modulation in terms of the modulation index is presented. Reasonable tradeoffs in designing modulation schemes have been proposed using multi-objective optimization to ensure sizable improvements in bit error rate (BER), spectral efficiencies, and complexity without losing the property of being a SSB signal. Performance comparisons are made with known CPM schemes, e.g., Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) and Raised Cosine based CPM (RC).
