Error-free soliton transmission at 20 Gbit/s over 7150 km through all-optical synchronous phase modulation

All-optical soliton synchronous phase modulation through transmission fibre is shown to enable error-free propagation of 20 Gbit/s signals up to 7150 km without the need for dispersion management. Tolerance to imperfect clock-signal synchronisation is characterised experimentally.

By transmitting trains of 214 bit pseudorandom words in a recirculating loop containing strong, sliding-frequency guiding filters, ‘error-free’ (measured BER ≤, 10−9) soliton transmission at 10 Gbit/s, single channel, and at 20 Gbit/s in a two channel WDM is demonstrated, over paths as great as 20 000 km and 13 000 km, respectively.

By transmitting trains of 213 bit pseudorandom words in a recirculating loop, we demonstrate ‘error-free’ (measured BER ≥10−10) soliton transmission at 5 Gbit/s, single channel, and at 10 Gbit/s in a two channel WDM, over paths as great as 15 400 km and 11 250 km, respectively.

Demonstration of error-free soliton transmission at 2.5 Gbit/s over more than 14,000 km

Error-free (bit error rate ≤ 10−10) soliton transmission at 2.5 Gbit/s over paths greater than 14,000 km, measured by a novel technique suitable for use in a recirculating loop, is reported.

For the transmissions, the transform-limited soliton pulse source is a gain-switched distributed-feedback laser diode with a narrowband spectral filter and erbium amplifiers. A LiNbO/sub 3/ light intensity modulator is used for pulse switching. The preemphasis technique for sending solitons over a long distance, in which an erbium optical repeater is installed every 25 km as a lumped amplifier, is used. >

5 Gbit/s, 250 km error-free soliton transmission with Er3+-doped fibre amplifiers and repeaters

Error-free solition transmission at a bit rate of 5 Gbit/s over 250 km has been accomplished. The transform-limited soliton pulse source is a gain-switched DFB laser diode with a narrow-band spectral filter and Er amplifiers. A LiNbO3 light intensity modulator is used for pulse switching. A new ‘pre-emphasis technique’ for sending solitons over a longdistance is used, in which an Er3+-doped fibre amplifier is installed every 25 km as a lumped amplifier.
