Institutional Pressure and Business Sustainable Performance: Does Environmental Management Accounting Matter?

This study investigates the relationship between institutional pressures (IP) and sustainable business performance (SP) within Oman’s industrial sector, emphasizing on the mediating role of environmental management accounting (EMA). Drawing from the institutional theory, a sample of 307 respondents from Oman-based manufacturing firms listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange was considered. Data were gathered via an online questionnaire directed at accounting and finance professionals, with an impressive response rate of 96%. Using structural equation modelling through SPSS and AMOS, the analysis revealed that coercive pressure has a positive yet insignificant influence on SP, while normative pressure significantly correlates with SP. Additionally, while most dimensions of IP positively influence EMA, normative pressure was found to have no significant relationship with EMA. The results further confirm the significant positive impact of EMA on SP. This study underscores the pivotal role of EMA in fostering a sustainable business environment in Oman, accentuating the need for environment-friendly policies driven by IP.

Does air pollution motivate organisations to adopt environmental management accounting practices? Evidence from South Africa

This paper identifies the extent of air pollution in motivating companies to implement environmental management accounting (EMA) practices in 67 mining and cement companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), South Africa, from 2012 to 2021. Pooled ordinary least squares regression is applied to analyse the data. EMA is proxied by environmental training, environmental audits and energy efficiency, while air pollution is measured based on the air quality index (AQI). The results show that air pollution is essential for companies to adopt EMA practices. This means that when air quality declines within a company’s locality, a company proactively adopts EMA practices. This suggests that air pollution is a key basis of companies' adoption of EMA, as predicted by the legitimacy theory. The study includes three control variables: size, return on assets (ROA) and number of years listed on JSE. Two control variables, namely Size and ROA, portray a positive and significant effect on adopting EMA from air pollution. This portrays that a financially stable company tends to submit to air pollution and use EMA to counter the pollution. In contrast, as the number of years increases for companies listed on JSE, EMA will likely be adopted less to reduce air pollution.

Green decisions: The role of environmental strategies and proactivity in India’s manufacturing micro enterprises

This study investigates the implication of environmental strategies and environmental management accounting (EMA) on the environmental performance of manufacturing micro companies in India. It also assesses the mediating influence of EMA and the moderating impact of environmental proactivity. This paper employs the natural resource-based view theory to evaluate the domination of environmental strategies and EMA on environmental effectiveness. Even though MSMEs play a significant role in the Indian economy, their environmental impact is considerable due to less stringent adherence to environmental standards and practices. The data were gathered via a survey administered to managers of MSMEs. In the analysis, 107 reliable responses were included. Partial least square structural equation modeling is employed for the analysis of the dataset. The results show that environmental strategies positively influence environmental performance and EMA. EMA operates as a mediator for environmental strategies and environmental outcomes. Moreover, environmental proactivity moderates the association between environmental strategies and environmental performance. Hypotheses testing results conclude that manufacturing micro companies that emphasize environmental strategies and factors have improved environmental performance. Companies that proactively deal with environmental issues develop strategies to achieve sustainability.

The Role of Environmental Management Accounting in Mediating Green Innovation to Firm Value: Moderated by Quality Management

Firm value is an important indicator for increasing the competitiveness of a company amidst very tight business competition. This research aims to obtain empirical evidence regarding the influence of Green Innovation on Firm Value which is mediated Environmental Management Accounting and moderated by Quality Management. The companies that are the object of this research are manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) for the 2020-2022 period. The sampling technique in this research used a purposive sampling method and obtained 65 companies. The multicollinearity test and heteroscedasticity test are used as classical assumption tests. Eviews 12 software with panel data regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis. Based on the research results, it was found that green innovation, environmental management accounting, green innovation have an influence on Firm Value, environmental management accounting has an influence in mediating the relationship between green innovation and Firm Value and quality management can moderate the relationship between green innovation and Firm Value.

Institutional Pressures and Environmental Management Accounting Adoption: Do Environmental Strategy Matter?

This paper examines the impact of institutional pressures (IPs) on Environmental Management Accounting adoption (EMA). The current research also aims to examine the moderating effect of environmental strategy (ES) on the relationship between IP and EMA. Data were collected from managers working in all registered Egyptian manufacturing companies (N = 491). The collected data were analyzed using smart partial least squares (Smart-PLS) software. The results revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between IP’s three components, namely, coercive, normative, and mimicry pressures, and EMA. The results also revealed that ES was found to moderate the relationship between IP and EMA. The study model was able to explain 68.9% of the variance in EMA adoption. The findings of this study serve as a pivotal yardstick for guiding corporate policy formulation, offering valuable insights to drive continuous improvements in EMA, environmental performance, and sustainable development. The present investigation extends the discourse on the role of IP and ES by revealing a substantial influence on EMA adoption. Positioned as one of the initial studies to delve into the moderating role of ES in the relationship between IP and EMA adoption, this research offers insights within an emerging market context.

Application of Environmental Management Accounting in Increasing Product Innovation in Balado Salsabila Chips

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui Penerapan Akuntansi Manajemen Lingkungan dalam meningkatkan inovasi produk. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Data yang digunakan adalah data primer yang diperoleh dari wawancara dengan Owner Keripik Singkong Salsabila yang beralamatkan di Jalan Bumi Andalas, Kubu Dalam Parak Karakah, Padang Timur . Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa Usaha Keripik Balado Salsabila dalam Penerapan Akuntansi Manajemen Lingkungan dan inovasi produk sudah cukup baik, namun masih ada beberapa hal yang harus diterapkan berkaitan dengan manajemen lingkungan, seperti laporan keuangan dan sistem limbah. Walaupun demikian Owner Keripik Balado Salsabila telah memberikan informasi dengan baik sehingga memberikan kendali terhadap aktivitas lingkungannya.

Determinants and impact of strategy-driven manufacturing accounting techniques on organisational competitiveness: a structural equation modelling approach

Purpose This study aims to investigate contextual factors affecting the deployment of strategy-driven manufacturing accounting techniques (SMAT), as well as the impact of SMAT usage on organisational competitiveness. Seven major SMAT were investigated, namely, benchmarking, integrated performance measurement, environmental management accounting, strategic costing, strategic pricing, strategic investment and life cycle costing. Design/methodology/approach By using multi-informant strategy, structured questionnaire was used to gather survey data from 129 senior accounting, finance and production personnel of publicly quoted manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Data was analysed using structural equation modelling and propensity score matching. Findings Result shows that the usage rate of the SMAT is generally moderate. Market orientation and deliberate strategy formulation are notable determinants of SMAT usage. The inability of competition intensity and perceived environmental uncertainty to notably affect SMAT usage suggests that external environmental pressure to use SMAT is weak. Practical implications Although the impact of SMAT usage on organisational competitiveness is positive and statistically significant, it is conceivable that the impact of SMAT could have been more assuming SMAT recorded extensive usage. Thus, the lack of competitiveness of manufacturing companies in Nigeria may not be unconnected to the superficial usage of SMAT. Originality/value The study contributes to knowledge in three ways. First, it extends studies on the contingency theory that contextual factors influence the adoption of management accounting innovations. Second, it exposes the contextual factors affecting the adoption of SMAT in a developing country. Third, it provides evidence on the value relevance of management accounting innovation in enhancing organisational competitiveness.

Environmental Management Accounting Information and Environmental Performance, the Mediating Effect of Environmental Decision Quality

In recent times, there has been a heightened focus from both governments and societies towards evaluating Organisations’ Environmental Performance (OEP). Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) is pivotal in elevating OEP as it offers a holistic perspective to elucidate the environmental impacts and associated costs of diverse business activities. This research delves into the dynamic interplay between EMA information and the OEP. The study entails the administration of a questionnaire to Jordanian organisations listed on the Amman Stock Exchange. The research adopts the Resource-Based View Theory. The study establishes statistically significant positive connections between these variables by employing partial least square structural equation modelling (SEM) for data analysis. Central to this investigation is identifying Environmental Decision Quality (EDQ) as a mediating capability. This capability is the mechanism for translating the relationship between EMA information and OEP. This finding underscores the pivotal role of in-formed decision-making in converting such information into tangible improvements in environmental performance. The research makes a notable contribution by expanding the understanding of EMA, highlighting its informational value beyond merely the practice considerations. Moreover, findings provide invaluable guidance for policymakers and regulatory bodies striving to promote sustainable business practices, especially pertinent in the context of developing nations.

Measuring and reporting environmental impacts of dairy farming

Purpose This study aims to explore farmers’ perceptions of environmental impacts of dairying and their practices towards implementing environmental management accounting (EMA) techniques. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were held with five dairy farmers in the South Island of New Zealand (NZ). Findings Dairy farmers perceive environmental sustainability in dairying as being able to feed people while protecting the environment so that future generations can also enjoy the natural world. Recognising the need to alter their practices to reduce environmental damage they have produced, dairy farmers use some EMA techniques, but the primary motivation is compliance with government regulations. Other motivations for using EMA techniques are high economic returns, maintaining their reputation and self-satisfaction. Barriers to implementing EMA techniques are primarily due to lack of clarity and feasibility of regulations, coercion and inadequate communication by regulators and high compliance costs. Originality/value The findings contribute to the current EMA literature by providing a better understanding of EMA practices of dairy farmers in NZ, barriers to implementing EMA and how those barriers could be reduced. It may also help NZ central and local government in developing environmental strategies and policies. Furthermore, this research is expected to help people in the dairy industry to find ways to educate farmers about how the measures that are required can help them to reduce both the environmental impacts and the costs of dairying, thus contributing to sustainable development globally.

Analisis penerapan akuntansi manajemen lingkungan pada UD. SUMU di Manado

This study aims to determine the application of environmental management accounting of the UD. Sumu in Manado. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of the research obtained Environmental costs related to waste management are costs that arise from activities related to the management of production waste to prevent environmental pollution. Waste management plays a crucial role in company operations. UD. Sumu has carried out the accounting process for waste management costs. Although UD. Sumu has recorded environmental costs by allocating funds for waste handling, but the reporting of these costs still does not meet the applicable standards. The company, in carrying out its operations, is committed to not producing negative impacts on the environment. So far, UD. Sumu has not specifically recorded its environmental activities as part of environmental costs, especially prevention costs.

The role of corporate environmental ethics in shaping environmental management accounting adoption under the institutional theory

This study aims to investigate the complex association between institutional pressure, adoption of environmental management accounting (EMA), and financial performance, with corporate environmental ethics as a moderating component. It explains why and how firms adopt EMA in response to institutional demand to factor environmental factors into their strategic decision-making processes. Quantitative information is gathered using a structured questionnaire from 256 manufacturing companies’ environmental managers and executives who monitor environmental practices and policies and decision-makers who shape business environmental ethics and strategy in the Indian state of Karnataka. Data are analyzed using SmartPLS 4, and PLS-SEM tests the hypotheses. The results show that coercive pressure (β = 0.244, p = 0.000), mimetic pressure (β = 0.221, p = 0.000), and normative pressure (β = 0.209, p = 0.000) have a major role in determining the rate of EMA adoption. It is further identified that EMA adoption (β = 0.217, p = 0.000) positively influences the organization's financial performance. Furthermore, EMA adoption mediates the relationship between coercive pressure (β = 0.053, p = 0.000), normative pressure (β = 0.045, p = 0.000), mimetic pressure (β = 0.048, p = 0.000), and firm’s financial performance. Coercive pressure is associated with higher EMA adoption, although the impact of this link is moderated by corporate environmental ethics (β = 0.069, p = 0.000).

The Role of Environmental Management Accounting in Economic Development through Corporate Product and Process Innovation in East Java Indonesia

Aims: This research aims to examine the influence of environmental management accounting on economic development through innovation
 Study Design: This research hypothesis testing was carried out using the Partial Least Square (PLS) approach.
 Place of Study: The sample data for this research was obtained from 150 respondents. The respondents in this research sample were accounting managers of manufacturing companies in East Java.
 Methodology: This research method is quantitative. This research will test the influence of the relationship between variables, namely the independent variable consisting of environmental management accounting as the independent variable (X1). The product innovation variable (Z1) and the process innovation variable (Z2) are mediating variables, and economic development (Y) is the dependent variable.
 Results: The result of the test shows that Environmental management accounting (EMA) is proven to have a positive and significant influence on Economic development, with a t value > t table (5.526 > 1.975) and a path coefficient of 0.000. The product innovation is also able to strongly mediate the relationship between environmental management accounting (EMA) and economic development, this finding is supported by the value of t count > t table (2.710 > 1.975) and a path coefficient of 0.000. The latest test results also prove that process innovation is also able to strengthen the relationship between Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) variables and economic development.
 Conclusion: Overall, the results of this study support the dimensions of management accounting environment (AML) can increase economic development even though companies carry out product innovation and process innovation activities. This research provides a perspective on possible strategies companies to achieve more effective environmental management accounting and supports company goals related to product innovation and company process innovation.

Environmental accounting in public sector: systematic literature review

Research aims: The literature on Environmental Accounting (EA) in the public sector is scarce, unlike in the private sector. Hence, this study aims to ascertain the trajectory of EA research in the public sector and extract insights from prior research on EA in the public sector.Design/Methodology/Approach: The research process was conducted in several stages following Anggraini et al. (2022) and Poje et al. (2022) with several modifications. The keywords were used to discover the articles relating to the topic, namely: “Environmental Reporting,” “Environmental Management,” or “Environmental Accounting,” “Green Accounting,” and “Public Sector”. The study employed an extended period, namely papers published in 2010-2023 in the database Scopus.com. Based on the specified criteria, the final paper that could be analyzed was 69 out of 112 articles.Research findings: Using VOS-viewer, 15 items of keyword themes were discovered. Then, the 15 items were classified into three clusters: Green Accounting, Environmental Regulation, and Sustainable Development Goals in the Public Sector. Theoretical contribution/Originality: The authors are unaware of any existing literature review research on EA, specifically in the public sector, even though it arises from environmental management accounting in the public sector. This study also demonstrates the inferences that can be derived.

The Influence of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management Accounting on the Sustainability Performance of the Patra Bali Resort and Villas

This research aims to examine and analyze the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management Accounting on Sustainability Performance. Conducted by The Patra Bali Resort & Villas, the study includes 79 respondents selected through saturation sampling. All data obtained from the questionnaire distribution are deemed suitable and further analyzed using multiple linear regression, hypothesis testing (t-test and F-test). The results indicate that (1) Corporate Social Responsibility significantly and positively influences Sustainability Performance at The Patra Bali Resort & Villas. This suggests that an increase in Corporate Social Responsibility leads to an improvement in Sustainability Performance at The Patra Bali Resort & Villas. (2) Environmental Management Accounting significantly and positively affects Sustainability Performance at The Patra Bali Resort & Villas. This implies that better or increased Environmental Management Accounting results in an improved Sustainability Performance at The Patra Bali Resort & Villas.

Analisis penerapan akuntansi manajemen lingkungan pada perusahaan sub sektor kayu dan pengolahannya di Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) dan kesesuaiannya dengan Standard Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

Poor company environmental management requires an Environmental Management Accounting system as environmental control which is used to identify, assess, measure and present waste management costs from operational activities. This research aims to find out whether the application of environmental management accounting in the reporting of manufacturing companies in the wood and processing sub-sector is in accordance with global reporting initiative standards. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive approach, so it can be seen whether the environmental management accounting system and sustainability reports of manufacturing companies in the wood and processing sub-sector have been presented properly and correctly. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that 4 companies in the wood sub-sector manufacturing and processing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) are in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standard and only one company provides an internal failure environmental cost report.

Critical environmental management accounting practices influencing service delivery of growing cities in a developing economy: a review and conceptual framework

AbstractThe scope for environmental management accounting (EMA) has perpetually received attention in recent years, and it has become a pillar of sustainability in addressing environmental and service delivery challenges. Most scholars focused on EMA in a corporate context, limited attention has been given to local governments in available scholarly articles except for various initiatives by the United Nations to guide local governments in adopting and implementing sustainable environmental management practices. This has continued to affect the uptake of EMA in local governments, particularly in developing economies, as the question concerning the role of EMA practices (EMAPs) in environmental and service delivery remains unexplored. A systematic literature review (SLR) through the use of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to identify EMAPs and their role in promoting environmental and service delivery performance (SDP) in local governments was employed. Articles from Google Scholar and Scopus published between 2000 and 2023 were considered. The researchers identified and evaluated energy accounting, material flow accounting, water management accounting, carbon management accounting and biodiversity management accounting as effective EMAPs to address local governments’ environmental and service delivery challenges. Furthermore, a conceptual framework to integrate EMAPs with environmental improvement and service delivery plans was developed and has implications for policymakers, communities, government and environmental specialists. The lessons learned from the research are pertinent to developing sustainable cities in emerging economies and further expose the need for further research to consider accounting approaches from higher-income countries as benchmarks for future development of ecosystem accounting to assist local governments in managing environmental challenges.

Cost Reduction Strategy In Manufacturing Industries Empirical Evidence From Indonesia

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced manufacturing industries to be efficient in multiple fields. This study examines the effect of raw material management using Material Flow Cost Accounting and waste cost for Non-Product Output cost on implementing cost reduction strategies. Data was gathered by analyzing annual financial reports as well as sustainability reports. The study finds that organizations can reach efficiency by managing the cost of the raw materials using Material Flow Cost Accounting and Non-Product Output costs when implementing a cost reduction strategy. The research contributes to developing the concept of cost reduction through the Environmental Management Accounting approach, which is still rare in this field, in addition to the traditional method of cost accounting that organizations have carried out to achieve cost efficiency.

Pengaruh Family Control, Environmental Management Accounting, dan Profitabilitas Terhadap Nilai Perusahaan

In the last quarter of 2020, the capital market conditions cannot be impressive either. Many stocks have high liquidity and good prospects but have experienced a correction of -24.67% caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A view of investors in seeing whether managers are successful in managing the resources owned by the company, which is usually associated with stock prices, is called the company's value. This study's purpose is to determine of family control, environmental management accounting, and profitability on firm value. The objects used in this study are LQ45 index companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Based on several criteria in determining the sample, 17 company samples, or 85 data points. Analysis of research data using regression panel data using Eviews 12. The results indicate that family control, environmental management accounting, and profitability have a simultaneous effect on firm value. Meanwhile, family control and environmental management accounting do not have a positive effect on firm value, while the profitability variable has a significant positive effect on firm value.

Unveiling the link between environmental management accounting, energy efficiency, and accountability in state-owned enterprises: An integrated analysis using PLS-SEM and fsQCA

The rising importance of sustainability and accountability in organizations has prompted the exploration of innovative approaches to enhance environmental performance and energy efficiency (ENE). The purpose of this research is to examine the extent to which environmental management accounting (EMA) and ENE practices contribute to accountability within state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Bangladesh. This study employs both symmetrical (PLS-SEM) and asymmetrical (fsQCA) approaches. The study verifies internal consistency, reliability, validity, common method bias, and collinearity issues through measurement model analysis and conducts path analysis after testing model fitness in structural model analysis. Finally, the study uses fsQCA to conduct in-depth analyses of causal contributions from different conditions to a specific outcome of interest. The PLS-SEM analysis revealed significant positive relationships between EMA and ENE with transparency, responsibility, and answerability. These results indicate that organizations adopting EMA and ENE practices are more likely to exhibit higher levels of transparency, demonstrate greater responsibility towards environmental matters, and be more answerable to stakeholders for their accountability. Further, the study identified ENE as a mediator of EMA and accountability. Finally, the fsQCA analysis supported the importance of both EMA and ENE as necessary conditions for achieving accountability indicating the integration of EMA and ENE to foster transparency, responsibility, and answerability effectively. This study implies that by implementing EMA systems and focusing on energy-efficient operations, organizations can enhance transparency, responsibility, and answerability to stakeholders, fostering a positive image and reputation. Therefore, SOEs may consider integrating these practices into their overall sustainability strategies to maximize their impact on accountability and environmental performance.

Barriers to Implementation of Environmental Management Accounting in South African Small and Medium Enterprises for Sustainable Performance

The key aim of the study is to establish barriers to environmental management accounting (EMA) adoption by manufacturing small and medium enterprises (EMA) in Gauteng province, South Africa from an institutional theory standpoint. To attain the aim of the study 34 in-depth interviews were undertaken with manufacturing SME owners and managers on 34 SMEs. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyze interview transcripts and revealed that lack of government support, financial barriers, lack of incentives to adopt EMA, and absence of guidance to adopt EMA are acting as barriers of SMEs in South Africa from adopting EMA. As a result, the study proposes various incentives such as tax concessions and discounts on eco-materials to encourage SME EMA adoption. Also, the government should take center-stage in making available green training and amplifying awareness of environmental management within SMEs in South Africa. Overall, the study would help regulators and policymakers to align regulations and green strategies with factors that hinder EMA adoption in a ploy to overcome them.
