Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate how project alternatives studies are developed, identifying the main categories and challenges discussed in the literature and highlighting the legal requirements mandated in Brazil for their preparation. Theoretical Framework: This section presents the main concepts and theories that underpin the research. It highlights Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and alternatives study, both within the scope of new projects, providing a solid foundation for understanding the context of the investigation. Method: The study adopted a qualitative approach, beginning with the identification of alternative categories and the challenges of preparing the study of alternatives through a narrative literature review. Following this, an analysis of Resolution (Conama) No. 001/1986 was conducted to identify the Brazilian legal requirements for the preparation of alternatives studies in projects. Results and Discussion: The results reveal the main challenges in developing project alternatives studies in Brazil, highlighting that the way they are presented in Environmental Impact Statement (EISs) does not adhere to the recommended best practices of EIA. In the discussion, these results are contextualized based on the theoretical framework, emphasizing their implications and relationships. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this study offer reflections on how the results can influence the preparation of alternatives in EIAs and encourage comparative studies with legal documents from other countries, aiming for more consistent results. Originality/Value: This study encourages reflection on the conduct of project alternatives studies, highlighting its relevance by demonstrating the differences in application and the influences on the effectiveness of EIA.
