Cultural Guardianship in Tourism: Indigenous Communities' Quest for Economic Stability and Identity Preservation

Purpose: This research aims to comprehensively analyze the impacts of tourism on indigenous communities, exploring economic, cultural, social, and environmental dimensions. It also seeks to understand indigenous perspectives on tourism development and identify future research directions for more sustainable approaches. Methodology: The review employs a systematic approach, conducting exhaustive searches across electronic databases and manual searches in relevant literature. Selection criteria prioritize studies focusing on economic, cultural, social, or environmental effects of tourism on indigenous communities. Thematic organization synthesizes key findings from the literature. Findings: The review highlights tourism's potential benefits for indigenous communities, such as income generation and cultural revitalization, alongside challenges like cultural appropriation and environmental degradation. Indigenous perspectives emphasize cultural preservation and equitable participation in tourism decision-making. Originality: This study's originality lies in its comprehensive analysis of indigenous tourism impacts, integrating diverse perspectives and guiding future research directions. By synthesizing existing research and amplifying indigenous voices, it contributes to understanding the complex interactions between tourism development, indigenous cultures, and sustainability.

Local People’s Perception of Ecotourism: the Case of Salda Lake

The present research was carried out in the sample of Salda Lake in Turkey in order to determine the perception of local residents about cultural, economic and environmental effects of ecotourism and to identify the effect of these variables on their support for tourism development in the region. In the research, it was concluded that cultural, economic and environmental effects of ecotourism act as an antecedent of the support by local people residing around Salda Lake on tourism development in the region. In addition, the local people’s length of residence in the region creates a moderating effect in the relationship between cultural, economic and environmental effects of tourism and the residents’ support for tourism development. The research findings provide suggestions to tourism planners, destination management organizations (DMO) and academicians studying in the context of tourism literature.

Environmental effects of tourism and its seasonality on Mediterranean islands: the contribution of the Interreg MED BLUEISLANDS project to build up an approach towards sustainable tourism

The Mediterranean basin is amongst the world’s main tourist destination, and its islands are a major attraction, being sites of historical, cultural and naturalistic importance. This is beneficial for the local economies, but it may also represent a great burden on the coastal environment, where other human pressures are concentrated. The awareness of detrimental side effects of tourism together with the importance to take into account social and economic facets has led to the concept of sustainable tourism, which, however, represents a goal far from being attained. A good opportunity to promote sustainable tourism was provided by the Interreg MED BLUEISLANDS project, whose main aim was to identify, address and mitigate the effects of the seasonal variation of waste generated by tourism on Mediterranean islands. Here, we present the methodological framework of the project aimed at biomonitoring coastal seawater in highly touristic sites using macroalgae as valuable bioindicators of seawater quality and improving its status through the implementation and assessment of mitigation measures that included also the involvement of stakeholders. Outcomes of the project highlighted the effectiveness of such an integrated approach, confirming the importance of choosing proper indicators and tools that can support the development of management plans aiming to mitigate environmental impact and foster sustainable tourism.

Demographic characteristics and residents' attitude towards tourism development: A case of Kashmir region

This study investigates the attitudes oflocal residents' of the Kashmir region towards tourism development according to their demographic characteristics. A broader set of demographic variables has been used througha well‐structured questionnaire. The questionnaire received 650 valid responses from the households through a convenient sampling method. The robust analysis of responses by the respondents reveals that resident's attitudes could be beneficial for the development of tourismin any tourism potential region. Discussion: The study put forward some interesting results which are pivotal for the development of tourism in a region. The study shows that demographic characteristics of residents affectsignificantly on their perceptions regarding the economic, social and environmental effects of tourism in the Kashmir region.

Tourist-Host Interactions and Tourism Experiences: A Study of Tourism Experiences and Effects in Sikles, Nepal

It is necessary to create a positive interaction between host and tourist for achieving and maintaining sustainable tourism in a destination. The quality and frequency of interaction between tourist and resident contributes to tourists’ experience, perception of the visited destination, local socio-cultural and environmental status, and acceptance and tolerance of tourists by residents. The key objective of this study is to examine the international tourist experiences, interaction with residents, and the social, cultural and environmental effects of tourism in the host community of Sikles. The research was conducted among 50 international tourist visiting Sikles during January, 2019. The results shows that village tourism of Sikles is a phenomenon representing nature conservation, adventure, life style, experience and above all benefit to the local people. Foreign tourist visited Sikles for adventure-trekking, relaxes and rest and their expectations were fulfilled during their visit, and there prevails a jovial relationship between tourist and host with a broad spectrum of tourism experiences and impact on local community. However, tourism as a global phenomenon has brought both positive and negative impacts on economic, environmental and social lives which are crucial for leading changes and revitalization of local society, culture and economy of Sikles. Indigenous Gurung culture has become more differentiated and the forces of tourism are strong enough to influence every spheres of local life. But, the effervescent interaction between tourist and host, experiences, perspicacity of jovial relations, the budding social, cultural and environmental challenges has amplified the awareness of both tourist and host for sustainable eco-friendly tourism.

Perception and Attitudes of Residents Towards Impacts of Tourism: a research on environmentally sensitive region

Abstract: Tourism has a social, cultural, economic and environmental impact on destinations. The positive or negative perception of these effects by residents has great importance for the continuation of tourism activities in one region. The aim of this study is to determine the perception and attitude of local people towards tourism and tourism support who have a great interest in nature-based tourism and who demonstrate a great reaction to the projects they believe will harm the nature such as hydroelectric power plants projects, Cerattepe Project and Green Road Project. A total of 449 data from residents living in Arhavi, Borçka, Artvin (Center) and Hopa districts were analyzed in the survey. In the course of testing hypotheses, variables such as age group, marital status, education status, working status, survival time in Artvin and county living in Artvin was evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis H Test; the gender factor was evaluated by the Mann Whitney test and the correlation analysis was made to determine tourism support. As a result of these analyzes, significant differences were found between demographic factors and the perception of tourism effects and tourism support. In addition, it has been determined that the people living in Artvin find favorable the economic, social, cultural and environmental effects of tourism and they support tourism.

Social adaptation and climate mitigation through agrotourism: a case study of tourism in Mastatal, Costa Rica

ABSTRACTCosta Rica has shifted from a primarily agrarian economy to a service sector driven market with a strong focus on tourism. Rural communities, which have been supported by agricultural livelihoods, face dual stressors in the form of economic pressure from falling crop prices and the increasing impacts of climate change. While a significant amount of work has tracked the growth of ecotourism in Costa Rica, little research on the potentially multifaceted benefits of agrotourism exists. The economic, social, and environmental effects of tourism were explored through experiences of stakeholders in the village of Mastatal due to its high concentration of agrotourism offerings. Analysis of socio-economic data using the framework of change indicates that agrotourism is a viable and sustainable adaptation strategy to economic and climate change stressors. Assessing the economic and climate drivers of change, community-based agrotourism has enabled agency, increased local revenue, diversified jobs, increased food security and decreased the depletion of natural resources. The practices of intergenerational and business-to-business knowledge transfer have increased social capital, expanded economic opportunities and reduced competition in the community by reinforcing the concept of mutual mission and success.

People’s Perception of the Socio-Cultural and Environmental Impacts of Tourism in Malaysia: A Community-Reflective Study

Tourism is considered as the largest service-oriented industry of Malaysia, contributing enormously in economic terms to the GDP (gross domestic product) of the country, delivering employment to a sizeable section of the population, and fostering civic pride, social prestige, and international recognition as a desirable tourist destination. The tourism industry parades the beauty of Malaysian culture abroad as well as it enables people from outside to acquaint with a unique Muslim heritage amidst Malay modernity. Notwithstanding its many blessings, the tourism issue has sparked debate recently necessitating a discourse on a ‘rational framework for Malaysian tourism’ upon the premise that the benefits of tourism should not only be calculated in economic metrics, rather its demerits should be factored in as well. Under this circumstance, this paper empirically reflects the Malaysian community’s perception on the socio-cultural and environmental effects of tourism at the grassroots level.

The article reveals the multifaceted nature of tourism as a global scale social phenomenon. Tourism embraces nearly all aspects of our society. The main directions and tasks of its research by various sciences are disclosed. The necessary of integrating a number of subjects to study tourism is underlined. Tourism is the temporary, short-term movement of people to destinations outside the places where they normally live and work, which is induced by the natural and cultural diversity of the world. The essence of tourism as a travel define the context of geographical researches on tourism, in particular, there are researches on geography of tourist resources and flows, sustainable destinations management. Tourism as a social phenomenon has a variety of social-cultural impacts in all sociological dimensions. The main aspects of sociological researches of tourism have resulted in tourists’ typology and theory of “hosts and guests” relations. The modern mass international tourism is regarded in this article as a symbol of the postmodernism society. The economic and environmental effects of tourism are determined. As a key sector for economic development and job creation (for both men and women) throughout the world, tourism is one of the strongest drivers of global trade and prosperity. Tourism directly contributed US$2.3 trillion and 109 million jobs worldwide in 2016. It is revealed that tourism in many developing and least developed countries is the most viable and sustainable economic development option, and in some countries, the main source of foreign exchange earnings. Tourism impacts on the natural environment in various ways. Some forms of tourism can be extremely detrimental to ecologically sensitive areas, resulting in their degradation or destruction. The role of tourism in strengthening international economic relations, maintaining peace and stability in the world is also noted. It is determined that tourism can reduce prejudice among individuals, influences national institutions, structures and attitudes to create and sustain peaceful societies.

Adverse Environmental Effects of Tourism on Communities in the Ecuadorian Highlands Region

The objective of this study is to determine the adverse environmental effects of tourism activities on various heritage populations located in the sierra or Andean highlands region of Ecuador. The effects being studied have been classified into impacts on the physical, abiotic, biotic, socio-culture and economic environment. The automated method using RIAM (Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix) software was employed in this analysis, which required the preparation of a baseline study in the small communities evaluated. A social perception survey was conducted of local residents regarding tourism, assisted by International University of Ecuador students fulfilling practical coursework requirements. Based on the conclusions of the case studies, some strategic proposals and recommendations were developed that can be incorporated into sustainable tourism management plans in communities with natural and cultural heritage values.

Social, cultural and environmental impacts of tourism in Cyprus: the need for sustainable development

The objective of this paper is to determine how tourism development in Cyprus impacted its society, socially, culturally and environmentally. More specifically, this paper will determine how tourism development in Cyprus has affected social and cultural attitudes, identify reasons that contribute to this effect, how people view this development, and suggest alternative ways to avoid the negative socio-cultural and environmental effects of tourism. The methodology employed involved both desk and field research, including a literature review over the period 1960–2010, as well as, the use of a questionnaire administered by interviews, covering six geographical areas of Cyprus, representing all major touristic resorts. The overall analysis will attempt to reveal that the unprecedented tourism expansion is contributing to the observed change in the social, cultural and environmental character of Cyprus. It is the purpose of this paper to determine both the positive and negative socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism development in the Island State of Cyprus and suggest ways for sustainable tourism development. Recommendations, conclusions and suggestions for future work are reported at the end of this paper.

Navigating through tourism options: an island perspective

PurposeSustainable tourism demands a positivistic and holistic look at the true costs and benefits of the industry to host communities. To aid leaders in starting the process, the article proposes a tourism options navigation model looking at varying number of visitors, their average daily spend and leakages, on the socio‐economic, cultural and environmental landscape of island communities. The article aims to identify various tourism options, their expected effects and potential strategies to mitigating negative outcomes and to later apply the model to the case of the rural parish of St Thomas, Jamaica.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve the objectives outlined a comprehensive review of related literature was conducted. The researcher interviewed six of Jamaica's national tourism leaders and analyzed their responses.FindingsIt was posited that by employing strategies that impact the number of visitors to the area, their average daily spend and industry‐related economic import leakages, leaders can control the economic, social, cultural and environmental effects of tourism on communities but the process must begin with a clear articulation of the desired effects.Research limitations/implicationsThe model could be a useful decision‐making tool for leaders considering tourism as a developmental option or in analyzing the current state of their communities' tourism industry. It could also form the basis for a more objective look at tourism success by researchers.Originality/valueThe model is unique as it provides a single comprehensive look at the causes and effects of tourism and possible ways forward.

Tourist land use patterns and water demand: Evidence from the Western Mediterranean

Tourism represents a fundamental economic strategy for many cities, regions and countries around the world. Yet, it is also one of the main drivers of global environmental change and may have deleterious effects on a number of critical environmental vectors such as water. The development of tourism in Mediterranean region raises special concerns regarding water because of summer droughts and large concentrations of seasonal tourists. Nevertheless, tourist destinations are far from being homogeneous in their consumption of water and other resources. In this paper we argue that dense, high rise tourist centers tend to use comparatively less water than disperse, low density residential resorts, taking the case of Benidorm and the Alicante coast (Mediterranean Spain) as examples. Thus we seek to illustrate how water consumption may differ substantially depending on the predominant tourist land use patterns and their associated different densities (i.e., campsites, hotels, holiday resorts, apartments, residential homes, etc.). The observed different water consumption patterns reaffirm the heterogeneous nature and impacts of tourist activities and corroborate that density is a crucial variable for understanding the economic, social, and environmental effects of tourism.

Effects of Tourism development on the Local Poor People -- Case Study in Taibai Region China

In China, protected areas are one of the main destinations attracting tourists and homeland for many poor people living in and around them. Based on a case study, the paper focuses on correlation between tourism and poverty alleviation by tracing the cash flows to the local poor. It also reviews the social and environmental effects of tourism on local area. The case study is conducted in a group of protected areas in Qinling Mountain Region in Shaanxi, a western province in China. Qinling Mountain is one of the most important distribution zones for Giant Panda and some other endangered wildlife such as Golden Takin and Golden Monkey. The tourism development in the region is happening. Research indicates that there is 29.33%, of tourist expenditure is going to local households, directly or indirectly. Tourist spends US$7.11 (13.67%) in food and beverage, and US$6.39 (12.23%) in accommodation service, which are the greatest contributors to local households in terms of tourism benefits. Local households can get US$8.15 from food/beverage and accommodation sectors, taking 56.64% of total income from tourism. Generally, tourism development benefits all stakeholders. However, poor people get less benefit. The paper analyses the barriers for the poor to be involved in tourism development, and discusses the government roles, major issues in implementation of Sustainable Tourism-Eliminating Poverty (ST-EP) model. Antarctic tourism and environmental concerns

Increasing numbers of tourists are visiting the Antarctic. Totals from the past three seasons (1989–1990, 1990–1991, 1991–1992) were 2581, 4842, and 6495 respectively (Enzenbacher, 1992). Some environmental issues arising from Antarctic tourist activity include: wildlife tolerance, waste disposal, passenger education, tour operator management practices, personnel experience, frequency of visits and ship design. Current guidelines provide a practical approach to tourism, but do not address all issues arising from tourist activity. Antarctic Treaty Parties agreed to examine the question of a comprehensive regulation of tourist activities in the Antarctic Treaty Area and policies are under review. Some issues may prove difficult to resolve. Compliance with existing guidelines is to be encouraged, at least until more is known about the environmental effects of tourism. A management plan for tourism is needed along with more research on how tourism is conducted and the effects visits have on Antarctica's marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Cooperation between Treaty Parties and tour operators is important for the development of appropriate tourism regulations.
