Academic Entrepreneurial Support, Social Capital, and Green Entrepreneurial Intention: Does Psychological Capital Matter for Young Saudi Graduates?

The aim of this paper is to show the crucial role that universities play in preparing future green entrepreneurs, as well as the importance of social capital in ensuring the necessary resources and emotional support to develop a green entrepreneurial intention among young graduates. This paper also seeks to show as well the importance of psychological capital as a variable between the academic support offered by universities and the development of a green entrepreneurial intention, and between the social capital of entrepreneurs and the development of a green entrepreneurial intention. The results of this research show strong support for green entrepreneurship through university programs and courses, which clearly have a positive impact on the intention to create green projects. Similarly, the social capital of recent graduates provides not only the necessary resources, but also moral, emotional, and material support. Moreover, green entrepreneurial intentions depend on the positive psychological capital that can be developed in an individual, which is precisely the feeling of personal efficacy and optimism about success. Thus, psychological capital moderates both the relationship between academic support for entrepreneurship and the intention to create green projects, and also the relationship between the latter variable and entrepreneurial social capital.

The Influence of Cultural Capital of Guangdong Entrepreneurs on Enterprise Growth – Mediation of Innovation Behavior

Based on Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory, entrepreneur and enterprise growth theory, the purpose of this study is to deeply excavate the connotation of the concept of Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capita l by sorting out the literature related to cultural capital and economic development, entrepreneur, and enterprise growth, and deconstructs Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital. The constituent elements and functional functions of entrepreneurial cultural capital, analyze the similarities and differences between Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital and entrepreneurial human capital, entrepreneurial social capital, and entrepreneurial spirit, and explain Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital from the perspective of the mediating role of entrepreneurial innovation behavior. The research design consists of the mechanism of action on enterprise growth, and research hypotheses to be tested are put forward and empirically tested. The innovation of this research firstly re-examines the theory of entrepreneurial capital from the perspective of cultural capital, innovatively proposes the concept of Guangdong entrepreneurial cultural capital, and clarifies the connotation and functional value of Guangdong entrepreneurial cultural capital, which expands to a certain extent. The findings of this revealed the influencing factors of Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital and the influence path on enterprise growth, constructs a theoretical model of the influence of Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital on enterprise growth, and integrates Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital, entrepreneur innovation behavior and enterprise growth into the framework of the same research, and explores the impact and significance of entrepreneur innovation behavior on Guangdong entrepreneur cultural capital.

A springboard for entrepreneurs? Gig and sharing economy and entrepreneurship in Russia

PurposeThe growing popularity of gig and sharing economy changes not only consumption models but also employment patterns. This study aims to analyze the potential entrepreneurial nature of gig and sharing economy initiatives. As such, the authors compare the entrepreneurial intentions of gig and sharing economy workers to the general population. Further, the authors consider commonalities and differences in terms of the driving forces of both intentions to start-up and participation in gig and sharing economy, treating them as connected phenomena. Finally, the authors look into gig and sharing economy experience as a direct antecedent to entrepreneurial intentions formation.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical settings for this study are derived from the sample of 1,257 individuals who participated in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Adult Population Survey 2018 in Russia. Methodologically, the authors rely on analysis of variance-test and binary logistic regression analysis to test the study hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicate that entrepreneurial intentions of gig and sharing economy workers are significantly higher when compared to the general population. In terms of antecedents to gig and sharing economy participation and startup intentions, similar effects of age, entrepreneurial social capital, prior entrepreneurial exit and intrapreneurial experience were revealed, while perceived self-efficacy was associated only with engagement into digital platforms. Finally, gig and sharing economy experience showed significant and positive effect on entrepreneurial intentions formation.Originality/valueThis study represents a first substantive effort to systematize antecedents to gig and sharing economy participation through an entrepreneurship perspective. Beyond that, this research adds to the contextualization of entrepreneurship literature stream, further defining the mechanism of entrepreneurial intentions formation in empirical settings of an emerging market with a relatively low propensity of population to develop intentions to start-up.

Academic engagement with small business and entrepreneurship: Towards a landscape of practice

Academic engagement with small business and entrepreneurship was facilitated by the availability of European Union (EU) funding, which also stimulated the emergence of a small business and entrepreneurship (SBE) ‘community of practice’. Gradually, the SBE community developed into a ‘landscape of practice’ as small business research moved towards maturity. Furthermore, the SBE landscape of practice has coalesced around three core concepts: entrepreneurial learning, social networks and social capital. EU funding was the catalyst for many SBE academics in the UK to engage with practitioners involved with starting and managing their own businesses. The UK’s exit from the EU will inevitably mean that universities will no longer have access to EU Structural Funds. This has major implications for the UK SBE community’s engagement with practice as well as for entrepreneurs and business owners who have benefitted from a range of programmes designed to improve the performance of smaller firms.

Investigating the effects of offline and online social capital on tourism SME performance: A mixed-methods study of New Zealand entrepreneurs

Abstract Entrepreneurial social capital develops through the accrual of resources gained from an entrepreneur's social ties. These are integral to entrepreneurial success, enabling access to financial, marketing, and human resources, and innovation. Entrepreneurs increasingly manage their networks through online platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. However, there are major gaps in the extant empirical research concerning how online social capital is manifested, if this differs from an in-person context, and the effects ‘online’ and ‘offline’ social capital resources on tourism business success. This study adopts a mixed-method approach to examine tourism entrepreneur's behaviours in building offline and online social capital, and their nuanced effects on firm performance. The results found tourism entrepreneurs' networking activity manifests in three distinct configurations, Active Online Networkers, In-Person Networkers, and the Less Engaged. Each configuration demonstrated varying effects on expected business growth and performance with regards to number of employees, sales revenues, and net profit.

However, the theory of entrepreneurs' social capital is still not mature enough and needs to be re-examined and clarified through empirical research. Based on the empirical study of 173 private enterprises, this paper explores the moderating effect of entrepreneurship on the relationship between entrepreneurs' social capital and dynamic ability. It is found that the structural dimension of positive regulation of entrepreneurship has no moderating effect on the dynamic capabilities of technology and the market. Meanwhile, entrepreneurship plays a positive moderating role in the relationship dimension, in the cognitive dimension of entrepreneurs' social capital, in the technological dynamic capabilities and in the market dynamic capabilities of enterprise. Effective resource mobilisation of entrepreneurs' social capital is essential to maintain sustainable development of organisational dynamic capacity.

Micro-enterprise development initiatives and entrepreneurial competencies, innovativeness, and social capital in Malaysia

ABSTRACTThis article examines the effect of participation in development programmes designed for women micro-entrepreneurs on the development of entrepreneurial competencies, innovativeness, and social capital. The study employed a cross-sectional design and quasi-experimental approach, and collected data from 417 women micro-entrepreneurs in Malaysia. Findings reveal that the participants possess a significantly higher level of social capital, innovativeness, and entrepreneurial competencies. Development organisations should therefore focus on redesigning their policies and programmes to improve the breadth and depth of the development programmes that they offer, which ultimately lead to an improvement in the social-economic condition of low-income households in Malaysia.

Entrepreneurial Orientation and Social Capital in Pricing Strategy: a Case of Small Enterprises in East Java

<p>Penelitian ini mengkaji dampak orientasi kewirausahaan dan modal insani terhadap strategi penetapan harga perusahaan-perusahaan kecil di Jawa Timur. Metoda penelitian ini merupakan campuran antara analisis kuantitatif dan analisis kualitatif yang dipergunaan untuk menganalisis 168 perusahaan kecil. Temuan utama dari analisis kualitatif adalah perusahaan kecil cenderung menetapkan harga rendah untuk produk-produk mereka, diskon diberikan kepada pelanggan yang loyal, sistem penetapan harga transfer berdasarkan biaya produksi, adanya hubungan yang dekat antara pekerja dan pemilik dan antar pekerja, serta keagresifan bukanlah merupakan ciri perusahaan kecil. Temuan utama dari analisis kuantitatif ada tiga, yaitu (1) keagresifan dalam inovasi produk dan otonomi dalam pengambilan risiko merupakan dua ukuran orientasi kewirausahaan yang memengaruhi kemampuan perusahaan kecil di Jawa Timur dalam menetapkan harga produk baru; (2) baik agresifitas dalam inovasi dan otonomi dalam pengambilan risiko menentukan program pemasaran (salah satu ukuran penetapan harga) di perusahaanperusahaan kecil; (3) berbagi ide tentang tujuan merupakan faktor kunci dalam modal insani yang sangat memengaruhi komunikasi yang baik dengan pelanggan.</p>

Entrepreneurial social capital, cognitive orientation and new venture innovation

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the entrepreneur’s social capital and cognitive orientation in new venture innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe specific research questions are what impact the entrepreneur’s social capital has on his or her cognitive orientation in new product development; and to what extent and how social capital is dependent on the entrepreneur’s cognitive orientation in the new venture innovation performance. Data were collected in a survey conducted in multiple waves on a sample of approximately 1,400 new ventures in the USA. Social capital is measured by the position generator method. Cognitive orientation is measured by the causal mapping method. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicate that the entrepreneur’s strong social ties with the scientific community and technology-orientated cognition drive research collaborations and ultimately contribute to new venture innovation.Research limitations/implicationsPossible limitations are the low survey response rate, the spread of industries involved and respondents being the sole data source. Future research could use multiple data sources, increase the response rate by using other methods such as interviews and focus on a single industry or a set of related industries.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study can guide entrepreneurs to manage their social relationships actively. Entrepreneurs should proactively build strong ties with the scientific community at the start-up stage to improve their firms’ innovation performance. In the domain of public policy, initiatives such as encouragement of cooperation between universities and entrepreneurs may help to create new venture innovations and stimulate the regional economy.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the research on innovation and entrepreneurship by exploring the interrelationships among entrepreneurs’ social capital, cognitive orientation and new venture innovation. It found that entrepreneurs’ social capital at the start-up stage influences the characteristics of their cognitive orientation in new product development and ultimately new venture innovation. It also revealed how entrepreneurs think about new product success through cognitive mapping techniques.

Entrepreneurs' social capital and access to external resources: the effects of social skills

This research investigates the relationship between social competencies, entrepreneur's success and access to essential resources. Compared to previous studies, in this paper we add new findings concerning the mediating role of the social capital which enhances the effects of several social skills. Results indicate that the entrepreneurs' proficiency at persuasiveness, ingratiation and personal emotional intelligence is significantly related to their access to vital resources, especially venture capitalists' financing and useful information. These effects are mediated by the entrepreneurial social capital, which is based on an extensive network involving weak and non–redundant ties. The implications of these findings assist entrepreneurs in the Tunisian high–technology field in understanding the process by which social skills increase the level of social capital to gain access to paramount resources and success at the survival/development stage of the entrepreneurial process.

Start-ups and Local Entrepreneurial Social Capital in the Municipalities of Sweden

Westlund H., Larsson J. P. and Olsson A. R. Start-ups and local entrepreneurial social capital in the municipalities of Sweden, Regional Studies. This paper contains one of the first empirical attempts to investigate the influence of local entrepreneurial social capital (ESC) on start-up propensity. A unique database, including not only total start-ups but also data on start-ups divided into six sectors, is used to study the impact of ESC on start-ups per capita. The results support the hypothesis that social capital, measured both as (1) firm perception of local public attitudes to entrepreneurship and (2) the share of small businesses influences start-up propensity in Swedish municipalities. The findings also support previous results suggesting that social capital has a somewhat stronger influence in rural areas than in urban areas.

Consistent with the previous studies investigating the relationship between social competencies, entrepreneurs’ success and access to essential resources, this study respectively intends to add new findings concerning the mediating role of social networks which will enhance the effects of several social skills. Data were collected in a culture not explored in previous studies (the Tunisian context) and a qualitative research was conducted before carrying out a large scale survey, based on a quantitative PLS research. Results indicate that the high-tech entrepreneurs’ proficiency at social influence and emotion reappraisal has significant effects on their access to vital resources (i.e., venture capitalists’ financing, useful information and human resources). These effects are mediated by the entrepreneurial social capital, which is based on an extensive network involving weak and non-redundant ties. The implications of these findings assist Tunisian entrepreneurs, operating in the high-technology field, to understand the dynamic process by which social skills enlarge social networks to gain access to outside paramount resources and success.

Entrepreneurship in Deprived Urban Communities: The Case of Wales

The potential of entrepreneurial activity for rejuvenating deprived communities has been recognised by policymakers, especially with regard to reducing unemployment. Utilising data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) in conjunction with the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD), this study examines the relationship between early stage entrepreneurial activity and entrepreneurial attitudes and attributes, with the different domains of deprivation. It is found that those living in the more deprived urban areas of Wales have a much lower level of entrepreneurial activity. Most domains of deprivation have a negative influence on entrepreneurship, although a lack of services has a positive effect and makes individuals more likely to start a business without the requirement for an existing business community. However, the environment influence disappears as more individual characteristics are accounted for. This implies that whilst entrepreneurship is lower in deprived urban areas, the primary reason for this is the characteristics of those living in these areas, rather than any environmental effects. Controlling for the choice of location, an environmental effect is found to exist, negatively influencing entrepreneurial social capital. This casts doubt on the potential for enterprise to alleviate the deprivation of an area if success is likely to result in out-migration.

Mechanism Analysis of Coal Mine Entrepreneurial Social Capital

This paper first focuses on the concept of coal entrepreneurial social capital under the background of safety production; Then, analyzes the source of coal entrepreneurial social capital and their action mechanism in order to improve the performance of safety and economy; Finally, this article puts forward the possible application safety production fields and its prospect of entrepreneurial social capital in coal mine enterprise and safety in production.

Is entrepreneurship capital theory useful for international entrepreneurship research and practice? In this paper, we describe how international entrepreneurship research can benefit from including the concept of entrepreneurship capital at the individual level of analysis. We define entrepreneurship capital as a composite measure of entrepreneurial proclivity, human capital, and social capital of the entrepreneur. We present a conceptual framework that defines the relationship between entrepreneurship capital, the local and target business environment and international entrepreneurship. We argue for the moderating effect of the business environment between the relationship of entrepreneurship capital and international entrepreneurship. Moreover, we argue that entrepreneurship capital at the individual level will be an important predictor of survival rates of international entrepreneurship in benign and hostile targeting business environments when business firms explore the internationalization strategy. Finally, managerial implications and future research directions are discussed.   Key words: International entrepreneurship, capital, entrepreneurial proclivity, human capital, social capital.

The study by Juan Carlos Ayala Calvo and Guadalupe Manzano Garcia examines the effects of various factors on the success of established business owners. In their Established Business Owners’ Success: Influencing Factors, the authors consider the impact of human entrepreneurial capital and aspects of the characteristics of the firm. In our third article, African-American Entrepreneurial Venues and Social Capital, Phillip Cochrane uses social capital theory as the background, and tests the hypothesis that social capital is a determinant of whether AA entrepreneurs choose to function in the formal or informal economies. Lisa Servon, Anne Visser and Rob Fairlie focus on the capital needs of small enterprises. Their article, The Continuum of Capital for Small and Micro-Enterprises analyzes the amount of capital used by firms of different sizes and the sources of capital used by firms of different sizes to assess how capital needs and sources differ for those businesses with less than 20 employees. Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf’s article, Making Sense of Entrepreneurial Outcomes Measurements in the Literature: Suggestions for Researchers and Policymakers, addresses three questions: (1) How has entrepreneurial outcome been measured? (2) How can these measurements be categorized? (3) What measures are most appropriate and when? The author provides us with an inventory of existing measures and presents two frameworks through which to understand how they can be organized.
