Students’ Entrepreneurial Intention and Its Influencing Factors: A Systematic Literature Review

Many researchers have studied the factors that impact on students’ entrepreneurial intention; however, findings are conflicting. The present study attempts, through an extensive review of the literature, to provide a holistic view and deeper knowledge of the most significant factors that influence university students’ decisions to be self-employed or to start a business. A systematic review as well as a bibliometric analysis of the literature was implemented, using a three-step literature mapping protocol to search, select, evaluate, and validate the literature by examining and analyzing numerous papers from the scientific community. The process ended up with 677 papers, from which the forty-three most cited were used as our research sample. Findings revealed that there are four primary categories of factors: the contextual factors, such as the economic, social, and political environment, the motivational factors, such as individuals’ personal needs, personality traits, and characteristics, and the factors related with the personal background of individuals such as family, education, and peers. We also examined the countries with the maximum number of papers on university students’ entrepreneurial intentions. These findings can be useful for policy makers and educators and will serve as a basis for future research, while they also contribute to the literature by highlighting the factors that most affect the entrepreneurial intention of university students.

Exploring the Association between Entrepreneurial Intentions and Personality Traits in University Students of Punjab: Emotional Intelligence as a Moderator

Interest in entrepreneurial intention has significantly increased during the last few decades. Understanding the minds, behaviour, and personality profile of individuals who commence their ventures can help our nation's economy flourish. The motivation behind this study is to investigate the association between Big Five personality traits and the Entrepreneurial Intentions of university students of Punjab and to investigate whether the association between these traits and entrepreneurial intentions is moderated by Emotional Intelligence. Data collection was done from 170 university students through a survey using the Convenience sampling method. The outcomes obtained by correlation-regression analysis through SPSS software show that Openness, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion positively and significantly influenced Entrepreneurial Intentions. Also, Emotional Intelligence as a moderator significantly strengthened the relationships between these dimensions and entrepreneurial intentions which was done using the Cohen, Cohen, West, and Aiken’s approach. This work advocates that some measures should be taken to enhance the personality traits of the students of Punjab as well as encourage them towards entrepreneurship so that they can lay the foundation for global success stories. Educators should create programs for personality development that will assist pupils in developing the kind of personalities that are ideal for becoming entrepreneurs.

Research on the Construction of College Students’ Employment and Entrepreneurship Guidance Course System under the Background of “Internet+”

Abstract With the arrival of the “Internet Plus” era, college students are facing new challenges of Employment and entrepreneurship. This study aims to explore an effective guidance course system for Employment and entrepreneurship to meet the current social development needs and enhance students’ entrepreneurial ability and employment competitiveness. Through data mining decision tree algorithm, college students’ employment and entrepreneurship situation and their influencing factors were analyzed to establish an effective guidance course system. It was found that factors such as gender, specialty category, and entrepreneurial experience significantly affect students’ entrepreneurial intention. The results of the decision tree analysis show that factors such as family self-employment situation, entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurship are closely related to the entrepreneurial intention of college students. Based on this, strategies such as building innovation and entrepreneurship simulation and rehearsal carriers, broadening practical teaching bases, and constructing supportive entrepreneurial entity projects are proposed to promote the enhancement of college students’ entrepreneurial ability and the adaptability of the job market.

IMPACT OF SELF -EFFICACY ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION OF UNIVERSITY GRADUATES IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

This study examines the impact of self-efficacy on the entrepreneurial intentions of university graduates in Ogun State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to: determine the impact of vicarious experience and social persuasion on entrepreneurial intention. The study was exploratory and used cross-sectional analysis that allows data from the population using a survey research design. The study population comprises 71,173 university undergraduates in the three senatorial districts in Ogun State, Nigeria, during the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions. The study collected data by distributing 398 questionnaires to university students in Ogun State, Nigeria, but analysed 318 questionnaires retrieved and suitable for this study. The data analysis encompassed the utilisation of both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study indicate that vicarious experience (R = 0.398, R2 =0.158, P < 0.05), and social persuasion (R = 0.279, R2 =0.078, P < 0.05) exert a statistically significant and positive influence on the entrepreneurial intentions of university students. The study concluded that there is a statistically significant association between self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intentions among university students in Ogun State, Nigeria. This study enhances the existing knowledge by elucidating the specific elements of vicarious experience and social persuasion as major factors in the connection between self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intentions among university graduates. The study recommended that policymakers and educators should promote positive role models, provide opportunities for observation and learning, and create a supportive environment for entrepreneurship to encourage more university graduates to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.

Entrepreneurship is all about risk taking, initiative, independence and creativeness. Entrepreneurs are known for creating new jobs by opening new businesses which ultimately becomes a base for the boost of economy. Entrepreneurship means creation and implementation of new innovative ideas. This can only be done if one has the passion, energy and vision to turn the idea of change into reality by bring the solutions to those problems which are not solved yet. Any creative person can become an entrepreneur. In this paper we are trying to analyze the relation between the family background and entrepreneurial intention of university students of Lahore. We have gathered the information regarding the family background of students and their intentions to start a business, trying to conclude the relationship between them. For this purpose, 250 questionnaires were filled from students of different universities of Lahore.

Factors affecting entrepreneurial intentions among students in higher education institutions

PurposeThis paper investigates the factors affecting individual dispositions toward intentions. Specifically, this study aims to investigate the effects of emotional intelligence, entrepreneurial motivation and creativity on the entrepreneurial intentions of university students in Jordan.Design/methodology/approachThe data were gathered through self-administered questionnaires from a sample of 745 university students in Jordan. The hypotheses were tested using partial least squares (PLS) analysis.FindingsThe results indicate a robust relationship between entrepreneurial motivation and creativity and entrepreneurial intention. However, an insignificant relationship was found between emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention. The findings of this study reveal that both creativity and emotional intelligence exert a significant and positive indirect effect on entrepreneurial intentions through the mediation of entrepreneurial motivation.Practical implicationsThis work suggests that university administrators should consider the significant roles that emotional intelligence, entrepreneurial motivation and creativity play in shaping the entrepreneurial intentions of university students.Originality/valueWhile there is limited existing research on this matter within the Middle Eastern context, especially in Jordan, this study aims to address this gap in the Jordanian entrepreneurial literature. As the first of its kind conducted within Jordanian universities, this study contributes significantly to the understanding of entrepreneurial dynamics in the region. Using the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, this study evaluates emotional intelligence in Jordan. The results contribute to social psychology literature and suggest actionable government measures, integrated into education systems, to encourage entrepreneurial paths for students and alleviate graduate unemployment.

Research on Entrepreneurial Intention of College Students Under the Background of Platform Economy

The paper reviews the influence of platform economy on the entrepreneurial intention of college students in recent years, and summarizes the factors and mechanisms that affect the entrepreneurial intention of college students under the background of platform economy. Based on the technology acceptance model and the theory of planned behavior, many studies suggest that perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control may affect college students' entrepreneurial intention. To encourage college students to participate in platform economy entrepreneurship, educators and policymakers need to pay attention to improving college students' perception of the ease and usefulness of starting a business using digital platforms, cultivating their positive entrepreneurial attitudes, and improving their perceived behavioral control. This may be achieved by providing entrepreneurship education and training, as well as creating an environment that encourages self-drive and self-control.

Entrepreneurial Intention of University Students under the Perspective of the Theory of Planned Behaviour: Integrative Literature Review

(1) Background: In a competitive and globalised world, retaining immigrants in entrepreneurial universities is an underutilised asset, one that allows economic development to be better enabled. Thus, studying the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of students enables the development of practices and public policies. (2) Purpose: Although the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) is not a recent approach, its theoretical framework was considered consistent to understand the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of university students, considering the geographic region of origin. (3) Methods: This article is an integrative literature review. The database consulted was the Web of Science. Works available in full until 2022 that addressed at least two TPB antecedents were included. Works that were not articles that included university students were excluded. (4) Results: The articles analysed confirm the predictive power of the theory. However, more standardised studies need to address the role of variables. The African results showed a greater entrepreneurial attitude; Americans and Asians perceived greater behavioural control; and the subjective norm was stronger among Africans. (5) Originality: This work contributes to fomenting attention to this field, providing the development of theories, and suggesting avenues for future research. The authors did not find a literature review on the subject.

Entrepreneurial Intentions: A Comparative Study of African and European University Economics Students

ABSTRACT Businesses started by well-educated people are considered a driving force for a country’s development. Many studies have examined the entrepreneurial intentions of university students in different countries. However, only a few studies have investigated the differences in such intentions between students in developed and developing countries, especially African countries. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether African university economics students are interested in becoming entrepreneurs compared to their counterparts from developed countries in the EU. We compared students’ intentions to become entrepreneurs using a large quantitative dataset obtained from university students from the 2018 GUESSS international survey. Testing four hypotheses, we found a statistically significant difference in entrepreneurial intentions between EU and African students. In general, we can say that African students have a more positive attitude toward their own entrepreneurship than their fellow EU students.

Factors determining the entrepreneurial intentions among Chinese university students: the moderating impact of student internship motivation

The development of entrepreneurship spirit among young people is instrumental in empowering and invigorating them to take up entrepreneurial activities and become entrepreneurs. Understanding the psychological motivations (behavioral intentions) for people to become entrepreneurs is essential for the development of requisite policy and for creating a sustainable environment for entrepreneurs to grow and survive. Grounded on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this paper examines the factors driving the entrepreneurial intentions of students by specifically examining how student internship motivations (SIM) moderate the impact of entrepreneurial attitude (EA), subjective norms (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), entrepreneurial education (EE), and entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) on college students’ entrepreneurial intentions (SEI). A total of 478 valid responses gathered via a self-administered questionnaire from Chinese College students were analyzed with SPSS-26 by applying multiple linear regression analysis, moderation, and slope analysis. Results indicate that EA, SN, PBC, EE, and ESE positively influence college SEI. Most importantly, the moderation and slope analysis indicate that SIM significantly but negatively moderates the impact of EA, SN, PBC, and ESE on the entrepreneurial intentions of college students. SIM, however, failed to significantly influence the effect of EE on the SEI. The inferences (both academic and practical) of these discoveries for the development of sustainable entrepreneurial and internship programs are deliberated.

Entrepreneurial intention of university students: A moderated approach using entrepreneurship education

This study aims to examine the impact of students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy on their opportunity recognition capability after their exposure to classroom-based entrepreneurship education, leading to the development of intention to undertake an entrepreneurial activity. A detailed questionnaire was used to collect data from 351 students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Results confirm that the student’s entrepreneurial self-efficacy positively influences their intention to undertake an entrepreneurial activity directly and indirectly via their opportunity recognition capability. Also, entrepreneurship education significantly moderates the link between students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy and opportunity recognition capability. These results have practical implications for universities and policymakers, as universities that are not providing entrepreneurship education can adopt the same module of classroom education. Also, policymakers can frame policies directing institutions to start similar kinds of entrepreneurship education programs, even at the intermediate level, particularly in lower-middle-income countries.

"Entrepreneurship" from the lens of enlightenment: Impacts of religiosity and spiritual intelligence on social entrepreneurial intentions.

Despite an escalated gravity of interest in exploring factors that shape university students' social entrepreneurial intentions, there are significant gaps in our understanding of this phenomenon. The current study examines the boundary effects of religiosity and spiritual intelligence to predict university students' social entrepreneurial intentions. The authors collected the data from university students in their final years in multiple waves and employed SmartPLS (v 4.0) for data analysis. Our findings indicate that religiosity can affect social entrepreneurial intentions through two paths: intrinsic motivation mediates the association between intrinsic religiosity and social entrepreneurial intentions, and extrinsic motivation mediates the relationship between extrinsic religiosity and social entrepreneurial intentions. Further, spiritual intelligence moderates the relationship between intrinsic religiosity and social entrepreneurial intentions, mediated by intrinsic motivation such that at high levels of spiritual intelligence the association is more potent and vice versa. This is the first study that examines the boundary conditions of social entrepreneurial intentions of university students by employing the lens of religiosity and spirituality. The paper presents substantial theoretical and practical implications.

The Influence of Science and Technology Innovation Perception Education on Entrepreneurial Intention of College Students

The current employment situation is grim, and the era of science and technology is conducive to college students providing new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. The inclusion of entrepreneurship education in college courses can open up more employment opportunities for students. Therefore, the educational environment is crucial for students’ employment choices. This paper conducted a questionnaire survey on 582 college students from nine universities in Fujian Province, China, to develop a relationship model between science and technology innovation perception, education, and entrepreneurial intention. The results show that: 1. Science and technology innovation perception education has been proven to have a direct positive influence on college students’ entrepreneurial intention; 2. Undergraduates work value orientation (including career orientation, mission orientation, and livelihood orientation) significantly affects entrepreneurial self-efficacy and thus entrepreneurial intention; and 3. Both work value orientation and entrepreneurial selfefficacy have a direct influence on entrepreneurial intention, but the influence of entrepreneurial self-efficacy is greater than that of work value orientation. Therefore, enhancing college students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy is the main way to improve entrepreneurial intention. Based on this, to improve the entrepreneurial intention of college students, colleges and universities should strengthen science and technology innovation perception education, do a good job in student employment guidance, improve students’ self-efficacy, meet undergraduates’ diverse employment needs, and provide more entrepreneurship resources to undergraduates.

The Effect of Entrepreneurship Education on University Students’ Entrepreneurial Intention

This research was conducted to determine the effect of entrepreneurship education on the entrepreneurial intentions of university students, both directly and through the Theory of Planned Behavior component. The variables in the study include entrepreneurship education, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and intentions. The research begins with the preparation of a questionnaire to measure all variables. The population consists of Faculty of Economics and Business Ahmad Dahlan University undergraduate students who have taken entrepreneurship courses, with 243 respondents. The method used is multiple linear regression and path analysis. The tests carried out included reliability and validity tests; regression coefficient calculations; and testing the significance of the influence of each variable, both directly and indirectly. The study results showed that entrepreneurship education has a positive and significant direct effect on entrepreneurial intentions and indirectly affects entrepreneurial intentions through perceived behavioral control variables. Thus, the quality of learning needs to be improved so that students' entrepreneurial intentions also increase.

THE EFFECTS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND SELF-EFFICACY ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION: A STUDY ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention are significant factors that shape entrepreneurs’ success and performance. In this study, the connection between these concepts was examined, and additionally, the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention was analyzed. Within the scope of the research, data were collected through a questionnaire method from a total of 375 undergraduate students studying in different departments and classes at Gebze Technical University. In addition to demographic and descriptive questions, scales derived from the literature were utilized in the created questionnaire. The SPSS software package was employed for the analysis of the collected data (reliability, factor, regression). The findings demonstrated that both emotional intelligence and self-efficacy have a positive impact on entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, the study revealed that self-efficacy plays a mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention. This study aims to emphasize the significance of emotional intelligence and self-efficacy in shaping the entrepreneurial intention of university students and to contribute to the relevant literature in the field.

Entrepreneurial Intentions in Crisis: Shaping Through the Triad of Influence - Government, Education, and Environment

Purpose: The COVID-19 outbreak’s effect on the world has been unparalleled, its consequences generated unpredictable behavioral changes in individuals’ perceptions, which can affect entrepreneurial activities. This paper aims to analyze the motivating factors, challenges, and youths' perspectives regarding factors that affect their intention to engage in entrepreneurial activities in Lebanon, a country dealing with one of the worst global economic and financial crises in the middle of the nineteenth century. Design/methodology/approach: Data were gathered from a valid sample of 992 university students as part of a quantitative approach to data collection that covered seven different districts in Lebanon. In order to analyze the contextual elements in connection to students’ intention to engage in entrepreneurial activity using planned behavior theory, a structural equation modelling was used. Findings: The results provide evidence that three experiences—attitude towards entrepreneurship, perceived behavioral control, and social norms— have a direct impact on the likelihood of future entrepreneurial initiatives. Nevertheless, the desire of students to be entrepreneur was not directly impacted by the support provided from the university, government and business environment. Theoretical and Practical Implications: Theoretical and practical implications can be made from this study’s results. Theoretically this study adds to the literature by examining different factors that may have an impact on enterpreneurial intention of university students during time of crisis. Practically, results found provide suggestions to policymakers to reassess the current policies and programs in order to encourage positive intentions towards entrepreneurship among Lebanese university students. Originality/ value: The examination of factors affecting entrepreneurial intention of university students in Lebanon is a first of its kind, which could be implied for further investigation.
