K-Positivity and Schmidt number under orthogonal group symmetries

In this paper, we present a new application of group theory to develop a systematical approach to efficiently compute the Schmidt numbers. The Schmidt number is a natural quantification of entanglement in quantum information theory, but computing its exact value is generally a challenging task even for very concrete examples. We exhibit a complete characterization of all orthogonally covariant k-positive maps. This result generalizes earlier results by Tomiyama (Linear Algebra Appl 69:169–177, 1985). Furthermore, we optimize duality relations between k-positivity and Schmidt numbers under group symmetries. This new approach enables us to transfer the results of k-positivity to the computation of the Schmidt numbers of all orthogonally invariant quantum states.

Entanglement quantification via weak measurements assisted by deep learning

Entanglement has been recognized as being crucial when implementing various quantum information tasks. Nevertheless, quantifying entanglement for an unknown quantum state requires nonphysical operations or post-processing measurement data. For example, evaluation methods via quantum state tomography require vast amounts of measurement data and likely estimation. Although a direct entanglement determination has been reported for the unknown pure state, it is still tricky for the mixed state. In this work, assisted by weak measurement and deep learning technology, we directly detect the entanglement (namely, the concurrence) of a class of two-photon polarization-entangled mixed states both theoretically and experimentally according to the local photon spatial distributions after weak measurement. In this way, the number of projective bases is much smaller than that required in quantum state tomography.

Qudit Concurrence and Monogamy

It is well known that entanglement is one of the distinctive aspects of the quantum world. The measurement and quantification of entanglement is one of the major problems in understanding and applying this resource. This research aims to investigate entanglement measures and their properties in high-dimensional systems. One such property is entanglement monogamy, viz. quantum correlations are not shareable, different from the classical ones. On the other hand, the study of entanglement depends on the definitions of its measures. Here we examine the applicability of concurrence, an entanglement measure known for its effectiveness in the analysis of qubit entanglement. While the entanglement of two-level systems or qubits is widely understood, its extension to higher dimensions remains challenging. Our research establishes equivalence between different concurrence definitions for bipartite qubit pure states and extends them to qudits. Subsequently, we investigate the monogamous relations of these measurements to explore their characteristics. This approach might enhance our comprehension of quantum traits in qudit systems and advance our understanding of entanglement in broader quantum contexts.

Symmetric hypergraph states: entanglement quantification and robust Bell nonlocality

Abstract Quantum hypergraph states are the natural generalization of graph states. Here we investigate and analytically quantify entanglement and nonlocality for large classes of quantum hypergraph states. More specifically, we connect the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric hypergraphs to their local Pauli stabilizers. As a result we recognize the resemblance between symmetric graph states and symmetric hypergraph states. This explains both the exponentially increasing violation of local realism for infinitely many classes of hypergraph states and robustness towards particle loss.

Tetrahedron genuine entanglement measure of four-qubit systems

Quantifying genuine entanglement is a key task in quantum information theory. We study the quantification of genuine multipartite entanglement for four-qubit systems. Based on the concurrence of nine different classes of four-qubit states, with each class being closed under stochastic local operation and classical communication, we construct a concurrence tetrahedron. Proper genuine four-qubit entanglement measure is presented by using the volume of the concurrence tetrahedron. For non genuine entangled pure states, the four-qubit entanglement measure classifies the bi-separable entanglement. We show that the concurrence tetrahedron based measure of genuine four-qubit entanglement is not equivalent to the genuine four-partite entanglement concurrence. We illustrate the advantages of the concurrence tetrahedron by detailed examples.

Classification and quantification of entanglement through wedge product and geometry

The wedge product of post-measurement vectors of a two-qubit state gives rise to a parallelogram, whose ‘area’ has been shown to be equivalent to the generalized I-concurrence measure of entanglement. In multi-qudit systems, the wedge product of post-measurement vectors naturally leads to a higher dimensional parallelepiped which yields a modified faithful entanglement measure. Our new measure fine grains the entanglement monotone, wherein different entangled classes manifest with different geometries. We present a complete analysis of the bipartite qutrit case considering all possible geometric structures where three entanglement classes of pure bipartite qutrit states can be identified with different geometries of post-measurement vectors: three planar vectors; three mutually orthogonal vectors; and three vectors that are neither planar and not all of them are mutually orthogonal. It is further demonstrated that the geometric condition of area and volume maximization naturally leads to the maximization of entanglement. The wedge product approach uncovers an inherent geometry of entanglement and is found to be very useful for the characterization and quantification of entanglement in higher dimensional systems.

Quantifying high-dimensional spatial entanglement with a single-photon-sensitive time-stamping camera.

High-dimensional entanglement is a promising resource for quantum technologies. Being able to certify it for any quantum state is essential. However, to date, experimental entanglement certification methods are imperfect and leave some loopholes open. Using a single-photon-sensitive time-stamping camera, we quantify high-dimensional spatial entanglement by collecting all output modes and without background subtraction, two critical steps on the route toward assumptions-free entanglement certification. We show position-momentum Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations and quantify the entanglement of formation of our source to be larger than 2.8 along both transverse spatial axes, indicating a dimension higher than 14. Our work overcomes important challenges in photonic entanglement quantification and paves the way toward the development of practical quantum information processing protocols based on high-dimensional entanglement.

Is There a Finite Complete Set of Monotones in Any Quantum Resource Theory?

Entanglement quantification aims to assess the value of quantum states for quantum information processing tasks. A closely related problem is state convertibility, asking whether two remote parties can convert a shared quantum state into another one without exchanging quantum particles. Here, we explore this connection for quantum entanglement and for general quantum resource theories. For any quantum resource theory which contains resource-free pure states, we show that there does not exist a finite set of resource monotones which completely determines all state transformations. We discuss how these limitations can be surpassed, if discontinuous or infinite sets of monotones are considered, or by using quantum catalysis. We also discuss the structure of theories which are described by a single resource monotone and show equivalence with totally ordered resource theories. These are theories where a free transformation exists for any pair of quantum states. We show that totally ordered theories allow for free transformations between all pure states. For single-qubit systems, we provide a full characterization of state transformations for any totally ordered resource theory.

Scalable Bell inequalities for graph states of arbitrary prime local dimension and self-testing

Bell nonlocality—the existence of quantum correlations that cannot be explained by classical means—is certainly one of the most striking features of quantum mechanics. Its range of applications in device-independent protocols is constantly growing. Many relevant quantum features can be inferred from violations of Bell inequalities, including entanglement detection and quantification, and state certification applicable to systems of arbitrary number of particles. A complete characterisation of nonlocal correlations for many-body systems is, however, a computationally intractable problem. Even if one restricts the analysis to specific classes of states, no general method to tailor Bell inequalities to be violated by a given state is known. In this work we provide a general construction of Bell expressions tailored to the graph states of any prime local dimension. These form a broad class of multipartite quantum states that have many applications in quantum information, including quantum error correction. We analytically determine their maximal quantum values, a number of high relevance for device-independent applications of Bell inequalities. Importantly, the number of expectation values to determine in order to test the violation of our inequalities scales only linearly with the system size, which we expect to be the optimal scaling one can hope for in this case. Finally, we show that these inequalities can be used for self-testing of multi-qutrit graph states such as the well-known four-qutrit absolutely maximally entangled state AME(4,3).

Entanglement meter: estimation of entanglement with single copy in interferometer

Efficient certification and quantification of high dimensional entanglement of composite systems are challenging both theoretically as well as experimentally. Here, we demonstrate how to measure the linear entropy, negativity and the Schmidt number of bipartite systems from the visibility of Mach–Zehnder interferometer using single copies of the quantum state. Our result shows that for any two qubit pure bipartite state, the interference visibility is a direct measure of entanglement. We also propose how to measure the mutual predictability experimentally from the intensity patterns of the interferometric set-up without having to resort to local measurements of mutually unbiased bases. Furthermore, we show that the entanglement witness operator can be measured in a interference setup and the phase shift is sensitive to the separable or entangled nature of the state. Our proposal bring out the power of Interferometric set-up in entanglement detection of pure and several mixed states which paves the way towards design of entanglement meter.

Bounds on the breaking time for entanglement-breaking channels

Entanglement-breaking channels are quantum channels transforming entangled states to separable states. Despite a detailed discussion of their operational structure, to be found in the literature, studies on dynamical characteristics of this type of maps are yet limited. We consider one of the basic questions: for Lindblad-type dynamics, when does a given channel break entanglement? We discuss the finite-dimensional case where the quantification of entanglement via entanglement witnesses is utilized. For the general setup, we use the method of quantum speed limit to derive lower bounds on entanglement breaking times in terms of an input state, the dynamical map and the witness operator. Then, with a particular choice of the input state and the entanglement witness, the bounds for the breaking time are turned to solely reflect the characteristics of the dynamics.

Detecting Entanglement in Quantum Many-Body Systems via Permutation Moments.

Multipartite entanglement plays an essential role in both quantum information science and many-body physics. Because of the exponentially large dimension and complex geometric structure of the state space, the detection of entanglement in many-body systems is extremely challenging in reality. Conventional means, like entanglement witness and entropy criterion, either highly depend on the prior knowledge of the studied systems or the detection capability is relatively weak. In this Letter, we propose a framework for designing multipartite entanglement criteria based on permutation moments, which have an effective implementation with either the generalized control-swap quantum circuits or the random unitary techniques. As an example, in the bipartite scenario, we develop an entanglement criterion that can detect bound entanglement and show strong detection capability in the multiqubit Ising model with a long-range XY Hamiltonian. In the multipartite case, the permutation-moment-based criteria can detect entangled states that are not detectable by any criteria extended from the bipartite case. Our framework also shows potential in entanglement quantification and entanglement structure detection.

Concurrence triangle induced genuine multipartite entanglement measure

We study the quantification of genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) for general multipartite states. A set of inequalities satisfied by the entanglement of N-partite pure states is derived by exploiting the restrictions on entanglement distributions, showing that the bipartite entanglement between each part and its remaining ones cannot exceed the sum of the other partners with their remaining ones. Then a series of triangles, named concurrence triangles, are established corresponding to these inequalities. Proper genuine multipartite entanglement measures are thus constructed by using the geometric mean area of these concurrence triangles, which are non-increasing under local operation and classical communication. The GME measures classify which parts are separable or entangled with the rest ones for non genuine entangled pure states. The GME measures for mixed states are given via the convex roof construction, and a witness to detect the GME of multipartite mixed states is presented by an approach based on state purifications. Detailed examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our GME measures.

Structured negativity: A physically realizable measure of entanglement based on structural physical approximation

Quantification of entanglement is one of the most important problem in quantum information theory. In this work, we will study this problem by defining a physically realizable measure of entanglement for any arbitrary dimensional bipartite system ρ, which we named as structured negativity (NS(ρ)). We have shown that the introduced measure satisfies the properties of a valid entanglement monotone. We also have established an inequality that relate negativity and the structured negativity. For d⊗d dimensional state, we conjecture from the result obtained in this work that negativity coincide with the structured negativity when the number of negative eigenvalues of the partially transposed matrix is equal to d(d−1)2. Moreover, we proved that the structured negativity is not only implementable in the laboratory but also a better measure of entanglement in comparison to negativity. In few cases, we obtain that structure negativity gives better result than the lower bound of the concurrence obtained by Chen et al. (2005).

Entanglement quantification enhanced by dark count correction

In this paper, we propose a method of dark count correction in quantum state tomography of entangled photon pairs. The framework is based on a linear model of dark counts, which is imposed on the measurement formalism. The method is tested on empirical data derived from an experiment on polarization-entangled photons. We demonstrate that the numerical approach to dark count correction guarantees more reliable state reconstruction compared with standard estimation. Most importantly, however, the conceptually simple theoretical approach proves to be more efficient at entanglement quantification than experimental techniques.

Specifying nonlocality of a pure bipartite state and analytical relations between measures for bipartite nonlocality and entanglement

For a multipartite quantum state, the maximal violation of all Bell inequalities constitutes a measure of its nonlocality (Loubenets 2012 J. Math. Phys. 53, 022201). In the present article, for the maximal violation of Bell inequalities by a pure bipartite state, possibly infinite-dimensional, we derive a new upper bound expressed in terms of the Schmidt coefficients of this state. This new upper bound allows us also to specify general analytical relations between the maximal violation of Bell inequalities by a bipartite quantum state, pure or mixed, and such entanglement measures for this state as ‘negativity’ and ‘concurrence’. To our knowledge, no any general analytical relations between measures for bipartite nonlocality and entanglement have been reported in the literature though, for a general bipartite state, specifically such relations are important for the entanglement certification and quantification scenarios. As an example, we apply our new results to finding upper bounds on nonlocality of bipartite coherent states intensively discussed last years in the literature in view of their experimental implementations.

Entanglement quantification from collective measurements processed by machine learning

This paper investigates how to reduce the number of measurement configurations needed for sufficiently precise entanglement quantification. Instead of analytical formulae, we employ artificial neural networks to predict the amount of entanglement in a quantum state based on results of collective measurements (simultaneous measurements on multiple instances of the investigated state). We consider collective measurement limited to two copies of the investigated state. This approach allows us to explore the precision of entanglement quantification as a function of measurement configurations in a relevant scenario for practical quantum communications. For the purpose of our research, we consider general two-qubit states and their negativity as entanglement quantifier. We outline the benefits of this approach in future quantum communication networks.

Quantum tomography of three-qubit generalized Werner states

In this paper, we introduce a numerical framework for quantum tomography and entanglement quantification of three-qubit generalized Werner states. The scheme involves the single-qubit symmetric, informationally complete, positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM), which is then generalized to perform three-qubit measurements. We introduce random errors into the scheme by imposing the Poisson noise on the measured photon counts. The precision of state estimation is quantified and presented on graphs. As a special case, we compare the efficiency of the framework for the pure three-qubit generalized Werner state and the W state. The reconstructed states are presented graphically and discussed.

Detecting and quantifying entanglement on near-term quantum devices

Quantum entanglement is a key resource in quantum technology, and its quantification is a vital task in the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. This paper combines hybrid quantum-classical computation and quasi-probability decomposition to propose two variational quantum algorithms, called variational entanglement detection (VED) and variational logarithmic negativity estimation (VLNE), for detecting and quantifying entanglement on near-term quantum devices, respectively. VED makes use of the positive map criterion and works as follows. Firstly, it decomposes a positive map into a combination of quantum operations implementable on near-term quantum devices. It then variationally estimates the minimal eigenvalue of the final state, obtained by executing these implementable operations on the target state and averaging the output states. Deterministic and probabilistic methods are proposed to compute the average. At last, it asserts that the target state is entangled if the optimized minimal eigenvalue is negative. VLNE builds upon a linear decomposition of the transpose map into Pauli terms and the recently proposed trace distance estimation algorithm. It variationally estimates the well-known logarithmic negativity entanglement measure and could be applied to quantify entanglement on near-term quantum devices. Experimental and numerical results on the Bell state, isotropic states, and Breuer states show the validity of the proposed entanglement detection and quantification methods.

Direct Measurement of Atomic Entanglement via Cavity Photon Statistics

AbstractAn experimental scheme for the measurement of entanglement between two two‐level atoms is proposed. This scheme requires one of the two entangled atoms to interact with a cavity field dispersively, and it is shown that by measuring the zero time‐delay second‐order coherence function of the cavity field, one can measure the concurrence of an arbitrary Bell‐like atomic two‐qubit state. As this scheme requires only one of the atoms to interact with the measured cavity, the entanglement quantification becomes independent of the location of the other atom. Therefore, this scheme can have important implications for entanglement quantification in distributed quantum systems.
