Multiple-pathways light modulation in Pleurosigma strigosum bi-raphid diatom.

Ordered, quasi-ordered, and even disordered nanostructures can be identified as constituent components of several protists, plants and animals, making possible an efficient manipulation of light for intra- and inter- species communication, camouflage, or for the enhancement of primary production. Diatoms are ubiquitous unicellular microalgae inhabiting all the aquatic environments on Earth. They developed, through tens of millions of years of evolution, ultrastructured silica cell walls, the frustules, able to handle optical radiation through multiple diffractive, refractive, and wave-guiding processes, possibly at the basis of their high photosynthetic efficiency. In this study, we employed a range of imaging, spectroscopic and numerical techniques (including transmission imaging, digital holography, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and numerical simulations based on wide-angle beam propagation method) to identify and describe different mechanisms by which Pleurosigma strigosum frustules can modulate optical radiation of different spectral content. Finally, we correlated the optical response of the frustule to the interaction with light in living, individual cells within their aquatic environment following various irradiation treatments. The obtained results demonstrate the favorable transmission of photosynthetic active radiation inside the cell compared to potentially detrimental ultraviolet radiation.

Increase of temperature exacerbates the conversion of P fractions in organic horizon

In terrestrial ecosystems, phosphorus (P) is the limiting nutrient of primary production. The soil organic horizon is a vital source of bioavailable P in subalpine coniferous forests. However, the response of organic horizon P to temperature increase in subalpine coniferous forests is not well characterized. By studying different decomposed degree of organic horizon across an altitudinal gradient, we aimed to simulate responses of the organic horizon P conversion to MAT increase in subalpine ecosystems. In this study, relative enrichment and relative depletion of P fractions were defined as the conversions between different P fractions. We initially observed only unidirectional conversion from labile inorganic P (LIP) to highly resistant organic P (HOP) at a mean annual temperature (MAT) of 1 °C. However, with increasing MAT, there was a relative depletion of moderately resistant inorganic P (MIP) (MAT = 2.4 °C), followed by a successive depletion of moderately resistant organic P (MOP) (MAT = 4.1 °C). Concurrently, we observed relative enrichment of labile organic P (LOP) (MAT = 2.4 °C). Combined with indoor incubation experiments, we further found that the concentration of available P peaked (81.79 mg kg−1) at the initial stage of MIP relative depletion (MAT = 2.4 °C), while the net P mineralization rate (2.19 mg kg−1 d−1) reached a maximum following the initial relative depletion of MOP (MAT = 4.1 °C). Under elevated temperature, the pH of the organic horizon plays a crucial role in determining P fractions variation. These findings suggest that temperature increase can exacerbate the conversion of P fractions and the release of bioavailable P from organic horizon by successively triggering the relative depletion of MIP, the relative enrichment of LOP and relative depletion of MOP at specific MAT thresholds, which has important implications for the enhancement of primary production and carbon sequestration in subtropical coniferous forests under future climate warming.

Phytoplankton metabolism in a stratified nearshore ecosystem with recurrent harmful algal blooms (HABs)

Abstract The coastal ocean is experiencing changes in its physical and chemical properties that strongly affect planktonic metabolism assemblages and, in some cases, favor the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Here we analyze the variations in phytoplankton biomass, gross and net primary production (NCP) as well as community respiration (CR) at two nearshore sampling sites (P1 and P2) located at a Mediterranean beach where high biomass HABs are recurrent. At P1, the most exposed site, phytoplankton chlorophyll was generally low, whereas dinoflagellates outbreaks of the genus Gymnodinium and Alexandrium were recurrent during summer at P2 spanning for 10–20 days. During bloom episodes, NCP increased up to 10-fold (>80 mmol O2 m−3 day−1). Contrastingly, variation in CR only reached an average of 1.8-fold the rates of non-bloom conditions. Remarkably, although the enhanced NCP:CR ratio suggests net autotrophic population growth, production per unit biomass at P1 and P2 was not significantly different. Our results indicate that although summer conditions favor the necessary primary production enhancement leading to HAB occurrences, the short-term dynamics driving high biomass episodes are not driven by metabolic variations but instead are governed by subtle accumulative processes of some flagellate species in the nutrient-rich nearshore environment.

Contrasting responses of woody and grassland ecosystems to increased CO2 as water supply varies.

Experiments show that elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) often enhances plant photosynthesis and productivity, yet this effect varies substantially and may be climate sensitive. Understanding if, where and how water supply regulates CO2 enhancement is critical for projecting terrestrial responses to increasing atmospheric CO2 and climate change. Here, using data from 14 long-term ecosystem-scale CO2 experiments, we show that the eCO2 enhancement of annual aboveground net primary productivity is sensitive to annual precipitation and that this sensitivity differs between woody and grassland ecosystems. During wetter years, CO2 enhancement increases in woody ecosystems but declines in grass-dominated systems. Consistent with this difference, woody ecosystems can increase leaf area index in wetter years more effectively under eCO2 than can grassland ecosystems. Overall, and across different precipitation regimes, woody systems had markedly stronger CO2 enhancement (24%) than grasslands (13%). We developed an empirical relationship to quantify aboveground net primary productivity enhancement on the basis of changes in leaf area index, providing a new approach for evaluating eCO2 impacts on the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems.

Long term natural and anthropogenic forcing on aquatic system - evidence based on biogeochemical and pollen proxies from lake sediments in Kashmir Himalaya, India

Freshwater aquatic systems are subjected to rapid deterioration driven by multiple stressors such as climate change and human activity. The understanding of the long-term history of eutrophication and their trends provides an opportunity for developing relevant management strategies. In this study, we examine the natural versus anthropogenic impacts on Ahansar Lake using a multiproxy approach (total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), amino acid composition, δ15N, grain size and pollen data) on a210Pb/137Cs dated sediment core spanning the last 200 years. The amino acid datasets clearly show that the organic matter in Ahansar sediment core is less degraded and can be utilized to understand the paleoproductivity changes. Organic matter (OM) within this core is mostly derived from aquatic sources as deduced from C/N (6–11) and δ15N (0–3.2‰) values. The aquatic productivity gradually increases from 1880s, becoming accelerated after the 1930s, and peaked between 1970 and 2016 AD. This enhancement of primary productivity in the lake indicating the increased eutrophication through time due to anthropogenic activities in the recent decades. The results provide baseline information for policymakers and environmentalists to develop strategical framework for future environmental changes in an aquatic system subjected to anthropogenic stressors.

Ecological features of a rocky intertidal community exposed to sewage effluent

Sewage is among the largest components of coastal pollution, showing a variable scale and size when causing an impact. In this study, temporal and spatial sewage-related gradients were identified using univariate and multivariate methods. Phosphates and nitrogen-based nutrients, except nitrate, were associated to sewage. Abundance and species richness decrease with distance from the sewage outfall while evenness increased. Filter-feeder bivalves and grazer crustaceans showed preference for the sewage discharge site. Gastropods were more abundant at an intermediate distance, likely reflecting primary production enhancement by sewage. Beta diversity was lower at the location and time with highest sewage loadings. The turnover component of beta diversity expressed as an absolute or proportional value was also useful to detect temporal and spatial sewage-related gradients. Highly energetic hydrodynamics contributes to ameliorate sewage impacts, yet not enough to veil the effect of pollution in this study.

Biogeochemical processes accounting for the natural mercury variations in the Southern Ocean diatom ooze sediments

Abstract. Due to its toxic nature and its high potential for biomagnification, mercury is a pollutant of concern. Understanding the marine biogeochemical cycle of mercury is crucial as consumption of mercury-enriched marine fish is the most important pathway of human exposure to monomethylmercury, a neurotoxin. However, due to the lack of long-term marine records, the role of the oceans in the global mercury cycle is poorly understood. We do not have well-documented data of natural mercury accumulations during changing environmental conditions, e.g., sea surface conditions in the ocean. To understand the influence of different sea surface conditions (climate-induced changes in ice coverage and biological production) on natural mercury accumulation, we used a continuous ∼170 m Holocene biogenic sedimentary record from Adélie Basin, East Antarctica, which mainly consists of silica-based skeletons of diatoms. We performed principal component analysis and regression analysis on element concentrations and corresponding residuals, respectively, to investigate the link between sediment mercury accumulation, terrestrial inputs, and phytoplankton productivity. Preindustrial mercury in the remote marine basin shows extremely high accumulation rates (median: 556 µg m−2 yr−1) that displayed periodic-like variations. Our analyses show that the variations in total mercury concentrations and accumulation rates are associated with biological production and related scavenging of water-phase mercury by rapidly sinking algae or algae-derived organic matter after intense algae blooms. High accumulation rates of other major and trace elements further reveal that, in regions of high primary productivity, settling of biogenic materials removes a large fraction of dissolved or particulate-bound elements from the free water phase through scavenging or biological uptake. The link between mercury cycling and primary production will need to be considered in future studies of the marine mercury cycle under primary production enhancement through climatic, temperature, and nutrient availability changes.

Enhancement of primary production during drought in a temperate watershed is greater in larger rivers than headwater streams

AbstractDrought is common in rivers, yet how this disturbance regulates metabolic activity across network scales is largely unknown. Drought often lowers gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) in small headwaters but by contrast can enhance GPP and cause algal blooms in downstream estuaries. We estimated ecosystem metabolism across a nested network of 13 reaches from headwaters to the main stem of the Connecticut River from 2015 through 2017, which encompassed a pronounced drought. During drought, GPP and ER increased, but with greater enhancement in larger rivers. Responses of GPP and ER were partially due to warmer temperatures associated with drought, particularly in the larger rivers where temperatures during summer drought were > 10°C higher than typical summer baseflow. The larger rivers also had low canopy cover, which allowed primary producers to take advantage of lower turbidity and fewer cloudy days during drought. We conclude that GPP is enhanced by higher temperature, lower turbidity, and longer water residence times that are all a function of low discharge, but ecosystem response in temperate watersheds to these drivers depends on light availability regulated by riparian canopy cover. In larger rivers, GPP increased more than ER during drought, even leading to temporary autotrophy, an otherwise rare event in the typically light‐limited heterotrophic Connecticut River main stem. With climate change, rivers and streams may become warmer and drought frequency and severity may increase. Such changes may increase autotrophy in rivers with broad implications for carbon cycling and water quality in aquatic ecosystems.

Enhanced global primary production by biogenic aerosol via diffuse radiation fertilization

Terrestrial vegetation releases large quantities of plant volatiles into the atmosphere that can then oxidize to form secondary organic aerosol. These particles affect plant productivity through the diffuse radiation fertilization effect by altering the balance between direct and diffuse radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Here, using a suite of models describing relevant coupled components of the Earth system, we quantify the impacts of biogenic secondary organic aerosol on plant photosynthesis through this fertilization effect. We show that this leads to a net primary productivity enhancement of 1.23 Pg C yr−1 (range 0.76–1.61 Pg C yr−1 due to uncertainty in biogenic secondary organic aerosol formation). Notably, this productivity enhancement is twice the mass of biogenic volatile organic compound emissions (and ~30 times larger than the mass of carbon in biogenic secondary organic aerosol) causing it. Hence, our simulations indicate that there is a strong positive ecosystem feedback between biogenic volatile organic compound emissions and plant productivity through plant-canopy light-use efficiency. We estimate a gain of 1.07 in global biogenic volatile organic compound emissions resulting from this feedback.

Model Simulations of a Mesocosm Experiment Investigating the Response of a Low Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (LNLC) Marine Ecosystem to Atmospheric Deposition Events

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen and phosphorus represents an important source of nutrients, enhancing the marine productivity in oligotrophic areas, e.g. the Mediterranean. A comprehensive biogeochemical model (ERSEM) was setup and customized to simulate a mesocosm experiment, where dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus by means of atmospheric dust (single addition/SA and repetitive addition/RA in three successive doses) was added in controlled tanks and compared with a control (blank), all with Cretan Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) water. Observations on almost all components of the pelagic ecosystem in a ten-day period allowed investigating the effect of atmospheric deposition and the pathways of the added nutrients. The model was able to reasonably capture the observed variability of different ecosystem components and reproduce the main features of the experiment. An enhancement of primary production and phytoplankton biomass with added nutrients was simulated, in agreement with observations. A significant increase of bacterial production was also reproduced, while the model underestimated the observed increase and variability in bacterial biomass, but this deviation could be partly removed considering a lower carbon conversion factor from cell abundance data. A slightly stronger overall response was simulated with the single dust addition, compared to the repetitive that showed a few days delay. The simulated carbon pathways indicated that nutrient additions did not modify the microbial food web structure, but just increased its trophic status. Changes in model assumptions and parameter set that were necessary to reproduce the observed variability in the mesocosm experiment were discussed through a series of sensitivity simulations. Bacterial production was assumed to be mostly affected by the in situ produced labile organic matter, while it was further stimulated by the addition of inorganic nutrients, adopting a function of external nutrient concentrations for bacteria nutrient limitation. The effective increase in phytoplankton nutrient uptake rate was necessary, in order to reproduce the observed primary production, under such low nutrient concentrations, as also the increase of the grazers growth rate. The model was thus tuned to better work under very low nutrient concentrations, such as those found in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Ageostrophic Secondary Circulation in a Subtropical Intrathermocline Eddy

AbstractVertical motions play a key role in the enhancement of primary production within mesoscale eddies through the introduction of nutrients into the euphotic layer. However, the details of the vertical velocity field w driving these enhancements remain under discussion. For the first time the mesoscale w associated with an intrathermocline eddy is computed and analyzed using in situ high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) fields of density and horizontal velocity by resolving a generalized omega equation valid for high Rossby numbers. In the seasonal pycnocline the diagnosed w reveals a multipolar structure with upwelling and downwelling cells located at the eddy periphery. In the main pycnocline w is characterized by a dipolar structure with downwelling velocities upstream of the propagation path and upwelling velocities downstream. Maximum values of w reach 6.4 m day−1. An observed enhancement of chlorophyll-a at the eddy periphery coincides with the location of the upwelling and downwelling cells. Analysis of the forcing terms of the generalized omega equation indicates that the mechanisms behind the dipolar structure of the w field are a combination of horizontal deformation and advection of vertical relative vorticity by ageostrophic vertical shear. The wind during the eddy sampling was rather constant and uniform with a speed of 5 m s−1. Diagnosed nonlinear Ekman pumping leads to a dipolar pattern that mirrors the inferred w. Horizontal ageostrophic secondary circulation is dominated by centripetal acceleration and closes the dipole w structure. Vertical fluxes act to maintain the intrathermocline eddy structure.

Climate variability in SE Europe since 1450 AD based on a varved sediment record from Etoliko Lagoon (Western Greece)

To achieve deeper understanding of climate variability during the last millennium in SE Europe, we report new sedimentological and paleoecological data from Etoliko Lagoon, Western Greece. The record represents the southernmost annually laminated (i.e., varved) archive from the Balkan Peninsula spanning the Little Ice Age, allowing insights into critical time intervals of climate instability such as during the Maunder and Dalton solar minima. After developing a continuous, ca. 500-year-long varve chronology, high-resolution μ–XRF counts, stable-isotope data measured on ostracod shells, palynological (including pollen and dinoflagellate cysts), and diatom data are used to decipher the season-specific climate and ecosystem evolution at Etoliko Lagoon since 1450 AD. Our results show that the Etoliko varve record became more sensitive to climate change from 1740 AD onwards. We attribute this shift to the enhancement of primary productivity within the lagoon, which is documented by an up to threefold increase in varve thickness. This marked change in the lagoon's ecosystem was caused by: (i) increased terrestrial input of nutrients, (ii) a closer connection to the sea and human eutrophication particularly from 1850 AD onwards, and (iii) increasing summer temperatures. Integration of our data with those of previously published paleolake sediment records, tree-ring-based precipitation reconstructions, simulations of atmospheric circulation and instrumental precipitation data suggests that wet conditions in winter prevailed during 1740–1790 AD, whereas dry winters marked the periods 1790–1830 AD (Dalton Minimum) and 1830–1930 AD, the latter being sporadically interrupted by wet winters. This variability in precipitation can be explained by shifts in the large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns over the European continent that affected the Balkan Peninsula (e.g., North Atlantic Oscillation). The transition between dry and wet phases at Etoliko points to longitudinal shifts of the precipitation pattern in the Balkan Peninsula during the Little Ice Age.

3D stratigraphic forward numerical modelling approach for prediction of organic-rich deposits and their heterogeneities

The source rock characteristics (e.g. thickness, lateral extension, richness) are known to be highly variable in both time and space. The Lower Jurassic formations of north-western Europe contain source rocks with organic-rich intervals showing different characteristics from one region to another: the Paris Basin differs from the South-East Basin of France, but organic content and hydrogen index also vary within a single basin. During the Early Jurassic, the overall depositional environment of north-western Europe corresponded to an epicontinental domain at the western extremity of the Tethys Ocean. The early transgressive phase of the Jurassic induced flooding of this European realm. Because of the evolution of the connections and threshold of the European basins and their associated sedimentary settings, this domain occupied a key position for the deposition of organic-rich layers. Using a forward modelling approach, we aim to predict the heterogeneous characteristics of such sediments. It is widely accepted that primary productivity and preservation are key factors favouring the accumulation of organic-rich layers. However, the roles of these factors remain to be assessed and the processes leading to accumulation and preservation need to be quantified.We focus on the Lower Jurassic (Hettangian to Toarcian) in France, since this provides a vast amount of data to calibrate the 100-kyr time step model in terms of an accurate framework including paleogeography, stratigraphy, lithology, palaeontology, mineralogy and geochemistry.Results show that favourable conditions for the deposition of organic-rich sediment can occur even with moderate primary productivity and without requiring anoxic conditions. These windows are firstly dependent on internal factors directly linked to the basin morphology, such as sedimentation rate, bathymetry and distance from the coastline. We do not need to evoke external factors such as oceanic anoxic events or enhancement of primary production to account for the deposition of organic-rich sediments.

Artificial upwelling using offshore wind energy for mariculture applications

Offshore wind is proposed as an energy source to upwell nutrient-rich deep water to the ocean photic layers. A spar-buoy wind turbine with a rigid tube about 300 m long is proposed as a pipe to drive deep water up to the surface. The minimum energy required to uplift the water is the potential energy difference between surface waters inside and outside the pipe, which depends on the background density profile. The corresponding surface jump or hydraulic head, h, calculated for several analytical and experimental density profiles, is of the order of 10 cm. If the complete turbine power (of the order of several MW) is used for raising the water (assuming a 100% pump efficiency), in a frictionless flow, very large water volumes, of the order of thousands of m 3 s -1 , will be transported to the photic layers. In a more realistic case, taking into account pipe friction in wide pipes, of the order of 10 m radius, and a power delivered to the fluid of 1 MW, the volume transport is still very large, about 500 m 3 s -1 . However, such a large amount of dense water could sink fast to aphotic layers due to vertical static instability ( the fountain effect ), ruining the enhancement of primary production. Hence, some ways to increase the turbulent entrainment and avoid the fountain effect are proposed. From the energetic viewpoint, artificial upwelling using offshore wind energy is a promising way to fertilize large open sea regions. This mariculture application is, however, severely subjected to atmosphere and ocean climatology, as well as to ecological dynamics. The general problem is multidisciplinary, and some important physical, engineering and ecological questions need to be seriously addressed to improve our confidence in the approach presented here.

Primary production enhancement in a shallow seamount (Gorringe — Northeast Atlantic)

Gorringe bank is a shallow seamount having its summit within the euphotic layer. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the interaction of ocean currents with shallow water seamounts, as the Gorringe, has a significant effect on local upwelling and primary production. Three hydrographic surveys were carried out: one in autumn (October 2011) and two in summer (June and July 2012). Physical (salinity, temperature), chemical (nutrients, dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity and suspended particulate matter) and biological (chlorophyll, pelagic primary production and phytoplankton composition and abundance) variables were measured and/or determined in the area of Gorringe Bank, in particular over and around the Ormonde and Gettysburg peaks. Multivariate analyses (PCA and MDS) were applied to environmental and phytoplankton data. Statistical analysis of historical satellite and model data was also carried out in order to analyze local hydrographic conditions and to compare sea surface temperature and chlorophyll concentrations over the peaks and off the peaks in different seasons. Pelagic primary production, measured by Dissolved Oxygen methodology, reached values up to 24.10mgCm−3h−1 in the vicinity of the peaks. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from 2.2×103 to 14×103cellsL−1, being the community composed mainly of chain-forming Diatoms like Chaetoceros sp., Dactyliosolen spp., Hemiaulus hauckii and Pseudonitzschia spp., in summer months, in zones of high hydrodynamics of the peaks. By contrast, at locations away of the seamount summits and in autumn, Coccolithophores species reached the same or higher percentage in total abundance than Diatoms, being Discosphaera tubifer and Calcidiscus leptoporus cf. the most abundant species. The combined results indicate the presence of a seasonal effect of Gorringe summits on local upwelling and enhancement of primary production reflected in higher abundance of phytoplankton in the vicinity of the peaks, with emphasis on the Gettysburg, and higher surface chlorophyll concentrations. Therefore, obtained results support the hypothesis of production enhancement.

A high-resolution chemostratigraphy of post-Marinoan Cap Carbonate using drill core samples in the Three Gorges area, South China

Cap Carbonates overlie the Marinoan Snowball Earth-related glacial diamictite, and possibly record the drastic surface environmental change and biological evolution after the Snowball Earth. We conducted on-land drilling from the Liantuo Formation, through the Nantuo, to the lower Doushantuo Formation in the Three Gorges area of South China to collect fresh, continuous samples in the Three Gorges area. We obtained high-resolution chemostratigraphies of δ13C and δ18O values of carbonates from the topmost part of the Nantuo Formation to the Cap Carbonate, in order to decode the detailed surface environmental change in the shallow marine setting. The δ13C chemostratigraphy possesses some unique characteristics: (1) stable δ13C values as a whole, but ubiquitous low δ13C anomalies through the Cap Carbonate, (2) increase of the δ13C values from −3 to +5‰ across the C2/C3 boundary, (3) no δ13C anomaly between the C1 and C2 boundary, and (4) presence of an anomalous high δ13C value (+2.3‰) and a faint positive correlation between δ13C and δ18O values in the C1 unit.Evidence of quite low δ13C anomalies (with a nadir of −41‰), ubiquitous negative δ13C anomalies through the Cap Carbonate, and a high δ13C anomaly accompanied with a faint positive correlation between δ13C and δ18O values in the C1 unit supports decomposition and formation of methane hydrate during Cap Carbonate formation. The drastic increase of δ13C values from the upper C2 to C3 units indicates enhancement of primary productivity and organic carbon burial, possibly due to high continental fluxes after the Snowball Earth event, evidenced by high Sr isotope values. The increase is restricted to the proximal side of the inner shelf in South China, and the timing of the increase of δ13C values of carbonates is earlier at Three Gorges area than any other area, suggesting that the enhancement of primary productivity started in the proximal environment because of higher continental influxes. The increase in oxygen contents of seawater due to the enhanced primary productivity possibly resulted in the emergence of multicellular animals soon after Cap Carbonate deposition.

Eemian environmental changes recorded in lake deposits from Rzecino (NW Poland): Cladocera, isotopic and selected geochemical data

Analysis of Cladocera and organic matter from the sediments of the Rzecino paleolake are presented. These are probably among the first detailed published data from the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e) organic matter. The Rzecino paleolake is located in NW Poland in an area covered by the last glaciation. Approximately 5.8 m of sediment was analyzed. Previous palynological data indicate a continuous accumulation from the final phase of the Wartanian to the early Vistulian Glaciation. Data on the Cladocera correlated with the results of the analyses of organic matter, which enabled the reconstruction of varying environmental conditions and geneses of organic matter. In the final phase of the Wartanian and at the beginning of the Eemian Interglacial, low frequencies of Cladocera specimens and species were identified, which suggests unfavorable conditions for the development of zooplankton. Organic matter (OM) was characterized by a small amount of organic carbon and nitrogen, a high value of C/N (18–27) and a δ13C of approximately −26 ‰, which suggests a higher plant source and a predominantly terrestrial origin for OM. An improvement in environmental conditions occurred during the pollen zone E3. The number of Cladocera species and individuals increased. An increase in TOC and TN suggests an enhancement of primary productivity and the development of macrophytes in the lake. A lower C/N ratio indicates a primary role of algae in the production of organic matter. During the Eemian optimum (pollen zones E4–E5), mostly Cladocera species preferring warm water occurred. Algae remained a significant component of OM. The early Eemian post-optimum (pollen zone E6) was characterized as a period of maximal abundance of zooplankton (20 species). During this period, rapid decreases in TOC, TN and the C/N ratio and an increase in δ13C values suggest the reduced abundance of higher plants in the lake. In pollen zone E7, the frequency and diversity of Cladocera rapidly decreased. Species that tolerate cold water were dominant, which reflects unfavorable conditions for the development of zooplankton but a high water level. The low content of organic carbon and nitrogen, a C/N ratio in the range of 13–17 and δ13C values in the range of −26.2 to −28 ‰ suggest the inhibition of terrestrial plant delivery. During the Early Vistulian (pollen zone EV1), rare faunal remains and the features of OM (the lowest amounts of TOC and TN, and the highest value of C/N) reflect the decline of lake conditions and a lack of primary production and aquatic vegetation in the lake.

Environmental factors controlling particulate mass fluxes on the Mallorca continental slope (Western Mediterranean Sea)

Settled material recorded by two near bottom sediment traps deployed from November 2009 to February 2011 at northern (Sóller) and southern (Cabrera) slopes of Mallorca Island (Western Mediterranean) is studied with the aim of discerning their possible origin. The total settled particulate mass fluxes (TMF) at Sóller station were found to be, on average, 2.8 times greater than at Cabrera location during the deployment period, although both time series had a similar temporal evolution. It is suggested that wind episodes affecting the entire area were the common forcing, causing a primary production enhancement and being responsible of the similar temporal behavior. The greater sediment amounts collected in Sóller are explained on the basis of two physical mechanisms: 1) a number of successive eddies generated by instabilities of the Balearic Current that are regularly observed on satellite images, some of which have been reported to reach the seabed, thus increasing near bottom velocities and causing sediment resuspension. And 2) bottom trapped waves that are evidenced from a wavelet analysis in Sóller which could affect the TFM by enhancing sediment resuspension or advecting material from the surrounding areas.

Response of dissolved oxygen and related marine ecological parameters to a tropical cyclone in the South China Sea

It is well known that tropical cyclones can cause upwelling, decrease of sea surface temperature, increase of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration and enhancement of primary production. But little is known about the response of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration to a typhoon in the open ocean. This paper investigates the impact of a typhoon on DO concentration and related ecological parameters using in situ and remote sensing data. The in situ data were collected 1week after the passage of the super-typhoon Nanmadol in the northern South China Sea in 2011. An increase in DO concentration, accompanied by a decrease in water temperature and an increase in salinity and Chl-a concentration, was measured at sampling stations close to the typhoon track. At these stations, maximum DO concentration was found at a depth of around 5m and maximum Chl-a concentration at depths between 50 and 75m. The layer of high DO concentration extends from the surface to a depth of 35m and the concentrations stay almost constant down to this depth. Due to the passage of the typhoon, also a large sea level anomaly (21.6cm) and a high value of Ekman pumping velocity (4.0×10−4ms−1) are observed, indicating upwelling phenomenon. At the same time, also intrusion of Kuroshio waters in the form of a loop current into the South China Sea (SCS) was observed. We attribute the increase of DO concentration after the passage of the typhoon to three effects: (1) entrainment of oxygen from the air into the upper water layer and strong vertical mixing of the water body due to the typhoon winds, (2) upwelling of cold nutrient-rich water which stimulates photosynthesis of phytoplankton and thus the generation of oxygen, which also increases the DO concentration due to cold water since the solubility of oxygen increase with decreasing water temperature, and, possibly, (3) transport of DO enriched waters from the Western Pacific to the SCS via the intrusion of Kuroshio waters.

Nutricline shoaling in the eastern Pacific warm pool during the last two glacial maxima

Isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) and alkenones were analyzed in sediment samples retrieved from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1241 covering the last 150000 years to understand the hydrological evolution of the eastern Pacific warm pool (EPWP). GDGT and alkenone concentrations showed higher values in marine isotope stage (MIS)-2 and MIS-6, which suggests the enhancement of primary production at glacial maxima. \( {\text{TEX}}_{86}^{\text{H}} \)- and \( U_{ 3 7^\prime }^{\text{K}} \)-derived temperature depicted different temperature evolutions. \( U_{ 3 7^\prime }^{\text{K}} \)-derived temperature was marked by small variation during the glacial–interglacial cycles, whereas \( {\text{TEX}}_{86}^{\text{H}} \)-derived temperature showed pronounced glacial–interglacial variation that was similar to Mg/Ca-derived temperature records from nearby cores in the EPWP. Given that enhanced primary production during glacial maxima suggests nutricline shoaling, unchanged \( U_{ 3 7^\prime }^{\text{K}} \) over glacial–interglacial cycles can be interpreted as the shift of alkenone production depth. \( {\text{TEX}}_{86}^{\text{H}} \) seems not to be influenced by glacial–interglacial changes in nutricline depths, recording an integrated temperature in surface and thermocline water. The shallow nutricline in the EPWP during glacial maxima most likely reflected the intense formation of Antarctic intermediate water.
