Climate Change-Based Speaking Instructional Material for Students at Saint Paul’s Junior Seminary: Students’ Needs Analysis

Through education, awareness of the importance of climate change as a global issue can be delivered. Aligned with the encyclical Laudato si issued by Pope Francis that mentioned climate change, the seminary as a Catholic school is expected to fulfill the Pope's call. This study aimed to determine the needs of Saint Paul's Junior Seminary students to design English speaking materials based on climate change. This study used mixed methods with ADDIE development model. The data was obtained through questionnaires and face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The participants of this research were 31 students of the 4th grade at Saint Paul’s Junior Seminary and an English teacher. The results of the needs analysis showed that: 1) students still had difficulty speaking English; 2) there were no English-speaking materials that specifically discuss climate change; 3) students needed learning resources that provide English language materials that specifically discuss climate change; 4) there should be more practice speaking English about climate change which will increase students' awareness of the environment, in line with Pope Francis' Laudato si. From these needs, it was necessary to develop English-speaking material based on climate change because of the students' inability to speak English about climate change and to increase students’ awareness of climate change.

Teaching English Speaking through Discourse in the State Islamic Universities in Borneo

Introducing accurate discourses and understanding the discourses that students encounter in their daily lives is crucial for enhancing the teaching of spoken English language. To enhance students' linguistic proficiency, the method of teaching speaking through discourse involves immersing them in authentic dialogues and diverse communication scenarios. This is a descriptive qualitative research, employing a case study approach. The participants of the research are the teachers and students of the State Islamic University of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda and the State Islamic University of Antasari Banjarmasin. To collect data for the study, the researcher used a variety of research instruments, such as interviews, field notes, and questionnaires. This study's data analysis method adheres to the principles of qualitative research. The interactive model was used for the data analysis, which included stages for data collecting, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Research findings indicate that students have a preference for teachers who not only teach English language curriculum but also demonstrate how to achieve a successful future. For English teachers, it is important to teach students not only English-speaking materials but also proper behaviour and politeness. In terms of English language proficiency, students highlight that speaking is the primary skill in acquiring English since it demonstrates their mastery of the language.

DEVELOPING SPEAKING MATERIAL BASED ON THE TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) METHOD FOR THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENT

The background of the development of speaking material based on Total Physical Response (TPR) is looking at the state of the learning method in general. The objectives of this study analyzed the process of development, validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the method for teaching speaking based on the 2013 of problems: 1) developing speaking material based on Total Physical Response (TPR) for the eighth-grade student. 2) The feasibility the developing speaking material based on the Total physical response (TPR) Method for the eighth-grade student.
 
 The researcher applied the research and development (R&D) from Sugiyono (2016). The data were collected in only 8 steps. The subject of this study was VIII B at MTS Syech Subakir Nglegok which consist of 30 students who participated the in the testing activities. The collection techniques used were observation through interviews and Questionaire. Experts’ validation and students learning outcomes tests. While the data analysis techniques used were validity analysis, practical analysis, and effectiveness analysis of learning speaking based on the Total Physical Response (TPR) Method.
 
 The results of the design and development show that the model Total Physical Response is valid, the average of the two material experts, media experts, and learning experts is 80%. The test results show that the model is effective. This research was conducted in class VIII MTS Sheikh Subakir Nglegok. The class consists of 30 students involved in the needs analysis and trials that use the method of one experimental design group pre and post-test. The pre-test (57,75) results increase in the post-test (78) results. In the paired sample t-test, the t-count is 17,71 with a t-table of 3,767. The product is valid and can be used as a medium in the teaching and learning proses. The English-speaking material based on Total Physical Response was completed with the teacher and student book. It made the teacher easily use the method. The Total Physical Response (TPR) Method enchanted the students' speaking and Appropriate with the 2013 Curriculum.

Developing English Speaking Material For Students Of Business And Management Program At Vocational School

The objective of this study was to develop English speaking material based on students’ needs. This study followed the steps of research and development proposed by Borg and Gall. Which are 1) evaluation and need analysis; 2) material development; 3) validation; 4) revision and final production. It was found that 83% students agreed that the existing materials currently used by the students were irrelevant with business and management program.The irrelevance materials were then developed through CTL approach and relevant with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. The learning materials were then validated by two experts. The average score of the validation was 88, It showed that learning materials were very good, relevant and feasible.

Developing Islamic Tasks-Based Speaking English Materials for Islamic Elementary School Students: A Case Study at Elementary Schools in West Lombok, Indonesia

The present study aims to develop English Speaking Materials specifically designed for Islamic Elementary School students that adequately meet their language learning needs and preferences. In this regard, the study employs a Research and Development (R&D) ADDIE model, comprising five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The researcher not only acted as a materials developer but also as a teacher, since the data collection was conducted in the Islamic Elementary School. The participants in this study included 35 Islamic students and 2 Islamic teachers, and the data collection techniques utilized were questionnaires and structured interviews. The developed materials are grounded on a Project-based learning approach. The study investigates the need analysis for English Speaking Materials for Islamic Elementary School, describes the speaking materials for Islamic Elementary School, and evaluates their quality. The findings of the needs analysis reveal that elementary Islamic students aspire to enhance their fluency in English speaking and acquire more vocabulary to effectively communicate in formal and informal discussions. Accordingly, the developed materials consist of five units, equipped with tasks that incorporate inputs in the form of texts and videos, designed to facilitate the learning process. Moreover, the materials encourage creativity in exploring student knowledge. The study concludes by recommending that future researchers interested in this area utilize this study as an object of research and build upon its limitations. It is hoped that the outcomes of this research are of value to university students, who conduct research in the area of English Language Teaching.

Developing English Instructional Materials by Combining YouTube and ABA (American and British Academy) Application

This research was based on the students’ problem regarding the English teaching, especially English materials where they have poor English skills because the lecturer did not have instructional materials related to their department, the media and method did not interesting, and instructional facilities did not enough to cover the learning process. The objective of this research was to develop English speaking materials based on modified ADDIE approach (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). This research was conducted at the Biological students of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare, Indonesia. The method used in this research was developmental research which attempts to develop English learning material for English skills based on the modified ADDIE approach (Analyze, Design, and Development). The researcher applied design instructional as the research design. The researcher implemented some steps in developing English speaking materials; Need Analysis, Design, Development, Expert Validation, Revision, Try Out, and Final Product. The result of the research was The suitable materials for Biological students of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare were authentic materials. The development was coursebook which was designed to possibly for the students working on it. The materials were adopted from YouTube and ABA English. The instructional materials focused on input, process, and output. The students’ positive perception toward the instructional materials was in a very good value and the lecturer’s positive perception was also in very good value. It means that English for Biology instruction has a good quality in the form of the course map, lesson plan, lecturer’s manual, topic, video clips, materials, students’ worksheet, learning activities, and assessment

The Speaking English Material Needs of Engineering Students for the English Club Program: An ESP Analysis

Needs analysis as the basis of English for specific purposes (ESP) is deemed crucial to identify the target materials or languages used in the teaching-learning process and to design an effective curriculum. This study aims to investigate engineering students' needs for English-speaking materials in the English club program of one private university in Garut. To address the result of ESP analysis, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative method with questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. The need analysis result revealed that the English learning goal for the students in the English club program is to communicate actively in English. Their interest in learning English in this program is to improve their speaking ability to support their formal study as university students since it influences their academic performance and prepares them to fulfill the demands of job requirements in the future. Most students consider that the materials they need to learn are related to job life, academic purposes as engineering students, and social interaction. The result also suggests that the module created by the tutor for the English club program should focus on topics related to job life that are relevant to the current situation.<p> </p>

Developing Speaking Material Based on Essential Basic Competencies at Muhammadiyah 1 High School Yogyakarta

Abstract: The objectives of this research are to find out the students’ needs of using material at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta toward English speaking material due to Covid-19 disease, to find out teachers’ needs towards English speaking material, and to find out the development of English speaking material based on essential basic competencies.This research employs Research and Development. The population was all XI students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta and the sample was chosen purposively only 35 students of class XI MIPA 8. The data were gathered through interviews with teachers to find out the existence of the use of English speaking materials. In addition, researchers have also distributed questionnaires to students of class XI MIPA 8 to find out the students' need for appropriate modules to improve speaking skills. The data was analyzed by based on the theme of the research questions.The results of this study indicate that the existing material is in line with the pandemic conditions, such as the module design being attractive, the content in the module in line with the latest syllabus (essential basic competencies), and the module being converted into the online form, thus students can study anywhere and anytime. The students' need for the material developed showed very varied results. As for the module development process, the researcher follows the stages under the Research and Development method.

The Students’ Perception of Apprehending, Synthesizing, Analyzing, and Responding (ASAR) Speaking Process-Based Instructional Materials

This study was based on the students’ problems regarding English teaching, especially English materials of speaking skills. The students have poor English speaking ability because the lecturer did not have instructional materials related to their department. The media and method was not attractive and the instructional facilities were not enough to facilitate a good learning process. The objective of the research was to develop Englishspeaking materials by integrating Apprehending, Synthesizing, Analyzing, and Responding (ASAR) based material. The sample of the study was Biological students of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare, Indonesia. The method used in this research was developmental research which attempts to develop English-speaking materials based on the modified ADDIE approach (Analyze, Design, and Development). The result of the study was an authentic English-speaking materials for Biological students of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare. The instructional materials focused on input, process, and output. After the materials were given the student’s perception changed into very good value. It means that English-speaking instructions for the Biology department have good quality in the form of course map, lesson plan, lecturer's manual, topic, video clips, materials, students' worksheets, learning activities, and assessment.

The word-forming motivation for lexical innovations in the cognitive space (based on ukrainian- and english-speaking sources)

The cognitive space where lexical innovations have semantic content and are formed by word-formation innovations opens a broad research field. However, lexical innovations have their creation mechanisms, are sometimes not regular, and cannot carry semantic content outside of contexts and conventions. For this reason, it is relevant to consider effective means of working with both Ukrainian- and English-speaking materials during learning. It also requires appealing to present-day findings in cognitive science, comunicativism, and pragmatics. This research is aimed at establishing the effective use of motivational models as achievements of cognitive science while using innovative approaches to learning English and Ukrainian languages. This is an analysis of the effectiveness of involving word-formation motivation in the foreign languages' learning process to create lexical innovations from the standpoint of linguocognitivism theories. The research methodology is based on a complex approach: survey, observation, descriptive method, analysis, and synthesis. The experiment is a principal method. However, the evaluation of the new method's effectiveness was carried out using a survey at the final stage of the research. The leading research hypothesis assumes that using scientific achievements of modern cognitive science in foreign language teaching is an effective learning practice; applying models of word-formation motivation in lexical innovations translation is necessary for foreign language teaching.

Developing speaking material in English program at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Nurul Ummah Kotagede

This research was aimed to develop an English-Speaking Material for English program at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Nurul Ummah and to figure out the efficacy of the developed product. This research was conducted in response to the problems faced by the teacher in developing students’ speaking skills, especially in elementary school. This is an R&D research which adopted from Borg and Gall's (1982) Model in the R&D method. The procedures of this research comprise 1) Research and Information Collecting, 2) Planning and Drafting, 3) Draft revision, 4) Field Testing, 5) Revision and 6) Final Product. The data were collected from observation and teacher’s interviews. The first stage is research and Information Collecting. The result of the first stage is about students’ need analysis. The content of need analysis are necessities, want, lack. The target situation of the English Active Program is the students can master speaking English in daily life’s context. Then, the first problems or lacks of the students in learning speaking are about vocabulary and pronunciation. Based on the result the researcher has developed the course grid and the speaking material. The result of this product development was beneficial, useful, and appropriate to be used for developing the speaking skills of students of Elementary school. The efficacy of the developed English-speaking materials involves the strengths and weaknesses of the product. The strengths of the developed English-speaking material are the use of the Direct Method and Communicative Language Teaching, the contents of speaking material are based on students ‘daily topics that make students motivated to learn, varied activities in the material stimulate the students speaking activity. This material consists activity that is joyful like a sing a song, games, and group practice. The other side, the weakness of the developed product related to speaking skill are it lacks grammar material.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING MATERIAL THROUGH CBI FOR MARKETING STUDENTS ON VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The Purpose of this study are; 1) to examine the existing English speaking materials of Marketing students; 2) to investigate English Speaking material which needed to meet with the marketing students’ need; 3) to develop English Speaking materials for Marketing students based on Content Based Instruction. . This study is descriptive qualitative research. This study inspired of ten stage of Educational Research and Development model by Gall, Gall and Borg, 2003. but in implementing the model is simplified and adapted to Dirgayasa (2011) become four steps: 1) Evaluation and need analysis, 2) designing new material, 3) validating material, 4) revision and final production. The instrument of collecting data was collected by questionnaire, documentation and interview. The source of the data was students of XI Marketing academic year 2018/2019, Marketing teacher, stake holder, alumnus and also syllabus and the existing speaking material used at this time. The result of this study showed that 86 % students agree that they really need the relevant material which proper to their program and the analysis of the existing speaking materials and the existing syllabus showed that both are less relevant for English speaking skill for Marketing students. From the evaluation research got that learning method which used in the learning process found that it was less relevant. From evaluation research of documentation and interview agreed that the developing of speaking material for Marketing students is needed through Content Based Instruction. The final product of this speaking materials entitled English speaking materials for marketing. Developing English Speaking Material through Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) for Beauty Study Program

The research was aimed to identify the target needs and learning needs of the tenth grade student of Beauty Study program at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan and to develop English speaking material through CTL for Beauty Study Program. This research was implemented by conducting Research and Development (R n D) study by Borg and Gall. There are four steps were done namely: (1) need analysis; (2) developing material; (3) evaluating and (final revision). The target clients of this research were 34 people which consisted of (a) 30 students of Tenth grade of Beauty Program chosen by total random sampling technique; (b) English lectures; (c) English teacher; and (d) stakeholder. There were 3 types of technique for collecting the data applied in this research, they were questionnaire which used to gain the need analysis and validate the material, documentation consisted of the existing material, and interview to support the data gained from the previous techniques. The data of the research was analyzed descriptively. The result of this research were (1) the students needed the English speaking material which contains the material relating to their filed expertise and supported by innovative and creative learning process, and (2) the English speaking material developed through CTL is a set of English speaking material which consisted of 6 units. Developing Supplementary Teaching Speaking I Materials for Students of English Education Program of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Bengkulu, Indonesia

Most of third semester students of English Education program of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Bengkulu, Indonesia, encountered many problems in speaking activity. The main problem was there were not appropriate teaching English speaking materials yet that give big portion and opportunity for the students to speak actively and freely based on their contextual or daily experiences and background in order to support teaching and learning process of English speaking I. the objective of this research is developing a set of supplementary teaching English speaking materials for the students based Contextual Teaching and Learning. This research used Research and Development design with the procedures: conducting need assessment, developing supplementary materials, conducting expert validation, revising the materials, trying out the materials, and revising the materials. The researcher collected the data by using questionnaires, interview, analyzing the syllabus, and field note. The product of this research is four units of supplementary teaching English speaking I materials for third semester students of English Education program of State Institute for Islamic Studies Bengkulu, Indonesia.

Inculcating Islamic values contented in Qs. Luqman through english speaking materials

Islamic junior high schools have more duties than the public schools. They have the duty of teaching Islamic values to their students because these schools are established based on Islamic teachings. Islamic values must be included in all aspects of the school program. The materials used for teaching the students should also contain Islamic values. Unfortunately, based on the writers’ observation, not all Islamic junior high schools integrate Islamic values in the materials taught to the students. This fact challenges the English teachers in Islamic schools to select and to consider the appropriate values, cultures, and ideologies in teaching and learning English process. As a result, this paper is based on a study conducted to develop materials which integrate Islamic values for teaching Speaking in a private junior high school in Yogyakarta. The study was aimed to reveal the students’ needs in relation to the integration of the Islamic values in the materials for teaching the speaking skill and to know the appropriateness of the materials. This is an R D study. To design the textbook the ADDIE Model was employed. To meet the textbook appropriateness, the designed textbook is analysed by conducting theoretical and empirical validation. The result of the study indicates that the designed materials are appropriate to be used in the Islamic schools.

DESIGNING ENGLISH SPEAKING MATERIALS USING TASK- BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING (TBLT) FOR ISLAMIC ECONOMICS STUDENTS

This research aimed to 1) describe the steps of designing English speaking materials using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) for Islamic Economics Students of IAIN Metro 2) determine the students’ responses toward English Speaking Materials using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). The type of this research was Research and Development (R&D). This research was conducted within 5 months. The subjects were students of the Islamic Economics Department of IAIN Metro. The results showed that 1) the steps in designing English speaking materials using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) are potency and problem, data collection, product design, design validation, design revision, product testing, product revision. Product testing was used to determine the students’ responses toward the product. and 2) The results of students' responses analysis towards English speaking materials using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) which distributed to 24 Islamic Economics students were very good. It can be seen from the the average score after being converted into quantitative data that was 3.46. Therefore, English speaking materials using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) are considered reasonable to use.

Speaking materials for conversation class at Islamic senior high school

This research study aimed to develop English speaking materials to support the learning process in Conversation class of the tenth-graders at Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic senior high school) Al Ma’had An Nur, Bantul. This research was a research and development study. The development was carried out through several steps, namely the needs analysis, a course grid design, product development, product validation, product revisions, try-outs, and final product development. The research had two results. First, it produced a set of speaking materials in the form of printed books. Second, the findings showed that the materials were appropriate to be applied in the Conversation class of the tenth-graders at Madrasah Aliyah Al Ma’had An Nur, Bantul considering the result of the materials evaluation by experts and students’ try-outs. They scored 3.59 and 3.32 for the mean score of the scale 1 to 4 and were categorized as “Very Good”.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING MATERIALS OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FOR GRADE X STUDENTS OF CULINARY STUDY PROGRAM AT SMK NEGERI 10 MEDAN

This research has aims to develop English speaking materials for grade X culinary study program at SMKN 10 Medan, first this research was conducted by Research and Development through has Six stages, they are: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by the experts, revising and the last was Final product. The subject in this research was students grade X boga 3 at SMKN 10 Medan where the students consisting of 36 students, the instrumentations for data collection were giving a questionnaire and interview, questionnaire was administrate and it answer by the students to get the students need, and the interview was administrate to the English teacher, the result of the questionnaire and interview prove that the student need some appropriate speaking material in descriptive text that has relation with their program study, that is culinary. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units: lets’ talk about chef Juna (describing People), how the smell, taste and texture of your favorite food? (Describing things) and the last units was talk about famous restaurant (Describing Place). The product has been validated by two experts, and the average score are 4, 75 are coming from English Lecture’s, the second average score 4, 89 are coming from English teacher. From the score above, it means that the product categorized as relevant for grade X students of culinary study program.Key words: R&D, English for Specific Purposes, English speaking materials, culinary study program.

Supplementary speaking materials using task based language teaching for primary school in Yogyakarta context

This research is aimed to develop supplementary speaking materials for fifth grade students. Belonging to educational research and development (R&D), this research employed a simplified six steps of Borg and Gall’s model (1983). The six steps are as follow (1) conducting needs analysis, (2) constructing course grid, (3) developing course grid based on the combination of the 2006 Curriculum (KTSP) and the result of the needs analysis for young learners. The English speaking material was designed based on the principles of Language Curriculum Design proposed by Nation & Macalister (2010) and task-based language teaching proposed by Willis (2003) (4) the tryout of the course grid to the fifth grade students at SD Kanisius Ganjuran Bantul, (5) evaluation and revision of course grid by the experts, and (6) final product. The finding shows that the product relies much on pertaining KD of the 2006 Curriculum and the teacher expected that the students need to improve speaking skill since they have opportunity to speak English. English speaking materials are in line with student’s wants who are young learners. The strengths of this product help students to improve their speaking skill especially the vocabularies, the language function used in spoken language. The tasks can fascinate the students on teaching and learning process of English lesson.

English speaking materials for the tenth grade students based on the 2017 revised edition of the 2013 Curriculum

The purpose of this study is (1) to develop supplementary English-speaking materials for the students of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari grade X based on the 2013 Curriculum, (2) to describe the effectiveness of the supplementary English-speaking material for the students of SMKN Tanjungsari grade X in developing their speaking skill. The research belongs to Educational research and Development (R&D) using a simplified six steps of Borg and Gall’s model (1983). The six steps are as follows. (1) Research and information collecting were conducted by performing document analysis, class observation, interview, product testing, as well as experts’ judgement, (2) planning and drafting were conducted following Nation and Macallister (2010), (3) Draft revision by expert, (4) Field testing was conducted in Nautica class A of the X grade of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari, (5) Revision, and (6) Final product. The finding shows that (1) supplementary materials which were developed in this research fulfill the criteria of R&D model. It is necessary to provide speaking materials which were needed for the students of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari who faced the problem in speaking skill. The product of the research also fulfills the teacher’ needs as the materials which are not covered in the recently used textbook can be found in this supplementary material but the focus is in speaking. (2) The effectiveness of the supplementary speaking materials shows it is helpful towards the students in developing their speaking skill which is very needed in working world. The supplementary of speaking materials provides additional learning resources for students as well as the teacher to teach.
