Study of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted English Oral Teaching

This study investigates and practices the auxiliary role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, especially Large Language Models (LLM) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology, in English oral teaching. In the study, an AI-based LLM oral dialogue platform was constructed to replace teachers for one-on-one interactive training with students. It has been applied in college English teaching in various universities, and teaching data has been collected and analyzed in real-time. The effectiveness of AI technology in assisting college English oral teaching was evaluated, and the role of AI technology application in improving students' oral skills was explored. We conducted comparative analysis on indicators such as the speaking sentence length, speech rate, and combined with questionnaires from students, we surveyed the practical effects of AI oral teaching. The study shows that AI-assisted dialogue training has a significant positive effect on college English oral skills, and we have also proposed corresponding teaching strategies and suggestions.

Fostering Autonomous Learning in Oral English Through Role Play: An Exploration in Course Setting

Enhancing student motivation to manage their learning process and attain self-transformation in Oral English learning presents a notable challenge. This study emerged from a Role Play Oral English Course (RPOEC) which utilizes English cartoon film clips to enhance primary students’ oral English skills through role play, facilitating meaningful language input and output. Implemented in a Chinese context where English language exposure is limited, this qualitative case study, combined with action research, explores how autonomous learning is fostered through RPOEC. The study engaged a Grade Six class of 30 students (25 girls and 5 boys) in northern China, investigating strategies to trigger learners’ interests and form their independent learner identities autonomously, empower learners in their educational journey, encourage reflective practices in oral English learning, and involve learners in evaluative processes. Data, collected through a combination of observations, focus group discussions, and document analysis for three months, were thematically analyzed across four intertwined perspectives: situated learning, interactive communication, cooperative learning, and evaluative discussions. The paper posits that the outlined curricular approach can be tailored to educators’ needs aiming to cultivate students’ oral English skills within a situated, interactive, and collaborative learning environment, pushing learners towards autonomous engagement.

Utilizing Communicative Activities to Teach Oral English Skills to Students at Tuyen Quang School for Excellence (TSE)

This study investigates the efficacy of utilizing communicative activities to enhance oral English skills among students at Tuyen Quang School for Excellence (TSE). Recognizing the paramount importance of oral proficiency in mastering a foreign language, this research aims to address the challenges faced by students in traditional English classrooms where communicative opportunities are limited. Through a structured implementation of various communicative activities, such as role-plays, discussions, and problem-solving tasks, we observed significant improvements in students' speaking abilities. Data were collected through pre- and post-intervention assessments, surveys, and interviews, providing a comprehensive understanding of the impact of these activities. The findings reveal that not only do communicative activities significantly improve oral skills, but they also boost students' confidence and willingness to participate in speaking tasks. This study underscores the necessity of incorporating interactive and student-centered approaches in English language teaching to foster better communicative competence.

Investigating Teachers and Students’ Views on Debate Activities as a Tool to Improve English Speaking Skills: A Case of Rulindo District, Rwanda

This research is entitled ‘investigating teachers and students’ views on debate activities as a tool to improve English-speaking skills. Its main objective was to examine the role of debate activities in the English-speaking proficiency of lower-level secondary school students in Rulindo District. The study was guided by the theory of Vygotsky, titled Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). To achieve the current study’s objective, a technique of questionnaires that contains open-ended and closed-ended questions was used to gather needed information. The research design used was a descriptive research design with a mixed method of data interpretation. The target population was 598, including students, teachers, and school authorities. For the learners’ sampling technique, we purposefully chose all students who participated in debate activities who were equal to 57 students. In this regard, 72 respondents (4 school leaders, 11 teachers, and 57 students) were surveyed. Findings revealed different benefits of participating in debates, including but not limited to acquiring speaking skills, improving critical thinking skills, and enhancing teamwork skills and collaboration. In addition, some challenges are faced, such as anxiety, nervousness, and limited language proficiency. Some strategies to improve oral skills in English, as proposed by the surveyed respondents, include providing practice opportunities and offering constructive feedback. Students were recommended to give value to English, the medium of instruction, and the official language and make efforts to practice through different techniques to learn and improve their oral skills in English. Teachers were recommended to define clear learning objectives for debate activities in English learning and help students make real-world connections through debate.

Voice Typing to Enhance English Intermediate Level Learners’ Speaking Proficiency: A Case Study

This mixed-methods case study explores the effectiveness of Google Docs’ voice typing feature in enhancing the English oral skills of nine university students at the intermediate level. These university students were selected to utilize voice typing for their end-of-term oral presentations, engaging in two practice sessions each week for six weeks period. Training was provided to ensure proficiency in the use of voice typing. To gauge progress, a qualitative analysis of the data was performed, focusing on any advancements in speaking capabilities, with the students’ final speaking project scores serving as the primary metric for evaluation. Evaluation of the final speaking project was conducted by two teachers, and to validate the assessment process, inter-rater reliability tests were implemented. In addition to the quantitative assessment, qualitative data were gathered through interviews, wherein students conveyed their initial challenges with the voice typing feature, particularly concerning speech recognition inaccuracies. Despite these initial hurdles, participants reported a smoother experience as they became more accustomed to the tool. The study underscores the educational benefits of voice typing and advocates for continued investigation into this promising field, particularly given the rise of Artificial Intelligence technologies adept at accommodating diverse accents and proficiency levels.

Effects of age-based stereotype threat on time-based prospective memory.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of a blatant activation of age-based stereotype threats (ABST) on time-based prospective memory (TBPM) in older adults. A sample of 74 adults from Hong Kong was randomly assigned to one of the two experimental conditions: the stereotyped condition (n = 36) or the neutral condition (n = 38). Participants were asked to read fictitious news reports related to dementia (stereotyped condition) or the importance of English oral skills (neutral condition). After, all participants performed a TBPM task using the Chinese lexical decision task as an ongoing task block. The results indicate a main effect of ABST on TBPM accuracy. Specifically, older adults under a blatant activation of ABST demonstrated lower TBPM accuracy (p < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.08). Further analyses based on age groups demonstrated that TBPM accuracy was only impaired in older participants (aged 70-80 years) (p < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.19). The study, for the first time, provides evidence that ABST can disrupt TBPM performance in older adults, especially when cues are blatantly activated.

The Role of Social Life Interests in the Formation of Written and Oral English Skills and Principles Posting it in Educational Materials

If the new educational standard through competencies determines that higher professional education is obliged to create educational materials for the educational process, based on local social and vital interest in a given specialty, medical universities in Kyrgyzstan are not able to do this properly. Since this error is widespread in the field of teaching English, among Kyrgyz youth the ability to use written language in English cannot provide an indicator of competence defined by the educational standard, as a result, the linguistic speech-communicative and professional competencies of students remain related to the English language at a very low level. The article analyzes situations in solving these issues, and also focuses on the principles and criteria for choosing educational materials for teaching English to medical students in Kyrgyzstan.

Rethinking Communicative Language Teaching in College English Teaching: Strategies and Lesson Plan

Oral English competence is crucial for the learners’ life and potential professional success. Numerous studies on communicative language teaching were conducted; however, there is a dearth of literature on the application of CLT strategies in Chinese vocational colleges. The objective of this study was to identify CLT techniques that can improve the oral English skills of vocational college students in China. Specifically, it sought to answer the following: (1) What CLT strategies can be adapted for improving the oral proficiency of Chinese vocational college students? (2) What activities can be designed integrating adapted CLT strategies to help enhance Chinese vocational college students’ oral proficiency? The study made use of a developmental research design using systematic document analysis as the method. Findings showed that group-oriented CLT strategies like role-play, pair and group work, interviews, information gap activities, etc., and individual-oriented CLT tactics like storytelling, picture description, and opinion-sharing activities can be adapted to improve Chinese vocational college students’ oral proficiency. To help enhance Chinese vocational college students’ oral proficiency, communicative language activities that integrate these identified CLT strategies were designed as instructors’ guide in implementing CLT. Teachers are the primary change agents in educational practice, only by being more aware of what is truly going on in their classrooms can they assist students to achieve their learning goals. In the hands of a well-balanced instructor, CLT can breathe new life and enthusiasm into the classroom and truly make a difference in enhancing student’s oral proficiency.

Enjoyment and oral English proficiency in future teachers

This study analyzed the relationship between enjoyment and oral English proficiency in Peruvian future teachers. It previously validated a measurement instrument of enjoyment setting for future teachers who are learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and then delved into understanding the role of enjoyment as a predictor of oral proficiency. The sample comprised 119 students from a State Higher School of Education in Peru, randomly selected from various careers and grouped according to English language competency levels ranging from A1 to B1+ based on a subscale inspired by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students’ oral proficiency was evaluated using a rubric covering five aspects, and enjoyment was assessed through a nine-question questionnaire. The results initially demonstrated a significant positive relationship (r = 0.900, p &amp;lt; 0.001) between enjoyment and oral proficiency in EFL. Secondly, a linear regression model determined that enjoyment was a highly significant predictor (β = 0.957, p &amp;lt; 0.001) of oral proficiency. These findings support the importance of enjoyment in developing oral proficiency as a reliable tool to predict oral proficiency in EFL in the context of EFL teacher education. This study highlighted a significant influence of enjoyment on oral proficiency in learning EFL to prospective teachers. Results analysis underscored the importance of enjoyment as a significant predictor of oral proficiency, suggesting that promoting enjoyment in the learning and teaching process can be an effective strategy to foster significant development of oral skills in English. These findings have significant implications for teacher education, emphasizing the need to integrate activities and psycho-pedagogical approaches that promote enjoyment in the English classroom. Furthermore, the proposed model was validated as a reliable tool to assess teachers’ enjoyment of learning EFL. Understanding and nurturing enjoyment in learning English can significantly enhance the oral English proficiency of future teachers and, ultimately, contribute to a more robust command of the EFL.

Innovative Practice of Multimodal Teaching Mode in English Education and Teaching Practice in Colleges and Universities in the New Media Era

Abstract Traditional English teaching methods are increasingly seen as outdated, failing to adequately develop students’ language abilities. This study introduces a multimodal teaching approach, evaluated through the innovative use of the sailfish optimization algorithm to gauge student attitudes towards this educational innovation. Additionally, the study leverages a genetically optimized CARMA algorithm to analyze academic achievement data, identifying optimal strategies for enhancing learning outcomes. Results indicate a significant improvement in students’ oral English skills, with approximately 70% reporting progress and 86 students endorsing the multimodal approach. Post-implementation test scores across five classes showed an impressive range of 85-97, with Classes A and B demonstrating significant score improvements (p-values of 0.021 and 0.014, respectively). The successful application of this novel teaching method in collegiate settings underscores its potential for broader adoption and highlights its relevance for modernizing educational practices across various subjects.

Spanish Phonological Awareness in Kindergarten Uniquely Supports Second-Grade English Morphological Awareness in Spanish-English Dual Language Learners.

This study investigated the longitudinal, cross-linguistic developmental relationships of phonological awareness (PA), letter identification (letter ID), and morphological awareness (MA) in 71 heritage Spanish-English dual language learners (DLLs) in kindergarten and second grade. Multiple linear regression was used to test if kindergarten Spanish and English PA (sound elision and sound matching) and letter ID significantly predicted later English MA (oral derived word stress judgment, oral derivational morpheme blending, written derived word decomposition, and morphologically complex word spelling) performance in second grade. Cross-linguistically, the PA skill of sound matching in kindergarten was the most reliable predictor of MA in second grade for Spanish-English DLLs. Spanish PA explained the majority of variation in oral MA skills in English. English PA was only uniquely predictive of written MA skills in English. Both the cognitive operation of sound sequence manipulation in PA (elision or matching) and the modality of morpheme representation in MA (oral or written) appear to mediate the transfer of metalinguistic knowledge in Spanish-English DLL development in early elementary school. Results are discussed within the context of classroom practices.

Enhancing English Oral Skills among Malaysian Rural School Students through the Implementation of Virtual Reality (VR)

This research aims to determine the perception of rural secondary school students on the implementation of virtual reality (VR) as an alternative to the traditional classroom setting, more specifically in the setting of an oral skill lesson. In addition, the perception of the students includes the general perception, motivation levels, interest as well as the skill development of the students when subjected to a VR classroom and their effects on the mentioned aspects. A total of 39 respondents from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Desa Kencana were involved in this research. This study employed a multi-method research design. Based on the results, it is found that the perception of the respondents was generally quite positive and a majority preferred a VR environment compared to a traditional setting in the context of learning speaking skills. Respondents have stated that the interactivity and new experience presented with the VR environment brings new light to their motivation and interest and they showed a keen interest in learning English compared to traditional settings. However, there are several subjects who view the implementation in a negative light, as would be portrayed in the data findings. In conclusion, both research objectives were answered, and several implications were discovered. Several suggestions are recommended in order to further this topic at the end of the research. In conclusion, this research believes that the implementation of VR would be able to increase the motivation, interest and skill development of ESL learners, specifically in speaking skills and therefore investigate whether VR classrooms appear as a better alternative to our current learning environment.

This study compares and contrasts the speaking activities that are regularly assigned to students in the classroom and explores how both teachers and students view the program's overall worth. The research uses experimental design as its methodology. Students who were enrolled in the first semester of the academic year 2021–2022 made up the study's population. The purposive sampling strategy was used by the current researcher. The researcher participated in two courses with a combined total of 80 students as samples for this study. The outcomes of this study are anticipated to provide important data and make a substantial addition to linguistic research, particularly in the field of language instruction. This study's sole objective was to use Semantics Networking Techniques to improve the students' oral English skills. The findings of this study highlight the significance of communicative language, language learning approaches, and semantic networking strategies in fostering students' development in various fields.&#x0D;

Albanian immigrant beliefs about emotion, language, and social identity: Examining the workplace nuances of upward social mobility

The present study seeks to advance scientific discussion about language, emotion, and migration through two in-depth portrayals of adult Albanian immigrants who self-reported personal beliefs about emotions in their language usage, social identity, and motivation for workplace success. Data-collection implemented a qualitative case-study approach with multiple interviews and observations. Participants revealed how certain emotions held compelling connections to their core beliefs about language usage in the workplace setting. The perceptions about second-language (L2) usage and emotion revealed key features about personal identity. Participants had frustrations about their transnational cultural adjustments and viewed the pursuit of English fluency as essential for their career success. Results revealed how interpersonal communication in the workplace involved more anxiety than any other setting. Some of these incongruencies might seem innocuous to native-language English speakers, such as how misinterpreting jokes in the English-speaking workplace were revealed to be a source of frustration for the L2 speakers. Participants feared being informally evaluated for their oral English skills, and purposely avoided using their native Albanian language because they believed such language usage could be detrimental for their employment. This study should be of interest to anyone seeking to examine emotional geographies within L2 processes for immigrant populations.

Capturing the teaching of English oral skills in an Indonesian university: classroom activities and pedagogical challenges

In the context of English as a foreign language, listening and speaking skills are frequently discussed in isolation. In fact, to improve students' language mastery, the skills had better be taught in an integrated way. This research aimed to unveil activities for teaching oral skills that teachers implemented and discussed their challenges in the implementation. The data of this case study were obtained by observing three classes and interviewing three university teachers who taught integrated listening and speaking skills in an English language education department of a university in Indonesia. To analyze data gained from the interview, we used open, analytical, axial, and selective coding to identify the emerged themes using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that discussion, information gap, role play and simulation, and oral presentation were applied in the classrooms. The study also revealed that the challenges of applying the activities come not only from the students' side, such as their anxieties, low participation, and tendency to use their first language, but also from the teachers' part regarding their classroom management skills. Those findings implied that the success of oral skill instruction is achievable through various activities that involve students' listening and speaking skills at once.

Investigation of English Oral Skills and Learning Motivation in Rwanda Polytechnic Colleges: The Case of IPRC Ngoma

English language has become a language of instruction in Rwanda over the last few decades, and students and graduates are supposed to be fluent in it at the moment. However, the literature indicate that employers are not satisfied with the level of English oral skills of graduates from IPRCs in the job. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the students’ level in English oral skills and what motivates them to learn English language. Using an explanatory mixed methods design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected data by means of questionnaires. Questionnaires were administered to three (3) English lecturers of English language and sixty (60) students from different departments in IPRC Ngoma.&#x0D; The findings indicate that the students’ level in English oral skills is good. It was also found that students are extrinsically motivated to learn English language and the reasons for their motivation are associated with instrumental reasons where English would help them in their future career of learning and integrative benefits where English will help them exchange information with people from different parts of the world.
