The article presents the results of a discursive analysis of online articles on foreign language learning. The analysis continues the study of the English popular science pedagogical discourse, complementing the number of already identified and characterized components with discourse strategies. The aim of the paper is to identify and analyze the strategies of the popular science pedagogical internet discourse which would expand scientific ideas about the interaction peculiarities between the pedagogical community and society. As practical material, the study uses one of the most famous English online magazines dedicated to language learning. By random sampling, 70 text fragments are selected from the magazine, exhibiting the whole variety of speech means the pedagogical community uses to cover its intentions and values. To achieve the aim set in the research, the authors use linguapragmatic, linguasemiotic, discursive analysis and descriptive, analytical, interpretive, statistical methods. As a result of the analysis, the strategies of attracting attention, modality, transmitting reliability, forming professional identity, solidarity, manipulation and consolidation have been established. Each strategy reveals its own means of speech implementation, among which we can name various verbal constructions, appealing constructions, constructions emphasizing causes and consequences of educational processes, evaluating lexemes, lexemes with semantics of inducement to action, etc. The range of communication strategies and means of their verbalization is not limited to those given in the paper. In order to describe the model of the popular science pedagogical discourse existing not only in the English internet space, the need for further analysis of the research subject is obvious.

Examining the Interplay of Sociodemographic and Sociotechnical Factors on Users’ Perceived Digital Skills

The rapid pace of technological advancements of the last decades, accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, has increased the importance of digital skills for individuals, businesses, and society. However, despite efforts to increase digital ownership and educational initiatives, the digital divide remains a persistent issue and a barrier to social inclusion. Digital exclusion is not limited to access vs. no access but encompasses a spectrum of participation influenced by factors such as geographical location, skills, motivation, and identity. The study explores what sociodemographic and sociotechnical aspects shape users’ digital skills. It is based on an online survey of English internet users aged between 20–55 with school-aged children (<em>N</em> = 2,004), to measure their digital skills across six dimensions and analyzes the relationship between these skills and sociodemographic and sociotechnical variables. Results show that among the sociodemographic aspects, including gender, age, education level, employment status, income, and residential area, only income significantly contributes to distinguishing groups per level of digital skills. The study also shows that motivation gap, access gap, usage gap, and social support, are all associated with individuals’ digital skills.

A Comparative Analysis of Chinese and English Internet Popular Words in 2023 from a Sociolinguistic Perspective

This study conducts a comparative analysis of Chinese and English Internet buzzwords from 2023 using a sociolinguistic lens to explore their reflection and influence on respective cultural and social contexts. Internet buzzwords, as linguistic phenomena, encapsulate the dynamic interplay between language innovation and societal trends, offering insights into cross-cultural communication and the pervasive impact of digitalization. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the study analyzed data sourced from national and international digital media platforms. Findings reveal distinct cultural predilections: Chinese buzzwords largely underscore collective values and traditional sensibilities, while English buzzwords tend to highlight individualism and personal authenticity. The study underscores the role of language as a cultural artifact, shaped by and shaping social identities in a globalized discourse, thereby contributing to sociolinguistic theory by illustrating how language both influences and is influenced by socio-technological evolutions.

Extracting intersectional stereotypes from embeddings: Developing and validating the Flexible Intersectional Stereotype Extraction procedure.

Social group-based identities intersect. The meaning of "woman" is modulated by adding social class as in "rich woman" or "poor woman." How does such intersectionality operate at-scale in everyday language? Which intersections dominate (are most frequent)? What qualities (positivity, competence, warmth) are ascribed to each intersection? In this study, we make it possible to address such questions by developing a stepwise procedure, Flexible Intersectional Stereotype Extraction (FISE), applied to word embeddings (GloVe; BERT) trained on billions of words of English Internet text, revealing insights into intersectional stereotypes. First, applying FISE to occupation stereotypes across intersections of gender, race, and class showed alignment with ground-truth data on occupation demographics, providing initial validation. Second, applying FISE to trait adjectives showed strong androcentrism (Men) and ethnocentrism (White) in dominating everyday English language (e.g. White + Men are associated with 59% of traits; Black + Women with 5%). Associated traits also revealed intersectional differences: advantaged intersectional groups, especially intersections involving Rich, had more common, positive, warm, competent, and dominant trait associates. Together, the empirical insights from FISE illustrate its utility for transparently and efficiently quantifying intersectional stereotypes in existing large text corpora, with potential to expand intersectionality research across unprecedented time and place. This project further sets up the infrastructure necessary to pursue new research on the emergent properties of intersectional identities.

A Study on the Main Characteristics of English Internet Terms and Chinese Translation Strategies

Nowadays, globalization and informatization are deepening through social media, and the way people communicate with each other has also changed dramatically. Thus, many Internet expressions were born. The study of network language plays an important role in communicating with the world, recognizing the diversity of the world and language learning. In daily life, people often use it directly, but if more words are not translated and understood, their scope of use will have great limitations. There are three topics discussed in this paper: the main characteristics of Internet slang and phrases and abbreviations of modern society, the corresponding spoken phenomenon, and Chinese Translation Strategies for Internet Terms. It involves analysis of word meanings, vocabulary statistics, collection and classification and synchronic research using main social media Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. It could be seen that no matter whether people think internet slang vitalizes or destroys language, there's no denying how revealing it is of the culture that invents and uses it -- and the ease with which people adapt their language to new technologies and concepts.

Comparative analysis of memes in Russian- and English-language internet space

The article deals with creolized memes in Russian and English Internet space, which are defined as memes that include a linguistic and visual component and carry a semantic load. Both of these components can also carry semantic load, endow it with its own meaning and also influence the interpretation of the creolized text. The general features of this type of text in both language cultures under consideration are outlined, a comparative analysis of creolized memes in Russian and English languages is carried out, the peculiarities of Russian and English Internet communication in terms of themes, forms of the comic, and methods of creating a comic effect are considered. The examples of memes given in the article are based on language play, and the graphic patterns considered express satirical and ironic forms of the comic on the Internet

A Study on the Translation of English Network Terms in the Age of Social Media

Abstract In the era of social media, the Internet has given rise to network language, and English network terms have gradually become popular, which are not only easy to understand but also rich in interest and highly favored by the majority of Internet users. In this paper, after systematically integrating the translation features and translation strategies of English network terms in the social media era, we build a social network terminology database based on NILE automatic recognition technology and propose a machine translation method based on the features of English network terms and migration learning. The translation results show that the model of this paper has the highest average BLEU value of 16.02% for the translation of the target network terminology, and the model of this paper has the least frequency of BLEU value of 0% for each translation, which is 2 times, and it has the best ability of “bottoming out”. In addition, the model can skillfully transform verbs and pronouns and is good at translating special words such as superlatives so as to make the translations closer to the expression habits of the target language and meet the social needs of the English Internet language.

Linguocreative word-formation devices in political anthroponyms (the case of English internet memes)

The article looks at the linguocreative word-formation devices in political anthroponyms within the context of English internet memes. The research is relevant due to the existing necessity to thoroughly research linguistic creativity at the level of word formation in English internet communication. The methods used in the research include collecting and analysing empirical material, word formation analysis, definitional analysis, linguocreative analysis, discourse analysis, linguocultural analysis, semantic analysis. The results of the research show that such linguocreative word formation devices as the generation of linguocreative occasional telescopic lexemes derived from two derivational bases, linguocreative transformations of anthroponyms based on paronymic attraction and language game with abbreviations are widely spread in English memes. Telescopy is a word formation process which involves generating a linguocreative occasional lexeme derived from two anthroponyms. Linguocreative transformations of anthroponyms based on paronymic attraction entail the deformation of an anthroponym in order to show resemblance to a similar word for creating a pragmatic effect. Language game with abbreviations functions as a linguocreative ‘decoding’ of a political anthroponym, as a result of which the author provides the recipient with an original and usually humorous interpretation of the precedent name. According to the research, the derivatives, generated with the help of the above mentioned devices, have broad semantics, connotations and pragmatic underpinning. To conclude, English internet memes act as a platform for linguocreative word formation processes, furthermore, political anthroponyms have a strong linguocreative potential. The results obtained in the research can be successfully applied in the educational process on the theoretical level and in English language teaching.

Structural Dynamics of Network Frames in the Context of the Legitimacy Crisis in Libyan Jamahiriya (based on the Internet comments)

The article deals with the English Internet comments viewed as non-professional political discourse of everyday network communication. In these comments the videos on the legitimacy crisis in Libya in the early 2010s are discussed. Considering the array of commentary texts as a conceptual system, we study the non-professional political discourse related to the Libyan crisis in terms of frame analysis. Since the consequences of this crisis are felt in the world politics to this day, the users keep commenting on it regularly, it makes it possible to study the dynamics of the conceptual discursive structures. For the purpose we chose frames as mental models that allow us to study linguistic consciousness by dividing texts into fragments reflecting the accumulated knowledge and experience of a person about stereotypical situations. Frame modeling is carried out with the help of the FrameNet frame base. Variants of frame models constructed through the analysis of the network discursive material, are called network frames. The study of comments relating to different periods of time allows us to identify the dynamics of the changes in the structure and content of the key frames that describe the legitimacy crisis in Libya.

The aim of the study is to identify the phatic language means used in the headlines of media texts posted on the Internet in Russian, English and Chuvash. The paper characterises in a comparative aspect the features peculiar to the repertoire of the phatic means that are in demand among modern journalists, representatives of different national-linguistic communities. The paper is novel in that it is the first to analyse phatic means using the material of Russian, English and Chuvash media speech in order to determine language specificity of the linguistic phenomenon under consideration. As a result, it has been found that colons, contextually conveying expression, as well as stylistically modified precedent phenomena are used in the phatic function in the headlines of media texts in Russian. Informal syntax constructions are employed in this capacity in the English-language and the Chuvash-language headlines, the latter also use intentionally distorted precedent vocabulary and the technique of citation. The fact that in order to establish contact with readers, the headlines are formulated according to the principle of language game represents the basis of interlanguage similarity.

Polarized Discourses of Abortion in English: A Corpus-based Study of Semantic Prosody and Discursive Salience

Abstract Amidst ongoing global debate about reproductive rights, questions have emerged about the role of language in reinforcing stigma around termination. Amongst some ‘pro-choice’ groups, the use of pro-life is discouraged, and anti-abortion is recommended. In UK official documents, termination of pregnancy is generally used, and abortion is avoided. Lack of empirical research focused on lexis means it is difficult to draw conclusions about the role language plays in this polarized debate, however. This paper, therefore, explores whether the stigma associated with abortion may reflect negative semantic prosody. Synthesizing quantitative corpus linguistic methods and qualitative discourse analysis, it presents findings that indicate that abortion has unfavourable semantic prosody in a corpus of contemporary internet English. These findings are considered in relation to discursive salience, offering a theoretical framework and operationalization of this theory. Through this lens, the paper considers whether the discursive salience of extreme anti-abortion discourses may strengthen the negative semantic prosody of abortion. It, therefore, combines a contribution to theory around semantic prosody with a caution to those using abortion whilst unaware of its possibly unfavourable semantic prosody.

ЛІНГВІСТИЧНІ ОСОБЛИВОСТІ АНГЛОМОВНОГО ІНТЕРНЕТ-ДИСКУРСУ

The thesis is devoted to the study of the linguistic features of Internet discourse at the lexical, graphic, and grammatical levels. The changes that caused the active spread of social networks and websites in English are analyzed in detail. A well-grounded analysis of lexical-semantic and graphic means of online communication made it possible to understand the trends of popular social networks in more detail. The English language has been directly and powerfully influenced by online communication. Social consolidation factors have determined the main influence of the English language on the Internet in general. Being the territorial native language of the founders of famous websites and social networks, it is used most actively. English-speaking users were among the first to have access to virtual communication and laid the foundation for the creation, development and spread of the Internet language. This explains the special attention of linguists to English-language platforms. The general features of the Internet English language, which is characterized by changes at the lexical, grammatical or graphic levels, have been studied. The conducted linguistic analysis of posts on popular social networks revealed the following patterns of English-language Internet discourse, namely: 1) the use of a large number of neologisms (formed by affixation and word formation); 2) frequent use of acronyms and abbreviations; 3) pseudonyms (or nicknames) are an important feature of communication on the Internet or chat; 4) special cases of using punctuation marks, lowercase and uppercase letters, emoticons (smilies) and non-alphabetic graphic signs; 5) capitalization, hyphenation, various types of memes and gifs were detected; creolized memes are the most common; 6) at the grammatical level, frequent omission of punctuation and violation of grammatical norms of the English language. Interaction on the Internet often replaces real communication needs. Internet English reflects the general tendency to economize language and illustrates the creativity and originality of Internet users.

‘I am very emo’

The contemporary expansion of English is becoming remarkably rapid and exceptionally global (Ostler, 2011). In present-day China, English has gained unprecedented popularity, fueled by the nation's current political and social development (Bolton & Graddol, 2012). There is a notable trend of bilingual education using English as a medium of instruction in Chinese schools (Wei, 2013). Therefore, an increasing number of Chinese are enthusiastic about learning and using English in communication. With the active participation of youths, ‘Internet English’ has been used widely in social networking spaces. The practice of ‘English mixing’ in various Chinese homegrown social networking sites has become the most remarkable intranational use of English in today's mainland China (Zhang, 2012). Interestingly, youngsters1 often create novel meanings when using languages on the Internet as ‘teenagers are well-known for introducing innovations into language, and indeed are generally regarded as prime agents of language change’ (Palacios Martínez, 2018: 363). Many linguistic studies have dealt with the mechanisms of the evolution of word meanings in past decades (Kachru, 1983; Qin & Guo, 2020; Tan, 2009; Yang, 2005). Much evidence indicates that meanings and usages of words are variable and composite, and may turn out differently depending on how words are used in contexts.

FBO‐RNN: Fuzzy butterfly optimization‐based RNN‐LSTM for extracting sentiments from Twitter Emoji database

SummarySocial media networks have seen a significant increase in purpose and scale. Sentimental analysis is a component of social networking platforms that uses shared material to infer information about individual sentiments and emotions. In recent years, sentiment analysis (SA) research has grown in popularity. Twitter is the most popular social media platform, with users from many languages and cultures participating. Emojis are used by users to express themselves, and social media platforms contain a wide range of symbols, emotions, and opinions. A novel framework for SA based on Emojis is presented in this article. Initially, the noise‐free videos and images are filtered. The dictionary of Jieba was obtained by adding the English Emoji lexicon and English Internet slang lexicon to segment English text. Initially, the Emojis are converted into textual features. Different sentiment classes such as positive, very positive, neutral, negative, and very negative classes are classified using long short‐term memory (LSTM) in the recurrent neural network (RNN)‐based Fuzzy Butterfly Optimization (FBO) algorithm. The freeware WEKA software tool with different evaluation measures performs experimental investigations. Ultimately, the proposed model demonstrates superior results in the case of SA than other state‐of‐the‐art methods.

Actualization of Evaluativity as a Qualitative Category in the Discourse of English Internet Film Review

Introduction. The article presents the results of the analysis aimed at identifying actualization methods of evaluativity as a qualitative category within the frames of the evaluative subgenres of expert and professional film reviews. The author assumes that evaluativity serves as a method of explicating subject's attitude towards the content of the film. The relevance of the study is determined by a lack of research dedicated to the analysis of the methods expressing author’s position within the evaluative genre of internet film review. The interconnection of evaluativity category, subject factor and modus as a method of explicating subjective meanings of the statement are analyzed.Methodology and sources. The methodology of the research is based on the classification of evaluative meanings developed by N. Arutyunova. The research methodology includes PoS tagging of the texts, identification of evaluative units including qualitative adjectives and adverbs, as well as description and comparison of leading evaluation types that actualize author's position. The methodology was studied using the example of a text corpora consisting of expert and professional film reviews extracted from the web archive of the journal of Film Criticism and the website metacritic.com.Results and discussion. With the implementation of PoS tagging and quantitative method of analysis leading evaluation categories within the corpora of the professional and expert film reviews were described and compared. The results have shown that the leading type of evaluation within the frames of the referred evaluative subgenres is represented by the emotional evaluation category. The results have also indicated that the leading evaluation types of expert evaluative discourse include prescriptive and ethical evaluation, whereas professional evaluative discourse is characterized by the prevalence of generalized evaluative units.Conclusion. The analysis allowed the author to conclude that the referred genres are characterized mainly by increased expressivity and emotiveness. However, author’s position actualization in the discourse of expert film review implicates detailed analysis of structural contents of the presented norms, as well as content of the film, whereas the discourse of professional film review is characterized by increased generalization tendency, which implicates low degree of authors’ competency.

КСЕНОЛОГІЯ ЖІНОЧОГО: УКРАЇНСЬКІ ЖІНКИ В УЯВЛЕННЯХ КИТАЙСЬКОЇ МОЛОДІ

The article represents results of a socio-philosophical study of the ideas of educated Chinese youth about modern Ukrainian women. The survey had been carried out on Summer 2023 during a full-scale Russian war against Ukraine. At the same time, we proceeded from the standpoint of the current state of Ukrainian-Chinese relations and the least possible politicization of the survey. The study involved an analysis of associations and was an in-depth loosely coupled interview with a orientative set of questions. The guide-interview was written in Ukrainian and English, with subsequent translation into Chinese. It is important for research that the interviewer was a woman. The interview was conducted by the Chinese co-author of this article under usual conditions. The answers were translated into Ukrainian. Direct translation of some answers was quite difficult, so clarifications and explanations were made in English. The research is socio-philosophical and does not fully correspond to sociological canons. The sources of the formation of these ideas were also investigated. In particular, coverage of the status of Ukrainian women during the Russian war in the Chinese segment of the Internet in English and Chinese. The article demonstrates how the publications available on the sites outline ideas about modern women and then broadcasted by young people in the form of concepts, lines of thought, contexts and accents. By definition of xenology the author means the direction of socio-philosophical searches aimed at understanding the "outlying", "other" and "different". In the course of the research, it was found that the characteristics of Ukrainian women do not contain signs of "alien" or "enemy". It has been demonstrated that the socio-cultural space of Chinese youth is permeated with various stereotypes, among which gender stereotypes occupy a leading place. The need for further research into an important problem for Chinese youth – surrogate motherhood – had been well-founded. It had been noted that the study of stereotypes requires a methodology that uses intersectionality and is based on an interdisciplinary approach. The study had confirmed that socio-philosophical analysis based on an intersectional approach can serve the interdisciplinary transfer of experimental data in gender studies.

The Significance of Semiotics in English Internet Memes

The purpose of this article is to research the semiotics of English memes in order to identify their main characteristics, structure, and distribution. Studying the semiotics of memes can help us understand how they spread and influence public opinion. Analyzing English memes can provide insight into the cultural specialness of English countries. The main research methods used in this article include data collection through content analysis, comparative analysis of various social communities, analysis of social networks, and investigation of meme history
