Effects of Welfare Facilities (Amenities for Well-Being) on the Satisfaction of Civil Engineers in Construction Industry

ABSTRACT The construction industry plays an important role in the upliftment of a country’s economy. Thus, the satisfaction of workers in the construction industry is of prime importance, since it is believed that satisfied working staff will be more efficient and effective. Therefore, it becomes crucial to understand the factors that may influence the satisfaction of the workforce. Among these factors, recently, welfare facilities have received much attention. In this study, welfare facilities such as health, hygiene, eating, drinking, resting, safety, and transportation play a vital role in the satisfaction of workers in the construction industry. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 203 civil engineers in Balochistan, Pakistan. The data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Consequently, the empirical findings indicated that providing welfare facilities have a significant positive impact on the satisfaction of workers. Additionally, the results indicate that among the facilities, transportation and hygiene facilities are the major requirements of civil engineers. Hence, it can be concluded from the findings that organizations that are involved in construction projects, wish to increase the satisfaction of workers and success rate, they should focus on providing welfare facilities to their employees.

Mapping the Needs for Trained Lighting Engineers in Construction Industry: The First Outcomes from ECOSLIGHT Skills Alliances European Project

The construction sector faces new challenges in order to provide smart, energy efficient and sustainable lighting environments for infrastructure, cities, buildings and the industry, in order to follow the 2050 low-carbon economy roadmap of the European Commission. In parallel, the Environmentally Conscious Smart Lighting (ECOSLIGHT) project aims to design training programs in lighting that will actively enhance employability and improve career prospects of lighting-related professionals, while also help businesses to find the right competences they need to increase their competitiveness. In this paper, by analysing critically the 438 collected answers though on-line ECOSLIGHT original developed questionnaire, we were able to understand clearly what are the needs of the sector for well-trained lighting professionals and indent the training needs for future lighting professionals who want find jobs in the sector. Further, we could establish standard “job-profiles” for two of the most popular need lighting professionals: lighting designers and lighting system engineers.

Waste Products as an Alternative Construction Material-A Review

The world’s economy is based on the infrastructure of the country. Ancient history shows that old construction works are done with surki and lime but not with sand. Sand is used only after introduction of cement in construction industry. Worldwide sand is used as fine aggregate in concrete and average of 40 billion tones of natural sand is used annually. This large amount of consumption reduced the water table amount and destroys the flora and fauna of the biodiversity. So alternative construction materials identification for natural sand plays a major role for civil engineers in construction industry for sustainable environment. The main objective of this study is to find the optimum percentage of replacement with waste products to alter the fine aggregate.

Challenges Facing Graduate Structural Engineers in the Building Construction Industry in Kenya

Despite a number of challenges, training institution Kenya has produced structural engineers in the building and construction field. As a result, there have been problems facing these apprentices that have led to questions concerning their competencies in the Kenyan building and construction industry. Mitigating such foreseeable problems, require proper policy planning, which can only be enacted after findings of facts have been adduced. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine the challenges facing university trained structural engineers in the construction industry in Kenya. The research design in the study was cross-sectional survey research design. Purposive sampling was employed in collecting the data. The study population comprised practicing structural engineers trained at the universities offering building construction, civil engineering and structural engineering. Questionnaires were used to collected data from the sampled respondents in the building industry. Proportional analysis techniques and statistical chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Information on problems facing the engineers and perception of the engineering graduates concerning university training were collected from 89 Kenyan university trained practicing Structural engineers. The data collected was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS 23.0) presented inform of descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations, frequency distribution, cross-tabulation and Chi-square (c2) tests. The results obtained revealed that, graduates had problems related to initial choice of the course, for which they did not have interest in and hence poor content coverage. These results demonstrate the need for establishment of a clear policy aimed at regulating the learning resources for structural engineers at the universities appropriately. Moreover, there is need for standard resources for the teaching of the programme and the need for higher educational funding scheme for research in the universities.

The knowledge competency of civil engineers in construction industry

Construction management’s knowledge is basis knowledge for one who works as civil engineer in construction industry. A good construction management will make the progressing of the project is more efficient and follow as in the plan also fulfill the customer needed as in the contract. The weak management will cause problem at site such as the delay, over budgeting and so on. As a civil engineer that involve direct with the site activities, they need to master this knowledge to manage the project. The purposes for this research are to identify and to determine the knowledge that a civil engineer in construction industry should have to be a competent engineer. The data collections are taken from the respondents who work as civil engineer with contractor class G6 and G7 in Penang state. The importance of this research is to determine the best knowledge characteristics that will be used for nowadays civil engineer. They will apply this knowledge during manage any project. The result from the survey will be compared with the data that get from the literature review. This is to identify the latest knowledge to be a guideline to become a competent engineer. From the result of the survey, mostly respondents who are civil engineers that involve in construction activities in Penang agree that have the knowledgeable in technical knowledge, decision making knowledge, teamwork knowledge planning and scheduling knowledge also leadership knowledge is very important to be a competent engineer.

A Holistic Energy Pattern in Green Building

BEE project is a category of complicated and systematic engineering in construction industry, not only concerned with alleviation of energy shortage pressure and melioration of residential conditions, but also related to both sustainable development of low carbon society and promotion of circular economy. Three main parts including green building, renewable and clean energy technologies and environmental protection are analyzed and studied in a holistic way. In general, energy-saving technologies and energy management pattern have been researched in detail based on general building energy efficiency theory, so as to effectively promote building energy-efficient application system.

Professional Development of Female Engineers in the Thai Construction Industry

Abstract Although the number of female civil engineers in the Thai construction industry has been on the rise for over a decade, there have not been sufficient studies regarding their career advancement once they have entered the industry. In Thailand, the construction industry is associated with male domination, characterized by physical strength, adaptation to harsh outdoor working conditions, and abusive language. As such, career advancement for female engineers in the construction industry poses a considerable challenge. In this paper, an empirical review of operational roles of professional women within the Thai construction industry is presented. Findings from a pilot study indicated that the lack of fieldwork knowledge was the most serious problem, preventing women not only from career advancement but also from performing their work effectively. This stemmed from two main factors, namely their refusal to perform site-based work, and the lack of opportunities to perform site-based work.
