From modeling and simulation to Digital Twin: evolution or revolution?

As digitalization is permeating all sectors of society toward the concept of “smart everything,” and virtual technologies and data are gaining a dominant place in the engineering and control of intelligent systems, the Digital Twin (DT) concept has surfaced as one of the top technologies to adopt. This paper discusses the DT concept from the viewpoint of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) experts. It both provides literature review elements and adopts a commentary-driven approach. We first examine the DT from a historical perspective, tracing the historical development of M&S from its roots in computational experiments to its applications in various fields and the birth of DT-related and allied concepts. We then approach DTs as an evolution of M&S, acknowledging the overlap in these different concepts. We also look at the M&S workflow and its evolution toward a DT workflow from a software engineering perspective, highlighting significant changes. Finally, we look at new challenges and requirements DTs entail, potentially leading to a revolutionary shift in M&S practices. In this way, we hope to foster the discussion on DTs and provide the M&S expert with innovative perspectives.

2023 2nd International Symposium on Intelligent Unmanned Systems and Artificial Intelligence (SIUSAI 2023) was held in Shenzhen, China, on April 21-23, 2023.It aims to bring scientists, researchers, practitioners and industry delegates from academia and industry together to exchange and share their latest research and experiences in the field of Unmanned Systems and Artificial Intelligence. The conference is expected to provide opportunities for advances and collaborations in this field.SIUSAI 2023 is organized by Southwest University of Science and Technology School of Computer Science and Technology, Southwest University of Science and Technology School of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, co-organized by Hohai University, Key Laboratory of Testing for Manufacturing Process, Ministry of Education, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Sichuan Big Data and Intelligent System Engineering Technology Research Center, The International Association of Electrical, Electronic and Energy Engineering (IAEEEE), and supported by CoreShare Academy Exchange Center.The conference contained one day of registration and two full-days program consisting of keynote lectures, oral presentations, video presentations and poster presentations. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our keynote speakers Pro. Arg2P: an argumentation framework for explainable intelligent systems

Abstract In this paper we present the computational model of Arg2P, a logic-based argumentation framework for defeasible reasoning and agent conversation particularly suitable for explaining agent intelligent behaviours. The model is reified as the Arg2P technology, which is presented and discussed both from an architectural and a technological perspective so as to point out its potential in the engineering of intelligent systems. Finally, an illustrative application scenario is discussed in the domain of computable law for autonomous vehicles.

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 5th International Workshop on Advanced Algorithms and Control Engineering (IWAACE 2021) on February 26-28, 2021, which is planned to held in Zhuhai, China. However, due to the spread of COVID-19, many countries have strict restrictions to travel aboard. Meanwhile, the safety of the participants is always the priority. We made a hard decision to hold the conference online.IWAACE 2021 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Advanced Algorithms and Control Engineering to a common forum. The primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in Advanced Algorithms and Control Engineering and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world. The conference will be held every year to make it an ideal platform for people to share views and experiences in Algorithms and Control Engineering and related areas.This scientific event brings together more than 120 national and international researchers. During the conference, the conference model was divided into three sessions, including oral presentations, keynote speeches, and online Q&A discussion. In the first part, some scholars, whose submissions were selected as the excellent papers, were given about 5-10 minutes to perform their oral presentations one by one. Then in the second part, keynote speakers were each allocated 30-45 minutes to hold their speeches.In the second part, we invited four professors as our keynote speakers. Prof. Xinguo Yu, the dean and Professor of CCNU Wollongong Joint Institute and Professor of National Engineering Research Center for E-Learning Adjunct professor of University of Wollongong, Australia, performed a speech: Automatic Problem Solving for Basic Education. And then we had Assoc. Prof. Xiang Zhou from School of Data Science, City University of Hong Kong, China. He presented a talk: Machine Learning and Control Theory. He introduced the recent ongoing joint work with Alain Bensoussan and Phillip Yam about a new numerical method for computing the gradient of the value function. Dr. Deepak Kumar Jain, School of Automation, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecomunications, Chongqing, China as our third keynote speakers. Our finale keynote speakers, Dr. Badrul Hisham bin Ahmad, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka / Faculty of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Malaysia was invited to present his talk Design and Development of VHF FRONT-END for lightning interferometer system. Their insightful speeches had triggered heated discussion in the third session of the conference. Every participant praised this conference for disseminating useful and insightful knowledge.The proceedings are a compilation of the accepted papers and represent an interesting outcome of the conference. Topics include but are not limited to the following areas: Communication Technology and Applications, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering and Application Technology, Intelligent System, Electronics and Electrical Engineering and more related topics. All the papers have been through rigorous review and process to meet the requirements of International publication standard.We would like to acknowledge all of those who supported IWAACE 2021. Using UML class diagrams for content ontology design patterns engineering

The paper presents a method for Ontology Design Patterns (ODP) engineering based on the transformation of conceptual models serialized in the XML-like formats. In this paper, we use UML class diagrams as the source of conceptual models. The method includes the following activities: design and serialization of a source conceptual domain model; analysis and transformation of an XML structure of a source conceptual model to an ontological schema model; transformation of an ontological schema model to a content ODP code in the OWL 2 DL format; verification and modification of obtained content ODPs by domain experts. All transformations are implemented with the use of original domain-specific language, namely, Transformation Model Representation Language (TMRL). The proposed method is used for ODPs engineering in tasks of industrial safety inspection of technical systems. Obtained ODPs can be used for knowledge bases and intelligent systems engineering.

System anti-jamming technology in the design of intelligent single chip computer constant current source of field strength machine

With the development of the electric power industry, the technical level of automatic testing equipment for the reliability of electrical component circuit breakers in the transmission and distribution network is getting higher and higher. The stability and accuracy of the test power supply are the basis for ensuring the pass rate of the test product. Most of the electrical testing and testing equipment has defects such as inaccurate power supply current regulation, low power, and low level of intelligence, which are difficult to meet the testing requirements. Based on the theory of a closed-loop control system, this paper adopts embedded system design technology to realize a high-current, high-power, high-stability digital constant current source system for line detection. This paper studies the rule-based intelligent anti-jamming decision engine design and system anti-jamming performance analysis of NC-OFDM system. We give the design of an intelligent anti-jamming decision engine based on rule-based decision-making, and focus on two intelligent anti-jamming decision-making algorithms: Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) algorithm based on signal-to-noise ratio difference and packet error rate and Adaptive Sub-Band Selection (ASBS) algorithm. Experimental test results show that the output current range is 200 mA to 2000 mA, the system has realized a microstep adjustment of±5 mA, and the absolute error of current measurement is less than 0.3%+4 mA. The system is stable and reliable, and has high practical value in the field of high precision and low power.

Подход к созданию онтологий на основе электронных таблиц с произвольной структурой

The use of semantic technologies including ontologies is a widespread practice in modern intelligent system engineering. Spreadsheets are one of the most accessible and common ways of representing and storing information which are characterized by a wide variety and heterogeneity of layouts, styles and content while remaining a valuable source of domain knowledge. The paper proposes to automate the process of ontology engineering based on the analysis and transformation of spreadsheets with an arbitrary layout. For this purpose a new approach is presented that provides the restoration of the semantics of tabular data, conceptualization, and formalization of tabular content in the form of ontology. The main stages of the proposed approach and a description of the software are presented. The developed software was used to solve the practical problem of ontology engineering for diagnosing and assessing the technical condition of petrochemical equipment. Spreadsheets extracted from reports on industrial safety inspection of petrochemical complexes were used as the initial data. Based on the results of approbation, it was concluded that it is advisable to use the proposed approach when prototyping subject ontologies.

PATTERN BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING – APPLICATION OF SOLUTION PATTERNS IN THE DESIGN OF INTELLIGENT TECHNICAL SYSTEMS

AbstractFor the development of intelligent technical systems, Systems Engineering and Solution Patterns are the guarantee for success. In order to avoid cost-intensive iterations, the documentation and reuse of solution knowledge is addressed during the systems design. Using an interdisciplinary specification technique, a uniform structuring of Solution Patterns as well as the composition in a multidimensional knowledge space takes place. This is the basis of an associated systematics for a solution pattern-based system design of mechatronic systems, which is validated by two cooperating DeltaRobots.

Modes of Automated Driving System Scenario Testing: Experience Report and Recommendations

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">With the widespread development of automated driving systems (ADS), it is imperative that standardized testing methodologies be developed to assure safety and functionality. Scenario testing evaluates the behavior of an ADS-equipped subject vehicle (SV) in predefined driving scenarios. This paper compares four modes of performing such tests: closed-course testing with real actors, closed-course testing with surrogate actors, simulation testing, and closed-course testing with mixed reality. In a collaboration between the Waterloo Intelligent Systems Engineering (WISE) Lab and AAA, six automated driving scenario tests were executed on a closed course, in simulation, and in mixed reality. These tests involved the University of Waterloo’s automated vehicle, dubbed the “UW Moose”, as the SV, as well as pedestrians, other vehicles, and road debris. Drawing on both data and the experience gained from executing these test scenarios, the paper reports on the advantages and disadvantages of the four scenario testing modes, and compares them using eight criteria. It also identifies several possible implementations of mixed-reality scenario testing, including different strategies for data mixing. The paper closes with twelve recommendations for choosing among the four modes.</div></div>

Fuzzy Tops is Ranking of Academic Programs’ Competitiveness

Acknowledging the level of relevancy and competitiveness of academic programs is very important to education providers. This in return will benefit students enrolling in the programs. Measuring the level of relevancy and competitiveness of academic programs can be very subjective. In this paper, the application of a quantitative multi criteria decision making method known as Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is presented. The relevancy and competitiveness of eleven academic programs offered at the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam are ranked based on seven criteria using modified Fuzzy TOPSIS. The criteria used in ranking of the academic programs were gathered from a group of twelve decision makers which comprises of top management of the faculty and university understudied. Quantitative ranking process was done based on data provided by the education provider itself. The seven criteria used include percentage of Dean’s Award recipients, percentage of graduates with CGPA > 3.5, percentage of graduate employability, program popularity, percentage of students’ entrance CGPA > 3.0, optimum enrollment based on allocation of places offered and future job demand. The weights of the criteria are determined using Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique. Modified Fuzzy TOPSIS are then used to rank the academic programs by incorporating the weights of criteria found. Future job demand and percentage of graduate employability are found to be the top two most important criteria used in the ranking process. Bachelor of Science (Hons) Statistics, Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) Intelligent System Engineering and Bachelor of Science (Hons) Actuarial Science are found to be the top three most competitive programs offered by the institution. Consistency ratio test done indicated that the responses of decision makers are highly consistent thus reliable as reflected in the consistency ratio being < 0.1.

QOE Forecast Under the WSN Internet of Things

The Internet of things, including Internet technology, including wired and wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate on the QOE because QOE is important in the network and packet loss rate is the key point in many papers. In order to study the QOE forecast under the Internet of things, building a NS2+MyEvalvid simulation platform, by the method of modifying QoS parameters to simulate different degrees of packet loss, focus on the QOE forecast under the Internet of things. Experimental results show that, QOE forecast under the Internet of things have many methods and is very important. SVM+PCA is an important method in the field of Internet of things, the Internet of things, including Internet technology, WSN networks, RFID can be part of the WSN network. High thinking turn thinking and intelligence to do system and intelligent housing system. The application of intelligent transportation and intelligent building and intelligent engineering system and Intelligent farmand JSP sponge in the Internet of things is the future direction of development.

Energy Consumption Analysis on a Typical Office Building: Case Study of the Tiejian Tower, Tianjin

Building sector accounted for more than 30% of global energy consumption and the importance of energy-efficient buildings has been frequently highlighted. Tiejian Tower of Tianjin is a well-known intelligent and energy-efficient building. Based on its construction engineering BOQ (Bill of quantities), this paper employed the input-output analysis to study its construction and operating energy consumption in detail. The construction project was divided into six sub-projects, which were structure and decoration engineering (SD), electrical engineering (EE), water supply and drainage engineering (WD), fire protection engineering (FP), heating, ventilation and air conditioning system engineering (HVAC) and intelligent system engineering (IS). Combined with the operating energy consumption data, the performance of Tiejian was estimated from a life cycle perspective. The results show that the embodied energy consumption of construction engineering is quantified as 1.14E+15J. The structure and decoration engineering (SD) contributes almost 80% of the construction energy consumption while the energy-efficient equipment and materials contribute a relatively small proportion. The energy consumption of operation stage is quantified as 4.25E+13J for a year which is much lower than conventional buildings. Though the energy inputs at the construction stage are higher than conventional buildings, the total energy consumption is much lower than conventional ones from a long term perspective.

Manufacturing Aspect of the IBCA Structure for Active Knowledge Content Representation in Product Model

Integration of all engineering activities for lifecycle of very complex multidisciplinary products in product lifecycle management (PLM) system has lead to very complex product models in leading industries. Product model was initially defined in the ISO 10303 standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In recent advanced PLM modeling, complexity of product is handled by knowledge driven self adaptive generic model while multidisciplinary conceptual modeling applies higher abstraction methods from systems engineering (SE). Company and personal experience and expertise based active knowledge is included in product model and accumulated as intelligent property (IP) of company. Higher abstraction levels have been included by using of requirement, functional, logical, and physical (RFLP) structure of product model. In the context of physical (P) level product information, product realization (PR) model structure is defined. PR includes model information for manufacturing processes, systems, and resources.The above scenario motivated research at the Laboratory of Intelligent Engineering Systems (LIES) in high level abstraction and request driven generation of RFLP and product realization (PR) structure elements in product model. This paper introduces new research results in the initiative, behavior, context and action (IBCA) structure. Two purposes of IBCA structure are to organize active IP in product model and driving generation of RFLP and PR structure elements using always actual IP. Next issue in this paper is analysis of possibility for connection PR model entities to active knowledge driven RFLP structure element definitions. In order to achieve industrially applicable solution, research results in IBCA structure can be implemented in any host industrial PLM system where RFLP and PR structures are available within a contextual product model system. IBCA structure is required to utilize special problem solving capabilities of soft computing methods.

Signal Processing for Big Data [From the Guest Editors

The articles in this special section delineate the theoretical and algorithmic underpinnings along with the relevance of signal processing tools to the emerging field of big data and introduce readers to the challenges and opportunities for SP research on (massive-scale) data analytics. The latter entails an extended and continuously refined technological wish list, which is envisioned to encompass high-dimensional, decentralized, parallel, online, and robust statistical signal processing as well as large, distributed, fault-tolerant, and intelligent systems engineering. The goal is to selectively sample a diverse gamut of big data challenges and opportunities through surveys of methodological advances, as well as more focused- and application-oriented contributions chosen on the basis of timeliness, importance, and relevance to signal processing.

RELIABLE INTEGRATION OF CONTINUOUS CONSTRAINTS INTO EXTREME LEARNING MACHINES

The application of machine learning methods in the engineering of intelligent technical systems often requires the integration of continuous constraints like positivity, monotonicity, or bounded curvature in the learned function to guarantee a reliable performance. We show that the extreme learning machine is particularly well suited for this task. Constraints involving arbitrary derivatives of the learned function are effectively implemented through quadratic optimization because the learned function is linear in its parameters, and derivatives can be derived analytically. We further provide a constructive approach to verify that discretely sampled constraints are generalized to continuous regions and show how local violations of the constraint can be rectified by iterative re-learning. We demonstrate the approach on a practical and challenging control problem from robotics, illustrating also how the proposed method enables learning from few data samples if additional prior knowledge about the problem is available.
