Energy efficiency in architecture is a critical consideration in the design and construction of buildings, aiming to reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental impact. This abstract explores various strategies and technologies that can be implemented to enhance energy efficiency in architecture. The importance of energy efficiency in architecture lies in its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy costs, and create healthier indoor environments. Achieving energy efficiency in architecture involves a combination of passive design strategies, such as orientation, shading, and natural ventilation, as well as active technologies, including high-performance insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and renewable energy systems. Passive design strategies are fundamental to energy-efficient architecture, utilizing the natural elements of sunlight, shade, and airflow to minimize the need for mechanical heating, cooling, and lighting. Proper building orientation, effective shading devices, and strategic placement of windows and openings can maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation systems. In addition to passive design strategies, active technologies play a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency in architecture. High-performance insulation materials, such as aerogel and vacuum insulation panels, can significantly reduce heat loss and gain through building envelopes, improving thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption. Energy-efficient lighting systems, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and daylight harvesting systems, can reduce electricity usage for lighting, while renewable energy systems, such as solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, can generate clean energy on-site, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Overall, energy efficiency in architecture requires a holistic approach that considers both passive design strategies and active technologies. By incorporating these strategies and technologies into building design and construction, architects and designers can create buildings that are not only environmentally sustainable but also comfortable, healthy, and cost-effective for occupants.

Design and Implementation on Industrial Automation with the help of Renewable Energy Sources

Abstract: In the quest for a sustainable future, we’ve identified that traditional street lighting consumes more electricity than necessary. To address this, we’ve conceptualized an energy-efficient street lighting system. Our prototype leverages a Light Detecting Resistor (LDR) to optimize power usage, paving the way for an eco-friendly world. Fire alarms are crucial for timely fire detection, safeguarding lives and property. Our simplified circuit design enhances reliability, forming an integral part of a comprehensive security system that relies on sensor technology for prompt fire detection. The demand for automation is surging in both industrial and domestic spheres. This paper aims to minimize manual intervention by introducing self-operating systems powered by renewable energy sources. We’re integrating solar technology and piezoelectric sensors to harness electricity. This approach not only fuels industrial automation but also contributes to the global shift from finite conventional energy to renewable sources. By employing sensors, we ensure safety and efficiency in industrial zones while generating clean energy.

Energy Performance and Optimization of Commercial Building under Composite Climate using BIM

Abstract: The use of BIM REVIT for Energy Performance and Optimisation of Buildings (EPOBs) has been shown in this research to be a sustainable and energy-efficient response to the problems posed by climate change and growing energy expenses. These buildings are made to produce as much energy as they consume, ensuring that their net energy consumption is zero. The paper explores the evolution of energy performance and optimisation of buildings and the latest emerging technologies that are enabling their development, comprising innovative sensors, lightweight insulation panels, energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, and smart building automation systems. The effectiveness of these strategies is analysed using Autodesk insights and Revit software. In order to ascertain the effectiveness of energy-efficient and renewable energy strategies, the article also compares energy use intensity (EUI) before and after implementation. The proposed building achieved a significant 44.3% reduction in energy consumption after implementing various energy performance and Optimization strategies for commercial building design, resulting in a mean EUI value of -33.1 kWh/sq. m/year. The analysis was conducted using Autodesk Insights and Revit software, utilising the Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach for building design. This paper concludes with a discussion on the future of energy performance and optimisation and how they are an important step towards achieving sustainable and efficient energy use in the building sector, resulting in cost savings and reducing carbon emissions.

Hetero atom-based metal complexes as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes

The new, more energy-efficient lighting systems and high-quality displays for new age digital devices is the demand of the current generation. In this regard, focused and deliberated research has been done on transition metal complexes as effective building blocks for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The activity of divalent metallic compounds was investigated through spotlighting Co (II), Ni (II), and Cu (II) metal ions with guanidinium naphthoate as blue phosphors in OLEDs. Using spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, the phosphors produced at the optimal temperature were studied both structurally and thermally. Additionally, the target compound's photophysical investigations in a variety of organic solvents with differing polarities were examined, and the findings were presented. Because of their quick photoluminescence response time and high emission quantum efficiency, Ni (II) complexes have drawn specific attention. Ni (II) complexes precisely exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and found to be the most promising materials for future lighting technology. We compared the efficiencies of various complexes in this study to provide an overview of the development of OLEDs. To affirm the pertinency of the synthesized compounds as phosphors, studies like photoluminescence, correlated color temperature, color purity, Duv, and the Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI) were performed and their photometric properties were also deliberated. Ni (II) shows an magnificent luminescence character and maximum coloring index for light sources and found to be an essential component for OLEDs.

Design of an Equipped Vehicle for In Situ Road Lighting Measurement

Sustainable road lighting aims to minimize energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions. Road lighting assessment helps evaluate the energy efficiency of lighting systems, including the selection of appropriate lighting fixtures, efficient lamp technologies (such as LED), and lighting control strategies. Assessments can identify areas for improvement and guide the implementation of energy-saving measures. This study introduces a new technology that utilizes a specially equipped vehicle to efficiently and quickly measure photometric quantities on long, illuminated roads. The measurement ranges for illuminance and luminance are (0.1 to 1000) lx and (0.1 to 100) cd/m2, respectively. The equipped vehicle has a positioning resolution of less than 1 cm. A sampling distance of less than 2 m while traveling at a speed of approximately 20 km/h and a sampling rate of 3 samples/s. To test the system’s applicability, the road used in this study was slightly sloped and curved. The results indicate a strong correlation between the illuminance distributions measured by the new method and those measured by traditional methods, thereby confirming the effectiveness of this innovative approach.

Improving the energy efficiency of lighting systems for a marine equipment manufacturing plant through retrofitting, daylighting, and behaviour change

As the emissions from the operation phase of ship's life cycle are reduced as a result of ongoing efforts, it is anticipated that the decarbonization of ship's manufacturing phase will gain more attention. Marine equipment manufacturing plants are highly energy-intensive and environmentally polluting segments of the shipbuilding industry, necessitating special consideration for environmental issues such as climate change. Through energy-efficient lighting, this study aims to contribute to the promotion of clean production and energy management cultures in marine equipment manufacturing plants. An energy audit was conducted on the lighting systems of a marine equipment manufacturing plant based on the holistic consideration of the following key energy-saving measures: energy-efficiency retrofitting, daylighting, and behaviour change. The daylighting application for the foundry sections of the plant offered an 80% reduction annually in the entire plant's energy use for lighting, associated costs, CO2 emissions, and external costs, along with an initial investment cost (IIC) of €35.480, a net present value (NPV) of €184.322,6, a benefit-to-cost (B/C) ratio of 3.7, and a discounted payback period (DPP) of 2.1 years. However, the proposed daylighting system was found to provide excessive and non-uniform illuminance in the workspaces during the summer days. On the other hand, LED technology satisfied the requirements for illuminance levels and uniformity. The LED application offered a 60.6% reduction in the entire plant's lighting energy use, with an IIC of around €17.052, a NPV of €153.375, a B/C of 3.5, and a DPP of 1.25 years. The plant's carbon emissions can be reduced by about 33 tons annually, while approximately €108.111 in external health costs per year could be avoided. Additionally, around a 3.2% reduction in overall energy consumption with associated benefits can be achieved through energy-efficient behaviour by the employees.

Effects of Temporal Light Modulation on Cognitive Performance,Eye Movements, and Brain Function

ABSTRACT Temporal light modulation (TLM) describes variations in light output from a light source or lighting system and can be a characteristic of their normal operation. TLM at 100 or 120 Hz can disrupt eye movements and reduce visual performance compared to 40 kHz, but little is known of the effects between those frequencies. Such evidence could provide the basis for lighting product and application standards to support the development of energy-efficient lighting systems. This repeated-measures experiment compared the effects of three stimuli (no TLM [DC], 100 Hz, and 500 Hz [both rectangular-wave, 100% modulation depth, 50% duty cycle]) on state anxiety, eye movements (blinks, saccades, fixations, and pupil size), cognitive performance (Stroop task and sentence reading speed), and visual event-related potentials (ERPs). Post-processing of EEG data included dipole source analysis and estimates of source dipole strength. TLM at 100 Hz was associated with larger pupil sizes and greater ERP dipole strength during 100 Hz exposure than no TLM, particularly in the right hemisphere. Cognitive interference was lower for 500 Hz TLM than 100 Hz. State anxiety was unaffected. The addition of TLM to the light source signal increased arousal and altered brain activity; at the highest frequency tested here this reduced cognitive interference. Arousal theory and stochastic facilitation can provide possible explanations.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Energy-Efficient Design Strategies in Achieving Net Zero Energy Building through Reduced Energy Consumption

Abstract: Net zero energy buildings (NZEBs) have emerged as a sustainable and energy-efficient solution to the challenges of climate change and rising energy costs. These buildings are designed to generate as much energy as they consume, resulting in zero net energy consumption. The paper explores the evolution of NZEBs and the latest emerging technologies that are enabling their development, including smart building automation systems, energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, vacuum insulation panels, Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, and advanced sensors. The effectiveness of these strategies is analyzed using Autodesk insights and Revit software. The paper also discusses the comparison of Energy Use Intensity (EUI) before and after implementing energy-efficient and renewable energy techniques, which is crucial in determining their effectiveness. The proposed building achieved a significant 57.3% reduction in energy consumption after implementing various NZEB design strategies, resulting in a mean EUI value of 99.8 kWh/sq. m/year. The analysis was conducted using Autodesk Insights and Revit software, utilizing the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach for building design. Design and implementation of a real-time demonstration setup for dynamic highway tunnel lighting control research studies

This study presents the design and implementation of a computer-based real-time demonstration setup for dynamic highway tunnel lighting control research studies. The energy-efficient and controllable lighting systems stand out worldwide because of energy efficiency objectives and carbon footprint reduction goals of the countries. An LED (Light Emitting Diode) armature-based highway lighting systems are frequently utilized in recent years due to lighting efficiency, energy efficiency, long life, environmentally and cost-friendly structure of the LEDs as well as zero ultraviolet emissions of them. In this study, the LED-based dynamic tunnel lighting control approach has been implemented through the proposed demonstration setup which is a typical real-time software-controlled hardware. The parts of the proposed demonstration setup have been introduced and detailed to help with some upgrade studies in the future. The demonstration setup has been tested in some case studies, then the obtained results have been discussed and introduced. In the future, the proposed system can be upgraded and utilized for advanced control studies thanks to its computer-based and simulation environment connection capability.

Efficacious tuning in energy efficient street lighting

An energy efficient street lighting system is proposed in this paper to obtain a balance between energy savings and utility in terms of illumination by the street lights. The finite coverage of every street light equipped with the sensor is divided into zones according to the distance of the nearest pedestrian or vehicle with respect to that street light. The illumination of the street light is adjusted accordingly with respect to zones. Every street is divided into sections depending on the average distance between street lights. The parameters namely the energy savings as well as the utility of the lights in a section are defined in terms of the values of length of a zone and the factor of brightness decrement per zone. The best value of this decrement factor is determined by tuning to obtain energy efficiency. Simulation results highlight that the proposed work outperforms the existing method. As an outcome, the proposed scheme obtains a superior % of energy savings over existing work without falling below minimum utility for a small inter-distance.

Public management at the service of improving energy optimization: Case of Moroccan universities

Public management can play an important role in improving the energy optimization of Moroccan universities. By adopting efficient management practices and implementing appropriate energy policies, universities can reduce their energy consumption, decrease their carbon footprint and realize financial savings., while taking into consideration the examples or the cases of the universities having shared their experiences. Among the elements that we have noticed present in the majority of university establishments is the presence of a long-term energy strategy for universities, setting clear objectives in terms of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This strategy should include specific measures such as installing energy efficient lighting systems, using renewable energy sources, improving the efficiency of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In this article we will try to emphasize the key elements of the success of public management with reference to energy optimization by taking into consideration the case of Moroccan universities.

СПЕКТРАЛЬНІ ПАРАМЕТРИ КВАЗІМОНОХРОМАТИЧНИХ СВІТЛОДІОДІВ ДЛЯ СИСТЕМ ОСВІТЛЕННЯ З РЕГУЛЬОВАНИМ СПЕКТРАЛЬНИМ СКЛАДОМ

In this paper, the influence on the parameters of the synthesized light of the full width at the half-height level of the spectra of additional quasi-monochromatic LEDs for LED clusters with adjustable correlated color temperature built on the basis of a combination of white broadband high-power LEDs and quasi-monochromatic LEDs with peak wavelengths of 474 and 600 nm is considered. It was shown that the construction of LED clusters with adjustable CCT with an increase in the full width at half the height of the spectrum of quasi-monochromatic LEDs increases the CIE Ra of the resulting radiation. At the same time, the spectrum of quasi-monochromatic LEDs with a smaller full width at half the height of the spectrum has a greater influence on the change in the CCT of the resulting light, and therefore the contribution of the luminous flux of such LEDs to the resulting radiation will be less. Given that the parameters of the light sources used to create the light environment in which a person is, depends on the secretion of the hormones melatonin and cortisol, which significantly affect the well-being and psychophysiological state of a person, it is becoming increasingly common to build lighting systems with adjustable correlated color temperature. At the same time, achieving high luminous efficiency of modern LED lighting systems often negatively affects the quality parameters of the light environment they create. Non-compliance of the spectral composition of light with human needs at a certain time of day can adversely affect the natural cycles of human biorhythms. The results of the work contribute to the development of further research in the direction of finding new ways to build modern powerful energy-efficient LED lighting systems.

THE FUTURE OF SMART CITIES

IoT, big data analytics, and machine learning advancements have made the concept of a smart city a reality. The goal of a smart city, as we all know, is to give efficient answers to its residents using modern technology and data analytics collected by sensors. The idea of a smart city was something SF for many people in the 20th century, that was anyway pictured just in the popular media. Cities are becoming smarter not just in terms of how we can automate regular operations for individual people, buildings, and traffic systems, but also in terms of how we can monitor, comprehend, analyze, and design the city in real time to increase efficiency, equity, and quality of life for its population. A smart city goes beyond utilizing digital technology to improve resource efficiency and reduce pollution. It entails improved urban transportation networks, updated water and waste disposal facilities, and more energy-efficient lighting and heating systems. It also entails a more involved and responsive local government, safer public areas, and addressing the needs of older people. In this paper we will approach the actual smart city, what is it today; how they developed in recent years, the domains where is implemented (traffic management, healthcare, and public safety for example) and the future of smart cities in the whole world.

Energy Efficient Outdoor Lighting System Design: Case Study of IT Campus

Outdoor lighting solutions are a key to safe urbanization. It is important that assessment of lighting is done at the design stage keeping in mind the crucial parameters like environment friendly design, light pollution, and energy efficiency. These crucial parameters are met by meticulously using lighting standards at each and every stage of lighting design. This process further naturally inclines in realizing sustainable lighting solutions for the future generations. In this paper, a case study of an Information Technology (IT) campus which requires suitable outdoor lighting system is considered. Outdoor lighting is very essential from the security perspective and also for the people and vehicle movement during night time. Hence it is necessary to design and implement an effective lighting scheme. To achieve this it is necessary to perform extensive lighting calculations and simulations in DIALUX software platform.

Application of green building concepts and technologies for sustainable building development in Sub-Saharan Africa: the case of Ghana

PurposeGreen building (GB) is globally acclaimed as the most formidable solution to the adverse effects that buildings and construction activities have on the climate and environment. Nonetheless, current evidence suggests that the adoption of GB in developing countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is at a snail’s pace and characterized by the absence of GB codes and frameworks. This paper aims to determine the current level of adoption and implementation of GB concepts and technologies in the Ghanaian construction industry (GCI).Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory method of investigation involving a quantitative approach was used to achieve the objectives of this study. A literature review was conducted, and a questionnaire survey was conducted among 292 stakeholders in the GCI. The survey data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics as well as other quantitative analysis techniques.FindingsThe analysis revealed that the five most applied green building technologies (GBTs) are technologies for optimizing site planning, building orientation and configuration, use of natural ventilation, integrative use of natural lighting with electric lighting systems, application of energy-efficient lighting systems and use of permeable paving: low-traffic areas. Notably, the majority of the GBTs belong to the energy-efficiency technologies category.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings indicate that GBTs are gaining momentum in Ghana and that there is a need for ongoing research to develop new and more environmentally friendly building technologies to aid in the preservation of our society and natural resources to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) 12 and 13.Originality/valueIn effect, this study will enhance the awareness of GB development and contribute to the GB body of knowledge, particularly in the context of developing countries. It would also be useful to the GCI’s contribution to achieving the UN SDGs.

СОНЯЧНІ БАТАРЕЇ ЯК ЕЛЕМЕНТ ДИЗАЙНУ СУЧАСНИХ ЕНЕРГОЕФЕКТИВНИХ БУДІВЕЛЬ

The concept of increasing the energy efficiency of buildings by placing solar panels on their facades is considered. This solution is evaluated from the point of view of modern urban design, and the possibilities of increasing the energy efficiency of lighting systems of modern buildings with the use of solar panels for their power supply are determined. The implementation of a combination of power from renewable energy sources and from the stationary grid in the absence of energy storage systems (batteries) allows to create systems capable of using almost all the electricity generated by an alternative energy source. In this case, energy losses to energy transportation will be minimal. The absence of such battery systems in the designs allows to install only the design-calculated number of solar panels without the need to make a significant backup of generating capacity for its accumulation or operation in adverse weather conditions. An additional advantage of abandoning energy storage - batteries, is a significant reduction in the use of environmentally hazardous substances such as lead, lithium and acidic or alkaline electrolytes, the production of which has a negative impact on the environment, and their disposal requires additional costs. In the work, it is proposed to use cassette facade systems with built-in solar panels, which allow architects to create a modern appearance of buildings and structures. It is shown that in the absence of solar tracking systems, the reduction in generation is 23% for the case of horizontal expansion of solar panels compared to the case of the optimal angle (for Kyiv 40o) and 40% for the case of vertical installation of solar panels. The analysis indicates the possibility of creating a modern energy-efficient design of building facades, both in the design of modern buildings and in the restoration of facades of existing buildings.

Energy efficiency of lighting systems based on acousto-optic filtration

Designing systems with an acousto-optical filter requires considering its small numerical aperture and crystal size. These features lead to the low efficiency of using the luminous flux, which may be crucial in practical applications of such systems for spectral analysis. The article discusses ways to increase the energy efficiency in different types lighting systems based on acousto-optic filtration.

ICT Driven Smart Lighting Solution “iLIGHT” for Smart Cities: A Conceptual Framework

Purpose: Smart Cities offers enhanced quality and performance of urban services using various ICT and Digital Technologies. It is a fact that more and more people are migrating to Smart Cities for better career opportunities and to have an enjoyable and comfortable life. With the ever-increasing population, Smart Cities always need to do better capacity management to best utilize and optimize the usage of available resources. One of such challenges faced by Smart Cities is the generation of electricity to meet the increasing demand for lighting. The objective is to have an efficient as well as an economical lighting system that can provide sufficient lighting to its infrastructure facilities, offices, Smart Buildings, Smart Parks, and Public properties. In this paper, I have proposed ICT based Smart Lighting Solution "iLIGHT", which is capable of meeting the lighting need of Smart Cities in a more efficient and economical manner. The advantages and limitations of "iLIGHT" are also discussed in detail. The analytics-based test results revealed that "iLIGHT" can reduce power consumption by almost 30%. I have also provided the summary of reviewed existing literature on the lighting solutions used by Smart Cities and the advantages and limitations of these lighting solutions. I also analysed different usage scenarios for indoor and outdoor Smart Lighting Systems in Smart Cities and their typical power consumption. Finally, I have covered information with respect to my future plans on the "iLIGHT" Lighting Solution. Design/Methodology/Approach: A systematic literature review is carried out for relevant white papers, data presented over relevant websites, available research papers and conference papers on Smart Lighting System for Smart Cities. I also interacted with SMEs and Industry professionals working on this research area. The collected research material is then properly studied and analysed to identify new facts and requirements related to Smart Lighting System. Based on the new findings and data analysis results, a new Smart Lighting Solution "iLIGHT" is proposed for Smart City Smart Lighting System. Findings/Result: Smart Lighting System for Smart City is a complex system and used not only for providing efficient lighting across the Smart City but also used to interconnect various smart devices across Smart City and to provide seamless data interactions across the connected products. The Proposed "ILIGHT" Solution for Smart Lighting System in Smart City, is safe, reliable, and less expensive in design and deployment. It can offer good energy efficient Lighting System for Smart City and if used with proper configuration settings then it can be extremely fast and economical to operate and maintain. Originality/Value: The information presented in this paper with respect to proposed "iLIGHT" Solution is original and genuine and is an outcome of interactions with SMEs, Smart City stakeholders and study and analysis of various research papers in order to understand the advantages and limitations of various Smart Lighting Systems used in Smart Cities across the globe. The paper has provided new findings with respect to Smart Lighting Systems for Smart Cities, and they are completely based on own data analysis and proposed new iLIGHT Solution. Study of the Acoustic Properties of Lighting Systems Based on Hollow Mirrored Tubular Light Guides

This scientific work presents test results of energy efficient lighting systems based on mirrored hollow tubular light guides when sound waves of various intensities of low-frequency, mid-frequency and high-frequency ranges pass through them. Technological changes in design of natural lighting systems, which were carried out in order to increase their vibration resistance and noise absorption, are shown here. Studies have proved high reliability of lighting systems in terms of their soundproofing, especially in mid-frequency and high-frequency ranges, which can significantly reduce harmful effects of noise on human body.

Improving Design of an Energy-Efficient Lighting System Based on Mirrored Hollow Tubular Light Guides According to the Criterion of Its Soundproofing

This scientific work presents results of energy-efficient lighting systems based on mirrored hollow tubular light guides tests when sound waves of various intensities of low-frequency, mid-frequency and high-frequency ranges pass through them. In addition, technological changes in design of natural lighting systems, which were carried out in order to increase their vibration resistance and noise absorption are shown.Studies have shown high reliability of lighting systems in terms of their soundproofing, especially in mid-frequency and high-frequency ranges, which can significantly reduce harmful effects of noise on human body, leading to fatigue, depletion of brain cells, insomnia, decrease in overall working capacity and human productivity. Conclusions of this work make it possible to further optimize the future prospect of widespread use of energy-efficient lighting systems based on mirrored hollow tubular light guides in construction of residential, administrative and industrial premises.
