The Plasma Pressure Contribution from Low-energy (0.05–2 keV) Energetic Neutral Atoms in the Heliosheath

Energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from the heliosphere are a unique means to remotely image the boundary regions of our heliosphere. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has been very successful in measuring these ENAs since 2008 at energies from tens of eV to 6 keV. The main question raised by one solar cycle of IBEX-Lo observations at 0.05–2 keV is the strong and ubiquitous underestimation of several model predictions compared with actually measured ENA intensities at energies between 100 and 500 eV. This study converts the observed ENA intensities into plasma pressures for different sky directions and considers the implications for our understanding of the heliosheath and the source of the observed ENAs.

Relating Energetic Ion Spectra to Energetic Neutral Atoms

Heliospheric energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originate from energetic ions that are neutralized by charge exchange with neutral atoms in the heliosheath and very local interstellar medium (VLISM). Since neutral atoms are unaffected by electromagnetic fields, they propagate ballistically with the same speeds as parent particles. Consequently, measurements of ENA distributions allow one to remotely image the energetic ion distributions in the heliosheath and VLISM. The origin of the energetic ions that spawn ENAs is still debated, particularly at energies higher than ∼keV. In this work, we summarize five possible sources of energetic ions in the heliosheath that cover the ENA energy from a few keV to hundreds of keV. Three sources of the energetic ions are related to pickup ions (PUIs): those PUIs transmitted across the heliospheric termination shock (HTS), those reflected once or multiple times at the HTS, i.e., reflected PUIs, and those PUIs multiply reflected and further accelerated by the HTS. Two other kinds of ions that can be considered are ions transmitted from the suprathermal tail of the PUI distribution and other particles accelerated at the HTS. By way of illustration, we use these energetic particle distributions, taking account of their evolution in the heliosheath, to calculate the ENA intensities and to analyze the characteristics of ENA spectra observed at 1 au.

One Solar Cycle of Heliosphere Observations with the Interstellar Boundary Explorer: Energetic Neutral Hydrogen Atoms Observed with IBEX-Lo from 10 eV to 2 keV

The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) is a NASA satellite in Earth orbit, dedicated to observing both interstellar neutral atoms entering the heliosphere and energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from the interstellar boundaries from roughly 10 eV to 6 keV. This work presents the averaged maps, energy spectra, and temporal variability of heliospheric ENA intensities measured with the IBEX-Lo instrument at 1 au at energies between 10 eV and 2 keV, covering one entire solar cycle from 2009 through 2019. These results expand the range in time and energy for studying the globally distributed ENA flux and the IBEX Ribbon. The observed ENA intensities exceed model predictions, in particular below 500 eV. Moreover, the ENA intensities between 50–200 eV energy show an unexpected rise and fall around the year 2015 in most sky regions.

On the Energization of Pickup Ions Downstream of the Heliospheric Termination Shock by Comparing 0.52–55 keV Observed Energetic Neutral Atom Spectra to Ones Inferred from Proton Hybrid Simulations

We present an unprecedented comparison of ∼0.52–55 keV energetic neutral atom (ENA) heliosheath measurements, remotely sensed by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission and the Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) on the Cassini mission, with modeled ENAs inferred from interstellar pickup protons that have been accelerated at the termination shock, using hybrid simulations, to assess the pickup ion energetics within the heliosheath. This is the first study to use hybrid simulations that are able to accurately model the acceleration of ions to tens of keV energies, which is essential in order to model ENA fluxes in the heliosheath, covering the full energy range observed by IBEX and CASSINI/INCA. The observed ENA intensities are an average value over the time period from 2009 to the end of 2012, along the Voyager 2 (V2) trajectory. The hybrid simulations upstream of the termination shock, where V2 crossed, are constrained by observations. We report an energy-dependent discrepancy between observed and simulated ENA fluxes, with the observed ENA fluxes being persistently higher than the simulated ones. Our analysis reveals that the termination shock may not accelerate pickup ions to sufficient energies to account for the observed ENA fluxes. We, thus, suggest that the further acceleration of these pickup ions is most likely occurring within the heliosheath, via additional physical processes like turbulence or magnetic reconnection. However, the redistribution of energy inside the heliosheath remains an open question.

Heliosphere Responds to a Large Solar Wind Intensification: Decisive Observations from IBEX

Abstract Our heliosphere—the bubble in the local interstellar medium produced by the Sun’s outflowing solar wind—has finally responded to a large increase in solar wind output and pressure in the second half of 2014. NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission remotely monitors the outer heliosphere by observing energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) returning from the heliosheath, the region between the termination shock and heliopause. IBEX observed a significant enhancement in higher energy ENAs starting in late 2016. While IBEX observations over the previous decade reflected a general reduction of ENA intensities, indicative of a deflating heliosphere, new observations show that the large (∼50%), persistent increase in the solar wind dynamic pressure has modified the heliosheath, producing enhanced ENA emissions. The combination of these new observations with simulation results indicate that this pressure is re-expanding our heliosphere, with the termination shock and heliopause already driven outward in the locations closest to the Sun. The timing between the IBEX observations, a large transient pressure enhancement seen by Voyager 2, and the simulations indicates that the pressure increase propagated through the heliosheath, reflected off the heliopause, and the enhanced density of the solar wind filled the heliosheath behind it before generating significantly enhanced ENA emissions. The coming years should see significant changes in anomalous cosmic rays, galactic cosmic radiation, and the filtration of interstellar neutral atoms into the inner heliosphere.

The Downwind Hemisphere of the Heliosphere: Eight Years of IBEX-Lo Observations

Abstract We present a comprehensive study of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) of 10 eV to 2.5 keV from the downwind hemisphere of the heliosphere. These ENAs are believed to originate mostly from pickup protons and solar-wind protons in the inner heliosheath. This study includes all low-energy observations made with the Interstellar Boundary Explorer over the first eight years. Because the protons around 0.1 keV dominate the plasma pressure within the inner heliosheath in downwind direction, these ENA observations offer the unique opportunity to constrain the plasma properties and dimensions of the heliosheath where no in situ observations are available. We first derive energy spectra of ENA intensities averaged over time for 49 macropixels covering the entire downwind hemisphere. The results confirm previous studies regarding integral intensities and the roll-over around 0.1 keV energy. With the expanded data set, we now find that ENA intensities at 0.2 and 0.1 keV seem to anti-correlate with solar activity. We then derive the product of total plasma pressure and emission thickness of protons in the heliosheath to estimate lower limits on the thickness of the inner heliosheath. The temporally averaged ENA intensities support a rather spherical shape of the termination shock and a heliosheath thickness between 150 and 210 au for most regions of the downwind hemisphere. Around the nominal downwind direction of 76° ecliptic longitude, the heliosheath is at least 280 au thick. There, the neutral hydrogen density seems to be depleted compared to upwind directions by roughly a factor of 2.

Modeling Emission of Heavy Energetic Neutral Atoms from the Heliosphere

Abstract Observations of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) are a fruitful tool for remote diagnosis of the plasma in the heliosphere and its vicinity. So far, instruments detecting ENAs from the heliosphere were configured for observations of hydrogen atoms. Here, we estimate emissions of ENAs of the heavy chemical elements helium, oxygen, nitrogen, and neon. A large portion of the heliospheric ENAs is created in the inner heliosheath from neutralized interstellar pick-up ions (PUIs). We modeled this process and calculated full-sky intensities of ENAs for energies 0.2–130 keV/nuc. We found that the largest fluxes among considered species are expected for helium, smaller for oxygen and nitrogen, and smallest for neon. The obtained intensities are 50–106 times smaller than the hydrogen ENA intensities observed by IBEX. The detection of heavy ENAs will be possible if a future ENA detector is equipped with the capability to measure the masses of observed atoms. Because of different reaction cross-sections among the different species, observations of heavy ENAs can allow for a better understanding of global structure of the heliosphere as well as the transport and energization of PUIs in the heliosphere.

Tomographic reconstruction of storm time RC ion distribution from ENA images on board multiple spacecraft

AbstractA quantitative retrieval of 3‐D distribution of energetic ions as energetic neutral atoms (ENA) sources is a challenging task. In this paper the voxel computerized tomography (CT) method is initially applied to reconstruct the 3‐D distribution of energetic ions in the magnetospheric ring current (RC) region from ENA emission images on board multiple spacecraft. To weaken the influence of low‐altitude emission (LAE) on the reconstruction, the LAE‐associated ENA intensities are corrected by invoking the thick‐target approximation. To overcome the divergence in iteration due to discordant instrument biases, a differential ENA voxel CT method is developed. The method is proved reliable and advantageous by numerical simulation for the case of constant bias independent of viewing angle. Then this method is implemented with ENA data measured by the Two Wide‐angle Imaging Neutral‐atom Spectrometers mission which performs stereoscopic ENA imaging. The 3‐D spatial distributions and energy spectra of RC ion flux intensity are reconstructed for energies of 4–50 keV during the main phase of a major magnetic storm. The retrieved ion flux distributions seem to correspond to an asymmetric partial RC, located mainly around midnight favoring the postmidnight with L = 3.5–7.0 in the equatorial plane. The RC ion distributions with magnetic local time depend on energy, with major equatorial flux peak for lower energy located east of that for higher energy. In comparison with the ion energy spectra measured by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms‐D satellite flying in the RC region, the retrieved spectrum from remotely sensed ENA images are well matched with the in situ measurements.

Energetic Neutral Atom (ENA) intensity gradients in the heliotail during year 2003, using Cassini/INCA measurements

In the present study we use all-sky energy-resolved (5-55 keV) energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps obtained by the Ion and Neutral CAmera (INCA) on board Cassini during the time period DOY 265/2003 to 268/2003, to investigate the properties of the peak-to-basin ENA emissions in the direction of the heliotail. Our conclusions can be summarized as follows: (1) a relatively smooth boundary (called "transition region") between the very low (basin) and high (tail) ENA emissions from the heliosheath, with a spatial width of ~30° deg in ecl. longitude, that no theory had predicted to date, is identified in the energy range of 5-55 keV; (2) the ENA intensity gradient in this transition region is almost invariant as a function of both ecl. Latitude and energy, with an average value of ~2.4% per degree; (3) the deduced partial plasma pressure distributions in the 5-55 keV energy range are consistent with the ENA intensity distributions in the same energy range, while the ENA intensity gradient translates to a corresponding partial pressure gradient that occurs in the transition region; and (4) this partial pressure gradient is possibly not consistent with a tail magnetic field configuration that is similar to the measured magnetic fields by the Voyagers in the nose hemisphere.

IMAGING THE HELIOSPHERE USING NEUTRAL ATOMS FROM SOLAR WIND ENERGY DOWN TO 15 eV

We study the spatial and temporal distribution of hydrogen energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from the heliosheath observed with the IBEX-Lo sensor of the Interstellar Boundary EXplorer (IBEX) from solar wind energies down to the lowest available energy (15 eV). All available IBEX-Lo data from 2009 January until 2013 June were included. The sky regions imaged when the spacecraft was outside of Earth's magnetosphere and when the Earth was moving toward the direction of observation offer a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio even at very low energies. We find that the ENA ribbon—a 20° wide region of high ENA intensities—is most prominent at solar wind energies whereas it fades at lower energies. The maximum emission in the ribbon is located near the poles for 2 keV and closer to the ecliptic plane for energies below 1 keV. This shift is an evidence that the ENA ribbon originates from the solar wind. Below 0.1 keV, the ribbon can no longer be identified against the globally distributed ENA signal. The ENA measurements in the downwind direction are affected by magnetospheric contamination below 0.5 keV, but a region of very low ENA intensities can be identified from 0.1 keV to 2 keV. The energy spectra of heliospheric ENAs follow a uniform power law down to 0.1 keV. Below this energy, they seem to become flatter, which is consistent with predictions. Due to the subtraction of local background, the ENA intensities measured with IBEX agree with the upper limit derived from Lyα observations.

HELIOSPHERIC ENERGETIC NEUTRAL HYDROGEN MEASURED WITH ASPERA-3 AND ASPERA-4

We re-analyze the signal of non-planetary energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) in the 0.4-5.0 keV range measured with the Neutral Particle Detector (NPD) of the ASPERA-3 and ASPERA-4 experiments on board the Mars and Venus Express satellites. Due to improved knowledge of sensor characteristics and exclusion of data sets affected by instrument effects, the typical intensity of the ENA signal obtained by ASPERA-3 is an order of magnitude lower than in earlier reports. The ENA intensities measured with ASPERA-3 and ASPERA-4 now agree with each other. In the present analysis, we also correct the ENA signal for Compton-Getting and for ionization loss processes under the assumption of a heliospheric origin. We find spectral shapes and intensities consistent with those measured by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). The principal advantage of ASPERA with respect to the IBEX sensors is the two times better spectral resolution. In this study, we discuss the physical significance of the spectral shapes and their potential variation across the sky. At present, these observations are the only independent test of the heliospheric ENA signal measured with IBEX in this energy range. The ASPERA measurements also allow us to check for a temporal variation of the heliospheric signal as they were obtained between 2003 and 2007, whereas IBEX has been operational since the end of 2008.

Lunar energetic neutral atom (ENA) spectra measured by the interstellar boundary explorer (IBEX)

The solar wind continuously flows out from the Sun, filling interplanetary space and directly interacting with the surfaces of small planetary bodies and other objects throughout the solar system. A significant fraction of these ions backscatter from the surface as energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). The first observations of these ENA emissions from the Moon were recently reported from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). These observations yielded a lunar ENA albedo of ∼10% and showed that the Moon reflects ∼150 metric tons of neutral hydrogen per year. More recently, a survey of the first 2.5 years of IBEX observations of lunar ENAs was conducted for times when the Moon was in the solar wind. Here, we present the first IBEX ENA observations when the Moon is inside the terrestrial magnetosheath and compare them with observations when the Moon is in the solar wind. Our analysis shows that: (1) the ENA intensities are on average higher when the Moon is in the magnetosheath, (2) the energy spectra are similar above ~0.6* solar wind energy but below there are large differences of the order of a factor of 10, (3) the energy spectra resemble a power law with a “hump” at ∼0.6 * solar wind energy, and (4) this “hump” is broader when the Moon is in the magnetosheath. We explore potential scenarios to explain the differences, namely the effects of the topography of the lunar surface and the consequences of a very different Mach number in the solar wind versus in the magnetosheath.

Neutral atom imaging of the magnetospheric cusps

[1] The magnetospheric cusps separate closed dayside magnetospheric field lines from open field lines of the magnetotail mantle and lobes. All magnetospheric field lines that map to the magnetopause also pass through the cusp regions. Thus whenever magnetic reconnection occurs at the magnetopause, magnetosheath plasma can enter one or both of the cusp regions and charge exchange with the geocorona. The resulting energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) resulting from this charge exchange process propagate away from the cusps and are observed remotely by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). The asymmetry of the ENA intensities between the northern and southern cusps are strongly dependent upon the Earth's dipole tilt angle and are consistent with in situ cusp observations. These asymmetric fluxes in the cusp regions are suggested to be explained by the regions at the magnetopause where magnetic reconnection is expected.

Simulation and TWINS observations of the 22 July 2009 storm

TWINS is the first mission to perform stereo imaging of the Earth's ring current. The magnetic storm on 22 July 2009 was at the time the largest storm observed since TWINS began routine stereo imaging in June 2008. On 22 July 2009, the Dst dropped to nearly −80 nT at 0700 and 1000 UT. During the main phase, and at the peak of the storm, TWINS 1 and 2 were near apogee and moving between predawn and postdawn local time. The energetic neutral atom (ENA) imagers on the two spacecraft captured the storm intensification and the formation of the partial ring current. The peak of the high‐altitude ENA emissions was seen in the midnight‐to‐dawn local time sector. The development of this storm has been simulated using the comprehensive ring current model (CRCM) to understand and interpret the observed signatures. We perform CRCM runs with constant and time‐varying magnetic field. The model calculations are validated by comparing the simulated ENA and ion flux intensities with TWINS ENA images and in situ ion data from a THEMIS satellite. Simulation with a static magnetic field produces a strong shielding electric field that skews the ion drift trajectories toward dawn. The model's corresponding peak ENA emissions are always more eastward than those in the observed TWINS images. On the other hand, the simulation with a dynamic magnetic field gives better spatial agreement with both ENA and in situ particle data, suggesting that temporal variations of the geomagnetic field exert a significant influence upon global ring current ion dynamics.

Phase relations between energetic neutral atom intensities and kilometric radio emissions at Saturn

The intensities of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from Saturn's ring current were cross‐correlated with Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR, 100–400 kHz) to determine their phase relations. The cross correlations were obtained for three intervals in early 2007 when Cassini was at high northern latitudes and the Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) could optimally view the entire ring current. During these intervals, the hydrogen, oxygen, and SKR signals all exhibited ∼10.8 h periodicities. A consistent phase relation was not observed between the ENA and the SKR. Cross‐correlation amplitudes in these intervals varied from 0.25 to 0.79, and the phase offsets varied from ∼1 h to several hours and differed according to ENA species. Not only did the SKR and ENA signal show phase offsets, but the H and O signals also displayed offsets. That is, all periodicities at ∼10.8 h had no consistent synchronization.

A RE-INTERPRETATION OF STEREO /STE OBSERVATIONS AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

We present an alternate interpretation of recent STEREO/STE observations which were attributed to energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from the heliosheath. The inferred ENA intensities, as a function of longitude, are very similar to the instrument response, implying that the source or sources are quite narrow. Such narrow sources may be quite difficult to ascribe to the available sources of ENAs, such as the charge exchange of energetic charged particles with ambient neutrals, which tend to be much broader. We point out that the largest intensity maximum observed by STEREO/STE is centered at the same ecliptic longitude as the brightest known X-ray source, Sco X-1. If this is indeed the source of the detected flux, it naturally accounts for the small source width. We find that the observed energy spectrum and intensity are also consistent with the X-rays from Sco X-1. If this interpretation is correct, then observers must take care in analyzing ENA data based on detectors sensitive to radiation other than ENAs. The problem of energy dissipation in the solar wind termination shock remains unsolved, while current understanding of the interaction between the solar wind and interstellar wind awaits future observations.

Tailward flow of energetic neutral atoms observed at Mars

The ASPERA‐3 experiment on Mars Express provides the first measurements of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from Mars. These measurements are used to study the global structure of the interaction of the solar wind with the Martian atmosphere. In this study we describe the tailward ENA flow observed at the nightside of Mars. After characterizing energy spectra of hydrogen ENA signals, we present composite images of the ENA intensities and compare them to theoretical predictions (empirical and MHD models). We find that the tailward flow of hydrogen ENAs is mainly generated by shocked solar wind protons. Despite intensive search, no oxygen ENAs above the instrument threshold are detected. The results challenge existing plasma models and constrain the hydrogen exospheric densities and atmospheric hydrogen and oxygen loss rates at low solar activity.

Viewing perspective in energetic neutral atom intensity

Through interspacecraft comparison of energetic neutral oxygen (ENO) intensity from two different vantage points provided by IMAGE and Geotail, Lui et al. (2005) showed that viewing perspective plays a very important role in the observed ENO intensity level during a magnetic storm period. Motivated by the findings of Lui et al. (2005), we investigate how viewing perspective influences energetic neutral atom emissions from a modeling perspective. The main results of this paper are that (1) our simulation results, based upon O+ ion fluxes from the Comprehensive Ring Current Model and the subsequent ENO calculation, reproduce the total differential ENO intensity obtained from two spacecraft to a reasonable degree and (2) further analysis of our results indicates that pitch angle anisotropy in ring current ion flux, a crucial physical quantity in ring current dynamics, is one major contributor to the difference in energetic neutral atom intensity from different viewing perspectives.

Tailward flow of energetic neutral atoms observed at Venus

The Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms (ASPERA‐4) experiment on Venus Express provides the first measurements of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from Venus. The results improve our knowledge on the interaction of the solar wind with a nonmagnetized planet and they present an observational constraint to existing plasma models. We characterize the tailward flow of hydrogen ENAs observed on the nightside by providing global images of the ENA intensity. The images show a highly concentrated tailward flow of hydrogen ENAs tangential to the Venus limb around the Sun's direction. No oxygen ENAs above the instrument threshold are detected. The observed ENA intensities are reproduced with a simple ENA model within a factor of 2, indicating that the observed hydrogen ENAs originate from shocked solar wind protons that charge exchange with the neutral hydrogen exosphere.

Energetic Neutral Atoms from the Heliosheath

We present the measurement and analysis of hydrogen energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) recorded with the NPD sensor of the ASPERA-3 instrument on board Mars Express during the cruise phase and the Mars orbit phase. We conclude that the origin of these ENAs is the inner heliosheath. The ENA energy spectra are all very similar and can be fitted well by a two-component power law. The ENA intensities, integrated from 0.3 to 10 keV, vary in the range of 5 × 103 to 3 × 104 cm−2 sr−1 s−1. This report is an update of our earlier paper using the final NPD calibration data and improved sensor knowledge from two years of NPD operation. The present ENA measurements fit together well with earlier ENA data that were obtained from other spacecraft at higher energies, and which also have their likely origin in the inner heliosheath. Comparison of the measured ENA energy spectra with results from several heliospheric models shows that some of these models predict significantly lower ENA intensities at Earth orbit.
