The purpose of this study was to analyze the type of Moo (gusset) from women’s jeogori excavated in the early Joseon dynasty (15∼16C before the Imjin War). The excavation reports and literature of 20 excavated sites allowed the identification of different types of Moo. The excavated women’s jeogori consisted of 166 items, namely, jeocksam · hansam (37 items), jeogori (55 items), and jangjeogori · dang-ui (74 items). The results collected from this study revealed that there were ten types of Moo, namely, no Moo, consolidation triangle Moo, separation triangle Moo, curved line Moo, Moo at the end of the side line, ladder Moo, triangle Moo on the side of the torso · triangle Moo, ladder Moo · triangle Moo, upper curved line Mooㆍunder curved line Moo, rectangular Moo · ladder Moo · triangle Moo. Of the 166 items, the curved line Moo was the highest with 79 items. There were 6 types of jeocksam · hansam, 6 types of jeogori, and 5 types of jangjeogori · dang-ui. Moo was classified into four types (none, one pieces, two pieces, and three pieces), and Moo consisting of one piece was the most common (111 items). Also, there were more side slits on the Jeogori kinds. Jeogori was always supplemented by adding Moo, and Jangjeogori, which was long, was supplemented by slits and Moo to relieve inconvenience. We hope that these results will be used as a basis for the design of modern women’s clothing.
