Guidelines for the Application of Design Thinking Processes in School Administration of School Administrators Under the Secondary Educational Service Area Office, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit

The purpose of this research is twofold: 1) to study the application of the design thinking process in school administration under the Secondary Educational Service Area Office, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, and 2) to explore the implementation of design thinking process in school administration of school administrators under the Secondary Educational Service Area Office, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit. This is a qualitative research study conducted using a sample of 57 educational administrators and 7 qualified personnel as participants. The research tools utilized include document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews, with statistical analysis involving mean values and standard deviations. The research findings indicate that: 1) The application of the design thinking process in school administration of school administrators is at its highest level. When considering each aspect, it was found that the model prototypes had the highest average, while data synthesis had the lowest average. 2) In terms of guidelines for applying design thinking processes in school administration, it was observed that confidence, empathy in work, and awareness of problems with open-ended questioning encourage creativity. Motivating and encouraging the expression of different ideas by participating in the development of models for use in problem-solving and the collection of information of suggestions, for improvement and development were key factors.

Empathy in Social Work

ABSTRACTA dominant conceptualization of empathy in social work practice and education, provided by Karen Gerdes and Elizabeth Segal, relies heavily on the simulation theory adopted directly from the cognitive neurosciences. The aim was to critically challenge such a view by reporting on some recent empirical findings from the field in which professional social workers were interviewed about their experience of empathy in working with forced migrants. The findings support a phenomenological, critical account of simulation theory and provide evidence that empathy is constituted as a direct social perception of the other's experience. It was concluded that simulation theory is insufficient in providing an exhaustive approach for the professional use of empathy in social work practice and education.

Lost in translation: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of mental health professionals' experiences of empathy in clinical work with an interpreter

Although empathy is considered by many to be fundamental to psychotherapeutic practice, little is known about how working with an interpreter may affect empathy in clinical work. Accordingly, the present study aims to provide an exploration of mental health professionals' experiences of empathy in clinical work with an interpreter. A qualitative methodology was utilized in order to provide a rich understanding of participants' shared experiences of empathy in work with an interpreter. Data were gathered using a semi-structured interviewing approach. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was chosen as the method of analysis as this would provide a highly descriptive and in-depth account of participants' experiences. Interviews were conducted with 10 mental health professionals regularly working with linguistic interpreters. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using IPA. The analysis yielded four major themes which described the effects of translation upon empathic dialogues with service-users; changes in the quality of empathic communication with service-users; the effects of cultural similarities and dissimilarities upon empathy within client-interpreter and client-professional dyads; and opportunities for the interpreter to enrich participants' understanding of service-users' perspectives. The difficulties participants encountered in work with an interpreter highlight a need for training in cross-language empathy for interpreters and mental health professionals, and encourage the use of transcultural models of psychotherapy in work with non-English speaking service-users. Some of the difficulties associated with adopting traditional humanistic models of empathy, which tend to centralize the therapist within empathic processes, when working with interpreters are also discussed.

The role of empathy in work with women offenders

Research has validated the crucial aspect of empathy in effective clinical practice. Empathy requires the identification of the helping professional with the emotional experience of the client. However, in their work with women offenders, clinicians can encounter a number of obstacles to appropriate empathic interventions: the workers may over‐empathize with their clients; the offenders may be resistant to being helped; and there may be institutional and social dynamics that may discourage empathic helping by staff. This paper discusses the concept of empathy and the difficulties encountered by social workers and other clinicians in their efforts to provide appropriate empathic approaches to this population. Effective strategies that will allow for appropriate use of empathy by clinicians working with female offenders are offered.
