Trait emotional intelligence and its impact on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in patients with gastric cancer

Aims/Background Trait emotional intelligence is associated with anxiety and depression symptoms and quality of life in cancer patients. However, studies on the relationship of trait emotional intelligence with anxiety, depression, and quality of life in gastric cancer patients are limited. This study investigates the relationship of trait emotional intelligence with depression and quality of life in gastric cancer patients to provide a theoretical basis for clinical management. Methods A total of 270 patients with gastric cancer treated in our hospital from July 2020 to July 2023 were selected, of which 31 patients with missing questionnaire entries and missed visits were screened out, resulting in the enrolment of 239 gastric cancer patients in this study. In this survey, self-administered general information questionnaires, namely Trait Emotional Intelligence Short Form (TEIQue-SF), European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used. Results TEIQue-SF total scores were positively correlated with QLQ-C30 scores (p < ..001) and negatively correlated with HADS-A and HADS-D scores (p < ..001). TEIQue-SF total score was a superior positive predictor of the QLQ-C30 score (β = 0.412, p < ..001) and a superior negative predictor of the HADS score (β = –0.740, p < ..001). TEIQue-SF total score (β = 0.141, p = 0.006) and HADS score (β = –0.665, p < ..001) were good predictors of QLQ-C30 score. The direct effect of TEIQue-SF total score on QLQ-C30 score was 0.141, while HADS score between TEIQue-SF total score and QLQ-C30 score had a mediated effect value of 0.492. Conclusion Trait emotional intelligence not only directly affects the quality of life, but also indirectly affects the quality of life through anxiety and depression. Clinicians should pay attention to the anxiety, depression, and emotional intelligence of patients with gastric cancer to help them improve their quality of life.

Emotional Intelligence and Coping in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder struggle with emotion regulation and difficulty in accurately understanding facial expressions of others. This difficulty in regulating emotions can manifest as inappropriate anger, impulsiveness, and frequent mood swings. These behaviors may push others away and make it challenging to maintain loving and lasting relationships. Surprisingly, very little research has been carried out to explore the inter-relationships and interactions of coping and emotional intelligence in patients with borderline personality disorder. Aim: To study coping and emotional intelligence in patients with borderline personality disorder. Material and Methods: Cross sectional hospital based study, fifty patients with borderline personality disorder diagnosed as per DSM-V were selected by purposive sampling. 50 healthy matched subjects constituted the control group. Assessment was done using General Health Questionnaire, Brief COPE Questionnaire and Indian Adaptation of Emotional Intelligence Scale. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize and describe the characteristics of the data, including measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of variability (standard deviation, range). Inferential statistics were used to make inferences about the population based on the sample data, including hypothesis testing (t-tests) and correlation analysis. The results of the analysis were presented in tables to facilitate interpretation and communication of the findings. Results: Significant differences were seen in Coping scores and Emotional Intelligence scores between the patients with borderline personality disorder group and normal control group. The patients with borderline personality disorder groups scored significantly low on coping and emotional intelligence in comparison with control group. Further, relationship between coping and emotional intelligence was found to be positively correlated. Conclusion: These findings suggest an association between low coping, emotional intelligence and borderline personality disorder. Present findings have implications for planning better intervention and prevention in this vulnerable population.

Physical exercise may improve problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: A cross-sectional study

BackgroundMultiple sclerosis is a disease that can reduce the quality of life with a physical disability, neuropsychiatric disorders, and cognitive dysfunctions. Therefore, multiple sclerosis treatment should include treatments for cognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders and pharmacological treatments. This study aimed to examine the effects of exercise on neuropsychiatric disorders, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence in multiple sclerosis patients. MethodsThirty-six female relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients aged between 18 and 45 years, with an Expanded Disability Status Scale between 1 and 3, who were diagnosed with definitive multiple sclerosis according to the revised McDonald criteria were included in the study. Participants completed outcome measures before and after the 12-week exercise program. Demographic/clinical information of the participants was obtained at baseline, neurological examinations were performed, and graded exercise testing on a bicycle ergometer was performed to determine aerobic capacity. Short Form-12 Version 2, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, Problem-Solving Inventory, Emotional Intelligence Scale were evaluated before and after the exercise program of the participants. ResultsWhile a significant increase was observed in the HRpeak values ​​of the participants after the exercise (p < 0.05), the VO2max values also showed a highly significant difference compared to the pre-treatment values. (p < 0.01). While a significant difference was detected in the mental subparameter of Short Form-12 (p < 0.05), a high level of significant difference was found in the physical subparameter (p < 0.01). While no significant difference was observed in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale anxiety subparameter (p > 0.05), a significant difference was found in the depression subparameter (p < 0.01). There was a significant difference in Modified Fatigue Impact Scale physical and cognitive subparameters compared to pre-treatment (p < 0.01). A significant difference was observed in the Emotional Intelligence Scale total score after the treatment (p < 0.01). ConclusionsThe results of our study showed that exercise in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients provided significant improvements in emotional intelligence, improved neuropsychiatric parameters, and increased problem-solving skills. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, this study is the first study in the literature to investigate the effect of physical activity exercises on problem-solving skills in multiple sclerosis patients.

Emotional intelligence in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis: Impaired integration of emotions and decision-making

IntroductionEmotional intelligence (EI) is a fundamental requirement to maintaining social activity. Patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis have difficulties in emotional awareness.ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to assess EI in patients with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.MethodsPatients with psoriasis n=67, atopic dermatitis n=59 and control group n=65 were included in cross-sectional study. EI and its main components (experiential: perceiving emotions and using emotions to facilitate thought; strategic: understanding emotions and managing emotions to promote personal growth and social relations) were assessed using The Mayer–Salovey–Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test 2.0. Statistical analyses were performed using One-Way ANOVA and One-Way ANOVA (Kruskal-Wallis test). The level of statistical significance was set at p&lt;0.05.Data are presented as the Me (±SD).ResultsOur results show that there is statistically significant lower “strategic” component of EI for psoriasis Me=0.367 (±0.0455) and atopic dermatitis Me=0.369 (±0.0353) than for the control group Me= 0.381(±0.0361), (χ2 =7.15; p= 0.028). “Managing emotions to promote personal growth and social relations” is presented with statistically significant lower for psoriasis Me= 0,293 (±0.0374) and atopic dermatitis Me= 0.301 (±0.0351) than for the control group Me= 0.312 (±0.0272), (F=0.05; p=0.007). There is no statistically significant difference between other components of EI and the EI scores in three groups.ConclusionsPatients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis have emotional difficulties when it comes to making effective decisions.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Resiliencia e inteligencia emocional en pacientes diagnosticados con trastorno por consumo de sustancias.

El consumo de sustancias psicoactivas se ha relacionado con diversos factores de riesgo y protección en la búsqueda de optimizar la adherencia al tratamiento y prevenir recaídas. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre resiliencia e inteligencia emocional en pacientes diagnosticados con trastorno por consumo de sustancias. Material y Métodos: Estudio cuantitativo, no experimental, correlacional y transversal. La muestra fue de 43 pacientes, 13 mujeres (30%) y 30 varones (70%), entre 15 y 53 años. Se utilizó la Escala de Resiliencia de Wagnild y Young (α 0,821), y el Inventario Emocional de BarOn ICE (α 0,833). Resultados: Las dimensiones de resiliencia (confianza en sí mismo y perseverancia) tienen influencia significativamente positiva en los factores de inteligencia emocional, i.e., intrapersonal y estado de ánimo general. Conclusiones: En personas con diagnóstico de adicción a sustancias, la capacidad de resiliencia se relaciona positivamente con su habilidad general para afrontar demandas y presiones.

Dysfunction of Empathy and Related Processes in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:• Assess differences between adult patients with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy and related processes• Evaluate the effects of empathy or related processes as factors contributing to abnormal social functioning in BPD ABSTRACT: We reviewed 45 original research studies, published between 2000 and 2019, to assess differences between adult patients with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy and related processes (i.e., theory of mind, mentalizing, social cognition, and emotional intelligence). Thirty-six studies reported deficits of empathy or related processes in patients with BPD. Enhanced emotional empathy in BPD was also reported in eight studies, all of which revealed that patients had increased scores of personal distress on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index self-report questionnaire. Six studies did not find significant differences between patients with BPD and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy or related processes. No study reported enhanced cognitive empathy, social cognition, or emotional intelligence in patients with BPD. We postulate that deficits of empathy or related processes contribute to preempting the formation of stable interpersonal relationships, whereas enhanced emotional empathy might lead to personal (and interpersonal) distress, further contributing to abnormal social functioning in BPD.

Features and results of the diagnosis of disorders of social and emotional intelligence of patients with schizophrenia at an early stage of the disease

Aim. The aim of the paper was to study the specifics of diagnosing disorders of social and emotional intelligence of patients with schizophrenia at an early stage of the disease (mainly by projective methods) and to determine, thanks to the diagnosis, the targets of psychocorrectional effects.&#x0D; Methods. 64 people were studied (40 men and 24 women, average age 28 years). The experimental group included patients with a verified diagnosis of schizophrenia (F20) at an early stage of the disease (33 people, 21 men and 12 women) aged 16 to 37 years (average age 29 years), the control group of a similar age and gender structure mentally healthy persons (31 people, 19 men and 12 women, average age 28 years). As research methods the following tests were used: (1) Methodology G. Rorschachs Ink Spot Test (The Rorschach Inkblot Test, 1921); (2) Test Understanding the mental state of the eyes Reading the mind in the Eyes (Baron-Cohen et al., 2001) a modified version of E.E. Rumyantseva (2016); (3) Test Social Intelligence by J. Guildford, M. Sulliven (adaptation by E.S. Mikhailova, 1996); (4) Methodology Emotional Intelligence by J. Mayer, P. Salovei and D. Caruso (MSCEIT V2.0, 2014); (5) Test of emotional intelligence of Lucin (EmIn); (6) Hall emotional intelligence test. Data Processing Methods: John Exner Integrative System (Exner, 1997, 2003).&#x0D; Results. It was found that patients with schizophrenia, even at an early stage of the course of the disease, are worse at solving problems to assess the success of social functioning.&#x0D; Conclusions. The most significant and reliable differences (reliable by the U-criterion, at p 0.001) are found when schizophrenic patients perform tasks related to the characteristics of perception and analysis not so much of the social stimuli themselves, as by their nuancing. The structure of violations of social functioning is also dominated by difficulties in predicting both their further actions and the interlocutor. Determined by the decrease in general social incompetence is the practically reduced possibility of using emotions and their manifestations in solving social problems.

Prediction of Perceived Stress Based on Self-concept and Emotional Intelligence in Females with HIV/AIDS

Background - Paying attention to the psychological issues of patients with HIV/AIDS, improving their quality-of-life (QoL), and promotion of mental health in such patients are of great importance. The present study aimed at predicting the perceived stress based on self-percept and emotional intelligence in patients with HIV/AIDS. Methods - The population of the present descriptive, correlation study was all females diagnosed with HIV/AIDS of which 90 subjects selected by the convenience sampling method were evaluated. The data collection tools were the Cohen perceived stress scale (PSS), the Rogers self-concept scale, and the Bar–On emotional intelligence questionnaire; the stepwise regression analysis was used to analyze data. Results - Results of the present study indicated a negative and significant relationship between the perceived stress with self-concept and emotional intelligence; also, emotional intelligence could better predict the level of perceived stress than self-concept. Positive self-concept and higher levels of emotional intelligence, followed by the use of coping strategies, may cause lower levels of perceived stress in such patients. Conclusion - It seems that the findings can indicate that the emotional intelligence can predict perceived stress better than self-concept.

Coping strategies and their relationship with emotional intelligence in patients with epilepsy referred to Isfahan Epilepsy Society in 2017

IntroductionEpilepsy is a common neurological disorder, and the patients with epilepsy are heavily influenced by the psychological and social aspects of the illness. Therefore, patients try to use coping strategies to control their stress and tension in this situation. Given the importance of the issue of adaptation and coping with stress in patients with epilepsy, as well as the different factors affecting coping strategies in these patients, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between coping strategies and emotional intelligence in patients with epilepsy. MethodsThis descriptive-analytic study conducted on 134 male and female patients with epilepsy referred to the Epilepsy Society of Isfahan, Iran. The consecutive sampling method was applied in this study. The data collection tool included a three-section questionnaire: the Demographic information, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), and the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i). ResultsThe emotion-focused coping strategy was mostly used by 53.7% of the samples. The mean and standard deviation of the total score of emotional intelligence was 285.6 ± 39.5. Moreover, Pearson correlation test showed a significant difference between emotional intelligence variables and coping strategies (p < 0.001). ConclusionAccording to the relationship between emotional intelligence and coping strategies, it is suggested to consider ways to improve the emotional intelligence of patients with epilepsy in order to use more adaptive coping strategies.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, destructive metabolic disease. One of the factors that can affect the mental and physical health of diabetic patients is spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: This descriptive - correlational study was performed on 100 patients with type 2 diabetes who referred to the Kermanshah Diabetes Research Center and selected by the convenient sampling method. In order to determine the spiritual intelligence in diabetic patients, the King’s Spiritual Intelligence was used while Petrides & Furnham Inventory of Emotional Intelligence was applied to evaluate emotional intelligence. In order to analyze the data, SPSS version 22 was used. Results: The mean age of the patients was 39.97 ± 11.8. The mean score of spiritual intelligence was 52.10 ± 18.05 and the mean score of emotional intelligence was 127.62 ± 23.88. The results showed that there was a positive significant difference between spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence and its subscales in patients with type 2 diabetes (P > 0.001). Conclusions: It can be concluded that spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence can complement each other in order to increase diabetes self - management and adaptive mechanisms in patients. The more the patient is against wrong behaviors of others and trusts in God for his/her tasks, the better the individual can manage his/her daily activities in life and provide a context for emotional intelligence development.

Emotional intelligence in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder and healthy controls

Emotional intelligence as a part of social cognition has, to our knowledge, never been investigated in patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), though the disorder is characterized by aspects of emotional dysfunctioning. PTSD often occurs with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as a common comorbidity. Studies about social cognition and emotional intelligence in patients with BPD propose aberrant social cognition, but produced inconsistent results regarding emotional intelligence. The present study aims to assess emotional intelligence in patients with PTSD without comorbid BPD, PTSD with comorbid BPD, and BPD patients without comorbid PTSD, as well as in healthy controls.71 patients with PTSD (41 patients with PTSD without comorbid BPD, 30 patients with PTSD with comorbid BPD), 56 patients with BPD without PTSD, and 63 healthy controls filled in the Test of Emotional Intelligence (TEMINT). Patients with PTSD without comorbid BPD showed impairments in emotional intelligence compared to patients with BPD without PTSD, and compared to healthy controls. These impairments were not restricted to specific emotions. Patients with BPD did not differ significantly from healthy controls. This study provides evidence for an impaired emotional intelligence in PTSD without comorbid BPD compared to BPD and healthy controls, affecting a wide range of emotions.

Emotional Intelligence in Patients with High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

The aim of the present study was to investigate the differences on emotional intelligence among patients with high blood pressure and heart disease and normal people. The random sampling method was used in this study. The total sample consisted of 120 subjects out of which 60 were patients with high blood pressure and heart disease and 60 were normal people. Patients were from the various hospitals of Bhavnagar District. Emotional Intelligence Scale developed by Schutte used to measure the emotional intelligence. The data were analyzed using t-test. The result showed that there is significant difference on emotional intelligence among patients and normal people. Normal people scored higher on emotional intelligence than the patients with high blood pressure and heart disease.

HbA1c levels as a function of emotional regulation and emotional intelligence in patients with type 2 diabetes

AimsUnderstanding the role of emotion in glycemic control may be critical for the long-term treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this study we investigated the relationship between measures of emotional regulation and emotional intelligence and HbA1c levels in adult patients with T2 diabetes. Methods100 adult patients with T2 diabetes completed assessments of emotional regulation (i.e., affect intensity/lability) and emotional intelligence and were then correlated with HbA1c levels with several relevant covariates. ResultsHbA1c levels were significantly associated with affect intensity (AI: r=.24, p=.018) and with emotional intelligence (EI: r=−.29, p=.004), but not affect lability. These results were the same even after adding income, state depression scores, insulin-dependent status, serum cholesterol, diabetes literacy and self-care as covariates (AI: β=.33, p=.001; EI: β=−.31, p=.002). Diabetes self-care, but not diabetes literacy, was also associated with HbA1c levels (β=−.29, p=.003). ConclusionsThese data suggest that aspects of emotional regulation and emotional intelligence play a role in glycemic control in adult patients with T2 diabetes and do so even in the context of several variables relevant to diabetes. If so, interventions that can reduce affect intensity and/or increase emotional intelligence may represent a new strategy in the glycemic control of adult patients with T2 diabetes.

The emotional intelligence in severe mental disorders: A comparative study in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

IntroductionSevere mental disorders have deficits in different aspects of social cognition, which seem to be more pronounced in patients with schizophrenia compared to those with bipolar disorder. Emotional intelligence, defined as the ability to process, understand and manage emotions, is one of the main components of the sociocognition. Both in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have been described changes in emotional intelligence, but only few studies compare both disorders.ObjectivesThe objective of this research is to increase knowledge about the differences between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.AimsTo compare emotional intelligence in patients with schizophrenia versus bipolar patients.MethodsSeventy-five adult patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were evaluate.The assessment protocol consisted of a questionnaire on socio-demographic and clinical-care data, and a battery of assessment scales (BPRS, PANSS, SCID-I-RV, YMRS, HDRS, CGI-S, EEAG, MSCEIT). Among the assessment tools of emotional intelligence, we select MSCEIT as the most validated.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23 version. After the descriptive analysis of the data, we compare the results of the scales.ResultsBoth disorders show a deterioration of emotional intelligence compared to the general population. There were no statistically significant differences in the comparison of emotional intelligence between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.ConclusionSchizophrenia and bipolar disorder have deficits in emotional intelligence, while it is difficult to show differences between them. Emotional intelligence in association with quality of life in patients recently diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma.

The objective of this study was two-fold. First, to examine the levels of emotional intelligence in patients recently diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma, in comparison to those of healthy individuals and patients with other physical illness. Second, to evaluate the correlation between Emotional Intelligence and quality of life. Cross sectional study in a university tertiary referral center. Consecutive patients (mean age [range], 56.4 [17-85] yr) diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma between April 2011 and October 2012 (N = 254). Sociodemographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, disease-specific quality of life (PANQOL), and Emotional Intelligence (TEIQue-SF) were assessed by questionnaire before the start of medical treatment. Levels of Emotional Intelligence in patients with vestibular schwannoma (N = 178; response rate 70.1%) were significantly lower compared with healthy individuals and patients with cancer. Emotional Intelligence was highly positively correlated to disease-specific quality of life. Balance disorders and cranial nerve dysfunction made a significant negative contribution to the quality of life. For educational level, a significant positive contribution was found as well. The substantial impact of a vestibular schwannoma-diagnosis on a psychological measure (i.e., Emotional Intelligence) in the affected patients as demonstrated in our study has important clinical and research implications when developing guidelines about counselling of these patients. This also has to be taken into account when making clinical decisions about the proposed treatment. Addressing Emotional Intelligence may be helpful in the development of a self-management program for patients with vestibular schwannoma.

Alexithymia and Emotional Intelligence in Patients with Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a broad personality construct signifying the ability to perceive and to regulate affects within oneself. Alexithymia is another personality construct denoting difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions, with an externally oriented thinking style. Although previously considered to be independent, some studies have shown that these constructs overlap. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the levels of EI and alexithymia in patients with panic disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The subjects included 171 psychiatric patients and 56 non-clinical controls. Psychiatric diagnoses were based on DSM-IV criteria. The Emotional Intelligence Scale-34 (EIS-34) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) were used to assess EI and alexithymia. All three patient groups scored statistically significantly higher than the non-clinical controls on TAS-20 total score and the TAS-20 subfactors of difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings. EIS-34 scores were lower in patient groups than in the non-clinical controls, but only the EIS-34 intrapersonal subscale was significant difference. Total TAS-20 and EIS-34 scores in the patient cohort were inversely and significantly correlated These results reaffirm an overlap between EI and alexithymia with the intrapersonal factor of EI to be more dependent on the difficulty identifying feelings dimension of alexithymia in subjects with MDD and GAD.

Training emotional intelligence improves both emotional intelligence and depressive symptoms in inpatients with borderline personality disorder and depression

Objective. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is defined as a pervasive pattern of instability in emotion, mood and interpersonal relationships, with a comorbidity between PBD and depressive disorders (DD). A key competence for successful management of interpersonal relationships is emotional intelligence (EI). Given the low EI of patients suffering from BPD, the present study aimed at investigating the effect on both emotional intelligence and depression of training emotional intelligence in patients with BPD and DD. Methods. A total of 30 inpatients with BPD and DD (53% females; mean age 24.20 years) took part in the study. Patients were randomly assigned either to the treatment or to the control group. Pre- and post-testing 4 weeks later involved experts’ rating of depressive disorder and self-reported EI. The treatment group received 12 sessions of training in components of emotional intelligence. Results. Relative to the control group, EI increased significantly in the treatment group over time. Depressive symptoms decreased significantly over time in both groups, though improvement was greater in the treatment than the control group. Conclusion. For inpatients suffering from BPD and DD, regular skill training in EI can be successfully implemented and leads to improvements both in EI and depression. Results suggest an additive effect of EI training on both EI and depressive symptoms.
