The role of emotional factors in face processing abilities in autism spectrum conditions

Facial emotion recognition is considered atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), but emotion recognition abilities vary widely in autistic people, and there are inconsistent findings on the causes of these differences. Research indicates alexithymia may result in facial emotion recognition differences in ASC. Alternatively, mood disorders have been linked to atypical facial emotional expression recognition abilities in neurotypical adults. Investigating both the effects of alexithymia and mood disorders (depression and anxiety) is necessary to establish which of these factors may cause atypical facial emotion recognition in ASC. This study aimed to examine whether alexithymia or mood disorder symptomology is a predictor of atypical facial emotion recognition in individuals with ASC. Ninety-eight non-autistic adults and 80 autistic adults were recruited. Participants completed an online facial processing task to examine emotion and identity recognition abilities, the AQ-28, the TAS-20, and the HADS to measure autism severity, alexithymia symptoms, and depression and anxiety symptoms. Regression-based analyses found that autistic traits and autistic group membership did not predict facial emotion processing abilities after accounting for demographic variables, alexithymia and mood disorders: however, neither alexithymia nor mood disorder symptoms predicted variance in face processing abilities either. Our results concur with previous meta-analyses of facial emotion processing in autism spectrum disorder which report that studies do not always report deficits in face processing in autism: our findings are also not supportive of the model that argues that alexithymia explains facial emotion processing difficulties in autism.

Emotion recognition and social functioning in individuals with autism spectrum condition and intellectual disability.

Most previous studies have examined emotion recognition in autism spectrum condition (ASC) without intellectual disability (ID). However, ASC and ID co-occur to a high degree. The main aims of the study were to examine emotion recognition in individuals with ASC and co-occurring intellectual disability (ASC-ID) as compared to individuals with ID alone, and to investigate the relationship between emotion recognition and social functioning. The sample consisted of 30 adult participants with ASC-ID and a comparison group of 29 participants with ID. Emotion recognition was assessed by the facial emotions test, while. social functioning was assessed by the social responsiveness scale-second edition (SRS-2). The accuracy of emotion recognition was significantly lower in individuals with ASC-ID compared to the control group with ID, especially when it came to identifying angry and fearful emotions. Participants with ASC-ID exhibited more pronounced difficulties in social functioning compared to those with ID, and there was a significant negative correlation between emotion recognition and social functioning. However, emotion recognition accounted for only 8% of the variability observed in social functioning. Our data indicate severe difficulties in the social-perceptual domain and in everyday social functioning in individuals with ASC-ID.

The influence of dynamism and expression intensity on face emotion recognition in individuals with autistic traits

ABSTRACT Face emotion recognition (FER) ability varies across the population, with autistic traits in the general population reported to contribute to this variation. Previous studies used photographs of posed facial expressions, while real social encounters involve dynamic expressions of varying intensity. We used static photographs and dynamic videos, showing peak and partial facial expressions to investigate the influence of dynamism and expression intensity on FER in non-clinical adults who varied in autistic traits. Those with high autistic traits had lower accuracy with both static peak and dynamic partial intensity expressions, when compared to low autistic trait participants. Furthermore, high autistic traits were linked to an accuracy advantage for dynamic compared with static stimuli in both partial and peak expression conditions, while those with low autistic traits demonstrated this dynamic advantage only for partial expressions. These findings reveal the differing importance of dynamism and expression intensity for FER across the non-clinical population and appear linked to self-reported social-communication skills. Furthermore, FER difficulties in autism might relate to the ability to integrate subtle, dynamic information, rather than static emotion categorisation alone.

Facial emotion recognition in individuals with mild cognitive impairment: An exploratory study.

Understanding facial emotions is fundamental to interact in social environments and modify behavior accordingly. Neurodegenerative processes can progressively transform affective responses and affect social competence. This exploratory study examined the neurocognitive correlates of face recognition, in individuals with two mild cognitive impairment (MCI) etiologies (prodromal to dementia - MCI, or consequent to Parkinson's disease - PD-MCI). Performance on the identification and memorization of neutral and emotional facial expressions was assessed in 31 individuals with MCI, 26 with PD-MCI, and 30 healthy controls (HC). Individuals with MCI exhibited selective impairment in recognizing faces expressing fear, along with difficulties in remembering both neutral and emotional faces. Conversely, individuals with PD-MCI showed no differences compared with the HC in either emotion recognition or memory. In MCI, no significant association emerged between the memory for facial expressions and cognitive difficulties. In PD-MCI, regression analyses showed significant associations with higher-level cognitive functions in the emotional memory task, suggesting the presence of compensatory mechanisms. In a subset of participants, voxel-based morphometry revealed that the performance on emotional tasks correlated with regional changes in gray matter volume. The performance in the matching of negative expressions was predicted by volumetric changes in brain areas engaged in face and emotional processing, in particular increased volume in thalamic nuclei and atrophy in the right parietal cortex. Future studies should leverage on neuroimaging data to determine whether differences in emotional recognition are mediated by pathology-specific atrophic patterns.

Emotion Recognition in Individuals with Down Syndrome: A Convolutional Neural Network-Based Algorithm Proposal

This research introduces an algorithm that automatically detects five primary emotions in individuals with Down syndrome: happiness, anger, sadness, surprise, and neutrality. The study was conducted in a specialized institution dedicated to caring for individuals with Down syndrome, which allowed for collecting samples in uncontrolled environments and capturing spontaneous emotions. Collecting samples through facial images strictly followed a protocol approved by certified Ethics Committees in Ecuador and Colombia. The proposed system consists of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The first network analyzes facial microexpressions by assessing the intensity of action units associated with each emotion. The second network utilizes transfer learning based on the mini-Xception architecture, using the Dataset-DS, comprising images collected from individuals with Down syndrome as the validation dataset. Finally, these two networks are combined in a CNN network to enhance accuracy. The final CNN processes the information, resulting in an accuracy of 85.30% in emotion recognition. In addition, the algorithm was optimized by tuning specific hyperparameters of the network, leading to a 91.48% accuracy in emotion recognition accuracy, specifically for people with Down syndrome.

Cognition, prior aggression, and psychopathic traits in relation to impaired multimodal emotion recognition in psychotic spectrum disorders.

Psychopathic traits have been associated with impaired emotion recognition in criminal, clinical and community samples. A recent study however, suggested that cognitive impairment reduced the relationship between psychopathy and emotion recognition. We therefore investigated if reasoning ability and psychomotor speed were impacting emotion recognition in individuals with psychotic spectrum disorders (PSD) with and without a history of aggression, as well as in healthy individuals, more than self-rated psychopathy ratings on the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM). Eighty individuals with PSD (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, other psychoses, psychotic bipolar disorder) and documented history of aggression (PSD+Agg) were compared with 54 individuals with PSD without prior aggression (PSD-Agg) and with 86 healthy individuals on the Emotion Recognition Assessment in Multiple Modalities (ERAM test). Individuals were psychiatrically stable and in remission from possible substance use disorders. Scaled scores on matrix reasoning, averages of dominant hand psychomotor speed and self-rated TriPM scores were obtained. Associations existed between low reasoning ability, low psychomotor speed, patient status and prior aggression with total accuracy on the ERAM test. PSD groups performed worse than the healthy group. Whole group correlations between total and subscale scores of TriPM to ERAM were found, but no associations with TriPM scores within each group or in general linear models when accounting for reasoning ability, psychomotor speed, understanding of emotion words and prior aggression. Self-rated psychopathy was not independently linked to emotion recognition in PSD groups when considering prior aggression, patient status, reasoning ability, psychomotor speed and emotion word understanding.

The association between mental health stigma and face emotion recognition in individuals at risk for psychosis.

Self-stigma has been associated with reduced accuracy of face emotion recognition in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). Stigma may also relate to slowing of performance during cognitive tasks for which a negative stereotype is relevant. This study aimed to investigate the association of mental illness stigma with face emotion recognition among CHR individuals. Participants were 143 CHR individuals identified using the Structured Interview for Psychosis-Risk Syndromes (SIPS). Face emotion recognition was assessed using the Penn Emotion Recognition Task (ER-40). Stigma was assessed using discrimination, stereotype awareness, and stereotype agreement subscales of the Mental Health Attitudes Interview for CHR. We tested associations of ER-40 accuracy and response times with these stigma variables, including the role of clinical and demographic factors. Racial/ethnic minoritized participants had higher attenuated positive symptoms than non-minoritized participants. Longer ER-40 response times were correlated with greater stereotype agreement (r=.17, p=.045) and discrimination (r=.22, p=.012). A regression model predicting ER-40 response times revealed an interaction of stereotype agreement with minoritized status (p=.008), with slower response times for minoritized participants as stereotype agreement increased. Greater disorganized symptoms and male gender also predicted longer response times. ER-40 accuracy was not associated with stigma. Overall, minoritized CHR individuals with greater internalized stigma took longer to identify face emotions. Future research is needed to assess whether slower response times are specific to social cues, and if internalized stigma interferes with performance in real-world social situations. Reducing stigma may be an important target for interventions that aim to improve social skills.

The relevance of social anxiety for understanding social functioning and facial emotion recognition in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis.

Individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis often experience poor social functioning and impaired facial emotion recognition (FER); however, the impact of frequently comorbid symptoms upon these processes is underexplored. In particular, social anxiety is characteristic of this population and also related to poor social functioning and FER biases, such as misinterpreting neutral faces as negative or threatening; however, little is known about how social anxiety relates to these processes in CHR individuals. The present study examined the overlap of social anxiety, social functioning, and FER accuracy and bias. Participants (CHR N=62, healthy controls N=52) completed the self-report Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), Penn Emotion Recognition-40 (ER-40) behavioural task, and interviewer-rated Global Functioning Scale-Social (GFS-S). The ER-40 was used to assess both FER accuracy (e.g., overall number of correct responses) and bias (e.g., mislabelling neutral faces as angry). Consistent with previous research, relative to controls, CHR participants had more social anxiety (d=-1.07), poorer social functioning (d=-1.62), and performed more poorly on the FER task (e.g., d=-.37). Within CHR participants, social anxiety was related to an anger detection bias (r=.28), above and beyond positive symptom severity, which in turn was related to FER accuracy (r=.26) and social functioning (r=-.28). These findings suggest that ongoing work examining social processes within CHR individuals needs to account for social anxiety and that social anxiety may be a useful preventive intervention target.

Difficulties in facial emotion recognition: taking psychopathic and alexithymic traits into account

BackgroundAlexithymic and psychopathic traits are closely associated, but distinct constructs. Both have been associated with facial emotion processing deficits reflecting empathy deficits, however the underlying mechanism contributing to these deficits is not well-understood.MethodsThis study investigated facial emotion recognition performance in a non-clinical sample (N = 110) including both male and female participants, with varying levels of psychopathic and alexithymic traits. Facial emotion recognition was assessed using a computerized task, that presented different expressions depicting five emotional states (pain, fear, sadness, anger, happiness) and neutral expressions.ResultsResults suggest that the high psychopathic traits group reported lower accuracy compared to the low psychopathic traits group, indicating a more generalized deficit in facial affect recognition, across all emotions. The alexithymic groups (high vs. low) on the other hand did not differ in their performance on the task for any of the emotions presented.ConclusionThese findings add to the current body of research regarding face processing categorization deficits in relation to psychopathic and alexithymic traits and can inform prevention and intervention efforts that aim to facilitate facial emotion recognition in individuals with these personality traits.

Oxytocin administration versus emotion training in healthy males: considerations for future research.

Identifying emotions correctly is essential for successful social interaction. There is therefore a keen interest in designing therapeutic interventions to improve emotion recognition in individuals who struggle with social interaction. The neuropeptide oxytocin has been proposed as a potential physiological intervention due to its important role in emotion recognition and other aspects of social cognition. However, there are a number of caveats to consider with the current form of intranasal oxytocin commonly used in the literature. Psychological interventions, on the other hand, do not carry the same caveats, and there is, therefore, a need to understand how intranasal oxytocin administration compares to psychological interventions designed to target the same psychological phenomena; and whether a combined intervention approach may provide additive benefits. Here we present a pilot, proof-of-concept study in healthy volunteers comparing the effect of intranasal oxytocin against a validated emotion training programme, finding that the psychological intervention, and not intranasal oxytocin, improved emotion recognition specifically for angry expressions. We discuss the theoretical implications of the research for future clinical trials. Face memory and emotion recognition are crucial components of social cognition and interaction. Schizophrenia patients are known to have deficits in these dimensions. However possible link to inherited endophenotypes is unknown. The aim of our study is to compare these dimensions in groups of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCH), ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR), unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients (SSP), and healthy controls (HC).

Reading and reacting to faces, the effect of facial mimicry in improving facial emotion recognition in individuals with antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits

Individuals with antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits are characterized by deficits in processing facial expressions, which results in poor social adaptation and dysfunctional interpersonal relationships. However, it is not clear how individuals with varying levels of these traits differ in this emotional impairment and if these deficits are due to correctly identifying or reacting appropriately to facial expressions. The aim of the study was to examine how individuals with these traits recognized and responded to affective facial expressions by using FaceReader software (which analyses footage of faces) across different experimental conditions (imitation, suppression, and control). Imitating facial expressions was introduced to examine whether it could direct participants’ attention to the facial cues and improve participants’ performance on the facial task. A total of 643 individuals from the community were pre-screened and a sample (N = 107; M age = 21.08, SD = 1.55), differentiated on levels of antisocial personality disorder (APD) symptoms and psychopathic (PSY) traits, who were selected based on extreme scores (high/low), were invited to participate in the study. Individuals with higher levels of APD symptoms and PSY traits (APD + PSY) expressed more anger than other groups, while those in the APD-only group expressed more sadness, compared to other groups. Overall, participants were compliant in following the instructions to imitate facial expressions. However, only the group with predominantly APD symptoms and the group with combined symptoms (APD + PSY) showed improvement in their accuracy ratings specifically when instructed to imitate facial expressions, compared to when no instructions were provided. The study offers a promising direction for targeting deficits in facial emotion recognition, suggesting that the deficits found in individuals with behavioral problems (with and without psychopathic traits) can be improved by asking them to imitate facial expressions.

Sleep quality and emotion recognition in individuals with and without internalizing psychopathologies

Background and objectivesSeparate lines of research indicate sleep quality may impact recognition of facial expressions in anxious or depressed individuals. This study examined facial emotion recognition ability in the context of self-perceived sleep quality and anxiety and depression symptom levels in individuals with and without internalizing psychopathologies. MethodsSeventy anxious and/or depressed patients and 24 demographically matched healthy controls completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), standard measures of anxiety and depression, and an Emotion Recognition Task comprising negative and positive facial expressions. ResultsAnalyses of variance results revealed patients reported worse sleep quality than controls. Linear mixed-effects models indicated that all participants demonstrated better emotion recognition abilities in identifying positive versus negative emotions. For reaction time, but not accuracy, regression results revealed significant individual differences, with worse sleep quality predicting slower reaction times for positive faces, specifically for happiness. LimitationsThe use of a subjective measure of sleep quality and a specific behavioral paradigm for emotion recognition may impact the generalizability of the findings. ConclusionsAssociations between task performance and emotional valence of facial expression implies that poor sleep quality, beyond internalizing symptom severity, may disrupt emotion processing.

Basic auditory processing and emotion recognition in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis

The ability to understand others' emotions from subtle cues is a critical skill for navigating the complex social world, with increasing demands placed on this capability as children enter adolescence. Individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) of developing psychosis exhibit social isolation with specific impairments in social cognition (Thompson et al., 2011) and emotion recognition (Addington et al., 2008; Amminger et al., 2011; Corcoran et al., 2015). The degree of social impairment and the severity of emotion recognition deficits are greater in individuals who later convert to psychosis than in those who do not (Cornblatt et al., 2011). Emotion recognition deficits thus represent promising targets for improving early identification and intervention strategies (Addington et al., 2008; Amminger et al., 2011; Cornblatt et al., 2011; Kee et al., 2003; Niemi et al., 2005). A significant challenge remains however, to identify a precursor of emotional recognition deficits for use as a salient diagnostic tool and therapeutic target. Impairments in basic auditory processes may underlie the auditory emotion identification deficits and social functioning deficits associated with psychotic disorders and at-risk states. The auditory properties of speech convey emotional content (Banse and Scherer, 1996; Hammerschmidt and Jurgens, 2007), and the ability to identify emotion from these vocal cues is impaired in schizophrenia (Addington et al., 2008; Amminger et al., 2011; Bach et al., 2009; Corcoran et al., 2015; Cornblatt et al., 2011; Dickey et al., 2010; Dickey et al., 2008; Kee et al., 2003; Leitman et al., 2007; Leitman et al., 2010; Niemi et al., 2005; Thompson et al., 2011), schizotypal personality disorder (Dickey et al., 2010; Dickey et al., 2008), and CHR subjects (Corcoran et al., 2015; Thompson et al., 2011). We recently reported that individuals with schizophrenia exhibit wide ranging basic auditory processing deficits, and that additional basic auditory processing abilities, including formant discrimination, sinusoidal amplitude modulation detection, and duration discrimination are associated with the ability to recognize emotion in voice (Kraus et al., 2019). In this study, we have aimed to determine whether CHR individuals exhibit similar widespread auditory processing deficits associated with impaired emotion recognition.

Emotion recognition in individuals with cocaine use disorder: the role of abstinence length and the social brain network.

Emotion recognition is impaired in drug addiction. However, research examining the effects of cocaine use on emotion recognition yield mixed evidence with contradictory results potentially reflecting varying abstinence durations. Therefore, we investigated emotion recognition and its neural correlates in individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD) parsed according to abstinence duration. Emotion recognition performance was compared between current cocaine users (CUD + , n = 28; cocaine-positive urine), short-term abstainers (CUD-ST, n = 23; abstinence < 6months), long-term abstainers (CUD-LT, n = 20; abstinence ≥ 6months), and controls (n = 45). A sample subset (n = 73) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging to quantify regional gray matter volume (GMV) using voxel-based morphometry. CUD + demonstrated greater difficulty recognizing happiness than CUD-ST and controls, and sadness and fear compared to controls (p < 0.01). For fear, CUD-ST also performed worse than controls (p < 0.01), while no differences emerged between CUD-LT and controls. Whole-brain analysis revealed lower GMV in the bilateral cerebellum in CUD + compared to CUD-LT and controls; a similar pattern was observed in the amygdala (CUD + < CUD-LT) (pFWE < 0.01). Collapsed across all participants, poorer recognition for happiness was associated with lower right cerebellar GMV (pFWE < 0.05). Emotion recognition is impaired with current cocaine use, and selective deficits (in fear) may persist with up to 6months of abstinence. Lower cerebellar GMV may underlie deficits in positive emotion recognition. Interventions targeting emotional-social-cognitive deficits, especially among active users, may enhance treatment success for individuals with CUD.

Interleukin 6 predicts increased neural response during face processing in a sample of individuals with schizophrenia and healthy participants: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study

BackgroundDeficits in facial emotion recognition are a core feature of schizophrenia and predictive of functional outcome. Higher plasma levels of the cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6) have recently been associated with poorer facial emotion recognition in individuals with schizophrenia and healthy participants, but the neural mechanisms affected remain poorly understood. MethodsForty-nine individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 158 healthy participants were imaged using functional magnetic resonance imaging during a dynamic facial emotion recognition task. Plasma IL-6 was measured from blood samples taken outside the scanner. Multiple regression was used in statistical parametric mapping software to test whether higher plasma IL-6 predicted increased neural response during task performance. ResultsHigher plasma IL-6 predicted increased bilateral medial prefrontal response during neutral face processing compared to angry face processing in the total sample (N = 207, tmax = 5.67) and increased left insula response during angry face processing compared to neutral face processing (N = 207, tmax = 4.40) (p < 0.05, family-wise error corrected across the whole brain at the cluster level). ConclusionsThese findings suggest that higher peripheral IL-6 levels predict altered neural response within brain regions involved in social cognition and emotion during facial emotion recognition. This is consistent with recent neuroimaging research on IL-6 and suggesting a possible neural mechanism by which this cytokine might affect facial emotion recognition accuracy.

Increased Accuracy of Emotion Recognition in Individuals with Autism-Like Traits after Five Days of Magnetic Stimulations.

Individuals with autism-like traits (ALT) belong to a subclinical group with similar social deficits as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Their main social deficits include atypical eye contact and difficulty in understanding facial expressions, both of which are associated with an abnormality of the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (rpSTS). It is still undetermined whether it is possible to improve the social function of ALT individuals through noninvasive neural modulation. To this end, we randomly assigned ALT individuals into the real (n = 16) and sham (n = 16) stimulation groups. All subjects received five consecutive days of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on the rpSTS. Eye tracking data and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired on the first and sixth days. The real group showed significant improvement in emotion recognition accuracy after iTBS, but the change was not significantly larger than that in the sham group. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the rpSTS and the left cerebellum significantly decreased in the real group than the sham group after iTBS. At baseline, rsFC in the left cerebellum was negatively correlated with emotion recognition accuracy. Our findings indicated that iTBS of the rpSTS could improve emotion perception of ALT individuals by modulating associated neural networks. This stimulation protocol could be a vital therapeutic strategy for the treatment of ASD.

Measuring change in facial emotion recognition in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder show difficulty recognizing facial emotions in others, which makes social interaction challenging. While there are many treatments developed to improve facial emotion recognition, there is no agreement on the best way to measure such abilities in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of this review is to examine studies that were published between January 1998 and November 2019 and have measured change in facial emotion recognition to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments. Our search yielded 65 studies, and within these studies, 36 different measures were used to evaluate facial emotion recognition in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Only six of these measures, however, were used in different studies and by different investigators. In this review, we summarize the different measures and outcomes of the studies, in order to identify promising assessment tools and inform future research.

Dysfunctional personality beliefs and emotion recognition in individuals with methamphetamine dependence

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with methamphetamine dependence have impaired emotion recognition. However, heterogeneity in results from these studies may indicate that individual factors such as personality beliefs moderate emotion recognition deficits. Thus, we aimed to examine the relationship between dimensional estimates of dysfunctional personality beliefs and facial emotion recognition in 86 Australian treatment seekers with methamphetamine dependence. Dysfunctional beliefs were measured using the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire, and emotion recognition was measured with the Ekman’s Faces Test. We applied hierarchical regression analyses to test the relationship between beliefs and emotion recognition after accounting for the effects of intelligence. Results indicated that personality beliefs reflecting antisocial and paranoid schemas together accounted for a significant increase in the variance in fear recognition (higher levels of beliefs associated with poorer fear recognition). Further, high levels of passive-aggressive personality beliefs were associated with a tendency to misclassify faces as disgust. Our findings suggest that antisocial, paranoid, and passive-aggressive dysfunctional personality beliefs may underlie inter-individual differences in emotion recognition in methamphetamine dependent individuals. Additional research is required to better understand the relationship between personality and social processing biases, and investigate the direct impact these have on the significant psychosocial impairments present in individuals with methamphetamine dependence.

Emotion Recognition and Impulsive Choice in Relation to Methamphetamine Use and Psychosis Symptoms.

Introduction: The cognitive profiles of people with methamphetamine use disorder are characterized by impulsivity and impairment in social cognition. However, previous studies have not fully accounted for the presence and impact of co-occurring mental health problems on these domains. For instance, psychotic symptoms are commonly experienced by people who use methamphetamine and may influence cognitive performance. We aimed to examine decision making and emotion recognition in individuals with methamphetamine use, compared to healthy controls, to map the nature and degree of impairments in relation to the presence of psychotic symptoms. Method: In this naturalistic study, we assessed reward-based decision-making and facial emotion recognition across three groups, methamphetamine-using individuals with (MAP, n = 29) and without psychotic symptoms (MNP, n = 70), and healthy controls (HC, n = 32). Results: In comparison to healthy controls, methamphetamine-using individuals presented with poorer performance on tasks of decision-making and emotion recognition. Emotion recognition was impaired across all methamphetamine-using individuals, with significantly poorer recognition of anger and sadness in those with psychotic symptoms. Conclusion: We found specific impairments in emotion recognition in relation to psychotic symptoms in people who use methamphetamine regularly. This builds on previous evidence on cognitive profiles in methamphetamine use disorder, highlighting the need to assess co-morbid mental health and psychotic symptoms. Our finding that methamphetamine-using individuals with psychotic symptoms present with particular difficulties recognizing anger has implications for frontline clinicians.
