The Long-term Spectral Changes of Eta Carinae: Are they Caused by a Dissipating Occulter as Indicated by cmfgen Models?

Abstract Eta Carinae (η Car) exhibits a unique set of P Cygni profiles with both broad and narrow components. Over many decades, the spectrum has changed—there has been an increase in observed continuum fluxes and a decrease in Fe ii and H i emission-line equivalent widths. The spectrum is evolving toward that of a P Cygni star such as P Cygni itself and HDE 316285. The spectral evolution has been attributed to intrinsic variations such as a decrease in the mass-loss rate of the primary star or differential evolution in a latitudinal-dependent stellar wind. However, intrinsic wind changes conflict with three observational results: the steady long-term bolometric luminosity; the repeating X-ray light curve over the binary period; and the constancy of the dust-scattered spectrum from the Homunculus. We extend previous work that showed a secular strengthening of P Cygni absorptions by adding more orbital cycles to overcome temporary instabilities and by examining more atomic transitions. cmfgen modeling of the primary wind shows that a time-decreasing mass-loss rate is not the best explanation for the observations. However, models with a small dissipating absorber in our line of sight can explain both the increase in brightness and changes in the emission and P Cygni absorption profiles. If the spectral evolution is caused by the dissipating circumstellar medium, and not by intrinsic changes in the binary, the dynamical timescale to recover from the Great Eruption is much less than a century, different from previous suggestions.

UM 462, a local green pea galaxy analogue under the MUSE magnifying glass

Context. Stellar feedback in high-redshift galaxies plays an important, if not dominant, role in the re-ionisation epoch of the Universe. Because of their extreme star formation (SF), the relatively closer green pea (GP) galaxies are postulated as favorite local laboratories, and analogues to those high-redshift galaxies. However, at their typical redshift of z ∼ 0.2, the most intimate interaction between stars and the surrounding interstellar medium cannot be disentangled. Detailed studies of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies sharing properties with GP galaxies are necessary to anchor our investigations on them. Aims. We want to study in detail UM 462, which is a BCD with emission line ratios and equivalent widths, stellar mass, and metallicity similar to those observed in GP galaxies, and thus it is ideally suited as a corner stone and reference galaxy. Methods. We use high-quality optical integral field spectroscopy data obtained with MUSE on the ESO Very Large Telescope. Results. The electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) were mapped. Median Te decreases according to the sequence [S III] → [N II] → He I. Furthermore, Te([S III]) values are ∼13 000 K, and uniform within the uncertainties over an area of ∼20″ × 8″ (∼1.4 kpc × 0.6 kpc). The total oxygen abundance by means of the direct method is 12 + log(O/H) ∼ 8.02 and homogenous all over the galaxy within the uncertainties, which is in stark contrast with the metallicities derived from several strong line methods. This result calls for a systematic study to identify the best strategy to determine reliable metallicities at any location within a galaxy. The strong line ratios used in the BPT diagrams and other ratios tracing the ionisation structure were mapped. They are compatible with plasma ionised by massive hot stars. However, there is a systematic excess in the [O I]/Hα ratio, suggesting an additional mechanism or a complex relative configuration of gas and stars. The velocity field for the ionised gas presents receding velocities in the east and approaching velocities in the west and south-west with velocity differences of Δv ∼ 40 km s−1, but it is not compatible with simple rotation. The most striking feature is a velocity stratification in the area towards the north with redder velocities in the high ionisation lines and bluer velocities in the low ionisation lines. This is the only area with velocity dispersions clearly above the MUSE instrumental width, and it is surrounded by two ∼1 kpc-long structures nicknamed ‘the horns’. We interpret the observational evidence in that area as a fragmented super-bubble fruit of the stellar feedback and it may constitute a preferred channel through which Lyman continuum photons from the youngest generation of stars can escape. The galaxy luminosity is dominated by a young (i.e. ∼6 Myr) stellar population that contributes only 10% to the stellar mass, as derived from the modelling of the stellar continuum. The most recent SF seems to propagate from the outer to the inner parts of the galaxy, and then from east to west. We identified a supernova remnant and Wolf-Rayet stars – as traced by the red bump – that support this picture. The direction of the propagation implies the presence of younger Wolf-Rayet stars at the maximum in Hα. These may be detected by deep observations of the blue bump (not covered here). Conclusions. The ensemble of results exemplifies the potential of 2D detailed spectroscopic studies of dwarf star-forming galaxies at high spatial resolution as a key reference for similar studies on primeval galaxies.

Ensemble mapping the inner structure of luminous quasars

ABSTRACT A simple prediction of the well-known unification model of active galactic nuclei is that a sample of sources should exhibit an anticorrelation between the solid angle of the dusty torus and of the ionization cone (as the sum of them shall equal 4π); however, this has never been detected. In this work, we analyse the correlation between the [O iii] 5007 narrow emission line equivalent width and LIR(λ)/Lbol for a large sample of luminous quasars. For the first time, we detect a clear intrinsic anticorrelation between them, which immediately verifies the torus/ionization-cone geometry in luminous quasars. More interestingly, the anticorrelation significantly weakens with increasing wavelength from ∼2 to 12 $\mu$m, and disappears at ∼12 $\mu$m. Simulations show that a cool dust component (in addition to the equatorial torus) with its strength positively correlating with the solid angle of the ionization cone is required to explain the observations. This shows that the polar dust seen in nearby active galaxies also exists in luminous quasars, with its contribution to total dust emission increasing with λ (from ∼2 to 12 $\mu$m) and reaching between 39 per cent and 62 per cent (model dependent) at rest frame 12 $\mu$m. Our findings provide a unique approach to map the otherwise spatially unresolvable inner structure of quasars.

Testing the Radio-selection Method of Dual Active Galactic Nuclei in the Stripe 82 Field

We test the merger-induced dual active galactic nuclei (dAGNs) paradigm using a sample of 35 radio galaxy pairs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 field. Using Keck optical spectroscopy, we confirm 21 pairs have consistent redshifts, constituting kinematic pairs; the remaining 14 pairs are line-of-sight projections. We classify the optical spectral signatures via emission line ratios, equivalent widths, and excess of radio power above star formation predicted outputs. We find six galaxies are classified as LINERs and seven are AGN/starburst composites. Most of the LINERs are retired galaxies, while the composites likely have AGN contribution. All of the kinematic pairs exhibit radio power more than 10× above the level expected from just star formation, suggestive of a radio AGN contribution. We also analyze high-resolution (0.″3) imaging at 6 GHz from the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array for 17 of the kinematic pairs. We find six pairs (two new, four previously known) host two separate radio cores, confirming their status as dAGNs. The remaining 11 pairs contain single AGNs, with most exhibiting prominent jets/lobes overlapping their companion. Our final census indicates a dAGN duty cycle slightly higher than predictions of purely stochastic fueling, although a larger sample (potentially culled from VLASS) is needed to fully address the dAGN fraction. We conclude that while dAGNs in the Stripe 82 field are rare, the merger process plays some role in their triggering and it facilitates low to moderate levels of accretion.

CEERS Key Paper. IV. A Triality in the Nature of HST-dark Galaxies

The new capabilities that JWST offers in the near- and mid-infrared (IR) are used to investigate in unprecedented detail the nature of optical/near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources, with HST-dark galaxies among them. We gather JWST data from the CEERS survey in the Extended Groth Strip, jointly with HST data, and analyze spatially resolved optical-to-mid-IR spectral energy distributions to estimate photometric redshifts in two dimensions and stellar population properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis for red galaxies detected by NIRCam. We select 138 galaxies with F150W − F356W > 1.5 mag and F356W < 27.5 mag. The nature of these sources is threefold: (1) 71% are dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2 < z < 6 with and a variety of specific SFRs (<1 to >100 Gyr−1); (2) 18% are quiescent/dormant (i.e., subject to reignition/rejuvenation) galaxies (QGs) at 3 < z < 5, with and poststarburst mass-weighted ages (0.5–1.0 Gyr); and (3) 11% are strong young starbursts with indications of high equivalent width emission lines (typically, [O iii]+Hβ) at 6 < z < 7 (XELG-z6) and . The sample is dominated by disk-like galaxies with remarkable compactness for XELG-z6 (effective radii smaller than 0.4 kpc). Large attenuations in SFGs, 2 < A(V) < 5 mag, are found within 1.5 times the effective radius, approximately 2 kpc, while QGs present A(V) ∼ 0.2 mag. Our SED-fitting technique reproduces the expected dust emission luminosities of IR-bright and submillimeter galaxies. This study implies high levels of star formation activity between z ∼ 20 and z ∼ 10, where virtually 100% of our galaxies had already formed 108 M ⊙, 60% had assembled 109 M ⊙, and 10% up to 1010 M ⊙ (in situ or ex situ).

Rarefied Broad-line Regions in Active Galactic Nuclei: Anomalous Responses in Reverberation Mapping and Implications for Weak Emission-line Quasars

Reverberation mapping (RM) is a widely used method for probing the physics of broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). There is increasing preliminary evidence that the RM behaviors of broad emission lines are influenced by BLR densities; however, the influences have not been investigated systematically from a theoretical perspective. In this paper, we adopt a locally optimally emitting cloud model and use CLOUDY to obtain the one-dimensional transfer functions of the prominent UV and optical emission lines for different BLR densities. We find that the influences of BLR densities to RM behaviors mainly have three aspects. First, rarefied BLRs (with low gas densities) may show anomalous responses in RM observations. Their emission-line light curves inversely respond to the variations in continuum light curves, which may have been observed in some UV RM campaigns. Second, the different BLR densities in AGNs may result in correlations between the time lags and equivalent widths of emission lines, and may contribute to the scatters of the radius–luminosity relationships. Third, the variations in BLR densities may explain the changes in time lags in individual objects for different years. Some weak emission-line quasars are probably extreme cases of rarefied BLRs. We predict that their RM observations may show anomalous responses.

An Extensive Study of Blazar Broad Emission Line: Changing-look Blazars and the Baldwin Effect

It is known that the blazar jet emissions are dominated by nonthermal radiation, while the accretion disk jets are normally dominated by thermal emission. In this work, our aim is to study the connection between the two types of emission by investigating the correlation between the blazar emission-line intensity property, which embodies the nature of an accretion disk, and the γ-ray flux property, which is the representative of jet emission. We compiled a sample of 656 blazars with available emission-line equivalent widths (EWs), the GeV γ-ray flux, and the spectral energy distribution (SED) information from the literature. In this work, we found 55 previous blazar candidates of uncertain types (BCUs) that are now identified as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), and found 52 “changing-look” blazars based on their EWs, 45 of which are newly confirmed. These changing-look blazars have a larger accretion ratio () than BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. In addition, we suggest that the lower synchrotron peak blazars (LSPs) could be the source of changing-look blazars because 90.7% of the changing-look blazars in this work are confirmed as LSPs. An anticorrelation between EW and continuum intensity, the so-called global “Baldwin effect” (BEff), has been confirmed. We suggest that the steeper global BEff observed for the blazar than for radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (RQ-AGNs) is caused by the inverse Compton scattering of broad-emission-line photons. This interpretation is further supported by the positive correlation between the emission-line EW and intrinsic inverse Compton luminosity.

Exploring Changes in Quasar Spectral Energy Distributions across C iv Parameter Space

We examine the UV/X-ray properties of 1378 quasars in order to link empirical correlations to theoretical models of the physical mechanisms dominating quasars as a function of mass and accretion rate. The clarity of these correlations is improved when (1) using C iv broad emission line equivalent width (EQW) and blueshift (relative to systemic) values calculated from high signal-to-noise ratio reconstructions of optical/UV spectra and (2) removing quasars expected to be absorbed based on their UV/X-ray spectral slopes. In addition to using the traditional C iv parameter space measures of C iv EQW and blueshift, we define a “C iv ∥ distance” along a best-fit polynomial curve that incorporates information from both C iv parameters. We find that the C iv ∥ distance is linearly correlated with both the optical-to-X-ray slope, α ox, and broad-line He ii EQW, which are known spectral energy distribution indicators, but does not require X-ray or high spectral resolution UV observations to compute. The C iv ∥ distance may be a better indicator of the mass-weighted accretion rate, parameterized by L/L Edd, than the C iv EQW or blueshift alone, as those relationships are known to break down at the extrema. Conversely, there is only a weak correlation with the X-ray energy index (Γ), an alternate L/L Edd indicator. We find no X-ray or optical trends in the direction perpendicular to the C iv distance that could be used to reveal differences in accretion disk, wind, or corona structure that could be widening the C iv EQW–blueshift distribution. A different parameter (such as metallicity) not traced by these data must come into play.

Host galaxy properties of quasi-periodically erupting X-ray sources

Context.Quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions (QPEs) are a recently discovered phenomenon, the nature of which remains unclear. Based on their discovery in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), explanations related to an AGN accretion disk or potentially a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE) have been put forward. Alternatives, including highly unequal mass compact object binaries, have also been proposed to explain their properties.Aims.We perform a systematic study of the five known QPE host galaxies with the aim of providing new insights as to their nature.Methods.We analysed new and archival medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the QPE hosts. We measured emission (and absorption) line fluxes, their ratios, and equivalent widths (EWs) to locate the QPE hosts on diagnostic diagrams. We also measured the velocity dispersion of the stellar absorption lines to estimate their black hole masses.Results.All QPE host galaxies show emission lines in their optical spectra. Based on their ratios and EWs, we find evidence for the presence of an AGN in all sources, including those previously reported as passive. We measure velocity dispersions between 36 and 90 km s−1, implying the presence of low mass (105−6.7 M⊙) black holes, consistent with literature findings. Finally, we find a significant over-representation (two out of the five sources, or a factor of 13−10+13) of quiescent Balmer strong (post-starburst) galaxies among QPE hosts.Conclusions.The presence of a narrow line region consistent with an AGN in all QPE host galaxies implies that a long-lived accretion flow likely plays an integral part in the QPE phenomenon. The strong over-representation of quiescent Balmer strong galaxies among QPE hosts can be naturally explained in both the TDE and interacting extreme mass ratio inspiral hypotheses.

Inside-out star formation quenching and the need for a revision of bulge-disk decomposition concepts for spiral galaxies

Our knowledge about the photometric and structural properties of bulges in late-type galaxies (LTGs) is founded upon image decomposition into a Sérsic model for the central luminosity excess of the bulge and an exponential model for the more extended underlying disk. We argue that the standard practice of adopting an exponential model for the disk all the way to its center is inadequate because it implicitly neglects the fact of star formation (SF) quenching in the centers of LTGs. Extrapolating the fit to the observable star-forming zone of the disk (outside the bulge) inwardly overestimates the true surface brightness of the disk in its SF-quenched central zone (beneath the bulge). We refer to this effect as δio. Using predictions from evolutionary synthesis models and by applying to integral field spectroscopy data REMOVEYOUNG, a tool that allows the suppression of stellar populations younger than an adjustable age cutoff we estimate the δio in the centers of massive SF-quenched LTGs to be up to ∼2.5 (0.7) B (K) mag. The primary consequence of the neglect of δio in bulge-disk decomposition studies is the oversubtraction of the disk underneath the bulge, leading to a systematic underestimation of the true luminosity of the latter. Secondary biases impact the structural characterization (e.g., Sérsic exponent η and effective radius) and color gradients of bulges, and might include the erroneous classification of LTGs with a moderately faint bulge as bulgeless disks. Framed in the picture of galaxy downsizing and inside-out SF quenching, δio is expected to differentially impact galaxies across redshift and stellar mass ℳ⋆, thus leading to systematic and complex biases in the scatter and slope of various galaxy scaling relations. We conjecture that correction for the δio effect will lead to a down-bending of the bulge versus supermassive black hole relation for galaxies below log(ℳ⋆/M⊙) ∼ 10.7. A decreasing ℳ∙/ℳ⋆ ratio with decreasing ℳ⋆ would help to consistently explain the scarcity and weakness of accretion-powered nuclear activity in low-mass spiral galaxies. Finally, it is pointed out that a well-detectable δio (&gt; 2 r mag) can emerge early on through inward migration of star-forming clumps from the disk in combination with a strong contrast of emission-line equivalent widths between the quenched protobulge and its star-forming periphery. Spatially resolved studies of δio with the James Webb Space Telescope, the Extremely Large Telescope, and Euclid could therefore offer key insights into the chronology and physical drivers of SF-quenching in the early phase of galaxy assembly.

Spatially resolved Lyman-α emission around radio bright quasars

ABSTRACT We use Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) to perform long-slit spectroscopic observations of 23 newly discovered radio-loud quasars (RLQs) at 2.7 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 3.3. The sample consists of powerful AGN brighter than 200 mJy at 1.4 GHz and is selected on the basis of mid-infrared colours i.e. unbiased to the presence of dust. We report seven confirmed and five tentative detections of diffuse Ly α emission in the sample. We present the properties of diffuse Ly α emission and discuss in detail its relationship to different quasar properties. We find strong dependence of Ly α halo detection rate on the extent of radio source, spectral luminosity of RLQ at 420 MHz (L420MHz), presence of associated C iv absorption and nuclear He ii emission line equivalent width. As seen in previous surveys, the full width at half-maximum of diffuse Ly α emission in the case of confirmed detections are much higher (i.e. &amp;gt;1000 km s−1 in all, except one). Using the samples of high-z radio-loud quasars and galaxies from literature, we confirm the correlation between the Ly α halo luminosity and its size with $L_{\rm 420\, \rm MHz}$. The same quantities are found to be correlating weakly with the projected linear size of the radio emission. Our sample is the second largest sample of RLQs being studied for the presence of diffuse Ly α emission and fills in a redshift gap between previous such studies. Integral field spectroscopy is required to fully understand the relationship between the large-scale radio emission and the overall distribution, kinematics, and overdensity of Ly α emission in the field of these RLQs.

A peculiar Type II QSO identified via broad-band detection of extreme nebular line emission

ABSTRACT We present S82-20, an unusual redshift ≈3 object identified in SDSS-Stripe 82 broad-band images. The rest-frame ultraviolet spectrum of S82-20 shows emission lines from highly ionized species, including He ii λ1640, and the C iv λλ1548, 1550 and O vi λλ1032, 1038 doublets. The high Ly α luminosity (3.5 × 1044 erg s−1), the high emission line equivalent widths (&amp;gt;200 Å for Ly α), the full width at half-maximum of the emission lines (&amp;lt;800 km s−1), and the high ionization O vi line strongly support the interpretation that S82-20 is a Type II Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs). However, photoionization models using Type II QSO do not fully explain the measured C iv/He ii line ratio, which requires either some contribution from star formation or high velocity shocks. Additionally, S82-20 is not detected at wavelengths longer than 2 μm, in tension with the expectation of isotropically infrared emission of a luminous QSO. We consider the possibility that S82-20 is a rare example of a changing-look QSO, observed in a temporarily low state, where the broad line region has faded, while the narrow line region still emits emission line. Otherwise, it may be a rare case of the short phase of the life of a massive galaxy, in which active star formation and accretion on to a supermassive black hole coexist.

The AGNIFS survey: distribution and excitation of the hot molecular and ionized gas in the inner kpc of nearby AGN hosts

ABSTRACT We use the Gemini NIFS instrument to map the H$_2\, 2.1218\, \mu$m and Brγ flux distributions in the inner 0.04–2 kpc of a sample of 36 nearby active galaxies (0.001 ≲ z ≲ 0.056) at spatial resolutions from 4 to 250 pc. We find extended emission in 34 galaxies. In ∼55 per cent of them, the emission in both lines is most extended along the galaxy major axis, while in the other 45 per cent the extent follows a distinct orientation. The emission of H2 is less concentrated than that of Brγ, presenting a radius that contains half of the flux 60 per cent greater, on average. The H2 emission is driven by thermal processes – X-ray heating and shocks – at most locations for all galaxies, where $0.4\lt \rm H_2/Br\gamma \lt 6$. For regions where H2/Brγ &amp;gt; 6 (seen in 40 per cent of the galaxies), shocks are the main H2 excitation mechanism, while in regions with H2/Brγ &amp;lt; 0.4 (25 per cent of the sample) the H2 emission is produced by fluorescence. The only difference we found between type 1 and type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) was in the nuclear emission-line equivalent widths that are smaller in type 1 than in type 2 due to a larger contribution to the continuum from the hot dusty torus in the former. The gas masses in the inner 125 pc radius are in the range 101−104 M⊙ for the hot H2 and 103−106 M⊙ for the ionized gas and would be enough to power the AGN in our sample for 105−108 yr at their current accretion rates.

Searching for Extragalactic Star Formation in the M101 Group

Abstract We present deep, narrowband imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy M101 to search for star-forming dwarf galaxies and isolated H ii regions in the group environment. Isolated star-forming regions, unassociated with spiral arms, probe star formation (SF) at the lowest masses and environmental densities. Such objects may be isolated star-forming events or ongoing evidence of tidal interactions. Using the Burrell Schmidt telescope, we target the brightest emission lines of star-forming regions, Hα, Hβ, and [O iii], to detect potential isolated regions. Great care was taken to remove potential source contaminants, such as high-redshift objects and Galactic M stars, from our source list. For each detected source, we compare the emission line fluxes and equivalent widths, along with structural and photometric properties, to samples of Local Group dwarfs and star-forming galaxies in the SINGG/11HUGS samples. We discuss our findings in the context of SF in low-density environments and evolution of the M101 Group.

Optical spectroscopy of Galactic field classical Be stars

ABSTRACT In this study, we analyse the emission lines of different species present in 118 Galactic field classical Be stars in the wavelength range of 3800–9000 Å. We re-estimated the extinction parameter (AV) for our sample stars using the newly available data from Gaia DR2 and suggest that it is important to consider AV while measuring the Balmer decrement (i.e. D34 and D54) values in classical Be stars. Subsequently, we estimated the Balmer decrement values for 105 program stars and found that ≈20 per cent of them show D34 ≥ 2.7, implying that their circumstellar disc are generally optically thick in nature. One program star, HD 60855 shows H α in absorption – indicative of disc-less phase. From our analysis, we found that in classical Be stars, H α emission equivalent width values are mostly lower than 40 Å, which agrees with that present in literature. Moreover, we noticed that a threshold value of ∼10 Å of H α emission equivalent width is necessary for Fe ii emission to become visible. We also observed that emission line equivalent widths of H α, P14, Fe ii 5169, and O i 8446 Å for our program stars tend to be more intense in earlier spectral types, peaking mostly near B1-B2. Furthermore, we explored various formation regions of Ca ii emission lines around the circumstellar disc of classical Be stars. We suggest the possibility that Ca ii triplet emission can originate either in the circumbinary disc or from the cooler outer regions of the disc, which might not be isothermal in nature.

The OTELO survey

Context. A sample of low-mass Hα emission line sources at z ∼ 0.4 was studied in the context of the mass-metallicty relation (MZR) and its possible evolution. We drew our sample from the OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object (OTELO) survey, which exploits the red tunable filter of OSIRIS at the Gran Telescopio Canarias to perform a blind narrow-band spectral scan in a selected field of the Extended Groth Strip. We were able to directly measure emission line fluxes and equivalent widths from the analysis of OTELO pseudo-spectra. Aims. This study aims to explore the MZR in the very low-mass regime. Our sample reaches stellar masses (M*) as low as 106.8 M⊙, where 63% of the sample have M* &lt; 109 M⊙. We also explore the relation of the star formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR with M* and gas-phase oxygen abundances, as well as the M*-size relation and the morphological classification. Methods. The M* were estimated using synthetic rest-frame colours. Using an χ2 minimization method, we separated the contribution of [N II]λ6583 to the Hα emission lines. Using the N2 index, we separated active galactic nuclei from star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and estimated the gas metallicity. We studied the morphology of the sampled galaxies qualitatively (visually) and quantitatively (automatically) using high-resolution data from the Hubble Space Telescope-ACS. The physical size of the galaxies was derived from the morphological analysis using GALAPAGOS2/GALFIT, where we fit a single-Sérsic 2D model to each source. Results. We find no evidence for an MZR evolution from comparing our very low-mass sample with local SFGs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Furthermore, the same is true for M*-size and M*-SFR relations, as we deduce from comparison with recent literature. Morphologically, our sample is mostly (63%) populated by late-type galaxies, with 13% of early-type sources. For the first time, we identify one possible candidate outlier in the MZR at z = 0.4. The stellar-mass, metallicity, colour, morphology, and SFR of this source suggest that it is compatible with a transitional dwarf galaxy.

The OTELO survey

Context. The evolution of galaxies through cosmic time is studied observationally by means of extragalactic surveys. The usefulness of these surveys is greatly improved by increasing the cosmological volume, in either depth or area, and by observing the same targets in different wavelength ranges. A multi-wavelength approach using different observational techniques can compensate for observational biases. Aims. The OTELO survey aims to provide the deepest narrow-band survey to date in terms of minimum detectable flux and emission line equivalent width in order to detect the faintest extragalactic emission line systems. In this way, OTELO data will complements other broad-band, narrow-band, and spectroscopic surveys. Methods. The red tunable filter of the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is used to scan a spectral window centred at 9175 Å, which is free from strong sky emission lines, with a sampling interval of 6 Å and a bandwidth of 12 Å in the most deeply explored EGS region. Careful data reduction using improved techniques for sky ring subtraction, accurate astrometry, photometric calibration, and source extraction enables us to compile the OTELO catalogue. This catalogue is complemented with ancillary data ranging from deep X-ray to far-infrared, including high resolution HST images, which allow us to segregate the different types of targets, derive precise photometric redshifts, and obtain the morphological classification of the extragalactic objects detected. Results. The OTELO multi-wavelength catalogue contains 11 237 entries and is 50% complete at AB magnitude 26.38. Of these sources, 6600 have photometric redshifts with an uncertainty δ zphot better than 0.2 (1+zphot). A total of 4336 of these sources correspond to preliminary emission line candidates, which are complemented by 81 candidate stars and 483 sources that qualify as absorption line systems. The OTELO survey results will be released to the public on the second half of 2019.

S and VV Corona Australis: Spectroscopic Variability in Two Young Binary Star Systems

We used high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from the NIRSPEC instrument on the Keck II telescope, taken over multiple epochs spanning five years, to examine two young binary T Tauri star systems, S Corona Australis and VV Corona Australis. The stars in these 1-2" separation systems have optically thick circumstellar disks and high extinctions at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Using a combination of new and archival data, we have determined the spectral types of all the stars in these two systems for the first time, examined the variable NIR veiling, measured the emission line equivalent widths, and created spectral energy distributions. They have similar spectral types (K7-M1) and are at approximately the same evolutionary stage, allowing comparison of the four stars in the two systems. We conclude that S CrA and VV CrA are young binary systems of stars bridging the Class I and Class II evolutionary stages, characterized by high accretion luminosities and variable emission lines.

Dynamical Confirmation of a Black Hole in MAXI J1820+070

Abstract We present time-resolved 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias and 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope intermediate resolution spectroscopy of the X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070 (=ASASSN-18ey) obtained during its decline to the quiescent state. Cross-correlation of the 21 individual spectra against late-type templates reveals a sinusoidal velocity modulation with a period of 0.68549 ± 0.00001 day and semi-amplitude of 417.7 ± 3.9 km s−1. We derive a mass function f(M) = 5.18 ± 0.15 M ⊙, dynamically confirming the black hole (BH) nature of the compact object. Our analysis of the stellar absorption features supports a K3-5 spectral classification for the donor star, which contributes ≈20% of the total flux at 5200–6800 Å. The photometric 0.703 ± 0.003 day periodicity observed during outburst is 2.6% longer than the orbital period supporting the presence of a superhump modulation in the outburst light curves. In line with this interpretation, we constrain the binary mass ratio to be q ≃ 0.12. In addition, we observe a sharp increase in the Hα emission line equivalent width during inferior conjunction of the donor star that we interpret as a grazing eclipse of the accretion disk and allows us to constrain the binary inclination to i ≳ 69°. On the other hand, the absence of X-ray eclipses during outburst imply i ≲ 77°. These inclination limits, together with our dynamical solution, lead to a BH mass in the range 7–8 M ⊙. We also measure a systemic velocity γ = −21.6 ± 2.3 km s−1, which, combined with the Gaia second data release proper motion and parallax, implies a large peculiar velocity ∼100 km s−1.

CRTS J035010.7 + 323230, a new eclipsing polar in the cataclysmic variable period gap

ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a new eclipsing polar, CRTS J035010.7+323230 (hereafter CRTS J0350+3232). We identified this cataclysmic variable (CV) candidate as a possible polar from its multiyear Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS) optical light curve. Photometric monitoring of 22 eclipses in 2015 and 2017 was performed with the 2.1-m Otto Struve Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We derive an unambiguous high-precision ephemeris. Strong evidence that CRTS J0350 + 3232 is a polar comes from optical spectroscopy obtained over a complete orbital cycle using the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-m telescope. High velocity Balmer and He ii λ4686Å emission-line equivalent width ratios, structures, and variations are typical of polars and are modulated at the same period, 2.37 h (142.3 min), as the eclipse to within uncertainties. The spectral energy distribution and luminosity is found to be comparable to that of AM Herculis. Pre-eclipse dips in the light curve show evidence for stream accretion. We derive the following tentative binary and stellar parameters assuming a helium composition white dwarf and a companion mass of 0.2 M⊙: inclination i = 74.68° ± 0.03°, semimajor axis a = 0.942 ± 0.024 R⊙, and masses and radii of the white dwarf and companion, respectively: M1 = 0.948 $^{+0.006}_{-0.012}$ M⊙, R1 = 0.00830 $^{+0.00012}_{-0.00006}$ R⊙, and R2 = 0.249 ± 0.002 R⊙. As a relatively bright (V ∼ 17–19 mag), eclipsing, period-gap polar, CRTS J0350 + 3232 will remain an important laboratory for the study of accretion and angular momentum evolution in polars.
