Integrating simulation software to enhance online UAS and robotics learning: A case study

Simulation software holds immense value in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning for various reasons. In both virtual and blended learning environments, it proves to be a powerful tool by providing immersive experiences and facilitating hands-on activities. These advantages extend to both synchronous and asynchronous learning settings. A notable trend in online learning and distance education involves the integration of interactive simulation platforms as effective educational tools. This paper offers an overview of the general advantages of simulation software platforms, focusing on STEM subjects, particularly uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones. Drawing insights from multiple simulation implementation projects in online UAS courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide (ERAU-WW), this paper discusses best practices and lessons learned. Additionally, key parameters for the implementation of simulation software are presented, aiming to assist educators in their decision-making processes. The recommendations section looks ahead to potential future research and explores emerging trends and developments in educational software simulation for STEM topics.

Hyper-Local Weather Predictions with the Enhanced General Urban Area Microclimate Predictions Tool

This paper presents enhancements to, and the demonstration of, the General Urban area Microclimate Predictions tool (GUMP), which is designed to provide hyper-local weather predictions by combining machine-learning (ML) models and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. For the further development and demonstration of GUMP, the Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) campus was used as a test environment. Local weather sensors provided data to train ML models, and CFD models of urban- and suburban-like areas of ERAU’s campus were created and iterated through with a wide assortment of inlet wind speed and direction combinations. ML weather sensor predictions were combined with best-fit CFD models from a database of CFD flow fields, providing flight operational areas with a fully expressed wind flow field. This field defined a risk map for uncrewed aircraft operators based on flight plans and individual flight performance metrics. The potential applications of GUMP are significant due to the immediate availability of weather predictions and its ability to easily extend to arbitrary urban and suburban locations.

Using Peer Mentorship to Foster Growth and Interest in Human Factors

Academic programs benefit from the addition of a formalized peer mentorship program to help undergraduate and graduate students achieve academic success, social and psychological wellbeing, and career development. This article describes a peer mentorship program developed in the Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) where students study human factors at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. We describe the steps taken to develop, maintain, and evaluate the program, along with lessons learned.

The effect of a safety crisis on safety culture and safety climate: The resilience of a flight training organization during COVID-19

Flight training programs incur great risks as they instruct aspiring pilots to complete flight training and licensing procedures. It is instrumental for these programs to create strong safety cultures and climates to promote the highest level of safety possible. The COVID-19 pandemic raised many safety concerns across a variety of industries, especially the aviation industry. This study investigates the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the safety culture and safety climate of the flight training organization at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). For this purpose, we collected longitudinal data for the years 2018 through 2021 including the variables of safety culture and safety climate. The results of this research suggest that various safety culture and safety climate variables were impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on these results, leadership of the flight training program was able to mitigate and adjust safety policies and procedures to improve the safety culture and climate and ensure continuous accident-free performance. Finally, the viability of these and other safety procedures for the safe management of future crises are discussed.

IVA spacesuit for commercial spaceflight - Upper body motion envelope analysis

This paper introduces a new, preliminary physical ergonomics model for spacecraft cabin and cockpit architecture and for control systems layout conceptualization. The research was executed during a year-long collaboration between the Florida Institute of Technology's Human Spaceflight Laboratory and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Spacesuit Utilization of Innovative Technology Laboratory. It focused on physical ergonomics using an adjustable intravehicular activity Terra Spacesuit manufactured by Final Frontier Design (FFD). The main goal of this laboratory research was to generate an FFD spacesuit specific reference model of reach envelope. The model provides concrete numerical data about potential spaceflight participants' or astronauts' upper body motion, which can be used to improve spacecraft interior design. The reach envelope was mapped using an IR motion tracking system in unsuited, suited unpressurized, and suited pressurized configurations. The resulting model is presented as a geometric area accessible to all test subjects participating in this research. Although this experimental model is based on training spacesuit hardware and operated under lower (1.5 psid) than usual (3.5 psid) operating pressure, it demonstrates the physical ergonomic limitations of wearing an Intra Vehicular Activity pressurized suit. This model further helps spacecraft cabin, flight deck or cockpit architects to identify the optimum internal layout of the vehicle, placement of the control and display components. Control function activation during specific phases of the spaceflight may require either unpressurized or pressurized spacesuit operations. The accessibility of the control input systems is the primary factor in their placement inside the cockpit. More importantly, the vehicle controls, system input devices, and displays should be not only within reach, but also within an executable/operational position and configuration, or work envelope.

Exploring the Impact of Early Exposure to Research on Dual Enrollment Students: A Qualitative Single-Case Study

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) provides a concurrent enrollment model to high schools across the United States.  The concurrent enrollment opportunity offers science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) college-credit coursework taught by college-credentialed instructors on the student’s high school campus. One faculty member transitioned to Embry-Riddle’s main residential campus following seven years of service with ERAU's concurrent enrollment program. During his tenure with ERAU's concurrent enrollment program, in addition to instructing a variety of concurrent enrollment courses, he maintained an active research agenda that involved concurrently enrolled students. His transition was preceded by the matriculation of a subset of these students to Embry-Riddle’s main campus. Each of these students immediately reengaged in undergraduate research with the faculty member while he continued to serve in a strong mentoring role. This presentation explores the affect this opportunity had on individual members of this tight-knit cohort as they progressed through their concurrent enrollment and undergraduate studies, participated in a long-standing mentoring relationship, and undertook their post-graduation decision-making. The research showcases project-based learning as a scaffolding technique for meaningful undergraduate research and how it may illuminate a pathway for students who do not initially see STEM as a viable option.

Her research focuses on the intersection of gender performances as they relate to Jewish and LGBTQ identity in popular culture. She also specializes in women’s reproductive health narratives and the role of communication in women’s health medical education. All of her work is grounded in activist rhetoric and the praxis of creating social change. For nine days, our group tours modern and historical sites throughout the capitol city, including a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The memorial consists of 2,711 concrete slabs, or stelae, that bare no markings such as name or date. HFES Student Chapters: A Discussion of Best Practices

The objective of this panel is to open a dialog about how to effectively run student chapters of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The panel will start by Grace Waldfogle briefly giving an overview of the discussion panel and providing her insight into the University of Central Florida’s student chapter. Katie Lucaites will discuss the benefits of applied projects and how the Clemson student chapter succeeds. Emily Brunsen will share how the North Carolina State University student chapter makes their presence known on campus. Finally, Jessyca Derby will discuss the do’s and don’ts of chapter success from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The specific theme of this discussion panel is to express student chapter successes and failures in an open discussion format. Each panelist brings a different viewpoint from varying chapter sizes around the country. Grace will foster discussion among the panelists and questions from the general audience. Quarantining High-Stakes Assessments in an Introductory Physics Class

In the Spring of 2020, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) physics faculty used the rapid response and change of teaching modality to the pandemic to holistically re-imagine the course assessments. They developed and implemented a course architecture that focused on more smaller-stakes assessments to better engage students with the learning process. Those changes will remain in the introductory physics course moving forward.

Currently the entire world is struggling against the virulent pandemic COVID-19. Unfortunately, each of us is affected, either directly or indirectly. Our conference, 2020 4th International Conference on Aeronautical Materials and Aerospace Engineering (AMAE 2020) was not an exception.In May, mass gatherings are not permitted by the government in China to protect people. It is uncertain when the COVID-19 would end, so it remains unclear for postponement date, while many scholars and researchers want to attend this long waited conference and have academic exchanges with their peers. Therefore, in order to actively respond the call of the government, and meet author’s request, the AMAE 2020, which was planned to be held in Chengdu, China from May 14 to 17, 2020, was changed to be held on May 15, 2020 online through Tencent VooV software. This approach not only guarantee participants’ safety and health but also meets their communication needs.Each keynote speech lasted 40 minutes, invited speech 30 minutes and author presentation 15 minutes. Each presentation was packed with questions and answers. There were lively discussion at the meeting, which promotes the academic exchange. The success and prosperity of the conference is reflected high level of the papers received. AMAE 2020 became an effective communication platform for all the participants over the world.AMAE 2020 was organized by Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers. This conference aims to provide a platform for researchers and engineers to share their ideas, recent developments and successful practices in Aeronautical Materials and Aerospace Engineering. More than 70 participants attended the meeting, they were from USA, Italy, Germany, Canada, UK, Malaysia, India, Poland, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, China and more. Five renowned speakers given speeches about their latest research and reports. They are: Prof. Ian McAndrew, Capitol Technology University, USA; Prof. Kretov Anatolii, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China; Prof. Graham J. F. Hunt, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA; Assoc. Prof. Bing Li, Northwestern Polytechnical University, China and Assoc. Prof. Dmytro V. Tiniakov, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. The conference also had 2 technical sessions and 2 poster sessions.The conference proceeding is a compilation of the accepted papers and represent an interesting outcome of the conference. Preventing a boondoggle: assuring a short term research abroad activity is an educative experience

Purpose At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, an annual short-term, research abroad non-credit program was created in 2012 as a core component of the undergraduate research initiative that achieves learning outcomes in a meaningful way. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach In order to describe, and analyze the short-term research abroad activity, an instrumental case study design was created. The instrumental case study was chosen as a means of allowing the facilitators/authors to communicate how they attempted to assure that the program was educative. In order to determine if the program was in fact educative and that it met its goal of being an effective research experience the authors utilized two additional research methods. The first was a document analysis of the participant’s research artifacts. Each participant was required to communicate their findings by writing a paper that was submitted for publication to an applicable research journal. Findings The study found that an experiential education as a pedagogical framework coupled with a short-term research abroad activity can lead to a substantive educative experience, where the authors described and analyzed attempts to ensure that the short-term research abroad program was educative, it also describes the educational assessment findings which describe what was found when the authors tested whether they, in fact, met this goal. Research limitations/implications During the design phase of the short-term research abroad program, the authors turned to experiential education as a principle for how they would ensure that the program was grounded in an acceptable educational theory. Experiential education is a widely accepted educational practice used in experiences such as co-ops and internships, study abroad, undergraduate research and service learning. Practical implications To frame the short-term cultural research abroad program as something from which student could learn the authors utilized the National Society of Experiential Education’s (2013) list of eight principles of good practice. In order to safeguard that an activity is educative, an assessment or an evaluation of a demonstrative artifact is essential. In assessing the final artifact against a rubric or some other non-biased or less biased criteria, an educator can ensure that the student has gained new knowledge in the form of student learning outcomes (SLOs). In addition, the educator can use the results of this assessment to modify many different aspects of the experience ranging from the timing, the modality, the pre-work, even the learning outcomes themselves. Social implications Given financial and curriculum inflexibility of some students, Universities and faculty could achieve attainment of research-based, program agnostic, SLOs by offering short-term study abroad alternatives to the traditional semester or year-long experiences. With graduates looking to enter the job market where businesses are more globalized and executive’s recognition of a need for more international experience, carefully constructed short-term study abroad programs are meaningful avenues to build those credentials. Originality/value Such offerings can be constructed as customized experiences to achieve highly integrated skills across all degree programs.

ACRL candidates for 2019: A look at who’s running

Jon E. Cawthorne is dean of Wayne State University Library System and the School of Information Studies, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to this, Cawthorne served as dean of libraries at West Virginia University (2014–17), as associate dean of public services and assessment at Florida State University (2012–14), and as associate university librarian for Public Services at Boston College (2011–12).Anne Marie Casey is the director of Hunt Library at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she has worked since 2009. Prior to this position, Casey provided 17 years of service to Central Michigan University, where she served as associate dean of libraries (2002–09), director of off-campus library services (1999–2002), and as a distance learning librarian (1991–99).

PREFACEICMEAS 2018 was held in Beijing, China during 12-14 October, 2018, which is organized by Engineering Science and Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers (HKSME), supported by Capitol Technology University. THE 21ST AIR TRANSPORT RESEARCH SOCIETY CONFERENCE

The Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) was launched as a special interest group of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTR) during the 7th Triennial WCTR Conference at Sydney in 1995. Headquartered at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, ATRS is a platform for exchanging research ideas and results and facilitating multi-national and/ or multi- disciplinary research collaborations. Professor Tae Oum is the ATRS Founder and Chair and Professor Martin Dresner is the President and CEO. ATRS has its networking committee consisting of representatives around the group including researchers, economists, consultants and professionals. Since 2001, ATRS has been producing on a yearly basis a Global Airport Benchmarking Report. The report provides over 30 performance metrics for measuring and assessing effects of the operating environment and service quality of the airport, and airport management strategies such as business diversification, outsourcing, etc. Initiated at the University of British Columbia, the annual Global Airport Performance Benchmarking project is currently hosted at the David B. O’Maley College of Business at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. A task force, led by Professor Chunyan Yu, and consisting of 16 leading researchers from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America guides the development of the annual report released every summer. More than 200 airports and 20 airport groups are covered and benchmarked among peer airports worldwide and within the three regions currently including North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific & Oceania. With the objective of providing the most comprehensive and unbiased comparison of airports performance regarding productivity and efficiency, financial performance, unit cost competitiveness, and airport charges, the report currently consists of three parts. The first part provides a summary of the research methodology and main findings. The second part, which is the main body of the report, provides comparative assessments of airport performance and characteristics such as traffic volume, number of employees, terminal-airside capacity, and airport charges. The last part of the report presents a short profile of each airport, its new development and recent awards.
