The Structures of Political, Economic, and Socio-cultural Rhetorical Narratives on Social Media

This research was conducted on the ground of the reason for the increasingly widespread use of narratives on various social media platforms. Narrative is an event whereby someone represents an event aiming to influence the understanding, emotions and values of others. This study qualitatively aims to capture the most common elements of narrative structure focusing on political, economic, and socio-cultural rhetorical narratives data originated from social media platforms. The theoretical model of narrative structure consisting of Abstract, Orientation, Complicating Actions, Resolution, Evaluation and Coda, as proposed by Labov and Waletzky was used to analyze the narrative data collected during the first four months of 2022. On the ground of social situated meanings, the findings show that the most common model of narrative structure is fully used whenever greater details of events, facts, or information are needed to be emphasized. For such reasons, all the elements of narrative structure are held to be obligatory. The findings show that some elements of narrative structure are left out and held to be optional as such elements are not considered necessary to convey the main content. In addition, the findings also show that some particular element allows it to be further developed with more embedded events, facts, opinion, or information.

Since its inception, it has been recognized by viewers and has set off a ratings boom at one point. The narrative structure in the drama is mainly a three-act narrative, incorporating innovative narrative structure elements such as fractal and restructured time settings, reverse dual itinerary hedging, and the closed ending of the classic narrative, making the whole and part of the TV narrative structure more reasonable and innovative.

The sociology of conversion narratives: a conundrum, a theory, and an opportunity

ABSTRACT Using Paul Ricoeur’s theory of narrative to consider John Lofland and Rodney Stark’s classic “Becoming a World-Saver”, I address a fundamental conundrum in the sociology of conversion. If the conversion story is told in the light of the new discourse—brought about by the conversion—how can sociologists use it to explain the conversion and the factors that led to it? I consider the extent to which the sociology of religion has conflated the necessary elements of narrative structure for the stages of conversion. Taking into consideration more recent research, the article makes a case for the careful and comparative sociological study of conversion narratives—considered as narrative accounts. I argue that doing so further opens up avenues for research, particularly if the audiences are considered for whom the stories are told and the purposes the stories serve, and ultimately constitutes a sound basis for considering the processes of conversion themselves.

Teachers as participant-narrators in authentic data stories

ABSTRACT This study describes outcomes from a place-based, teacher-scientist partnership intended to support teacher use of authentic data for science and math instruction. Teachers worked with scientists in the field to practice collection and analysis of authentic data. This case study investigated how narrative structure and contextualisation were created and used by teachers to convey meaning from the scientists to students. Participant interviews, focus groups, and researcher notes were qualitatively analysed through production and testing of propositions. The results show that teacher narratives were based heavily on the scientists’ narratives as informed by teachers’ own field experiences and authentic data. Teachers served as participant-narrators in the narratives rather than central agents, and they used the elements of narrative structure to frame knowledge that is co-constructed by the scientists, teachers, and students. This model of transfer through story is described in detail along with implications for research and practice.

Reviewing the Review: A Text Analysis of Why Experience Reviews Receive Positive Feedback

Consumer online reviews are the most influential form of word of mouth after recommendations from family and friends. What types of reviews receive more positive feedback from consumers reading them? Although prior work provides a valid description of positive feedback on reviews of material purchases, it does not encompass positive feedback on reviews of experiential purchases. We assert that these experience reviews have a narrative structure. To test this assertion, we mined 190,461 reviews of 989 experiences on TripAdvisor, adapted contemporary quantitative techniques, and conducted an automated text analysis. We find that narrative structure elements of (1) identifiable characters, (2) an imaginable plot, and (3) genres, which involve changing emotional story shapes, are associated with more positive feedback. Thus, the narrative structure of experience reviews generates their positive feedback.

Background : Most of renovations that are being conducted nowadays have been initiated generally for economic reasons and other improvements but still, regarding how those renovations would go, people try to reuse old buildings to maintain some meaningful factors from the even if it would cost them more money. In order to protect the meanings of the buildings and everything, people would still leave old designs as they are or make new designs look old on purpose. The thesis believed that the renovation was not merely a simple process of reusing neglected spaces only because of costs or physical reasons, so as a result, it focused meaningful viewpoints that the renovation would stand for to understand how the renovation is being conducted in the modern times. Afterwards, the study proposed renovation standards that would be used in the future. Methods : This study examined the process of renovation from the viewpoint of structuralism and systemized it by adopting narratology. More specifically, based on Mieke Bal’s three elements of narrative structure ? fabla, story, text ?the process of renovation was classified into five types, which were visualized in a diagram. The five classified types were analyzed by assigning renovation cases in Korea and elsewhere. As a result, it was shown that renovation was not only achieved from a physical perspective such as the form or material, but it also emphasizes the semantic aspect. Results : Renovation examples were substituted to a selected diagram, and according to the results, the examples were categorized into five groups. Regarding those factors as a structure, history, functions and symbols and lastly, direction and experience, they would be divided into fabula, story and text but still, since they were all connected to each other, during the substitution, they were categorized into various forms. When people try to find old spaces in their past, they mostly want to have this experiences in the past again with them. That is why they did the renovation while not only did they protect the as much as possible but also fulfilled the contemporary designs at the same time. If they had not preserved the past, they have reproduced any symbolic factors from the so that other people could experience the once again in their lifetime. Conclusion : This paper will focus on the cognitive perspective of renovation to use it as a reference point for renovation in the future. In addition, it is meaningful as it attempts to suggest diversity of design by combining narratology with design.

Ángela Romero-Astvaldsson did not take on an easy task when she set out to study Pronturario (1993) and Claudia conversa (1995) by the Argentine writer, critic and former professor David Viñas (born 1929). These were his two most recent novels at the time of her research (Viñas has since published Tartabul, in 2006). Romero-Astvaldsson proposes to demonstrate the change in form and content that were emerging in Viñas's always challenging narratives. She notes that despite Viñas's long career in creative writing and criticism, La Obra Narrativa de David Viñas is the first book-length study of his novels. The book is based in part on extensive interviews with the author in Buenos Aires in 1996 (12). Romero-Astvaldsson begins her book by focusing on the historical and political realities surrounding Viñas while he was growing up in Buenos Aires from 1945 to 1955, during the so-called classical Peronist era. Then she introduces Viñas's multifaceted narrative techniques, emphasizing the structural and thematic complexity of his work and drawing the reader's attention to his locally and internationally well-known criticism of political developments in Argentina. She elaborates on his active involvement within the porteño intellectual circles, and suggests that Viñas creates a multifaceted reality in his narrative because he is trying to present the complex, global vision of the groups he associated with. Viñas's participation in the literary bulletin Contorno, first published in 1953, was fundamental, she explains, because Viñas saw himself first and foremost as a social subject embedded in his immediate political reality. After dedicating the first two chapters to setting the stage, in both political and literary terms, Romero-Astvaldsson familiarizes her readers with Viñas's earlier literary accomplishments and practices and their context. In Chapter III, 'La narrativa Viñista' (1955–1995), although she perhaps dwells in too much detail on the role of other literary figures of the times (Borges, the O'Campo sisters and others), Romero-Astvaldsson succeeds in presenting an overview of the trends, tactics and turbulence that ruled Argentine intellectual activities up to and during the military rule from 1976–1983. Viñas's continuous fierce criticism of political developments, expressed in his narrative and in his essays, his exile to Mexico, and the tragic disappearance of his two children, all document his personal and profound distrust of his country's authorities. When Romero-Astvaldson turns her full attention to the study of Viñas's novels from the nineteen-nineties, she recognizes their possible limited distribution and she therefore briefly summarizes their content. She goes on to demonstrate their highly dense political components, their aim of reflecting Argentine reality at a given historical time, and their apparent criticism and questioning of then current state of affairs. In Pronturaio, she confirms, 'Buenos Aires is indisputably the essential sphere in Viñas' writing' (169). [End Page 266] The novel's essay-like presentation enhances its purpose and place within social criticism. The divide between art and social science is abolished; for Viñas, art cannot stand apart from the field of social and political commentary. Romero-Astvaldsson's textual analysis, as presented in Chapters IV, V and VI (108–236), focuses on various elements of narrative structure and thematic components, which are intertwined. Temporal dynamics are analysed in noticeable detail. This includes issues such as absence of linear narration, the exposure of different and fragmented realities, and chaotic use of present and past tenses. Inevitably, multiple narrative voices and the fragmented 'I' narrator is also a part of the author's analysis. Romero-Astvaldsson recognizes that Claudia conversa makes some break from the complexities existing in Viñas's former fiction, but she does not share his view that the novel is presented in a linear mode. Sociocultural factors in children’s written narrative production

Narrative themes, such as search and discovery, are universal and transcend the modularity of language, culture, time, and physical setting. Narratives share a cohesive organizational structure. This study, by assessing children’s written versions, examines their understanding and integration of the story structure of a series of simple black and white line drawings. The study was conducted with students from the second, fourth, and sixth grades in low and high SES schools. Our results showed that the written narratives of the low SES groups, across the grade levels, had fewer narrative structure elements (overall, inter, and intra episode relationships) than those of their high SES counterparts. Although the results for the high SES groups show a relationship between the narrative structure elements and text length, this relationship is not evident in the low SES results. These results may have implications for future investigation and possible application in educational policy, especially for low SES populations.

Global Texts, Narrativity and the Construction of Local and Global Meanings in Television News

Abstract This article discusses the relevance of narrative analysis to the study of media globalization by presenting results of an ongoing study of television news in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. It discusses issues of local and global meanings by focusing on a number of elements of narrative structure (time, valence, story/discourse, themes, drama, genre, and myths) and argues that each element presents ways to track particularistic and universalistic meanings in television news. A concluding section emphasizes the importance of narrative analysis to the study of globalization with a discussion of live global television events.(Journalism and Mass Communication)
