Molecular Properties of Branched Aliphatic α-Amino Acids in Water.

Four branched-chain aliphatic α-amino acids─α-alanine, valine, leucine, and isoleucine (1-4)─were investigated by quantum-chemical calculations in water as a solvent by two methods. The B3LYP variant of DFT calculations was used to obtain the electronic structure and molecular descriptors of these species in their canonical amino acid form as well as the related zwitterionic form in three oxidation states (cation, neutral molecule, and anion). A total of 24 species were subjected to full geometry optimization and complete vibration analysis. Quantities related to ionization or affinity processes were evaluated under adiabatic conditions. The calculated standard reaction Gibbs energy facilitates evaluation of the absolute oxidation and reduction potential. The absolute reduction potential correlates with the electrophilicity index, and the absolute oxidation potential correlates with the adiabatic ionization energy. This finding makes it possible to skip the tedious vibrational analysis and use electronic properties to estimate the redox potentials. The molecular descriptors were compared with the calculated properties of four linear amino acids (glycine, β-alanine, GABA, and DAVA). Parallel calculations using the DLPNO-CCSD(T) method gave analogous results for 24 species. The absolute oxidation potential was related to the antioxidant activity index, which showed only a moderate antioxidant activity of 1-4.

Structural and electronic properties of Ag-, Ni-, and Zn-doped copper chalcogenides – computational studies

Copper chalcogenides are among the most extensively studied materials for their application as thermoelectric materials and narrow-bandgap semiconductors for electrocatalytic purposes. The state-of-the-art literature predominantly adopts an experimental approach, often overlooking issues of stability and subtle changes in electronic structure arising from defect formation or doping in these systems. This study focuses on a computational approach to copper(I) chalcogenides doped with the most common impurities, namely Ag, Ni, and Zn. By considering formation energies and defect formation energies, the study offers a discussion with literature data concerning long-term stability of these systems, particularly under chemical/temperature gradient conditions and related ion migration processes. In subsequent sections, the impact of the presence of chosen impurities, as well as vacancies in the cationic sublattice, on structural parameters and electronic structure is presented. This includes selected electronic structure descriptors, providing insights into the influence of dopants and vacancies on the potential thermoelectric and electrocatalytic properties of copper chalcogenides.

Computational investigation of structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of Ni and Zn metalloporphyrins with varying anchoring groups.

Porphyrins are prime candidates for a host of molecular electronics applications. Understanding the electronic structure and the role of anchoring groups on porphyrins is a prerequisite for researchers to comprehend their role in molecular devices at the molecular junction interface. Here, we use the density functional theory approach to investigate the influence of anchoring groups on Ni and Zn diphenylporphyrin molecules. The changes in geometry, electronic structure, and electronic descriptors were evaluated. There are minimal changes observed in geometry when changing the metal from Ni to Zn and the anchoring group. However, we find that the distribution of electron density changes when changing the anchoring group in the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. This has a direct effect on electronic descriptors such as global hardness, softness, and electrophilicity. Additionally, the optical spectra of both Ni and Zn diphenylporphyrin molecules exhibit either blue or red shifts when changing the anchoring group. These results indicate the importance of the anchoring group on the electronic structure and optical properties of porphyrin molecules.

Generalized Substrate Screening GW for Covalently Bonded Interfaces.

An accurate description of the interfacial quasiparticle electronic structure is key to the design of heterogeneous materials. While the first-principles GW approach is state-of-the-art, the computational cost is high for large interface systems. This has led to the substrate screening GW approach for weakly coupled interfaces, which breaks down for covalently bonded interfaces. In this work, we present the generalized substrate screening GW approach, based on the following two considerations: (i) the contribution of the interfacial covalent bond to the polarizability can be efficiently calculated with a low energy cutoff; (ii) the contribution of the deprotonated adsorbate to the interface polarizability can be well approximated by that of the protonated molecule. Our approach is exemplified using interfaces formed between benzene-1,4-dithiol (BDT) and Au(111), which feature the widely used Au-S bonds in experiments. Our work provides a robust and simple scheme for accurate and efficient GW calculations of covalently bonded interfaces.

Universal electronic descriptors for optimizing hydrogen evolution in transition metal-doped MXenes

The integration of transition metal (TM) atoms into two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) has been identified as a promising strategy for enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. However, the vast combinatorial space presents challenges for rapid catalyst screening. In response, high-throughput calculations were conducted on Ti2CO2 and Zr2CO2 doped with a wide array of TM single atoms. The local structural and corresponding electronic structural changes were analyzed, with an emphasis on their implications for HER performance. Furthermore, universal electronic descriptors were developed using the Sure Independence Screening and Sparsifying Operator (SISSO) method, harmonizing the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*) trends across different MXenes substrates doped with TM atoms. These descriptors enabled the prediction of Cr, Fe, Ru, Pd, Os, and Ir as effective dopants for optimizing the ΔGH* of Hf2CO2, resulting in a reduction of ΔGH* from 1.082 eV to within ±0.2 eV. Our work not only highlights the potential of these TM dopants in significantly enhancing the catalytic activity of MXenes but also underscores the value of universal electronic structure descriptors in rapidly identifying and developing high-performance HER catalysts.

From computational screening to the synthesis of a promising OER catalyst.

The search for new materials can be laborious and expensive. Given the challenges that mankind faces today concerning the climate change crisis, the need to accelerate materials discovery for applications like water-splitting could be very relevant for a renewable economy. In this work, we introduce a computational framework to predict the activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, in order to accelerate the discovery of materials that can facilitate water splitting. We use this framework to screen 6155 ternary-phase spinel oxides and have isolated 33 candidates which are predicted to have potentially high OER activity. We have also trained a machine learning model to predict the binding energies of the *O, *OH and *OOH intermediates calculated within this workflow to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between electronic structure descriptors and OER activity. Out of the 33 candidates predicted to have high OER activity, we have synthesized three compounds and characterized them using linear sweep voltammetry to gauge their performance in OER. From these three catalyst materials, we have identified a new material, Co2.5Ga0.5O4, that is competitive with benchmark OER catalysts in the literature with a low overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope at 56.0 mV dec-1. Given the vast size of chemical space as well as the success of this technique to date, we believe that further application of this computational framework based on the high-throughput virtual screening of materials can lead to the discovery of additional novel, high-performing OER catalysts.

Simulating transient X-ray photoelectron spectra of Fe(CO)5 and its photodissociation products with multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory.

Accurate simulations of transient X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) provide unique opportunities to bridge the gap between theory and experiment in understanding the photoactivated dynamics in molecules and materials. However, simulating X-ray photoelectron spectra along a photochemical reaction pathway is challenging as it requires accurate description of electronic structure incorporating core-hole screening, orbital relaxation, electron correlation, and spin-orbit coupling in excited states or at nonequilibrium ground-state geometries. In this work, we employ the recently developed multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory (MR-ADC) to investigate the core-ionized states and X-ray photoelectron spectra of Fe(CO)5 and its photodissociation products (Fe(CO)4, Fe(CO)3) following excitation with 266 nm light. The simulated transient Fe 3p and CO 3σ XPS spectra incorporating spin-orbit coupling and high-order electron correlation effects are shown to be in a good agreement with the experimental measurements by Leitner et al. [J. Chem. Phys., 2018, 149, 044307]. Our calculations suggest that core-hole screening, spin-orbit coupling, and ligand-field splitting effects are similarly important in reproducing the experimentally observed chemical shifts in transient Fe 3p XPS spectra of iron carbonyl complexes. Our results also demonstrate that the MR-ADC methods can be very useful in interpreting the transient XPS spectra of transition metal compounds.

First Principle Study of Structural, Electronic, Optical Properties of Co-Doped ZnO

In this theoretical study, the electronic, structural, and optical properties of copper-doped zinc oxide (CZO) were investigated using the full-potential linearized enhanced plane wave method (FP-LAPW) based on the density functional theory (DFT). The Tran–Blaha modified Becke–Johnson exchange potential approximation (TB-mBJ) was employed to enhance the accuracy of the electronic structure description. The introduction of copper atoms as donors in the ZnO resulted in a reduction in the material’s band gap from 2.82 eV to 2.72 eV, indicating enhanced conductivity. This reduction was attributed to the Co-3d intra-band transitions, primarily in the spin-down configuration, leading to increased optical absorption in the visible range. The Fermi level of the pure ZnO shifted towards the conduction band, indicating metal-like characteristics in the CZO. Additionally, the CZO nanowires displayed a significant blue shift in their optical properties, suggesting a change in the energy band structure. These findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the CZO’s fundamental properties but also open avenues for its potential applications in optoelectronic and photonic devices, where tailored electronic and optical characteristics are crucial. This study underscores the significance of computational techniques in predicting and understanding the behavior of doped semiconductors, offering valuable insights for the design and development of novel materials for advanced electronic applications.

Theory of Hot-Carrier Generation in Bimetallic Plasmonic Catalysts.

Bimetallic nanoreactors in which a plasmonic metal is used to funnel solar energy toward a catalytic metal have recently been studied experimentally, but a detailed theoretical understanding of these systems is lacking. Here, we present theoretical results of hot-carrier generation rates of different Au-Pd nanoarchitectures. In particular, we study spherical core-shell nanoparticles with a Au core and a Pd shell as well as antenna-reactor systems consisting of a large Au nanoparticle that acts as an antenna and a smaller Pd satellite nanoparticle separated by a gap. In addition, we investigate an antenna-reactor system in which the satellite is a core-shell nanoparticle. Hot-carrier generation rates are obtained from an atomistic quantum-mechanical modeling technique which combines a solution of Maxwell's equation with a tight-binding description of the nanoparticle electronic structure. We find that antenna-reactor systems exhibit significantly higher hot-carrier generation rates in the catalytic material than the core-shell system as a result of strong electric field enhancements associated with the gap between the antenna and the satellite. For these systems, we also study the dependence of the hot-carrier generation rate on the size of the gap, the radius of the antenna nanoparticle, and the direction of light polarization. Overall, we find a strong correlation between the calculated hot-carrier generation rates and the experimentally measured chemical activity for the different Au-Pd photocatalysts. Our insights pave the way toward a microscopic understanding of hot-carrier generation in heterogeneous nanostructures for photocatalysis and other energy-conversion applications.

The application of the SCAN density functional to color centers in diamond.

Detailed characterization of deep-level color centers requires understanding their electronic and atomic structure, which is most commonly investigated utilizing the Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Standard semilocal functionals based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are inclined toward an imprecise quantitative description of defects' electronic structure. Hybrid functionals provide an improved prediction of electronic properties, albeit at a much higher computational cost. In this work, we test the newly developed Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed (SCAN) family of meta-GGA density functionals for selected color centers in diamond. In particular, we study nitrogen-, silicon-, germanium-, and tin-vacancy centers that have been recently investigated for their use in quantum technological applications. We show that SCAN and its derivatives, the rSCAN and r2SCAN functionals, significantly improve the calculated energies of optical transitions within the delta-self-consistent-field approach, almost reaching the accuracy of the hybrid Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) functional. In the case of the NV- center, we also show that the SCAN family of functionals improves the description of the adiabatic potential energy surfaces compared to both GGA and hybrid functionals, improving calculated luminescence lineshapes. As a result of these findings, we recommend using the SCAN family of functionals as a promising alternative for studying color centers in solids.

Density functional descriptions of interfacial electronic structure

Heterogeneous interfaces are central to many energy-related applications in the nanoscale. From the first-principles electronic structure perspective, one of the outstanding problems is accurately and efficiently calculating how the frontier quasiparticle levels of one component are aligned in energy with those of another at the interface, i.e., the so-called interfacial band alignment or level alignment. The alignment or the energy offset of these frontier levels is phenomenologically associated with the charge-transfer barrier across the interface and therefore dictates the interfacial dynamics. Although many-body perturbation theory provides a formally rigorous framework for computing the interfacial quasiparticle electronic structure, it is often associated with a high computational cost and is limited by its perturbative nature. It is, therefore, of great interest to develop practical alternatives, preferably based on density functional theory (DFT), which is known for its balance between efficiency and accuracy. However, conventional developments of density functionals largely focus on total energies and thermodynamic properties, and the design of functionals aiming for interfacial electronic structure is only emerging recently. This Review is dedicated to a self-contained narrative of the interfacial electronic structure problem and the efforts of the DFT community in tackling it. Since interfaces are closely related to surfaces, we first discuss the key physics behind the surface and interface electronic structure, namely, the image potential and the gap renormalization. This is followed by a review of early examinations of the surface exchange-correlation hole and the exchange-correlation potential, which are central quantities in DFT. Finally, we survey two modern endeavors in functional development that focus on the interfacial electronic structure, namely, the dielectric-dependent hybrids and local hybrids.

Understanding the Excited-State Relaxation Mechanisms of Xanthophyll Lutein by Multi-configurational Electronic Structure Calculations.

The contradictory behaviors in light harvesting and non-photochemical quenching make xanthophyll lutein the most attractive functional molecule in photosynthesis. Despite several theoretical simulations on the spectral properties and excited-state dynamics, the atomic-level photophysical mechanisms need to be further studied and established, especially for an accurate description of geometric and electronic structures of conical intersections for the lowest several electronic states of lutein. In the present work, semiempirical OM2/MRCI and multi-configurational restricted active space self-consistent field methods were performed to optimize the minima and conical intersections in and between the 1Ag-, 2Ag-, 1Bu+, and 1Bu- states. Meanwhile, the relative energies were refined by MS-CASPT2(10,8)/6-31G*, which can reproduce correct electronic state properties as those in the spectroscopic experiments. Based on the above calculation results, we proposed a possible excited-state relaxation mechanism for lutein from its initially populated 1Bu+ state. Once excited to the optically bright 1Bu+ state, the system will propagate along the key reaction coordinate, i.e., the stretching vibration of the conjugated carbon chain. During this period of time, the 1Bu- state will participate in and forms a resonance state between the 1Bu- and 1Bu+ states. Later, the system will rapidly hop to the 2Ag- state via the 1Bu+/2Ag- conical intersection. Finally, the lutein molecule will survive in the 2Ag- state for a relatively long time before it internally converts to the ground state directly or via a twisted S1/S0 conical intersection. Notably, though the photophysical picture may be very different in solvents and proteins, the current theoretical study proposed a promising calculation protocol and also provided many valuable mechanistic insights for lutein and similar carotenoids.

Prediction of Redox Power for Photocatalysts: Synergistic Combination of DFT and Machine Learning.

The accurate prediction of excited state properties is a key element of rational photocatalyst design. This involves the prediction of ground and excited state redox potentials, for which an accurate description of electronic structures is needed. Even with highly sophisticated computational approaches, however, a number of difficulties arise from the complexity of excited state redox potentials, as they require the calculation of the corresponding ground state redox potentials and the estimation of the 0-0 transition energies (E0,0). In this study, we have systematically evaluated the performance of DFT methods for these quantities on a set of 37 organic photocatalysts representing 9 different chromophore scaffolds. We have found that the ground state redox potentials can be predicted with reasonable accuracy that can be further improved by rationally minimizing the systematic underestimations. The challenging part is to obtain E0,0, as calculating it directly is highly demanding and its accuracy depends strongly on the DFT functional employed. We have found that approximating E0,0 with appropriately scaled vertical absorption energies offers the best compromise between accuracy and computational effort. An even more accurate and cost-effective approach, however, is to predict E0,0 with machine learning and avoid the use of DFT for excited state calculations. Indeed, the best excited state redox potential predictions are achieved with the combination of M062X for ground state redox potentials and machine learning (ML) for E0,0. With this protocol, the excited state redox potential windows of the photocatalyst frameworks could be adequately predicted. This shows the potential of combining DFT with ML in the computational design of photocatalysts with preferred photochemical properties.

A Geminal Method Based on the Generalized Electron Pairing Applied to the Heisenberg Model of Hydrocarbons

In the approximate valence bond (VB) description of molecular electronic structures, the resonating VB effect might be incorporated in an efficient manner by mixing the triplet component into conventional singlet geminals. We developed a variational optimization scheme for this generalized pairing type wave function in the framework of the spin Hamiltonian model. With numerical verifications, we found the resonance stabilization is partially described through the contamination of higher spin states for molecules such as non-Kekulé hydrocarbons.

Neuro-Evolutive Modeling of Transition Temperatures for Five-Ring Bent-Core Molecules Derived from Resorcinol

Determining the phase transition temperature of different types of liquid crystals based on their structural parameters is a complex problem. The experimental work might be eliminated or reduced if prediction strategies could effectively anticipate the behavior of liquid crystalline systems. Neuro-evolutive modeling based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and a differential evolution (DE) algorithm was applied to predict the phase transition temperatures of bent-core molecules based on their resorcinol core. By these means, structural parameters such as the nature of the linking groups, the position, size and number of lateral substituents on the central core or calamitic wings and the length of the terminal chains were taken into account as factors that influence the liquid crystalline properties. A number of 172 bent-core compounds with symmetrical calamitic wings were selected from the literature. All corresponding structures were fully optimized using the DFT, and the molecular descriptors were calculated afterward. In the first step, the ANN-DE approach predicted the mesophase presence for the analyzed compounds. Next, ANN models were determined to predict the transition temperatures and whether or not the bent-core compounds were mesogenic. Simple structural, thermophysical and electronic structure descriptors were considered as inputs in the dataset. As a result, the models determined for each individual temperature have an R2 that varied from 0.89 to 0.98, indicating their capability to estimate the transition temperatures for the selected compounds. Moreover, the impact analysis of the inputs on the predicted temperatures showed that, in most cases, the presence or not of liquid crystalline properties represents the most influential feature.

Linearly Bridging N2 versus CO: Chemical Bonding and Spin‐Controlled Reactivity.

AbstractThe synthesis of the linearly N2 bridged, dichromium complex [(μ‐N2){Cr(PNP)}2] (PNP=N(CHCHPtBu2)2) is reported. Experimental and computational data favor a three‐spin electronic structure model with high‐spin CrII ions that are antiferromagnetically coupled to an N22− bridge due to spin‐polarized backbonding. Reaction with CO gave isocarbonyl complex [(PNP)(CO)2Cr(μ‐CO)Cr(PNP)] and [(PNP)(CO)2Cr(μ‐N2)Cr(PNP)] could be trapped as intermediate. The latter is best described by a (ls‐CrI)(N2−)(hs‐CrII) ground state model, while more covalent bonding with the CO bridge is reflected by a (ls‐Cr0)(CO0)(hs‐CrII) electronic structure description. The selectivity of the carbonylation reaction is attributed to a spin transition after binding of the first CO ligand to [(μ‐N2){Cr(PNP)}2].

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase.

Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ2-C atoms and four pendant S donors.The [L2Fe2] (L = {[Ph2P(S)]2C}2-) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe2II and mixed-valence FeIIFeIII. The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide tBuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C-C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

Electronic and optical properties of the R3 Ni3TeO6 compound described by the modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential

Calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) have been realized to study the electronic and optical properties of the Ni3TeO6 compound with a hexagonal crystal structure (R3 space group). Exchange and correlation electronic effects were described by a modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) potential in its semiconductor variance form. The collinear antiferromagnetic state of the R3 Ni3TeO6 compound was simulated. The calculated spin magnetic moment of the Ni atoms (1.65 μB) was found to be in good agreement with the experimental result (2.03 μB). Moreover, the calculated optical band gap (2.8 eV) agreed well with the experimental prediction (2.5 eV). These facts suggest a reliable electronic structure description of the material. Hence, we also calculated the complex dielectric function, optical absorption spectrum, refractive index, and extinction coefficient. The optical absorption spectrum was interpreted based on the determined electronic structure. The direct optical absorption edge of the material was characterized by the electronic transitions from O 2p states to Te 5s states and from Ni 3d states to O 2p states. This description did not agree with previous ones based on DFT + U calculations or those made based on the electronic structure of the Ni3V2O8 compound. Thus, an alternative description of the electronic structure of the R3 Ni3TeO6 compound in its antiferromagnetic state using the DFT + mBJ calculations has been suggested, and consequently a new origin for the optical absorption observed around the optical band gap.

Revisiting Formal Copper(III) Complexes: Bridging Perspectives with Quasi-d 10 Configurations.

The formal Cu(III) complex [Cu(CF3)4]1- has often served as a paradigmatic example of challenging oxidation state assignment - with many reports proposing conflicting descriptions. Here we report a computational analysis of this compound, employing Energy Decomposition Analysis and Intrinsic Bond Orbital Analysis. We present a quasi-d 10 perspective of the metal centre, resulting from ambiguities in d-electron counting. The implications for describing reactions which undergo oxidation state changes, such as the formal reductive elimination from the analogous [Cu(CF3)3(CH2Ph)]1- complex (Paeth et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019, 141, 3153), are probed. Electron flow analysis finds that the changes in electronic structure may be understood as a quasi-d 10 to d 10 transition at the metal centre, rendering this process essentially redox neutral. This is reminiscent of a previously studied formal Ni(IV) complex (Steen et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 13133-13139), and indicates that our description of electronic structure has implications for the understanding of elementary organometallic reaction steps.
