Distortion effects for electron excitation in ion-atom collisions.

Electron excitation from monoelectronic targets by impact of bare ions from low intermediate to high collision energies is theoretically studied by using the symmetric eikonal approximation. In addition, multichannel semiclassical impact-parameter calculations are also carried out. Distortion effects introduced by the projectile charge are shown to appear in the theoretical models at low intermediate collision energies.

Symmetric eikonal approximation for electron excitation in ion-atom collisions

The symmetric eikonal approximation recently developed for electron capture is extended to electron excitation in ion-atom collisions. Differential and total cross sections are compared with other theoretical and experimental data for the H++H(1s) to H++H(n=2) system. The angular influence of excitation to the 2s and 2p levels is also analysed.

Variational method for electron excitation in ion-atom collisions

The variational principle is formulated for wave functions with complex time-dependent parameters. Their properties are illustrated by exactly solvable models. The problem of finding the relevant parameters is investigated. As an example we study the energy transfer to an electron during a symmetric ion-atom collision.
