Development of a toroidally resolved broadband ECE imaging system for measurement of turbulent fluctuations on the KSTAR.

The two electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) systems installed at adjacent ports (G and H) on the KSTAR tokamak incorporate large-aperture mm-wave optics, broadband electronics, and high speed digitization (up to 1 MSa/s) for 2D and quasi-3D visualization of MHD-scale fluid dynamics. Recently, the ECEI systems have been proved to be capable of visualization of smaller scale fluctuations albeit with a limited spatiotemporal resolution and even capable of measurement of ion cyclotron harmonic waves by direct high-speed sampling of the ECE IF signals. A four-channel prototype subsystem with a higher sampling rate up to 16 GS/s has been integrated into the G-port ECEI system, enabling the measurement of plasma waves in the GHz range in the form of modulated ECE signals and characterization of high-frequency turbulence during the evolution of pedestal. To achieve higher toroidal resolution in the turbulence measurement, the H-port ECEI system is now being upgraded to have a toroidally dual detector array of 2(toroidal) × 12(vertical) × 8(radial) channel configuration and a high-speed subsystem of 2(toroidal) × 4 channel configuration. The new mm-wave optics has been designed via beam propagation simulation, and the measured performance of the fabricated lens indicates a toroidal resolution of 8-10cm depending on the focus position and zoom factor, allowing for the measurement of parallel wavenumber up to k‖ ∼ 0.8cm-1.

The co-located arrangement of ECEI and MIR microwave imaging diagnostics on EAST tokamak

The co-located configuration of Passive Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) and active Microwave Imaging Reflectometry (MIR) diagnostics systems has been successfully implemented on the EAST fusion reactor. These advanced 2D microwave diagnostic tools offer 10–20 mm poloidal spatial resolution through large aperture quasi optics. This arrangement not only optimizes the utilization of limited observation windows but also facilitates concurrent measurements of plasma density and electron temperature at specific toroidal positions. This co-located setup holds great promise for enhancing research into electron heat transport and other pivotal plasma phenomena.

ECEI characterization of pedestal fluctuations in quiescent H-mode plasmas in DIII-D

Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) is employed to characterize the magneto hydraulics dynamics (MHD) fluctuations at the quiescent H-mode pedestals in DIII-D. Pedestal MHD fluctuations cause ECE radiation temperature fluctuations in both the pedestal and scrape-off-layer (SOL). A synthetic ECE platform is utilized for detailed interpretation of the ECEI signals in the SOL and pedestal regions. It is observed that the ECE radiation , which is located in the SOL region according to the cold and optically thick plasma resonance assumption, is extremely sensitive to MHD radial displacements near the separatrix, exhibiting radiation inversion to at the pedestal. Here, the radiation inversion refers to the opposite phase between the radiation fluctuation at the pedestal and the radiation fluctuation at the SOL. Consequently, the quasi-coherent MHD (QCM), which displays a radiation inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial structure that has a strong displacement near the separatrix. In contrast, the edge harmonic oscillation (EHO), which displays weak or no inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial displacement structure peaking at the pedestal top. The ECEI data, interpreted with synthetic ECE, are in qualitative agreement with beam emission spectroscopy measurements on DIII-D for the relative radial extent and localization of the EHO and QCM. The high sensitivity of ECE radiation to separatrix displacements can be used to detect turbulence or MHD fluctuations near the separatrix, which may affect the transport across the separatrix and the wetted area in the divertor. The inversion measured with an ECE or ECEI system potentially provides important information on the magnetic field at the separatrix, which helps constrain the pedestal equilibrium reconstruction and achieve an unambiguous mapping of the ECE/ECEI system with respect to the separatrix.

W-Band Modular Antenna/Detector Array for the Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging System in KSTAR

A design of a modular antenna/detector array for the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging system at the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is proposed. The modular antenna/detector array is based on a unit antenna/detector module, which consists of an elliptical mini-lens, a dual-dipole antenna, an antenna balun, a low-noise amplifier, and a metal frame. The proposed modular antenna/detector array resolves the problem in the conventional antenna/detector array where one faulty channel requires the entire array to be removed for the service. With the proposed modular array, each channel module can be easily and independently removed and replaced without interference to the rest of the array, thus minimizing the interrupted service time for maintenance. Moreover, the unit channel modules can be efficiently updated under a variety of the tokamak operation conditions. The antenna/detector modules are optimized to have improved performance, and are tested in a W-band test setup, and consistently provide the gain increase by 10~20 dB as compared with the conventional antenna/detector array. A set of the proposed modular antenna/detector array is currently installed and tested in the KSTAR ECE imaging system, and will consistently produce the improved ECE imaging to monitor MHD instability activities under various plasma operation conditions.

Development of the Q-band ECE imaging system in the large helical device

In this study, we developed the Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system with the Q-band in the Large Helical Device (LHD). ECEI measurement makes it possible to obtain the spatiotemporal structure of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities in the high-β plasma. Although there were several difficulties for realizing the multi-channelization, such as local oscillator (LO) optics and an expensive high-power LO source, we have solved these problems by developing a Local Integrated Antenna array (LIA) which has an internal LO supply, using a frequency doubler integrated circuit on each channel, instead of a conventional Horn-antenna Mixer Array (HMA) with common LOs. In addition, we have made some improvements to enhance the quality of the measurement signal. First, we developed and introduced notch filters that prevent the strong Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) stray signal from being mixed into the measurement circuit. Second, the position of the doubler built in the printed circuit board was reconsidered to prevent the mixing of higher harmonic components into the mixer. Also, we have adopted the Logarithmic detector (LOG detector) to deal with the wide dynamic range of the plasma fluctuation. After these improvements, for the first time, we could successfully obtain the initial results of the two-dimensional temperature distribution and its fluctuation distribution in the LHD.

Observation of off-axis sawtooth oscillations during the presence of nonlinear mode couplings in HL-2A NBI heated plasmas

Off-axis sawtooth oscillations during the presence of nonlinear coupling between toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) and tearing mode are firstly observed in the plasma without two q = 2 rational surfaces on HL-2A tokamak. Those low frequency oscillations always take place followed by nonlinear interaction processes and the off-axis features have been confirmed by multiple diagnostics, such as soft x-ray arrays and electron cyclotron emission imaging systems. A possible physical mechanism is proposed for interpretation of those off-axis oscillations. That is, nonlinear interaction between TAEs and tearing mode causes significant losses of fast ions though the spacial overlapped global mode structure, then makes a drop in torque and leads to rotation braking or even mode locking. When magnetic fluctuation becomes large enough during braking or locking, the resulting high amplitude saturated mode leads to subsequent or immediate collapse at the q = 2 rational surface.

System-on-chip upgrade of millimeter-wave imaging diagnostics for fusion plasma.

Monolithic, millimeter wave "system-on-chip" technology has been employed in chip heterodyne radiometers in a newly developed Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system on the DIII-D tokamak for 2D electron temperature and fluctuation diagnostics. The system employs 20 horn-waveguide receiver modules each with customized W-band (75-110GHz) monolithic microwave integrated circuit chips comprising a W-band low noise amplifier, a balanced mixer, a ×2 local oscillator (LO) frequency doubler, and two intermediate frequency amplifier stages in each module. Compared to previous quasi-optical ECEI arrays with Schottky mixer diodes mounted on planar antennas, the upgraded W-band array exhibits >30 dB additional gain and 20× improvement in noise temperature; an internal eight times multiplier chain is used to provide LO coupling, thereby eliminating the need for quasi-optical coupling. The horn-waveguide shielding housing avoids out-of-band noise interference on each module. The upgraded ECEI system plays an important role for absolute electron temperature and fluctuation measurements for edge and core region transport physics studies. An F-band receiver chip (up to 140GHz) is under development for additional fusion facilities with a higher toroidal magnetic field. Visualization diagnostics provide multi-scale and multi-dimensional data in plasma profile evolution. A significant aspect of imaging measurement is focusing on artificial intelligence for science applications.

Noise suppression for MHD characterization with electron cyclotron emission imaging 1D technique

Significant noise suppression for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) mode characterization in the spatial and spectral domain is achieved by processing two-dimensional (2D) electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) data with a one-dimensional (1D) ECEI technique using a short time window (). The technique is applied to detect toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) in the temporal spectrum and fit their radial envelope using the data from the DIII-D tokamak W-band 2D ECEI system. Using the data length (time window) of only 1 , the 1D ECEI can clearly detect the TAEs (∼100 ) on the spectrum, while similar spectrum quality requires ∼10 data length with the cross power spectrum between two midplane ECEI channels. The 1D ECEI technique also effectively avoids biased fitting when resolving the fine structure of the TAE’s radial envelope. The radially spatial resolution of 1D ECEI is constrained by the finite ECE radiation volume of the ECEI receiver. With forward radiation modeling, we find the DIII-D ECEI system can sensitively measure the even parity MHD activities, for which the mode width is >15 mm, and tearing modes (odd parity MHD activities), for which the island full width is >30 mm.

W-band system-on-chip electron cyclotron emission imaging system on DIII-D.

Monolithic, millimeter-wave "system-on-chip" (SoC) technology has been employed in heterodyne receiver integrated circuit radiometers in a newly developed Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system on the DIII-D tokamak for 2D electron temperature profile and fluctuation evolution diagnostics. A prototype module operating in the E-band (72 GHz-80 GHz) was first employed in a 2 × 10 element array that demonstrated significant improvements over the previous quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer arrays during the 2018 operational campaign of the DIII-D tokamak. For compatibility with International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor relevant scenarios on DIII-D, the SoC ECEI system was upgraded with 20 horn-waveguide receiver modules. Each individual module contains a University of California Davis designed W-band (75 GHz-110 GHz) receiver die that integrates a broadband low noise amplifier, a double balanced down-converting mixer, and a ×4 multiplier on the local oscillator (LO) chain. A ×2 multiplier and two IF amplifiers are packaged and selected to further boost the signal strength and downconvert the signal frequency. The upgraded W-band array exhibits >30 dB additional gain and 20× improvement in noise temperature compared with the previous Schottky diode radio frequency mixer input systems; an internal 8 times multiplier chain is used to bring down the LO frequency below 12 GHz, thereby obviating the need for a large aperture for quasi-optical LO coupling and replacing it with coaxial connectors. Horn-waveguide shielding housing avoids out-of-band noise interference on each individual module. The upgraded ECEI system plays an important role for absolute electron temperature evolution and fluctuation measurements for edge and core region transport physics studies.

A Constant Corrugation Circular Waveguide for High-Pass Signal Diagnostics in ECEI System at 75–110 GHz

In this work, a high-pass waveguide filter with constant circular corrugations is presented. The proposed design allows propagation of HE11 mode which has similar Gaussian characteristics of the signals present in a fusion reactor. The device is designed to operate in W-band, i.e., 75–110 GHz, and it generates a wide passband of approximately 30 GHz. The internal corrugations in the proposed design are kept constant which makes fabrication relatively simpler. The proposed high-pass metallic waveguide is numerically analyzed, simulated, and fabricated for experimental validation. The measured transmission co-efficient (S21) shows good agreement with the simulated result and passband of 28 GHz was obtained. The high-pass filter can be effectively used in the electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) system used in fusion plasma experiments for signal diagnostics.

Development of intelligent control module for the J-TEXT electron cyclotron emission imaging system

An Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system has been developed on the J-TEXT tokamak and employed for the multi-dimensional electron temperature fluctuation imaging measurement in 2019 campaign. The intelligent control module has been developed and been used to flexibly setup the 256-channel ECEI system configurations for different plasma scenarios. The adjustments of key parameters are merged in this module including size and position of the geometric observation window, and the dynamic range of the signal and image resolution. The user-friendly interface is also developed for the tokamak operator to set the ECEI system focusing on physics interested region. This module is installed close to the diagnostic system around the J-TEXT tokamak, which can be remotely controlled by authorized operators in the control room. It significantly improves ECEI flexibility and stability, and also keeps the operation technician away from the harsh radiation environment.

BOUT++ nonlinear simulation for a comparative study with the measured 2D ELM structures in the KSTAR H-mode plasma

Time-dependent nonlinear simulation using the BOUT++ 3-field model is performed for a study of edge localized mode (ELM) dynamics in KSTAR H-mode plasmas. The simulated results of the ELM evolution are directly compared with the 2D ELM structures, measured by electron cyclotron emission imaging systems, from the initial growth to crash phase. The simulation results are qualitatively in good agreement with the observations. Specifically, it is notable in simulation and experiment that higher-n modes in a quasi-steady state phase evolve into lower-n modes close to the ELM-crash in time. It suggests that lower-n modes may be responsible for the onset of the crash. A postanalysis supports that nonlinear mode coupling between toroidal harmonics may drive the lower-n mode.

Mode analysis limitations of ECE-I & ECE measurements at the plasma edge

Interpretation of the Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) and ECE Imaging (ECE-I) measurements concerning the measurement position and the radiation temperature (Trad) at the plasma edge is associated with significant uncertainty. Various limitations such as low and high-density limits, relativistic and Doppler shift-broadening, mode overlap were identified in the past. Here, we analyse the influence of density profile variation onto the radiation temperature in H-mode plasmas at ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. We show that, in the region of steep gradients, the variation of the density profile leads to an outward-shift of the measurement position, towards lower Trad. The analysis is extended towards the study of the contribution of the ordinary mode (O-mode) emission to the measured Trad at the plasma edge. With this analysis, we show the qualitative agreement between experimental observations and modeling when taking into account the O-mode contribution to the ECE measurements. All of these effects are assessed via the Electron Cyclotron Radiation transport forward model that is now routinely used to model the response of the ECE-I and ECE systems in different plasma scenarios.

Development of ECE/ECEI diagnostics and MHD-related studies on HL-2A tokamak

A novel 60-channel electron cyclotron emission (ECE) radiometer has been designed and tested for the measurement of electron temperature profiles on the HL-2A tokamak. This system is based on the intermediate frequency division technique, and has the features of wide working frequency range (60−90 GHz) and high temporal-spatial resolution (3 µs, 1 cm), which covers almost the entire plasma region. Also, an electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) system has been developed for studying two dimensional electron temperature fluctuations. It is comprised of several front-end quasi-optical lenses, a 24 channel heterodyne imaging array with a tunable RF frequency range spanning 60−135 GHz, and a set of back-end ECEI electronics that together generate two 24×8 array images of the 2nd harmonic X-mode electron cyclotron emission from the HL-2A plasma. The measurement region can be flexibly shifted due to two independent local oscillator sources, and the field of view can be adjusted easily by changing the position of the zoom lenses as well. The temporal resolution is about 2.5 µs and the achievable spatial resolution is 1 cm. The ECE/ECEI diagnostics have been demonstrated to be powerful tools to study MHD-related physics including the multi-scale interaction between macro-scale MHD and micro-scale turbulence on the HL-2A tokamak.

Synthetic diagnostic for electron cyclotron emission imaging.

Synthetic diagnostics are aimed at simulating the response of diagnostic systems under actual experimental scenarios and are the key to drawing quantitative inferences from experimental data. The synthetic Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostic is suitable for evaluation of the improvement arising from the application of Field Curvature Adjustment (FCA) lenses in the design of the upgraded Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) tokamak ECEI system. In previous ECEI systems, a curved image plane is inevitable in optics systems comprising only convex lenses, which leads to significant crosstalk between vertically adjacent channels and strongly limits the vertical channel resolution of the imaging system. The synthetic ECEI diagnostic results show that, with FCA lenses applied, the upgraded ECEI system has significant advantages to focus on high poloidal wavenumber structures with the aberrations from the spherical surfaces corrected and the various artifacts related to the field curvature suppressed. Also, the synthetic ECEI diagnostic is used for some quantitative calculations to partially decouple the effect of density fluctuations and temperature fluctuations for a given plasma.

Liquid crystal polymer receiver modules for electron cyclotron emission imaging on the DIII-D tokamak.

A new generation of millimeter-wave heterodyne imaging receiver arrays has been developed and demonstrated on the DIII-D electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) system. Improved circuit integration, improved noise performance, and enhanced shielding from out-of-band emission are made possible by using advanced liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates and monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) receiver chips. This array exhibits ∼15 dB additional gain and >30× reduction in noise temperature compared to previous generation ECEI arrays. Each LCP horn-waveguide module houses a 3 × 3 mm GaAs MMIC receiver chip, which consists of a low noise millimeter-wave preamplifier, balanced mixer, and IF amplifier together with a local oscillator multiplier chain driven at ∼12 GHz. A proof-of-principle partial LCP instrument with 5 poloidal channels was installed on DIII-D in 2017, with a full proof-of-principle system (20 poloidal × 8 radial channels) installed and commissioned in early 2018. The enhanced shielding of the LCP modules is seen to greatly reduce the sensitivity of ECEI signals to out-of-band microwave noise which has plagued previous ECEI studies on DIII-D. The LCP ECEI system is expected to be a valuable diagnostic tool for pedestal region measurements, focusing particularly on electron temperature evolution during edge localized mode bursting.

Diagnostic capacity of electron cyclotron emission imaging system with continuous large observation area on EAST tokamak.

Electron cyclotron emission imaging on EAST provides direct measurements of the 2-D electron temperature dynamics in a continuous large observation area with high temporal and spatial resolution. Besides the normal MHD investigation, a system with a view field large enough to cover the core plasma region has been applied to extract more plasma information, such as the plasma center location, the deposition location of auxiliary heating, and the core toroidal rotation speed. These results solely based on electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) data are consistent with the results of the equilibrium fitting (EFIT), numerical code, and other diagnostics, which indicate the powerful diagnostic capacity of this ECEI system.

Formation and evolution of quasi-interchange convection cell on the HL-2A tokamak

Formation and evolution of quasi-interchange convection cell have been observed for the first time by an electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) system on the HL-2A tokamak. The instability with mode numbers of m/n = –1/–1 and a frequency of 2–4 kHz propagates in the electron diamagnetic drift direction. The mode downgrades the inner stored energy WE and enhances the divertor Hα signal, which indicates a degradation of plasma confinement. The ECEI reveals that the colder core temperature fluctuation distorts to a crescent shape, while a bubble originates from hot fluctuation gradually and draws into the concave side of the crescent. A finger-like structure can be observed during the convection process, and it presents a typical feature of the quasi-interchange model. The radial structure of the interchange mode obtained from electron cyclotron emission is quite narrow at the high field side but relatively wider at the low field side. Further analysis suggests that the discharge parameters are favorable for the excitation of interchange mode, and the stability criterion is violated in the core region. Moreover, the experimental frequency agrees with that given by the linear dispersion relation of interchange instability. The large grow rate suggests that the mode grows on a very short time scale.

The electron cyclotron emission imaging system on EAST with continuous large observation area

A 384 channels (24 vertical × 16 radial) Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system has been installed on Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). With the aid of advanced front optics, high spaital resolution around 1.1cm and flexible vertical coverage 30 ∼ 70 cm have been realized. The well-designed optics also provides a long Rayleigh length up to 70 cm even with an object length larger than 2.6 m. The electronic system has a wide immediate frequency (IF) bandwidth 2 ∼ 16.5 GHz, which enables a continuous radial coverage up to 25 cm. Benefited from advanced optics design and the wide IF bandwidth, the ECEI system with high spatial resolution can provide a large and continuous view field, especially in the radial direction, which is enough for the observation of the whole q = 1 surface. The comprehensive details of the ECEI system will be presented in this paper, along with some experimental results.

Quasi-3D electron cyclotron emission imaging on J-TEXT

Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) can provide measurements of 2D electron temperature fluctuation with high temporal and spatial resolution in magnetic fusion plasma devices. Two ECEI systems located in different toroidal ports with 67.5 degree separation have been implemented on J-TEXT to study the 3D structure of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. Each system consists of 12 (vertical) × 16 (horizontal) = 192 channels and the image of the 2nd harmonic X-mode electron cyclotron emission can be captured continuously in the core plasma region. The field curvature adjustment lens concept is developed to control the imaging plane for receiving optics of the ECEI systems. Field curvature of the image can be controlled to match the emission layer. Consequently, a quasi-3D image of the MHD instability in the core of the plasma has been achieved.
