Micron-sized fiber diamond probe for quantum precision measurement of microwave magnetic field

Abstract We present a quantitative measurement of the horizontal component of the microwave magnetic field of a coplanar waveguide using a quantum diamond probe in fiber format. The measurement results are compared in detail with simulation, showing a good consistence. Further simulation shows fiber diamond probe brings negligible disturbance to the field under measurement compared to bulk diamond. This method will find important applications ranging from electromagnetic compatibility test and failure analysis of high frequency and high complexity integrated circuits.

Research on Electromagnetic Environment Characteristic Acquisition System for Industrial Chips

With the system interconnection and intelligence of application scenario equipment, the electromagnetic environment of chips is becoming more and more complex. Problems such as communication interruption and data loss caused by electromagnetic interference often occur. The electromagnetic reliability of chips has become an important index to measure their availability. In order to effectively detect the electromagnetic reliability of industrial chips applied to specific scenarios, it is necessary to measure and analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of the application scenarios, as the boundary conditions of the electromagnetic protection simulation analysis and design of the chip, and to develop Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) test items, test limits and test methods suitable for carrying out tests and monitoring on chips. The paper presents an acquisition system, which can complete the collection of transient electromagnetic interference, steady electromagnetic field, temperature, humidity and near-field data. The transient interference measurement frequency range is 300 kHz–500 MHz, with a rising edge of 1.5 ns; the steady-state electromagnetic field measurement frequency ranges from 100 Hz to 3 GHz. By collecting the electromagnetic environmental characteristics of chips and analyzing situations in which chips are prone to interference, protective measures can be implemented.

Environmental Interference Suppression by Hybrid Segmentation Algorithm for Open-Area Electromagnetic Capability Testing

Compared with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing in anechoic rooms, open-area EMC testing takes advantage of in situ and engine running status measurement but suffers from non-negligible external electromagnetic interference. This paper proposes a novel environmental interference suppression method (named the EMC environmental interference suppression algorithm (E2ISA)) that separates signals from backgrounds via image segmentation and recognizes the near–far site signal via a group of time-varying features based on the difference in the near-site EM radiative characteristic. We find that the proposed E2ISA method, which combines the deep learning segmentation network with the classical recognition methods, is able to suppress environmental interference signals accurately. The experiment results show that the accuracy of E2ISA reaches up to 95% in the face of VHF (Very High Frequency) EMC testing tasks.

Risk Assessment for Workers with Wearable Medical Devices Exposed to Electromagnetic Fields.

The exponential diffusion of wearable medical devices (WMD) in recent years has involved people of all ages, including workers. Workers who use WMDs should be considered at a particular risk from electromagnetic fields, and in accordance with EU Directive 2013/35/EU, they require an individual risk assessment. Currently, there is no international standard that provides specific guidance on how to perform such a risk assessment. This paper focuses on the effects of electromagnetic fields on WMDs and does not consider the direct effects on human body tissues. It aims to offer practical recommendations to employers and/or health physicists for the risk assessment of workers with WMDs. Focusing on EU countries, we first describe the requirements outlined by the technical standard for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of medical electrical equipment EN 60601-1-2. Then, some general guidelines on how to perform the risk assessment are provided. The assessment can be conducted by comparing the field values measured in the workplace with the immunity test levels specified in the technical standards of medical electrical equipment. If the measured values are lower than the immunity test levels indicated in the standard and the distance from the electromagnetic source is greater than the distance used by the manufacturer during the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) tests (typically 30 cm), the risk for the worker may be considered acceptable. However, if the measured values exceed the immunity test levels or the distance criteria, a specific evaluation based on a case-by-case analysis is required.

Pattern clustering method of magnetic near‐field radiation emissions based on DBSCAN algorithm

AbstractThe analysis of magnetic near‐field radiation emissions (MNRE) has recently raised more attention in device‐level electromagnetic compatibility testing. Pattern clustering of MNRE for integrated circuits manually is very time‐consuming because of the multi‐dimensional characteristics of MNRE, such as frequency, spatial position, emission intensity, etc. This paper proposes a novel pattern clustering method of MNRE, including strong emission frequency extraction, feature extraction, and density‐based clustering. Ring oscillator and five working states are designed on a Field Programmable Gate Array with 256 Ball Grid Array package, which are used to create a complex multi‐source emission case for verifying the effectiveness of the clustering method. The verification results show that the proposed method can correctly cluster the multi‐source emission patterns. Further, the method is also applied to a Microcontroller Unit with unknown operating states; the results show that the proposed method also can effectively distinguish the unknown emission patterns and locate the unknown interference source. The accuracy of the interference source location is proven by 3D X‐ray microscope inspection.

Deep learning method for predicting electromagnetic emission spectrum of aerospace equipment

AbstractThis paper proposes a deep learning method to predict the electromagnetic emission spectrum in the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test of aerospace products. A threshold‐based data decomposition method is used to propose the spike signal, reconstruct the original test data, and solve the contradiction between the overfitting and prediction accuracy of the deep learning method to deal with the EMC test spectrum. Using a long short‐term memory neural network architecture for predicting electromagnetic emission spectrum, the Bayesian optimization method is used to optimize the network hyperparameter, and the acquisition function is introduced into the loss function to improve the comprehensive training optimization of deep learning network. Apply the method to three numerical examples: signal line current conduction emission, power line voltage conduction emission, and electric field radiation emission. The analysis results indicate that at a 95% confidence level, the predicted electromagnetic emission spectrum is basically consistent with the test results. The prediction results can be used as the basis for EMC evaluation of aerospace electronic equipment.

A modular and scalable system for electromagnetic compatibility testing of integrated circuits

To bring automotive integrated circuits (ICs) to market, manufacturers must subject their products to numerous electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests such as electromagnetic immunity and emission tests, or electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests. These tests need EMC test boards that meet the requirements of the specific standards. However, the current need to increase the frequency range of EMC tests poses a challenge in designing standard-compliant test boards. In this paper, we address this issue by introducing a modular and reusable IC level EMC test system. We demonstrate the system’s effectiveness with an example of two frequently used and conducted EMC tests: the direct power injection (DPI) immunity test and the 150Ω\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$150\\,\\mathrm{\\Omega}$$\\end{document} electromagnetic emission measurement. The two test setups are constructed and validated using the presented modules. It is shown how the frequency range can be expanded while minimizing costs and design efforts for the EMC test board design.

Influence of the IC power supply and decoupling capacitor arrangement on the electromagnetic emission

With the advancing development of integrated circuits (ICs), more and more complex functions and higher performance levels can nowadays directly be integrated into a single IC package. In this context, the issue of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is becoming more critical, as the higher the integration density, the higher the electromagnetic emissions tend to be. In this paper, an EMC test IC is used to investigate the influence of different power supply pinouts (arrangement of VDD and GND pins in center and corner configuration) on the electromagnetic emission of the IC. This is done on the basis of the surface-scanning technique described in the IEC 61967‑3 standard for characterizing the magnetic near field at the surface of the IC package, and on the basis of the 150 Ohm measurement method described in IEC 61967‑4 for determining the conducted interference emissions at the power supply pinout of the IC. Both measurement methods show a significant difference in electromagnetic emissions due to the dependence on the arrangement of the power supply pinouts. These results highlight the importance of careful power supply design in the development of electromagnetically compatible ICs.

Investigation and Analysis of Electromagnetic Interference for PWM Encoder of Urban Rail Train

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an important factor in ensuring the safe operation of the sensitive electronic equipment on urban rail trains. The pulse width modulation (PWM) encoder of an urban rail train exported from China to Brazil is sometimes affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI), which causes the train to fail to run properly. To solve this problem, the EMC test is performed on the PWM encoder to identify the coupling path and the type of interference source. The EMI coupling model and the vehicle-catenary-rail model are established by using an electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) to analyze the mechanism of interference coupling. It is shown that the unbalanced voltage of the train body caused by the backflow of the grounding current is the root cause of the interference of the PWM encoder. The maximum voltage coupled to the internal port of the PWM encoder is about 1894 V, which is sufficient to burn out the encoder. A measure to suppress the interference by installing thyristor surge suppressors (TSS) P0300SC is proposed, which effectively solves the EMI problem of the PWM encoder.

Study of Conducted Emission Characteristics Induction Stoves on 9 kHz-30 MHz Frequency

The presence of increasingly sophisticated and innovative cooking utensils such as induction cookers has changed the way of cooking by providing a high level of efficiency. Induction cookers are also a breakthrough in reducing carbon emissions and making them an important choice in energy conservation efforts. The use of induction stoves in the community still faces several obstacles such as relatively high prices, significant power consumption, and the need for special cooking containers. In addition, the development of induction stove technology can produce electromagnetic emissions in the form of conduction emissions. Conducted emission is electromagnetic interference caused by electronic devices through conductors which can be interpreted as noise currents that propagate on the conduction path and have the potential to interfere with other electronic equipment through voltage sources. In the same power grid, conducted emissions caused by induction stoves can also interfere with data signals using Power Line Carrier (PLC) at a frequency of 30-500 kHz. This study aims to understand and identify patterns of electromagnetic wave emission, namely conduction emissions produced by induction stoves. The main focus is on conducted emissions, which can affect the performance of such electronic devices. The results of research related to the characteristics of the conducted emission value of this induction stove are expected so that this household device is safer and more comfortable to use by the community and can provide a reference for the further development of induction stove technology. The test method was carried out on 4 (four) brands of induction stoves C, A, M and P under various operating conditions and cooking modes both individually and simultaneously in the frequency range of 9 KHz-30 MHz through Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing. The measured parameter is a Quasi Peak (QP) value, in accordance with CISPR standard 14.1:2020. Based on measurements in the frequency range of 9 kHz-30 MHz, individual conditions were obtained that some of the induction stoves used in this study were above the threshold values required in CISPR 14.1:2020. Based on measurements with the condition that the induction stove is operated simultaneously, the level of conducted emission decreases and there is a disturbance at a new frequency beyond the disturbance frequency at individual conditions.

Assessment of a Functional Electromagnetic Compatibility Analysis of Near-Body Medical Devices Subject to Electromagnetic Field Perturbation

This article aims to assess, discuss and analyze the disturbances caused by electromagnetic field (EMF) noise of medical devices used near living tissues, as well as the corresponding functional control via the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of these devices. These are minimally invasive and non-ionizing devices allowing various healthcare actions involving monitoring, assistance, diagnoses and image-guided medical interventions. Following an introduction of the main items of the paper, the different imaging methodologies are conferred, accounting for their nature, functioning, employment condition and patient comfort and safety. Then the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) components and their fields, the consequential MRI-compatibility concept and possible image artifacts are detailed and analyzed. Next, the MRI-assisted robotic treatments, the possible robotic external matter introductions in the MRI scaffold, the features of MRI-compatible materials and the conformity control of such compatibility are analyzed and conferred. Afterward, the embedded, wearable and detachable medical devices, their EMF perturbation control and their necessary protection via shielding technologies are presented and analyzed. Then, the EMC control procedure, the EMF governing equations and the body numerical virtual models are conferred and reviewed. A qualitative methodology, case study and simple example illustrating the mentioned methodology are presented. The last section of the paper discusses potential details and expansions of the different notions conferred in the paper, in the perspective of monitoring the disturbances due to EMF noise of medical devices working near living tissues. This contribution highlights the possibility of the proper functioning of medical instruments working close to the patient’s body tissues and their protection by monitoring possible disturbances. Thanks to these commitments, various health recommendations have been taken into account. This concerns piezoelectric actuated robotics, assisted with MRI and the possible use of conductive materials in this imager under certain conditions. The safe use of onboard devices with EMF-insensitive or intelligently shielded materials with short exposure intervals is also of concern. Additionally, the need to monitor body temperature in case of prolonged exposure of onboard devices to EMF is analyzed in the Discussion section. Moreover, the use of virtual tissue models in EMC testing to achieve more realistic evaluation capabilities also features in the Discussion section.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Method and Application of Generators Based on Flexible Loading System

As an important part of the extended-range new-energy vehicle, the electromagnetic compatibility of the generator system will affect the overall performance of the vehicle. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct electromagnetic compatibility testing on the generator system, which includes two parts: electromagnetic emission and electromagnetic immunity. By implementing EMC testing of generators based on flexible loading equipment, we simulate the working state of the generator system during the real vehicle operation in the 3m anechoic chamber and evaluate the electromagnetic compatibility performance of the generator system. Flexible loading equipment can solve the adverse effects of large engine system volume, high noise, and exhaust emissions on the anechoic chamber environment in extended-range new-energy vehicles, and obtain real-time testing information of the generator system, achieving the standard requirements of quantifiable and evaluable test results.

Effect of direct voltage induction by low-frequency security systems on neurostimulator lead.

Low-frequency (LF) security systems, such as antitheft electronic article surveillance (EAS) gates emit strong magnetic fields that could potentially interfere with neurostimulator operation. Some patients reported pain and shocking sensations near EAS gates, even after they turned off their pulse generator. To investigate the direct voltage induction of EAS systems on neurostimulator leads, we evaluated voltages induced by two EAS systems (14 kHz continuous wave or 58 kHz pulsed) on a 40 cm sacral neurostimulator lead formed in a circular loop attached to a pulse generator that was turned off. The lead and neurostimulator were mounted in a saline-filled rectangular phantom placed within electromagnetic fields emitted by EAS systems. The measured voltage waveforms were applied to computational models of spinal nerve axons to predict whether these voltages may evoke action potentials. Additional in vitro testing was performed on the semicircular lead geometry, to study the effect of lead geometry on EAS induced voltages. While standard neurostimulator testing per ISO 14708-3:2017 recommends electromagnetic compatibility testing with LF magnetic fields for induction of malfunctions of the active electronic circuitry while generating intended stimulating pulses, our results show that close to the EAS antenna frames, the induced voltage on the lead could be strong enough to evoke action potentials, even with the pulse generator turned off. This work suggests that patient reports of pain and shocking sensations when near EAS systems could also be correlated with the direct EAS-induced voltage on neurostimulator lead.

A Novel Statistical Analysis Algorithm for Angular Sampling for Measurement of the TRP of Spurious Emissions

The total radiated power (TRP) has been stipulated as the spurious emission limit for a mmWave terminal. Angular sampling is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of the measurement of the TRP of spurious emissions while improving measurement efficiency. In this study, we investigate the sampling requirements for different TRP measurement methods. A novel algorithm based on the statistical analysis of the measurement uncertainty caused by the sampling step is proposed. Specifically, the HPBW of the entire machine radiation pattern is considered instead of that of a simple antenna array. This study was conducted in strict compliance with regulatory requirements to ensure that the statistical algorithm was more closely aligned with practical testing. Based on this, the maximum sampling steps allowed by different terminal models while maintaining measurement accuracy were analyzed. The simulation results demonstrate that negligible measurement uncertainty was produced when the sampling step of the full spherical grid method was less than 6∘. However, for the two-cut and the three-cut methods, a maximum of 2 dB of measurement uncertainty should be considered. These findings are valuable inputs for the ongoing work on electromagnetic compatibility testing and standardization.

Evaluation the results of electromagnetic compatibility of a prototype device for ear stimulation in patients with tinnitus.

<b><br>Aim:</b> The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of electromagnetic compatibility of a prototype device for ear stimulation in patients with tinnitus.</br> <b><br>Material and methods:</b> The electromagnetic compatibility tests of the prototype device for electro- and magnetostimulation of the hearing organ were carried out at the Center for Attestation and Certification Tests OBAC Sp. z o. o. in Gliwice in 2020. The following product standards were used: PN-EN 60601-1-2:2015-11 - medical electrical equipment (general requirements for basic safety and essential functioning; PN-EN 55011:2012 - industrial, scientific and medical equipment [characteristics of radio frequency disturbances] ) PN-EN 61000-3-2:2014-10 - electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), permissible levels of harmonic current emissions (phase load current ≤ 16 A).</br> <b><br>Results:</b> The level of expanded uncertainty in the measurement of conducted disturbances in the range of 0.150-30MHz does not exceed the level specified in the PN-EN-55016-4-2:2011 standard. In the study of the emission of radiated disturbances up to 1GHz in the frequency range of 30-1000MHz (PN-EN 55011:2012 standard), it was found that the setting of the EUT during the tests was in accordance with the requirements of the standard. The level of expanded uncertainty in the measurement of radiated disturbances in the 30-1000MHz range does not exceed the level specified in the PN-EN 55016-4-2:2011 standard. The measured current harmonic levels (phase power supply current ≤16A) with a frequency range of 50Hz-2kHz do not exceed the permissible levels specified in the PN-EN 61000-3-2:2014-10 standard. The test of resistance to the magnetic field at the frequency of the power grid (PN-EN 61000-4-8: 2010 standard also showed that the setting of the EUT during the tests was in accordance with the requirements of the standard and the result was positive.</br> <b><br>Conclusions:</b> Testing of immunity to radiated radio frequency electromagnetic field (PN-EN 61000-4-3:2007 +A1:2008+A2:2011 standard) and testing of resistance to magnetic field at power frequency (PN-EN 61000-4-8 standard :2010) did not exceed the level specified in the standard and showed a positive result. The measured harmonic levels of the network current (phase supply current ≤16A) with the frequency range 50Hz-2kHz do not exceed the permissible levels specified in the PN-EN 61000- 3-2:2014-10 standard for a class A device.</br&gt.

Analysis and Verification of Airborne Instrument Electromagnetic Emission Test

Electromagnetic compatibility is an important factor affecting aircraft performance and safety. With the increase in the number and type of airborne electronic equipment, the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of airborne equipment are increasingly high [1]. Taking airborne equipment as an example, this paper introduces in detail the problem locating method and rectification method of GJB151A standard CE102 and RE102 test exceeding the standard. It analyzes and summarizes the improper design and installation of EMI filters leading to tests exceeding the standard and gives the interference suppression method. Finally, the correctness of the method is verified by the EMC test.

An Improved Calculation Method of Coil Offset on the Large-Caliber Magnetic Field Immunity Testing System for ITER

The magnetic field immunity testing system is important equipment for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), which is mainly used for electromagnetic compatibility tests in strong magnetic field environments. The test system is mainly composed of coil structure. In this paper, the influence of coil offset on the magnetic field performance of the system is studied. There are 18 degrees of freedom offsets of position and angle on the X, Y and Z axes of the coil, and different offsets have different effects on the magnetic field performance. The different offset combinations of a single coil and two coils are discussed, and various distributions of magnetic field performance are calculated. Then, according to the law, the calculation method is improved, and a reasonable and effective method is selected to calculate the maximum allowable offset of simultaneous position and angle migration under the premise of extremely many variables. In the paper, the influence of spatial multi degree of freedom coil offset error on magnetic field uniformity is studied, the relationship between multivariable allowable offset and magnetic field error accuracy is analyzed, and the allowable offset under different installation errors is determined. This provides a theoretical basis for actual installation.
