A Pathway on 5G EMC Testing: A Tutorial

The fifth-generation wireless system (5G) is becoming more present in today's reality. Understanding the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements is critical for preparing future device designs to conform to the upcoming standards. This article provides an overview of EMC's role in the certification process and provides an updated standardization guide, comparing emissions and immunity tests of the latest 3GPP/ETSI and ITU recommendations. We discuss the test methodologies and challenges when setting up EMC test facilities, especially for OTA at the FR2 band. We also provide an example of equipment selection as a guide for 5G 3GPP RF conformance tests for User Equipment (UE) and Base Station (BS). Finally, thinking about the future, we dive into the next-generation wireless communication world to provide insights on how 6G technology advancements would impact EMC.

Electric Field Uniformity Characteristic of a Reverberation Chamber with a Composite QRD

This paper presents the electric field characteristics in a reverberation chamber which is an electromagnetic compatibility test facility that uses a stirrer to generate a uniform electric field inside it. In this paper, a diffuser is introduced from acoustics and newly designed to overcome problems of a stirrer. To validate the effect of a diffuser, a composite quadratic residue diffuser and a reverberation chamber are modeled. Then, the field uniformity inside the reverberation chamber is simulated by XFDTD 6.2 simulation program. Simulation results show that the electric field uniformity in the reverberation chamber satisfies the international standard requirement. This shows that the composite quadratic residue diffuser can be substituted for a stirrer.

Phase stirring of electromagnetic field to test the susceptibility of electronic equipment at lower frequencies

To guarantee the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electronic equipment, their susceptibility to electromagnetic fields has to be quantified and compared to standardized immunity limits. The equipment's susceptibility is quantified by immersing it in an electromagnetic field of a known magnitude. The field magnitude is progressively increased until the equipment functioning is disturbed. However, the equipment's susceptibility also depends on the perturbation field polarization. Consequently, rigorous EMC tests require the analysis of different coupling configurations between the equipment under test (EUT) and the perturbation field. Knowing that the polarization of the field is predetermined by the test configuration, the EUT must be successively placed in different orientations inside the EMC test facilities. This paper studies the possibility of generating, in the lower frequencies, electromagnetic fields of variable polarization in order to test an EUT according to different field polarizations without moving it. The principle is studied in a three-dimensional TEM cell which is a variant of multi-plate TEM cells. The method consists of simultaneously feeding several strip lines of the cell to obtain a resultant electromagnetic field of variable polarization over time. The objective being to test the immunity of equipment independently of orientation, the control of the field magnitude is discussed.

EMC for Telecommunication Networks

This paper presents an overview of the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) for telecommunication networks. It starts with an introduction to EMC and some of the EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) related problems. Areas of relevance to a telecommunication operator are Identified. These included activities to be carried out in the area of adoption of standards, adoption of standards in procurement specifications, EMC test facilities, installation practices and need for organisational support. A review on the current status of standardisation activities for telecommunication networks is also presented.

GIOTTO Takes Shape

Comprehensive electrical and electromagnetic tests have been successfully completed on the full‐scale electrical engineering version of the GIOTTO spacecraft in the Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Facility at British Aerospace Dynamics Group at Bristol. GIOTTO will intercept Halley's Comet when it approaches the ecliptic plane of Earth in 1986.
