High Gain Compact Antenna-in-Package Solution Using Like Mushroom Electromagnetic Band Gap for Industrial, Scientific, and Medical Band

Abstract A single-feed circularly polarized antenna with electromagnetic band gap (EBG) has been developed for the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands. The proposed antenna features a square patch with eight slits on each side and corner, along with a cross-slot in the middle. To prevent surface wave excitation caused by the patch antenna's thick substrate, new grounded like-mushroom EBG structures will surround the antenna. The frequency band gap characteristics of the EBG unit cells have been optimized at 5.8 GHz. A row of EBGs squares is 4.73 mm (0.063λo) away from the antenna square patch and surrounds it on all four sides. The proposed mushroom-like structure design improves the antenna's directivity by 43.31%, gain by 32.93%, reflection coefficient by 93%, and radiation efficiency by 35.22%. This topology enables a wide variety of wireless communications applications. Computer simulation technologies (CSTs) were used to generate simulation figures for the proposed antenna, operating at 5.8 GHz. Furthermore, the new Like-Mushroom EBG antenna simulation, experimental results, and other reported works confirm that our approach meets the studied objectives regarding polarization purity, radiation efficiency, high directivity, and gain.

Single Band EBG Antenna for Wireless Power Transfer Applications

This work demonstrates the design of a single band Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) antenna by employing an open stub EBG microstrip of a patch antenna for better achievements in terms of its performance to be utilized in a reconfigurable harvester to operate over a wide input power range. The EBG antenna has been used to gather RF energy and a FET-transistor has been obtainable to determine and control the power flow with the intention to operate at the same time for a different level of input power. The measured data of the EBG antenna shows a directivity of 8.52 dBi, a gain of 7.18 dBi, a return loss of −27 dB with a radiation efficiency of 84.3%, showing a clear enhancement in directivity, peak realized gain, and radiation efficiency by 41.76%, 25.61%, and 17.12% respectively compared with a regular reference antenna; without utilized the EBG structure. Moreover, the harvester design accomplishes 40% of RF-DC power conversion efficiency over a wide dynamic input power range from −15 to 27 dBm, and its peak is around 78%. The harvester is designed to work at the ISM band for 915 MHz and is suitable for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) uses.

On the input impedance of probe‐fed electromagnetic bandgap antennas based on lattice modes

The impedance of a coaxial probe, feeding an Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) structure conceived for radiation shaping, is studied from the theoretical and numerical viewpoints. The EBG medium is a square arrangement of dielectric cylinders placed in a parallel-plate waveguide, where a suitable lattice mode is excited. A semi-analytical model is developed and used to derive an approximate, closed-form expression of the probe resistance. The model is based on a modal expansion in Floquet harmonics, on which a current distribution is projected according to the Lorentz reciprocity theorem to derive the amplitude of lattice modes propagating right above the bandgap along lattice axes. The dependence of probe impedance on lattice parameters is then investigated with the numerical simulations of a finite-element method, which is also used to validate the developed model. A broad set of parametric analyses is presented, showing that the reactive part weakly depends on probe position, cylinder radius and permittivity, while the heights of probe and parallel-plate waveguide play a major role in determining the resonance condition. As to the probe resistance, it decreases with cylinder radius and permittivity and decreases with probe and waveguide heights. The derived analytical formula correctly reproduces such functional dependences and its calculation is immediate, revealing its usefulness in antenna design. Matching issues are heuristically and experimentally approached by examples, demonstrating that the proposed work can be effectively employed to improve the electrical performance of EBG antennas with an embedded source.

Performance Analysis of Wearable Dual-Band Patch Antenna Based on EBG and SRR Surfaces.

This paper presents the performance comparison of a dual-band conventional antenna with a split-ring resonator (SRR)- and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG)-based dual-band design operating at 2.4 GHz and 5.4 GHz. The compactness and dual-frequency operation in the legacy Wi-Fi range of this design make it highly favorable for wearable sensor network-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Considering the current need for wearable antennas, wash cotton (with a relative permittivity of 1.51) is used as a substrate material for both conventional and metamaterial-based antennas. The radiation characteristics of the conventional antenna are compared with the EBG and SRR ground planes-based antennas in terms of return loss, gain, and efficiency. It is found that the SRR-based antenna is more efficient in terms of gain and surface wave suppression as well as more compact in comparison with its two counterparts. The compared results are found to be based on two distinct frequency ranges, namely, 2.4 GHz and 5.4 GHz. The suggested SRR-based antenna exhibits improved performance at 5.4 GHz, with gains of 7.39 dbi, bandwidths of 374 MHz, total efficiencies of 64.7%, and HPBWs of 43.2 degrees. The measurements made in bent condition are 6.22 db, 313 MHz, 52.45%, and 22.3 degrees, respectively. The three considered antennas (conventional, EBG-based, and SRR-based) are designed with a compact size to be well-suited for biomedical sensors, and specific absorption rate (SAR) analysis is performed to ensure user safety. In addition, the performance of the proposed antenna under bending conditions is also considered to present a realistic approach for a practical antenna design.

Performance Enhancement of mm-Wave Phased Arrays for Mobile Terminals Through Grounded Coplanar Waveguide Feeding Networks With via Fences

This paper presents a design methodology focused on feeding networks that can improve the insertion loss and coverage efficiencies of millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) phased arrays in mobile terminals. This enhancement is accomplished by using a grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) transmission line (TL) withviafences fabricated on single-layer FR-4 PCB. The exemplified 8-element phased arrays incorporating a compact one-dimensional electromagnetic bandgap (1-D EBG) antenna are fed through a 1 × 8 T-junction power divider, which includes the predetermined phased delay lines. To achieve high radiation performance with minimum leakage power or spurious waves in the T-junction power divider, an island-shape GCPW TL topology withviafences featuring high-impedance surfaces (HIS) is devised and fabricated. For further investigation on the radiation performance and spherical coverage of the mm-Wave mobile antenna, a mobile device prototype equipped with two sets of the 8-element phased arrays is prepared and studied. Through extensive simulation and experimental studies, it can be ascertained that the proposed GCPW TL topology withviafences can improve the realized gain at a coverage efficiency of 50% by more than 3 dB, between 26 and 36 GHz.

Analysis and Development of an Efficient Cross-Slot Loaded Compact Electromagnetic Band Gap Antenna

This paper is devoted to a novel Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) single-feed circularly polarized microstrip EBG antenna with compact size proposed for C-Band applications. The antenna structure will include eight slits introduced at the boundary and the corners in the radiating square patch with a cross-slot at the center. The provided study will effectively approve the various proposed structures and interest occupied by these types of antennas in the enhancement of output parameters (gain, directivity, radiation efficiency, and bandwidth) without much affecting the operating bandwidth at C-band. At first, the concept and the realization of a directive and circularly polarized antenna using an electromagnetic band gap material whose circular polarization is generated by the structure itself is discussed. The analysis and simulation results are presented for an antenna operating at 6.1 GHz using computer Simulation Technologies (CST). Furthermore, the new compact circular polarized EBG antenna, compared to experimental results, will confirm the pre-studied goal of these kinds of antennas such as radiation efficiency, polarization purity, radiation efficiency, high directivity, and gain.

Integrated design of large and medium‐sized low profile frequency reconfigurable antenna array

In this paper, in order to solve the limitations of conventional technology schemes, a new scheme for large and medium-sized frequency reconfigurable antenna array (FRAA) with low profile is proposed by combining advanced technologies such as new electromagnetic materials, reconfigurable antenna and integrated design. The proposed FRAA operating in X and Ku bands consists of a 4 × 4 antenna array, a w ide-band feed network, a dual-band electromagnetic band gap (EBG) plate and integrated bias network. The distance between antenna array and reflective plate has been reduced by 80.0% by applying an EBG structure. The influence of bias network on antenna performance is effectively reduced, and the performance of X/Ku two-band antenna is ensured through the integrated optimization design of the bias network, EBG reflector plate and antenna array. Both simulation and test results show that the proposed FRAA has good performance.

High Gain Patch Antenna using EBG Structures for WiMAX Application

One of the ways to achieve high gain in microstrip antennas is by using electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures. Incorporating EBG in the design supresses surface waves in the antenna ground plane and also helps in obtaining a uniform field distribution. The main objective of this paper is to obtain a high gain antenna suitable for WiMAX application by simply placing multiple EBG structures on the same plane of patch antenna. A simple microstrip patch antenna with and without EBG structures is designed and simulated using AnsoftHFSSTMsoftware with FR4 substrate having a dielectric constant of 4.4, loss tangent of 0.02 and thickness of 1.57mm at a resonating frequency of 5.6 GHz. The proposed EBG antenna increased the gain by approximately two times when compared with a simple micro-strip patch antenna.

Design and Analysis of EBG Antenna for Wi-Fi, LTE, and WLAN Applications

A non-planar electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structured antenna is proposed in this paper for wireless communication applications. The proposed design consists of coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed square patch antenna embedded with triangular EBG backing on FR-4 substrate material for 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi, LTE) and 5.2 GHz (WLAN) applications. Gain is improved from 2.8 dB to 13.9 dB by adding EBG structure in the proposed antenna and the parametric analysis is done for optimizing the antenna performance characteristics. The proposed antenna provides a maximum efficiency of 82.5% in the resonating frequencies. The prototyped antenna is having good correlation with the simulation results obtained from Finite Element Method (FEM) based Anyss-HFSS. High Frequency Structure Simulator is used to analyze the antenna parameters and the simulated and measured results are correlating well with each other with a slight change in frequencies.

New electromagnetic band gap antenna for multiple ultra wide band applications

This paper presents a compact multiband microstrip electromagnetic band gap (EBG) patch antenna with partial ground used for the 2nd and 3rd mode excitation, allowing multiple band resonance and control of the resonance frequencies. The electromagnetic band gap elements are inserted to improve obviously output parameters (gain directivity, return loss, maximum radiation Intensity, and radiation efficiency). Simulation and measurement results show a multiband antenna WiMAX, WLAN-band applications that can effectively cover three separated bandwidths (2.12, 3.1 and 5.41 GHz). The proposed compact antenna is grounded on a 1.6 mm-thick FR4 epoxy substrate with overall dimension of 0.305λ × 0.305λ × 0.012λ at lower frequency. The whole size of the proposed antenna with an overall area of 25 × 38 × 1.6 mm3 is maintained, and a low cross-polarization level within the operating frequency range. Electromagnetic Band Gap materials, artificially engineered structures, have the main role to improve the output performance of the patch antennas.

Changing the Operation of Small Geometrically Complex EBG-Based Antennas With Micron-Sized Particles That Respond to Magneto-Static Fields

As the usage of wireless technology grows, there are evermore demands on the antennas that support these platforms. This need has led to the design of unique antennas with improved bandwidth, agile frequency capabilities, compact size and greater efficiencies. In part though, the trade-off for such capabilities is antenna complexity. This paper presents a new technique for simplifying the method of changing the operation of a printed antenna using micron-sized silver coated particles that respond to magneto-static fields. More specifically, a structure consisting of a low-loss dielectric material with a cylindrical cavity containing micro-sized particles is developed. The overall size of the dielectric material is 1.5 mm $\times 1.5$ mm $\times 0.5$ mm and the cavity has a diameter of 0.9 mm. Furthermore, the top and bottom of the cavity with the micron-sized particles is capped with copper foil. Then, to manipulate the enclosed particles, a static magnet is placed near the structure. The enclosed particles columnize and orientate in the direction of the field-lines, connecting the top and bottom copper foil plates. To disconnect the plates then, the field is simply removed and the columns collapse. Macroscopically, the structure has the behavior of a switch. The structures presented in this work are denoted as Magneto-static Field Responsive Structures (MRSs). The MRSs have an additional benefit of not requiring a direct connection to a biasing circuit. This is very useful because there are many antenna designs that make it difficult to embed biasing circuitry to reconfigure printed antennas using MEMS and PIN diodes, for example. Finally, a new frequency reconfigurable Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) antenna is presented. This design is unique because the complex layout does not allow for traditional biasing circuitry and the operation is changed using the new MRSs presented in this paper.

Small-Size Wide-Band Low-Profile “Pixel Antenna”: Comparison of Theoretical and Experimental Results in L Band

This paper presents a small (≈λ/2 × λ/2) low-profile (λ/10) planar antenna built to work on a very large frequency band (≥40%) for applications in Telecom, Radar, IoT, etc. This antenna is called a “Pixel Antenna” because it was first used as a pixel in an agile beam radiating surface. In this paper, the pixel antenna is used alone to design multiband or wide-band antennas keeping the same radiation pattern and polarization throughout the band. The working principle used to design the Pixel Antenna is deduced from the well-known EBG (electromagnetic band gap) antenna in its low-profile version which already has a bandwidth close to ≈20%. The aim of this present work is to double this bandwidth by simultaneously feeding two modes of the original EBG material. The theoretical and experimental results are compared for an L band application, exhibiting bandwidth from 1 GHz to 1.52 GHz (41%). In addition, good radiation patterns of pixel antenna stay constant over the entire useful band without any degradation of the antenna performance. This proposed antenna design can be used to obtain wide bandwidth for any chosen frequency band (S band, X band, C band, etc.) using frequency scaling.

Radiation control of microstrip patch antenna by using electromagnetic band gap

In this paper, two compact electromagnetic band gap (EBG) antennas are proposed by combining a rectangular antenna with a mushroom-like EBG structure and with a novel triple side-slotted EBG (TSSEBG). Both prototype antennas can scan the main beam in the elevation (E) (−20° < φ < 20°), (−17° < φ < 17°) and horizontal (H) (−18° < θ < 18°), (−15° < θ < 15°) planes, respectively. The main beam scanning was conducted by using band-stop and band-pass properties. The band-stop property was achieved by connecting the vias to the ground plane of the antenna, whereas the band-pass property was realized by disconnecting the same vias, thereby yielding the beam steering into the pass-band sector. Unlike usual beam steering, this technique does not suffer from gain degradation, and the gain of the main lobe is approximately stable for the steering angles. The antenna performance was enhanced due to suppress surface waves. Moreover, the number of vias was reduced significantly in the proposed TSSEBG instead of the mushroom-like EBG. The compact EBG and TSSEBG antennas have directivity (10 and 10.5) dBi, gain (9.86 and 10.16) dB, and efficiencies of 96.5% and 93%, respectively, with the operating frequency at 6 GHz.

Pattern reconfigurable metasurface to improve characteristics of low profile antenna parameters

This article proposes a mushroom-shaped electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure for the antenna parameter enhancement of low profile antennas in 5 to 15 GHz regime. Three different type antennas including a dipole antenna, a loop antenna, and a monopole antenna are designed for the corresponding operation band, and a 8 × 8 mushroom type EBG structure is designed to obtain exotic behavior for the enhancement of antenna parameters. Bandwidth, return loss (S11), main lobe gain, directivity, side lobe level, front to back ratio, and angular width of each antenna with EBG structure is examined with details. Besides, the designed EBG structure and antennas are fabricated and experimental results are obtained to support numerical ones. In addition, future study of the proposed EBG structure such as microwave imaging in cavity resonators is specified and discussed.

CP Antenna Array With Switching-Beam Capability Using Electromagnetic Periodic Structures for 5G Applications

This paper proposes a novel circularly polarized electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) antenna array backed by an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) that operates in the 26-32-GHz bands. The designed antenna is a 2 x 2 Yagi-Uda antenna array that uses the directors' semicircles to direct the radiation in the horizontal end-fire direction. The feeding of the array is designed with two parallel T-junction portions forming a parallel feeding network that converts the polarization from linear to circular. An AMC is placed underneath the antenna to suppress the backward radiation and obtain the propagation only in the +z plane. The novel approach is based on the fact that EBGs are placed around the array to give to the antenna, beamswitching capability. This simple technique provides a high beam tilting angle of +90° from the end-fire to the full broadside plane. The final EBG-AMC-antenna array is circularly polarized and presents, at 29 GHz, a gain of 11.9 dBi, and an axial ratio bandwidth of 10% from 28 to 31 GHz. By assessing the high antenna performances presented in this paper, and the high angle beam-switching capability by adding the EBG, the novel array could be seen as a potential candidate for implementation in future 5G applications.

Modeling of an electromagnetic bandgap antenna

An equivalent circuit is developed for an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) antenna that can provide a mathematically simple means for calculating the antenna's input impedance. The model predicts a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 0.42 GHz which is validated against simulated and measured values of 0.50 GHz and 0.51 GHz, respectively.

Design of defective electromagnetic band-gap structures for use in dual-band patch antennas

Generally, the surface wave of an antenna can be suppressed by integrating the electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures. However, to achieve this effect, the EBG cells must be reasonably designed, otherwise it may lead to performance degradation instead. In this article, a dual-band pinwheel-shaped slot EBG structure is proposed. When applied to a patch antenna, defects are introduced into 3 rows of the EBG unit cells. The proposed antenna, incorporating EBGs designed with structural defects, to radiate at 4.9 and 5.4 GHz is simulated and tested. The measured results show that the −10-dB bandwidth of the proposed EBG antenna is extended by 41% and 25.4% at low frequency and high frequency, respectively. In addition, the peak gain of the proposed EBG antenna is increased by 2.44 dB at 4.9 GHz and 2.86 dB at 5.4 GHz with >40% efficiency. When compared with the periodic EBG antenna, this antenna is more effective. Thus, these experimental results show that the performance of the EBG antenna can be improved by interrupting the periodicity of the EBGs structures.

Design of EBG antenna with multi-sources excitation for high directivity applications

In this paper, an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) resonator antenna with multi-sources excitation is proposed. The objective is to broaden the radiation bandwidth and the directivity of the EBG antenna. The directivity is increased by 13dB using EBG resonator compared to the conventional patch antenna case; a value of 20dB is obtained. The multi-sources excitation was considered to moderate the problem of the low radiation bandwidth of the antenna. By means of the multi-source excitation device (16 patches are used to effect excitation of the EBG resonator), the directivity is increased by by 1.38% compared to that the mono-source excitation, and the lateral lobes were reduced by 5dB.

A Systematic Analysis and Design of a High Gain Microstrip Antenna based on a Single EBG Layer

In this paper, an Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) lens of a single layer is invented to improve the gain of a truncated slotted square patch antenna for the Wi-Fi applications. The proposed EBG lens is structured from 55 planar array. The individual unit cell is basically shaped as a couple of a split concave conductive patch. The proposed EBG struc- ture performance is tested numerically using Finite Integration Technique (FIT) formulations of CSTMWS and analytically using circuit theory. Then, the antenna performance in terms of |S11|, the boresight gain, and radiation patterns are reported and compared to the performance before introducing the EBG lens to identify the significant enhancements. The proposed EBG antenna is simulated numerically inside FIT formulations of CSTMWS time domain (TD) solver. A significant gain enhancement of 11.1 dBi at 2.45 GHz and a front to back ratio (F/B) about 22 dB are achieved after introducing the EBG lens. The antenna performance is validated using a frequency domain (FD) solver based CSTMWS formulations to obtain excellent agreements between the two invoked methods.
