Reactivity and Stability of Reduced Ir-Weight TiO2-Supported Oxygen Evolution Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Water Electrolyzer Anodes.

Reducing the iridium demand in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEM WE) is a critical priority for the green hydrogen industry. This study reports the discovery of a TiO2-supported Ir@IrO(OH)x core-shell nanoparticle catalyst with reduced Ir content, which exhibits superior catalytic performance for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) compared to a commercial reference. The TiO2-supported Ir@IrO(OH)x core-shell nanoparticle configuration significantly enhances the OER Ir mass activity from 8 to approximately 150 A gIr-1 at 1.53 VRHE while reducing the iridium packing density from 1.6 to below 0.77 gIr cm-3. These advancements allow for viable anode layer thicknesses with lower Ir loading, reducing iridium utilization at 70% LHV from 0.42 to 0.075 gIr kW-1 compared to commercial IrO2/TiO2. The identification of the Ir@IrO(OH)x/TiO2 OER catalyst resulted from extensive HAADF-EDX microscopic analysis, operando XAS, and online ICP-MS analysis of 30-80 wt % Ir/TiO2 materials. These analyses established correlations among Ir weight loading, electrode electrical conductivity, electrochemical stability, and Ir mass-based OER activity. The activated Ir@IrO(OH)x/TiO2 catalyst-support system demonstrated an exceptionally stable morphology of supported core-shell particles, suggesting strong catalyst-support interactions (CSIs) between nanoparticles and crystalline oxide facets. Operando XAS analysis revealed the reversible evolution of significantly contracted Ir-O bond motifs with enhanced covalent character, conducive to the formation of catalytically active electrophilic OI- ligand species. These findings indicate that atomic Ir surface dissolution generates Ir lattice vacancies, facilitating the emergence of electrophilic OI- species under OER conditions, while CSIs promote the reversible contraction of Ir-O distances, reforming electrophilic OI- and enhancing both catalytic activity and stability.

Stabilization of High‐Valent Molecular Cobalt Sites through Oxidized Phosphorus in Reduced Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

AbstractHeterogeneous molecular cobalt (Co) sites represent one type of classical catalytic sites for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solutions. There are dynamic equilibriums between Co2+, Co3+ and Co4+ states coupling with OH−/H+ interaction before and during the OER event. Since the emergence of Co2+ sites is detrimental to the OER cycle, the stabilization of high‐valent Co sites to shift away from the equilibrium becomes critical and is proposed as a new strategy to enhance OER. Herein, phosphorus (P) atoms were doped into reduced graphene oxide to link molecular Co2+ acetylacetonate toward synthesizing a novel heterogeneous molecular catalyst. By increasing the oxidation states of P heteroatoms, the linked Co sites were spontaneously oxidized from 2+ to 3+ states in a KOH solution through OH− ions coupling at an open circuit condition. With excluding the Co2+ sites, the as‐derived Co sites with 3+ initial states exhibited intrinsically high OER activity, validating the effectiveness of the strategy of stabilizing high valence Co sites.

Electronic Synergistic Effects on the Stability and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Efficiency of the Mesoporous LiMn2-xMxO4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) Electrodes.

Stable porous manganese oxide-based electrodes are essential for clean energy generation and storage because of their high natural abundance and health safety. This investigation focuses on mesoporous LiMn2-xMxO4 (where M is Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu and x is 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.67) electrodes and thin/thick films. The mesoporous electrodes and films are fabricated by coating clear and homogeneous ethanol solutions of the salts (LiNO3, [Mn(OH2)4](NO3)2, and [M(OH2)x](NO3)2) and surfactants (P123 and CTAB) and calcining at elevated temperature (denoted as F-LiMn2-xMxO4, G-LiMn2-xMxO4, and meso-LiMn2-xMxO4, respectively). The electrochemical properties, stability, and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of the F/G-LiMn2-xMxO4 electrodes are investigated in alkaline media using a three electrode setup. The F-LiMn1.33M0.67O4 electrodes (where M is Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) exhibit low Tafel slopes of 60, 43, 44, and 32 mV/dec, respectively. While all the Mn-rich and F-LiMn2-xFexO4 electrodes degrade via Mn(VI) disproportionation reaction, the 33% Co electrode shows high stability during the OER. The nickel-based electrodes are stable with as little as 15% Ni and display excellent OER performance over 25% Ni, albeit undergoing a transformation that accumulates Ni(OH)2 species on the electrode surface. Copper in the F-LiMn2-xCuxO4 electrodes is homogeneous at low Cu percentages but forms a CuO phase above 15% Cu, undergoes degradation, and displays a weak OER performance. In short, Co and Ni stabilize the F-LiMn1.33Co0.67O4 and F-LiMn1.7Ni0.3O4 electrodes, which display excellent OER performance.

AbstractChemical modification via functional dopants in carbon materials holds great promise for elevating catalytic activity and stability. To gain comprehensive insights into the pivotal mechanisms and establish structure‐performance relationships, especially concerning the roles of dopants, remains a pressing need. Herein, we employ computational simulations to unravel the catalytic function of heteroatoms in the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), focusing on a physical model of high‐electronegative F and N co‐doped carbon matrix. Theoretical and experimental findings elucidate that the enhanced activity originates from the F and pyridinic‐N (Py−N) species that achieve carbon activation. This activated carbon significantly lowers the conversion energy barrier from O* to OOH*, shifts the potential‐limiting step from OOH* formation to O* generation, and ultimately optimizes the energy barrier of the potential‐limiting step. This wok elucidates that the critical role of heteroatoms in catalyzing the reaction and unlocks the potential of carbon materials for acidic OER.

Exploring the Effect of Ball Milling on the Physicochemical Properties and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of Nickel and Cobalt Oxides

Ball milling is commonly used to reduce catalyst particle size. However, little attention is paid to further changes that ball milling can cause to the rest of the catalysts’ physicochemical properties, which can impact their intrinsic catalytic activity. The effect of ball milling on the physicochemical properties of NiCoO2, NiO, CoO, and NiO:CoO mixtures is reported and correlated with their electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. It is also shown that particle fragmentation is an inherent consequence of ball milling, but some oxides can also experience a phase transformation. In the case of rocksalt‐structured CoO, it is partially or entirely transformed to spinel‐structured Co3O4. Additionally, NiCo2O4 with a spinel structure can be formed by ball milling NiO and CoO simultaneously (both rocksalt structures), but only in the absence of water. The changes impact the electrochemical activity of the initial oxides. Ball milled NiCoO2 exhibits the highest activity with a mean potential of 1.563 V at 10 mA cm−2, demonstrating the advantage of having Ni and Co in the same structure. Although NiCo2O4 is also a binary oxide, the results indicate that its metal coordination environment makes it intrinsically less active than NiCoO2 for the OER in alkaline media.

Fe/FeCo-based metal-organic framework nanosheet/ nanoparticle directly grown on nickel foam as a stable electrode for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are selective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) owing to their high specific surface area, rich pore structure, and so on. Herein, a series of Fe/FeCo-based MOFs were developed over nickel foam (NH2-MIL-101-Fe@NF/NH2-MIL-101-(CoFe)@NF-X) employing a facile process. An overpotential of 376 mV was observed at 100 mA cm−2 for Fe-MOF. The structural modification with the addition of Co for FeCo-MOFs can improve the morphology as well as the electrochemical performance. Among of them, NH2-MIL-101-(CoFe)@NF-2 illuminates an excellent overpotential 329 mV with a small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec−1 at 100 mA cm−2. Its surface roughness facilitates the deep penetration of electrolyte to the internal structure of the electrode. Theoretical calculations confirmed the introduction of Co can reduce the overpotential from 0.68 V to 0.34 V at the rate-determining step (from O∗ to OOH∗). This is a key feature that promotes the electrochemical performance of OER catalysts.

Reconstruction of Ferromagnetic/Paramagnetic Cobalt‐Based Electrocatalysts under Gradient Magnetic Fields for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

AbstractThe rational manipulation of the surface reconstruction of catalysts is a key factor in achieving highly efficient water oxidation, but it is a challenge due to the complex reaction conditions. Herein, we introduce a novel in situ reconstruction strategy under a gradient magnetic field to form highly catalytically active species on the surface of ferromagnetic/paramagnetic CoFe2O4@CoBDC core–shell structure for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We demonstrate that the Kelvin force from the cores’ local gradient magnetic field modulates the shells’ surface reconstruction, leading to a higher proportion of Co2+ as active sites. These Co sites with optimized electronic configuration exhibit more favorable adsorption energy for oxygen‐containing intermediates and lower the activation energy of the overall catalytic reaction. As a result, a significant enhancement in OER performance is achieved with a large current density increment about 128 % at 1.63 V and an overpotential reduction by 28 mV at 10 mA cm−2 after reconstruction. Interestingly, after removing the external magnetic field, the activity could persist for over 100 h. This work showcases the directional surface reconstruction of catalysts under a gradient magnetic field for enhanced water oxidation.

Unveiling the Dynamic Evolution of Catalytic Sites in N-Doped Leaf-like Carbon Frames Embedded with Co Particles for Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries.

The advancement of cost-effective, high-performance catalysts for both electrochemical oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) is crucial for the widespread implementation of metal-air batteries. In this research, we fabricated leaf-like N-doped carbon frames embedded with Co nanoparticles by pyrolyzing a ZIF-L/carbon nanofiber (ZIF-L/CNF) composite. Consequently, the optimized ZIF-L/CNF-700 catalyst exhibit exceptional catalytic activities in both ORRs and OERs, comparable to the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C and RuO2. Addressing the issue of diminished cycle performance in the Zn-air battery cycle process, further detailed investigations into the post-electrolytic composition reveal that both the carbon framework and Co nanoparticles undergo partial oxidation during both OERs and ORRs. Owing to the varying local pH on the catalyst surface due to the consumption and generation of OH- by OERs and ORRs, after OERs, the product is reduced-size Co particles, while after ORRs, the product is outer-layer Co(OH)2-enveloping Co particles.

Deliberate Amorphization of Co-MOF for Constructing Crystalline-Amorphous Heterostructures Toward High-Performance Water Electrolysis.

The endowment of metal organic frameworks (MOF) with superior electrocatalytic performance without compromising their structural/compositional superiorities is of great significance for the development of renewable energy devices, yet remains a grand challenge. Herein, a deliberate partial amorphization strategy is developed to construct a heterostructured electrocatalyst consisting of crystalline Co-MOF and amorphous Co-S nanoflake arrays aligned on the carbon cloth (CC) substrate (abbreviated as Co-MOF/Co-S@CC hereafter) through a rapid sulfuration method. The simultaneous implement of crystalline-amorphous (c-a) heterostructure and nanoflake arrayed architecture on CC substrate renders the Co-MOF/Co-S@CC with abundant and tight active sites, accelerated charge transfer rate, regulated electronic structures, and reinforced structural stability. As such, the obtained Co-MOF/Co-S@CC electrode demonstrates outstanding electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances with the overpotentials of 64 and 217mV at 10mA cm-2, respectively. Moreover, a two-electrode electrolyzer assembled by Co-MOF/Co-S@CC electrodes exhibits the lower cell voltages and larger current densities than those of Pt/C and RuO2 counterparts, excellent reversibility and prominent long-term stability, representing a great prospect for feasible H2 production. This adopted concept of c-a heterostructure for electronic regulation may bring about insightful inspiration for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for sustainable energy systems.

A core-shell structured catalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution: NiFe double hydroxide coating over phosphorus -modified NiMoO4 nanorod cores

In this paper, we innovatively employed low-temperature phosphorization technology to successfully incorporate P doping into NiMoO4 nanorods. Subsequently, utilizing the electrodeposition method with a solution rich in Ni²⁺ and Fe³⁺ as the electrolyte, we delicately tuned the process to identify the optimal deposition time, achieving a uniform coating of NiFe LDH on the surface of the P-doped NiMoO4 nanorods. This led to the construction of a three-dimensional core-shell structured NiFe LDH@P-NiMoO4 composite material. To validate the performance of this composite, we conducted thorough structural characterization and electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance tests. The experimental results revealed that in a 1 M KOH electrolyte environment, when the current density reached 100 mA cm⁻², the composite exhibited exceptionally superior OER performance, with an overpotential of merely 267 mV and a Tafel slope as low as 93 mV dec⁻¹, firmly demonstrating its remarkable catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, the composite displayed good stability and durability during prolonged testing, providing a solid foundation for its practical application. In summary, this work not only paves a new way for the preparation of high-performance non-precious metal OER electrocatalysts but also provides robust support for the realization of efficient and stable energy conversion and storage technologies.

Engineering spin-dependent catalysts: chiral covalent organic frameworks with tunable electroactivity for electrochemical oxygen evolution.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect offers promising prospects for spintronics, yet designing chiral materials that enable efficient spin-polarized electron transport remains challenging. Here, we report the utility of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in manipulating electron spin for spin-dependent catalysis via CISS. This enables us to design and synthesize three three-dimensional chiral COFs (CCOFs) with tunable electroactivity and spin-electron conductivity through imine condensations of enantiopure 1,1'-binaphthol-derived tetraaldehyde and tetraamines derived from 1,4-benzenediamine, pyrene, or tetrathiafulvalene skeletons. The CISS effect of CCOFs is verified by magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy. Compared with their achiral analogs, these CCOFs serve as efficient spin filters, reducing the overpotential of oxygen evolution and improving the Tafel slope. Particularly, the diarylamine-based CCOF showed a low overpotential of 430mV (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) at 10mAcm-2 with long-term stability comparable to the commercial RuO2. This enhanced spin-dependent OER activity stems from its excellent redox-activity, good electron conductivity and effective suppression effect on the formation of H2O2 byproducts.

Breaking the Bottleneck of Activity and Stability of RuO2-Based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution.

Electrochemical acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important part for water electrolysis utilizing a proton exchange membrane (PEM) apparatus for industrial H2 production. RuO2 has garnered considerable attention as a potential acidic OER electrocatalyst. However, the overoxidation of Ru active sites under high potential conditions is usually harmful for activity and stability, thereby posing a challenge for large-scale commercialization, which needs effective strategies to circumvent the leaching of Ru and further activate Ru sites. Herein, a Mini-Review is presented to summarize the recent developments regarding the activation and stabilization of the Ru active sites and lattice oxygen through the modulation of the d-band center, coordination environment, bridged heteroatoms, and vacancy engineering, as well as structural protection strategies and reaction pathway optimization to promote the acidic OER activity and stability of RuO2-based electrocatalysts. This Mini-Review offers a profound understanding of the design of RuO2-based electrocatalysts with greatly enhanced acidic OER performances.

Hierarchical Nanostructures of Iron Phthalocyanine Nanowires Coated on Nickel Foam as Catalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

In this paper, iron phthalocyanine nanowires on a nickel foam (FePc@NF) composite catalyst were prepared by a facile solvothermal approach. The catalyst showed good electrochemical oxygen evolution performance. In 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, 289 mV low overpotential and 49.9 mV dec-1 Tafel slope were seen at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The excellent electrochemical performance comes from the homogeneous dispersion of phthalocyanine nanostructures on the surface of the nickel foam, which avoids the common agglomeration problem of such catalysts and provides a large number of active sites for the OER reaction, thus improving the catalytic performance of the system.

Recent advantages on mass transfer structure construction in transition metal‐based cost‐effective catalyst toward alkaline oxygen evolution

The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be combined with various reactions to fabricate electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices while the slow kinetics and poor mass transfer capability at high current densities were the key constraints to its large‐scale application. Therefore, this review primarily focuses on design and optimization of mass transfer structures of TM‐metal‐based OER catalysts. Nanostructuring, porous design, and the creation of hierarchical architectures have been applied during catalyst synthesis to enhance the surface area and accessibility, thereby improving mass transfer and catalytic OER efficiency. Strategies including doping, substrate invitation, soft/hard templating has been utilized to accelerate mass transfer as well as the ion/electron conduction efficiency for the overall improvement of OER performance of the catalysts. These developments underline the critical role of advanced material design in achieving high‐performance OER catalysts and highlight the potential of TM‐based materials in cost‐effective and scalable applications.

Electrocatalytic micro-environment regulation of ZIF-67 with broadened pore structure and unsaturated coordination sites for oxygen evolution reaction

The atomically precise mental nanoclusters have been widely explored in catalysis. However, the easy aggregation of clusters limits their application. The porous structure of metal-organic framework can prevent the aggregation and growth of clusters. In this work, a copper-phosphine complex: Cu2(dppm)2(PF6)2 (Cu2) was synthesized by one-pot method and then reacted with hydrogen sulfide to obtain a tetranuclear copper cluster: Cu4(S)(dppm)4(PF6)2 (Cu4). The two copper clusters were successfully introduced into Zeolitic imidazole frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) to form Cu2-ZIF-67 and Cu4-ZIF-67. It found that after the introduction of Cu cluster, the pore size of ZIF-67 was increased leading to more exposed Co2+ and more unsaturated coordination mental sites, which is beneficial for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The OER ability of pure ZIF-67 was enhanced after the introduction of Cu2 and Cu4 clusters, in which Cu4-ZIF-67 displayed the best electrochemical performance. At 10 mA cm−2, it requires an overpotential of 340 mV. The lower Tafel slope and smaller charge transfer resistance reflect its faster dynamic process. This work provides a new idea for the development of OER electrocatalysts.

Surface reconstruction of defect-engineered MIL-88@Fe2O3 p-n heterojunction for enhanced electrocatalytic water and urea oxidation

Defective p-n heterojunction engineering has been under the spotlighted as a promising strategy for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Still, it remains a great challenge how to use the space-charge region of p-n heterojunction to study the regulation mechanism of the p-n heterogeneous interface and vacancy defects on the incomplete self-reconstruction from pristine materials to (oxy)hydroxides. Herein, NH2-MIL-88b(Fe)/α-Fe2O3 p-n heterojunction with rich oxygen vacancies (denoted as p-n MIL-88@Fe2O3-OV) has been prepared using a simple one-step solvothermal method. The prepared catalyst exhibits promising electrocatalytic performance for OER and UOR, requiring low potentials of 1.50 and 1.35 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, respectively. The combined in-situ/ex-situ experimental and theoretical investigations unveil that p-n heterojunction engineering can not only facilitate charge transfer from n-type α-Fe2O3 to p-type NH2-MIL-88b(Fe) (denoted as MIL-88) and generate abundant oxygen vacancies, but also appreciably trigger phase transformation of MIL-88 into active FeOOH. The reconstructed FeOOH/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction optimizes the bonding strength towards key oxygen-containing intermediates and boosts the intrinsic activity. This work provides new insight into the self-reconstruction effect in the p-n heterojunction for enhancing the OER and UOR catalytic activity.
