Influence of Spring Precipitation over Maritime Continent and Western North Pacific on the Evolution and Prediction of El Niño–Southern Oscillation

Previous studies suggested that spring precipitation over the tropical western Pacific Ocean can influence the development of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). To identify crucial precipitation patterns for post-spring ENSO evolution, a singular value decomposition (SVD) method was applied to spring precipitation and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, and three precipitation and ENSO types were obtained with each highlighting precipitation over the Maritime Continent (MC) or western north Pacific (WNP). High MC spring precipitation corresponds to the slow decay of a multi-year La Niña event. Low MC spring precipitation is associated with a rapid El Niño-to-La Niña transition. High WNP spring precipitation is related to positive north Pacific meridional mode and induces the El Niño initiation. Among the three ENSO types, ocean current and heat content behave differently. Based on these spring precipitation and oceanic factors, a statistical model was established aimed at predicting winter ENSO state. Compared to a full dynamical model, this model exhibits higher prediction skills in the winter ENSO phase and amplitude for the period of 1980–2022. The explained total variance of the winter Niño-3.4 index increases from 43% to 75%, while the root-mean-squared error decreases from 0.82 °C to 0.53 °C. The practical utility and limitations of this model are also discussed.

Arctic sea ice-air interactions weaken El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over the tropical Pacific can affect Arctic climate, but whether it can be influenced by the Arctic is unclear. Using model simulations, we show that Arctic sea ice-air interactions weaken ENSO by about 12 to 17%. The northern North Pacific Ocean warms due to increased absorption of solar radiation under such interactions. The warming excites an anomalous tropospheric Rossby wave propagating equatorward into the tropical Pacific to strengthen cross-equator winds and deepen the thermocline. These mean changes dampen ENSO amplitude via weakened thermocline and zonal advective feedbacks. Observed historical changes from 1921-1960 (with strong sea ice-air interactions) to 1971-2000 (with weak interactions) are qualitatively consistent with the model results. Our findings suggest that Arctic sea ice-air interactions affect both the mean state and variability in the tropical Pacific, and imply increased ENSO amplitude as Arctic sea ice and its interactions with the atmosphere diminish under anthropogenic warming.

Strengthened ENSO Amplitude Contributed to Regime Shift in the Hadley Circulation

AbstractUnderstanding the variability in the Hadley circulation (HC) changes is crucial for understanding ocean‐atmosphere interactions. In this study, the variability in the boreal winter HC in the last 4 decades is explored using multiple reanalyzes and model simulations. The results show that regime shift occurred in the leading mode of HC variability. The primary mode of the recent HC is dominated by an equatorially symmetrical pattern, which was considered the second mode in previous studies. The regime shift in HC variability is mainly due to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which explains both the spatiotemporal variation and formation of HC variability. Moreover, the abilities of the models to reproduce HC variability is subject to their ability to simulate ENSO variability, suggesting that the ENSO has become a more important modulator of the HC variability in recent decades, and additional research is warranted to evaluate future climate changes and potential effects on the HC.

Variation in the Impact of ENSO on the Western Pacific Pattern Influenced by ENSO Amplitude in CMIP6 Simulations

AbstractThe Western Pacific pattern (WP) is one of the most consequential atmospheric teleconnections during boreal winter, as it profoundly influences weather extremes and climate variability across Eurasia and North America. The El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is suggested to be a crucial external forcing of WP variability. In this study, we meticulously evaluated the capability of 56 coupled climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6th phase (CMIP6) in replicating the winter ENSO‐WP connection. Our results reveal notable diversities in the portrayal of the winter ENSO‐WP relation across CMIP6 models. This model diversity in the ENSO‐WP connections primarily stems from the spread of the models' simulated ENSO amplitude. Specifically, models with enhanced ENSO amplitudes exhibit intensified sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the equatorial central‐eastern Pacific. This enhancement of SST anomalies faciliates stronger atmospheric convective anomalies, especially in the extratropical eastern Pacific and the tropical western North Pacific. Of particular note is the intensified atmospheric convective anomalies in the tropical western North Pacific, which exert a pivotal role in shaping the WP through initiating a distinct atmospheric teleconnection pattern.

Impact of convection scheme on ENSO prediction of SINTEX-F2

A spectral cumulus parameterization (spectral scheme) is implemented in Scale Interaction Experiment Frontier version 2 (SINTEX-F2) seasonal prediction system, and the impact on the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction is examined. By conducting hindcast experiments using the original convection scheme (Tiedtke scheme) and the spectral scheme, and comparing the ENSO prediction skill, the impact of the spectral scheme is analyzed in detail. It was found that prediction skill in terms of ENSO phase and the sea surface temperature (SST) persistence were improved by using the spectral scheme, but the root-mean-square error (RMSE) increased. The ENSO feedback was also changed by changing the convection scheme. The original scheme failed to predict the zonal wind stress anomaly toward the Niño 3.4 region, whereas the spectral scheme simulated it over the equatorial eastern Pacific with narrowing the meridional width, indicating that the spectral scheme strengthened the ENSO feedback. The spectral scheme also improved zonal-vertical atmospheric response to the Niño 3.4 index due to its advantageous features. Analysis of the ENSO feedback terms revealed that strengthened forcing in the eastern Pacific improved the thermocline feedback of ENSO, as its reversed timing of positive and negative tendencies for the mixed layer temperature matched that estimated from the reanalysis data. In conclusion, the spectral scheme can improve ENSO prediction through the atmospheric forcing and mean state in the eastern Pacific which impacted the ocean properties. It improved the phase error by improving thermocline feedback, but did not improve the RMSE. Tuning of the original scheme to obtain additional improvements to ENSO prediction would be difficult, since it requires modification of detailed convective cloud properties to correct the phase error. The spectral scheme tends to overestimate the ENSO amplitude, i.e., large RMSE, but this drawback can be mitigated by tuning the convection scheme so that it suppresses the warm SST climate drift, and this is considered the more promising method to further improve ENSO prediction.

Seasonally Alternate Roles of the North Pacific Oscillation and the South Pacific Oscillation in Tropical Pacific Zonal Wind and ENSO

Abstract The western-central equatorial Pacific (WCEP) zonal wind affects El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) by involving a series of multiscale air–sea interactions. Its interannual variation contributes the most to ENSO amplitude. Thus, understanding the predictability of the WCEP interannual wind is of great importance for better predictions of ENSO. Here, we show that the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the South Pacific Oscillation (SPO) alternate in fueling this interannual wind from late boreal winter to austral winter in the presence of background trade winds in different hemispheres. During the boreal winter–spring, the NPO registers footprints in the tropics by benefiting from the Pacific meridional mode and modulating the northwestern Pacific intertropical convergence zone (NITCZ). However, as austral winter approaches, the SPO takes over the role of the NPO in maintaining the anomalous NITCZ. Moreover, the interannual wind is further driven to the east in the positive phase of the SPO, by intensified central-eastern equatorial Pacific convection resulting from tropical–extratropical heat flux adjustments. A reconstructed WCEP interannual wind index involving only the NPO and the SPO possesses a long lead time for ENSO prediction of nearly one year. These two extratropical boosters enhance the viability of equatorial Pacific zonal wind anomalies associated with the large growth rate of ENSO, and the one in the winter hemisphere seems to be more efficient in forcing the tropics. Our result further indicates that the NPO benefits a long-lead prediction of the WCEP interannual wind and ENSO, while the SPO is the dominant extratropical predictor of ENSO amplitude. Significance Statement ENSO is closely linked to the interannual variability of equatorial Pacific zonal wind, and ENSO prediction is impeded by the weak predictability of the wind. We have found that the North Pacific Oscillation and the South Pacific Oscillation take turns in affecting the interannual variability of the zonal wind from the late boreal winter to austral winter, and the winter hemisphere extratropical booster is more efficient in modulating tropical convection and the associated surface winds. An estimated zonal wind index constructed by the two extratropical precursors possesses a long lead time for ENSO prediction. Our result provides useful information for better predicting ENSO by further considering winter hemisphere extratropical climate variability.

Interdecadal Variability of the Meridional Wind across the Eastern Equatorial Pacific and Its Relationship with ENSO

Abstract The interdecadal variability of cross-equatorial meridional winds in the eastern Pacific (VEP), which has been shown to correlate with the amplitude of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the interdecadal time scale, is investigated using long-term observations and 22 models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Both observations and models exhibit a tight negative correlation between interannual variations of VEP and ENSO, and this relationship is synchronized with the interdecadal variability of VEP. In long-term observations, ENSO amplitude modulation is still seen to be out-of-phase with interdecadal variability of VEP. This relationship, however, is substantially underestimated among CMIP6 models, particularly in the historical simulations. The interdecadal variability of VEP is associated with both the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) in observations. However, most CMIP6 preindustrial control (PI-control) experiments have no link between the VEP and AMO. In contrast, in historical simulations, the multimodel mean of interdecadal VEP shows a significant fluctuation with AMO around the 1980s, which might be caused by the anthropogenic aerosol forcing. Consequently, the interdecadal variation of the AMO–VEP relationship is likely a response to external forcing while the IPO–VEP relationship is mainly modulated by internal climate variability. Another plausible factor causing the weak AMO–VEP relationship in PI-control runs is the unrealistic relationship between modeled SSTs in the tropical Pacific and North Atlantic. Furthermore, model biases in the tropical Pacific may account for the weak relationship between interdecadal VEP and ENSO amplitude in CMIP6 models.

Persistent effect of El Niño on global economic growth.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shapes extreme weather globally, causing myriad socioeconomic impacts, but whether economies recover from ENSO events and how anthropogenic changes to ENSO will affect the global economy are unknown. Here we show that El Niño persistently reduces country-level economic growth; we attribute $4.1 trillion and $5.7 trillion in global income losses to the 1982-83 and 1997-98 El Niño events, respectively. In an emissions scenario consistent with current mitigation pledges, increased ENSO amplitude and teleconnections from warming are projected to cause $84 trillion in 21st-century economic losses, but these effects are shaped by stochastic variation in the sequence of El Niño and La Niña events. Our results highlight the sensitivity of the economy to climate variability independent of warming and the potential for future losses due to anthropogenic intensification of such variability.

Impact of the Deep Chlorophyll Maximum in the Equatorial Pacific as Revealed in a Coupled Ocean GCM‐Ecosystem Model

AbstractA coupled ocean general circulation model (OGCM)‐ocean ecosystem model is used to investigate the effects of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) on the ocean state in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Climatological and interannual three‐dimensional (3‐D) chlorophyll (CHL) fields are captured well in control runs using the coupled ocean physics‐ecosystem model forced by prescribed atmospheric fields. Further sensitivity experiments are performed to assess the effects of 3‐D CHL structure using the OGCM with the prescribed CHL fields taken from the control runs: CHLclim and are runs in which climatological DCM effect is included or only surface CHL effect is included; CHLinter and are runs with interannually varying DCM effects included or not. The differences in the simulated ocean conditions are analyzed to explore DCM effects on sea surface temperature (SST) and amplitude of El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Two competing mechanisms responsible for the DCM effects are revealed: an ocean biology‐induced direct heating (OBH) effect, and an indirect cooling effect due to dynamic processes associated with vertical mixing and shallow meridional overturning circulation. There are three major findings: (a) DCM acts to reduce mean SST by around 0.2°C in the eastern equatorial Pacific, being larger than the surface CHL effects. (b) DCM interannual variability increases the ENSO amplitude to a comparable degree as the surface CHL effects. (c) The total net impact of vertical mixing, currents, and net surface heat flux makes SST drop more under the DCM effect than the surface CHL effect in the eastern Pacific. These findings provide a new insight into the feedback mechanisms for the bioclimate interactions.

Sources of Inter‐Model Diversity in the Strength of the Relationship Between the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation

AbstractUsing 51 models of the AMIP and historical experiments of CMIP6, we investigate the inter‐model diversity of atmospheric and coupled models in the strength of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR)–El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) relationship. In atmospheric models, the Walker Circulation (WC) intensity associated with the western Pacific convective activity is most responsible for the inter‐model diversity. Models with strong WC have a strong ISMR–ENSO relationship via enhancing ENSO‐induced anomalies of the WC and monsoon circulation. The secondary source is the monsoon circulation differences associated with meridional rainfall contrast over the Indian monsoon region. In coupled models, the primary (secondary) source is the ENSO amplitude (WC intensity). In observation, the decadal variation of WC can also explain the changes in the ISMR–ENSO relationship. This study provides a basis for improving the model performance and advances our understanding of the observed ISMR–ENSO relationship changes.

Pacific shoreline erosion and accretion patterns controlled by El Niño/Southern Oscillation

In the Pacific Basin, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the dominant mode of interannual climate variability, driving substantial changes in oceanographic forcing and impacting Pacific coastlines. Yet, how sandy coasts respond to these basin-scale changes has to date been limited to a few long-term beach monitoring sites, predominantly on developed coasts. Here we use 38 years of Landsat imagery to map shoreline variability around the Pacific Rim and identify coherent patterns of beach erosion and accretion controlled by ENSO. On the basis of more than 83,000 beach transects covering 8,300 km of sandy coastline, we find that approximately one-third of all transects experience significant erosion during El Niño phases. The Eastern Pacific is particularly vulnerable to widespread erosion, most notably during the large 1997/1998 El Niño event. By contrast, La Niña events coincide with significant accretion for approximately one-quarter of all transects, although substantial erosion is observed in southeast Australia and other localized regions. The observed regional variability in the coastal response to ENSO has important implications for coastal planning and adaptation measures across the Pacific, particularly in light of projected future changes in ENSO amplitude and flavour. The El Niño/Southern Oscillation drives coherent patterns of beach erosion and accretion around the Pacific Rim, according to analysis of satellite imagery covering over 8,300 km of sandy coastline.

Changes in ENSO Characteristics in Model Simulations with Considerably Altered Background Climate States

Abstract Changes in the background climate are known to affect El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) by altering feedbacks that control ENSO’s characteristics. Here, the sensitivity of ENSO variability to the background climate is investigated by utilizing two Community Earth System Model, version 1 (CESM1), simulations in which the solar constant is altered by ±25 W m−2. The resulting stable warm and cold climate mean state simulations differ in terms of ENSO amplitude, frequency, diversity, asymmetry, and seasonality. In the warm run, ENSO reveals a larger amplitude and occurs at higher frequencies relative to the cold and control runs as well as observations. The warm run also features more eastern Pacific El Niños, an increased asymmetry, and a stronger seasonal phase locking. These changes are linked to changes in the mean state via the amplifying and damping feedbacks. In the warm run, a shallower mean thermocline results in a stronger subsurface–surface coupling, whereas the cold run reveals reduced ENSO variability due to a reduced Bjerknes feedback in accordance with a deeper mean thermocline and enhanced surface wind stress. A strong zonal advective and upwelling feedback further contribute to the large ENSO amplitude in the run with a warmer mean state. In the cold run, ENSO events are partly forced by anomalous shortwave radiation. However, in light of the large temperature contrast between the simulations of up to 6 K in the tropical Pacific, the relatively small changes in ENSO variability highlight the robustness of ENSO dynamics under vastly different climate mean states.

ENSO coupling to the equatorial Atlantic: Analysis with an extended improved recharge oscillator model

IntroductionObservational and modeling studies have examined the interactions between El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the equatorial Atlantic variability as incorporated into the classical charge-recharge oscillator model of ENSO. These studies included the role of the Atlantic in the predictability of ENSO but assumed stationarity in the relationships, i.e., that models’ coefficients do not change over time. A recent work by the authors has challenged the stationarity assumption in the ENSO framework but without considering the equatorial Atlantic influence on ENSO.MethodsThe present paper addresses the changing relationship between ENSO and the Atlantic El Niño using an extended version of the recharge oscillator model. The classical two-variable model of ENSO is extended by adding a linear coupling on the SST anomalies in the equatorial Atlantic. The model’s coefficients are computed for different periods. This calculation is done using two methods to fit the model to the data: (1) the traditional method (ReOsc), and (2) a novel method (ReOsc+) based on fitting the Fisher’s Z transform of the auto and cross-correlation functions.ResultsWe show that, during the 20th century, the characteristic damping rate of the SST and thermocline depth anomalies in the Pacific have decreased in time by a factor of 2 and 3, respectively. Moreover, the damping time of the ENSO fluctuations has doubled from 10 to 20 months, and the oscillation period of ENSO has decreased from 60-70 months before the 1960s to 50 months afterward. These two changes have contributed to enhancing ENSO amplitude. The results also show that correlations between ENSO and the Atlantic SST strengthened after the 70s and the way in which the impact of the equatorial Atlantic is added to the internal ENSO variability.ConclusionsThe remote effects of the equatorial Atlantic on ENSO must be considered in studies of ENSO dynamics and predictability during specific time-periods. Our results provide further insight into the evolution of the ENSO dynamics and its coupling to the equatorial Atlantic, as well as an improved tool to study the coupling of climatic and ecological variables.

ENSO–IOD Inter‐Basin Connection Is Controlled by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

AbstractThe interactions between El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are known to have great implications for global climate variability and seasonal climate predictions. Observational analysis suggests that the ENSO–IOD inter‐basin connection is time‐varying and related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) with weakened ENSO–IOD relationship corresponding to AMO warm phases. A suite of Atlantic pacemaker simulations successfully reproduces the decadal fluctuations in ENSO–IOD relationship and its link to the AMO. The warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the AMO drive a series of Indo‐Pacific mean climate changes through tropical‐wide teleconnections, including the La Niña‐like mean SST cooling over the central Pacific and the deepening of mean thermocline depth in the eastern Indian Ocean. By modulating ocean–atmosphere feedback strength, those mean state changes decrease both ENSO amplitude and the Indian Ocean sensitivity to ENSO forcing, therefore decoupling the IOD from ENSO.

The Essential Role of Westerly Wind Bursts in ENSO Dynamics and Extreme Events Quantified in Model “Wind Stress Shaving” Experiments

Abstract Westerly wind bursts (WWBs)—brief but strong westerly wind anomalies in the equatorial Pacific—are believed to play an important role in El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) dynamics, but quantifying their effects is challenging. Here, we investigate the cumulative effects of WWBs on ENSO characteristics, including the occurrence of extreme El Niño events, via modified coupled model experiments within Community Earth System Model (CESM1) in which we progressively reduce the impacts of wind stress anomalies associated with model-generated WWBs. In these “wind stress shaving” experiments we limit momentum transfer from the atmosphere to the ocean above a preset threshold, thus “shaving off” wind bursts. To reduce the tropical Pacific mean state drift, both westerly and easterly wind bursts are removed, although the changes are dominated by WWB reduction. As we impose progressively stronger thresholds, both ENSO amplitude and the frequency of extreme El Niño decrease, and ENSO becomes less asymmetric. The warming center of El Niño shifts westward, indicating less frequent and weaker eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño events. Removing most wind burst–related wind stress anomalies reduces ENSO mean amplitude by 22%. The essential role of WWBs in the development of extreme El Niño events is highlighted by the suppressed eastward migration of the western Pacific warm pool and hence a weaker Bjerknes feedback under wind shaving. Overall, our results reaffirm the importance of WWBs in shaping the characteristics of ENSO and its extreme events and imply that WWB changes with global warming could influence future ENSO.

The Andes Affect ENSO Statistics

Abstract Current coupled global climate models have biases in their simulations of the tropical Pacific mean-state conditions as well as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Specifically, in the Community Earth System Model (CESM version 1.2.2), the tropical Pacific mean state has overly weak sea surface temperature (SST) gradients in both the zonal and meridional directions, ENSO is too strong and too regular, and El Niño and La Niña events are too symmetrical. A previous study with a slab-ocean model showed that a higher elevation of the Andes can improve the tropical Pacific mean-state simulation by adjusting the atmospheric circulation and increasing the east–west and north–south SST gradients. Motivated by the link between the mean tropical Pacific climate and ENSO variations shown in previous studies, here we explored the influence of the Andes on the simulation of ENSO using the CESM 1.2.2 under full atmosphere–ocean coupling. In addition to improving the simulated tropical Pacific mean state by increasing the strength of the surface easterly and cross-equatorial southerly winds, the Higher Andes experiment decreases the amplitude of ENSO, increases the phase asymmetry, and makes ENSO events less regular, resulting in a simulated ENSO that is more consistent with observations. The weaker ENSO cycle is related to stronger damping in the Higher Andes experiment according to an analysis of the Bjerknes index. Our overall results suggest that increasing the height of the Andes reduces biases in the mean state and improves the representation of ENSO in the tropical Pacific.

ENSO atmospheric feedbacks under global warming and their relation to mean-state changes

Two atmospheric feedbacks play an important role in the dynamics of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), namely the amplifying zonal wind feedback and the damping heat flux feedback. Here we investigate how and why both feedbacks change under global warming in climate models participating in the 5th and 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5 and CMIP6) under the business-as-usual scenario (RCP8.5 and SSP5-8.5, respectively). The amplifying zonal wind feedback over the western equatorial Pacific (WEP) becomes significantly stronger in two third of the models, on average by 12 ± 7% in these models. The heat flux damping feedback over the eastern and central equatorial Pacific (EEP and CEP, respectively) increases as well in nearly all models, with the damping effect increasing on average by 18 ± 11%. The simultaneous strengthening of the two feedbacks can be explained by the stronger warming in the EEP relative to the WEP and the off-equatorial regions, which shifts the rising branch of the Pacific Walker Circulation to the east and increases the mean convection over the CEP. This in turn leads to a stronger vertical wind response during ENSO events over the CEP that strengthens both atmospheric feedbacks. We separate the climate models into sub-ensembles with STRONG and WEAK ENSO atmospheric feedbacks, as 2/3 of the models underestimate both feedbacks under present-day conditions by more than 40%, causing an error compensation in the ENSO dynamics. The biased mean state in WEAK in 20C constrains the ENSO atmospheric feedback projection in 21C, as the models of the WEAK sub-ensemble also have weaker ENSO atmospheric feedbacks in 21C. Further, due to the more realistic dynamics and teleconnections, we postulate that one should have more confidence in the ENSO predictions with models belonging to the STRONG sub-ensemble. Finally, we analyze the relation between ENSO amplitude change and ENSO atmospheric feedback change. We find that models simulating an eastward shift of the zonal wind feedback and increasing precipitation over the EEP during Eastern Pacific El Niño events tend to predict a larger ENSO amplitude in response to global warming.

Forced changes in El Niño–Southern Oscillation due to global warming and the associated uncertainties in ACCESS-ESM1.5 large ensembles

Understanding the forced response of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to future global warming (GW) is important for reliable climate projections; however, many important aspects of this response are yet to be fully understood. Here, we use two large ensembles of CMIP6 historical and SSP3-7.0 experiments (each with 40 ensemble members), performed with ACCESS-ESM1.5, to investigate the combined greenhouse gas (GHG) and aerosol forced changes in selected ENSO properties. We document the forced changes in ENSO's amplitude, power spectrum, skewness, and feedbacks and quantify the internal variability associated with these forced changes. There is a modest but statistically significant GW-induced increase in the ensemble-mean ENSO amplitude and a sizable ensemble variation (due to internal variability) with both increases (in 80% of the members) and decreases. To understand the mechanism of this variation, we examine the role of changes in the mean state and atmosphere-ocean coupling processes in the Pacific. We find that the ensemble variation of GW-induced ENSO amplitude change is most sensitive to the zonal wind forcing change. A change in the zonal gradient of mean sea surface temperatures (SSTs) also plays an important role in the ENSO amplitude change, with the changes in the atmospheric Bjerknes feedback and thermocline feedback playing a minor role. The implications and some caveats of these findings are discussed.

Process-Based Analysis of El Niño–Southern Oscillation Decadal Modulation

Abstract Based on two long-term simulations using state-of-the-art coupled global climate models, we examined the physical processes that control the decadal modulation of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude. To identify the contributions of various feedback processes to the ENSO amplitude, we used the Bjerknes stability (BJ) index, which aims to quantify the main ENSO feedbacks from a linear perspective. To start, we demonstrated that the time-varying BJ index is highly correlated with the decadal changes in the standard deviation of the ENSO index, suggesting that it provides a good representation of the decadal modulation of the ENSO amplitude. We further revealed that this phenomenon can be attributed mainly to thermocline feedback changes, particularly changes in the oceanic response to zonal wind stress. In addition, two critical features of the background state were found to contribute significantly to changes in the equatorial thermocline feedback: 1) the subtropical–tropical cells and 2) ocean stratification. It was suggested that weak (strong) background subtropical meridional overturning circulation partly contributes to regulating the narrower (wider) meridional scales of the sea surface temperature and the associated zonal wind stress anomalies. The more stratified the ocean, the stronger ocean responses to a given wind stress forcing, which affects the ENSO amplitude.

Future Southern Ocean warming linked to projected ENSO variability

The Southern Ocean is a primary heat sink that buffers atmospheric warming and has warmed substantially, accounting for an outsized portion of global warming-induced excess heat in the climate system. However, its projected warming is highly uncertain and varies substantially across climate models. Here, using outputs from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six models, we show that Southern Ocean warming during the twenty-first century is linked to the change in amplitude of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Models simulating a larger increase in ENSO amplitude systematically produce a slower Southern Ocean warming; conversely, a smaller increase in ENSO amplitude sees a stronger warming. The asymmetry in amplitude and teleconnection between El Niño and La Niña produce cumulative surface wind anomalies over the southern high latitudes, impacting Southern Ocean heat uptake. The magnitude of inter-model ENSO variations accounts for about 50% of the uncertainty in the projected Southern Ocean warming.
