Ways to overcome the barrier during the transition of asynchronous motors to the energy efficiency class IE5

Purpose. To provide a comprehensive analytical review on ways to increase the energy efficiency of induction motors and identify those suitable for transitioning fixed speed induction motors to IE5 level. Methodology. A thorough study of research and development in the field of increasing the energy efficiency of induction motors for various purposes was conducted. The experience of the development of traction induction motors of electric vehicles as dynamically developing is extrapolated. Results. It was established that the main limiting factor in increasing the energy efficiency of induction motors to the IE5 level is its thermal state. Analysis of ways to improve the efficiency of induction motors indicates the need for their complex application. It is most expedient to optimize and improve the elements of the air-cooling system of induction motors. To carry out the research, it is necessary to comprehensively apply electromagnetic and temperature field modeling systems of induction motors. Given certain shortcomings of thermal models of induction motors, it is necessary to combine modeling with experimental studies using both classical temperature sensors and the method of thermography. Originality. The combination of modern methods of modeling the thermal state of induction motors and experimental studies makes it possible to determine reserves for increasing the efficiency of existing motors. Using these results, it is possible to improve induction motors to the IE5 efficiency level. Practical value. Manufacturers and researchers see difficulties with the transition of induction motors of industrial purpose to the IE5 efficiency level, so they focused their attention on synchronous electric motors. The results of our research prove that, despite certain barriers, this transition can be made, albeit with certain difficulties.

Derating factor determination of the three‐phase induction motor under unbalanced voltage using pumping system

AbstractA novel method is presented for determining the derating factors of a three‐phase induction motor under the condition of the unbalanced supply voltages. In this method, a mechanical system is used which consist of the a centrifugal pump, two valves, a DC motor, which are connected to the shaft of the three‐phase induction motor. A sliding mode control system is used for position control of the DC motor for adjusting the valve angle for derating the induction motor. The authors present the results of an experiment in which a three‐phase induction motor was subjected to various unbalanced voltage conditions. The results of simulations were used to look into what happened when there were different levels of imbalanced voltage. This was done to determine how these situations changed an induction motor's speed, torque, and efficiency. For this system, the stator current would be greater than the rated current if there was an imbalance in the supply voltage. Therefore, to reduce the amount of power that the three‐phase induction motor can produce, the control system uses a DC motor to reduce the angle of one of the two valves. This decreasing angle continues until the root mean square value of the stator current returns to the rated current. At this point, the derating factor may be calculated by dividing the output power of the three‐phase induction motor in the unbalanced condition by the output power when there are ideal sinusoidal. The MATLAB SIMULINK environment is utilised to perform simulations of the proposed system.

Loss Minimization Model Predictive Current Control for Linear Induction Motors

To further improve the operating efficiency of linear induction motor, this paper proposes a loss minimization model predictive current control method based on governable loss online calculation. First, the method derives the equivalent circuit of linear induction motor containing independent iron loss branches, and establishes the loss model containing iron loss. Second, the expressions of stator d‐axis current with governable losses and secondary flux amplitude are derived from theoretical analysis, and then a given value of stator d‐axis current is derived when the governable losses are minimal. Then, a chain observer is designed to observe the secondary flux and calculate the governable loss and stator d‐axis current under the current operation. Finally, a method is proposed to introduce the stator d‐axis current observation results into the model predictive current control, which ensures the loss suppression effect and improves the dynamic performance at the same time. In addition, this article also compares the loss minimization controllers with or without iron loss. The simulation results are consistent with the theory, and the optimal control of the secondary flux of the linear induction motor can be successfully realized, thus effectively reducing the energy loss of the motor in the dynamic operation process. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Increasing efficiency of induction motor

In this work was analyzed induction motor, its advantages and disadvantages, and methods of modify it in way increasing its reliability and power coefficient. Power coefficient is the parameter which shows how much energy is used for yield and which just converting into heat. For analysis used calculation of induction motor which commonly used for developing serial asynchronous motor. Based on that calculation has modulated physical process which conducting in active parts of motor. For calculation of induction in armature and magnetic flux passes in it was used numerical mathematical model. This type of electric motors is common used so increase its efficiency and power characteristics is the one of way to reduce energy consuming. The developed way of modernization of induction motors, and analyzed reliability of it.

A non-intrusive technique for estimating the efficiency of low voltage three-phase induction motors

This paper introduces a non-intrusive technique based on the air–gap torque (AGT) method to estimate the efficiency of induction motors (IMs). The technique uses a 3rd-degree equation to calculate the sum of windage and friction losses (FWL) and rotor stray load losses (SLLr), considering the number of IM poles. IM speed is estimated using motor current signature analysis, and a new procedure to estimate stator resistance is presented. Efficiency is then determined by applying the estimated rotor speed, stator resistance, and the sum of FWL and SLLr in the AGT equations. This method requires only nameplate information, IM line voltages, and currents. Simulations and experimental tests for balanced, unbalanced, and harmonic feeding modes show the proposed technique’s estimated efficiency values are very close to measured values, unlike the AGT method. This demonstrates the proposed technique’s high accuracy, making it suitable for non-intrusive efficiency estimation of in-service IMs in industrial programs.

ANFIS-based optimisation for achieving the maximum torque per ampere in induction motor drive with conventional PI

This research presents an innovative approach to controlling the speed of an induction motor drive by utilizing a combination of neural networks and fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS). The study focuses on computing the rotor's magnetic flux while considering different overshoot and settling criteria for torque and motor speed. The goal is to optimize torque per ampere and generate the necessary torque. The proposed ANFIS-based torque-per-ampere control technique offers a distinctive method applicable to a static induction motor model. This method allows for an increase in stator current while maintaining flexibility and individuality in motor control strategies. It compares various motor vector control methods, specifically focusing on strategies to reduce torque ripple. These strategies include adaptive ANFIS, fuzzy logic control (FLC), and proportional-integral (PI) control. The research highlights the effectiveness of an adaptive ANFIS controller in achieving the most significant reduction in torque ripple within the induction motor system. This proposed problem identification sets the stage for exploring and developing solutions to enhance the performance and efficiency of induction motor drives.

Assessment of the Energy Efficiency of Three-Phase Induction Motors Powered by A Photovoltaic System

This study aims to determine the energy efficiency of three-phase induction motors (TIM) powered when operated with photovoltaic systems (PVS). The environmental advantages of photovoltaic systems (PVS) are very well known. However, there are still challenges related to energy quality, electricity generation instability, failure in frequency regulation, instability in reactive power, and harmonics generation. However, the impact of PVS on TIM efficiency has not been thoroughly explored. This research compares a TIM's electromechanical characteristics and efficiency when powered by a conventional electrical grid versus a PVS. Experimental studies revealed that when powered by the PVS, the TIM experienced increased voltage and higher voltage and current harmonics compared to grid power. These electrical difficulties, attributed to the PVS inverter, resulted in a 2.7% decrease in TIM efficiency compared to grid power. Modeling conducted under actual load variation conditions demonstrated a 2.6% increase in energy consumption when powered by the PVS compared to grid power. Based on these findings, PVS installers are advised to consider the energy quality provided by these systems, as it may affect the efficient operation of TIM, leading to increased energy consumption.

Robust flux angle control of induction motors to improve efficiency at light loads

AbstractVector control of induction motors has provided us with both good performance and acceptable efficiency at rated loads. Using this method at light loads reduces the efficiency due to the adjustment of motor flux at the rated value. Electric motors are normally used even at lower loads than the rated ones and often selected oversized. Enhancing the efficiency of induction motors at light loads will significantly reduce electric energy consumption. A novel method called Flux Angle Control (FAC) of the induction motor is presented to improve efficiency in the steady state at light loads. To increase the accuracy of the induction motor model we consider iron losses. This method controls the angle between the stator flux (stator current) and the d‐axis (rotor flux direction). The primary aim of the flux angle control method is to reduce the flux level and increase the flux angle at light loads. The optimal flux angle is sensitive to some induction motor parameters. The proposed method offers several advantages compared to similar methods, including high efficiency, minimal sensitivity of the optimal flux angle to changes in motor parameters, a reduced number of calculations, and easy implementation. The validity of this method is examined through experiments.

Improving the efficiency of induction motor drive by flux and torque control: A hybrid LSE-RERNN approach

A hybrid technique is proposed in this manuscript for the optimal design of an induction motor (IM) drive for the dynamic load profiles during torque and flux control. The proposed hybrid method combines a Ladder-Spherical-Evolution-Search-Algorithm (LSE) and a recalling-enhanced recurrent-neural network (RERNN), which is called an LSE-RERNN technique. The major objective of the proposed method is to minimize IM losses while maintaining control over speed and torque. The proposed method effectively tunes the gain parameter of the PI controller for flux and torque regulation. The LSE methodgenerates a set of gain parameters optimally predicted by RERNN. The method reduces losses without prior knowledge of load profiles, achieving energy savings for steady-state optimum flux. The performance of the proposed technique is done in the MATLAB and is compared with different existing techniques. The value of the proposed method for the mean is 0.328, the standard deviation (SD) is 0.00334, and the median is 0.4173. The loss of the proposed method is much less than 0.3 W while compared to different existing approaches. Moreover, the computation time of the proposed approach is lesser than the existing techniques.

Rancang Bangun Multilevel Inverter dengan Filter Pasif L-C-L dan Teknologi IoT Untuk Memantau Perubahan Kecepatan Motor Induksi Satu Fasa

Multilevel inverter is a type of inverter used to generate AC signals with adjustable frequency and better quality. L-C-L passive filter is used to eliminate harmonic distortion in the generated AC signals. Meanwhile, IoT technology is used to remotely monitor and control the speed of the motor through a mobile application. In this thesis, the design of a flying capacitor multilevel inverter is used as an induction motor speed controller with the resulting Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) can be reduced if you add a level to the inverter. Then, L-C-L passive filter is designed to eliminate harmonic distortion in the generated AC signals. Furthermore, the implementation of IoT technology is carried out using Blynk IoT platform. The test results show that the multilevel inverter with L-C-L passive filter successfully generates AC signals with better quality compare without L-C-L passife filter. In addition, IoT technology is successfully implemented and allows users to remotely monitor and control the speed of the motor through a mobile application. Thus, the use of multilevel inverter with L-C-L passive filter and IoT technology can effectively increase the efficiency and control of single-phase induction motor.

Line Start Permanent Magnet Motors, by Arash Hassanpour Isfahani, in Ph.D dissertation, Department of Electrical Engineering, Tehran University, Iran, 2011. This paper presents the design and performance analysis of a line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motor to overcome the efficiency and power factor deficiencies of induction motors. Proper start-up and synchronization are considered. An optimization algorithm is applied to improve the rotor bar resistance for the smooth line start of the motor. Dynamic d-q modeling and finite element analysis are performed to predict the transient and steady-state performances of the motor. Based on the presented optimized design, a 3-phase, 4-pole, 2 kW line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motor is fabricated and tested. Simulation and experimental results validate the improved performance of the proposed optimized motor.

Increasing efficiency of induction motor by predictive control system

Standard squirrel-cage induction machine is widely used in industrial enterprises due to its advantages in terms of reliability, durability and economic efficiency. However, one of its disadvantages is that it suffers from a power dissipation factor due to its inability to balance active and reactive power consumption. Especially when the SCIM is running at no load condition or during the initial start-up, the power factor or useful operation and performance are drastically reduced. Therefore, improving the power factor of the induction machine is an actual topic for the following article, and has had some interesting solutions for several years. In this thesis, two different induction motor control algorithms (frequency converter and Predictive torque control) are included and a clear comparison between them is given. The main focus of this article is to design an induction motor control system using the two algorithms mentioned above, analyse the performance of different control methods, and experimentally verify these algorithms by comparing simulations and experimental results.

Winding Magnetization Design of Single-Phase Capacitor-Run Induction Motor for Submersible Pump Application

This paper provides a systematic stator winding design scheme that can effectively improve the operational efficiency of commercial single-phase capacitor-run induction motors. Without changing the circuit components and structural constraints, the motor’s stator windings will be rearranged based on the devised theoretical basis and design objectives. The design scheme supported by the finite-element emulations will be supplied to show the efficiency improvement of a commercial single-phase 2-pole induction motor. In addition, experimental hardware validations will be accomplished from the motor with rewound stators, and evident performance advances from measurements confirm the design.

Energy Efficiency of Induction Motor Drives: State of the Art, Analysis and Recommendations

Despite activities to introduce low-carbon energy sources worldwide, the share of conventional facilities burning organic fuels remains high. One approach to address this problem is to look for solutions to reduce energy consumption. There are various research projects in the area of energy efficiency that lead to diverse results—such as models, methodologies, new data and theories. On the other hand, induction motor drives are becoming a major consumer of electric power because of their wide range of applications. In this paper, after careful selection and systematization of 151 literature sources, an extensive study and criteria analysis of the existing state of affairs in the area of energy efficiency improvement of induction motor drives has been carried out. Five major and 48 minor research areas in this field have been identified. The results show that issues related to the adaptation of scientific results and the conditions for their effective and wide-ranging application in practice have not been discussed and investigated so far. Adaptation should take into account the possibilities of data acquisition, including data from measurements; the competences of energy managers; and the type of information provided to them. Based on the seven conclusions formulated below, summary recommendations are made to direct future research towards the justification of models for increasing the power efficiency of induction drives, adapted for use by energy managers.

Effects of WEDM and AWJ cutting methods on induction motor efficiency and total magnetic losses: Experimental design and response surface methodology

In this study, the effect of cutting electrical steel laminations using abrasive water jet (AWJ) and wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) techniques on 5.5 kW induction motor efficiency (MEfficiency) and total magnetic losses (TLosses) was investigated. After the stator and rotor packages were formed, winding, varnishing and mechanical assembly processes were carried out and the motors were prepared for MEfficiency and TLosses tests according to the IEC 60034-2-1-1A standard. Tests were performed using different frequencies (f) and motor loading rates (MLoad). While burr formation was observed with the effect of plastic deformation on the cutting edge of electrical steels with AWJ, recast layer formation was observed with the effect of heat in WEDM. MEfficiency decreased while TLosses increased due to increasing f and MLoad in both cutting methods. Maximum MEfficiency and minimum TLosses values were measured in WEDM, it was determined that optimum results using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were measured at f of 50 Hz and MLoad of 100% values in both cutting methods. The statistical effects of f and MLoad on MEfficiency and TLosses were revealed with ANOVA (Analysis of variance). In addition, mathematical models were developed for the prediction of MEfficiency and TLosses.

Improving the starting torque and overall efficiency of split single phase induction motor

<span lang="EN-US">Single-phase split induction motors consist of an auxiliary coil, a main winding and a centrifugal switch that separates the auxiliary coil. The starting torque of this motor is not large, and a resistance has to be added with the additional coil to increase the starting torque. Also, a mechanical centrifugal switch is used to disconnect the auxiliary coil. The motor also has another drawback that it has a constant speed. The aim of this research is to replace the added resistance with a current transformer that has a predetermined resistance and connected in series with the auxiliary coil such that it results in a maximum starting torque. In addition, it sends a signal to a control circuit that disconnect/connect the auxiliary coil through an electronic switch connected in series with the auxiliary coil. The connection/disconnection of the switch depends on the motor current not the motor speed to overcome the problem of switch false triggering due to motor overloading. The new technique increases the overall efficiency of the motor. MATLAB is used to simulate the system and verify the mathematical model.</span>

Enhancement of Induction Motor Efficiency using Nanocoated with Enamel

Heat generation that affects the ’performance and lifespan of the motor's, are the primary problem with asynchronous motors. These entities are primarily the result of inadequate electrical motor insulation, which can be avoided by utilizing enamel-filled Nano filler insulation. It has been demonstrated over the past few decades that including a Nano filler to enamel utilized in induction motors has improved its characteristics. This study investigates the performance of asynchronous motor coated with Nano filler consisting of Al2O3 and Zn O along with enamel. The motor's efficiency, power factor, torque, and other parameters are analysed before and after the Nano coat. The findings demonstrated that the Nano coating technology significantly improved the motor's efficiency, power factor, and torque, indicating a reduction in energy losses due to friction and heat. The study suggests that the use of hybrid Nano filler can be a valuable investment for industrial applications that require high reliability and efficiency.

Vibration Magnitude Analysis on Induction Motors of Different Efficiency Classes Due to Voltage Unbalance

Small efficiency improvement in induction motors (IMs) often lead to large monetary savings over time. These monetary savings justify the current movement toward the use of higher efficiency IMs. In many cases, replacing a standard efficiency IM with a higher efficiency one is transparent to the user. In other cases, however, there are side effects which need to be considered. This paper presents data showing that vibrations due to voltage unbalance are significantly more pronounced on higher efficiency IMs than in standard efficiency ones. This paper presents the mathematical expressions for active power for an IM under voltage unbalance. Then the paper describes a dynamic simulation framework to validate the paper's hypothesis over a wide range of IMs and a laboratory the test setup used to validate the mathematical expressions with experimental results of standard (IE1), premium (IE3) and super premium (IE4) IMs. Finally, the paper presents vibration measurements due voltage unbalance, and compares the results with the measured vibration levels with the ISO 20816-1 standard vibration severity guidelines

Experimental and statistical analysis of the effects of punching and laser cutting methods on induction motor efficiency and total magnetic losses in silicon lamination sheets

In this study, M400-50A electrical steel laminations (ESLs) used in electrical machines were cut with punching and laser methods and the effect of these cutting methods on the efficiency and total losses of induction motors was investigated. ESLs were prepared by laser and punching cutting methods concerning an induction motor with a power of 5.5 kW. After the stator and rotor packages were created, processes such as winding, varnishing, and mechanical assembly were performed on the motors. It is prepared for motor efficiency (MEfficiency) and total magnetic losses (TLosses) tests according to the direct measurement method specified in the IEC 60034-2-1-1A standard. Four different frequencies (f: 50, 75, 100 and 125 Hz) and five different motor loading rates (MLoad: 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125%) were defined as independent variables in the tests. MEfficiency and TLosses values were measured as dependent variables. Plastic deformation and edge rounding were observed on the edges cut with punching and edge rounding and angled edge formation on the edges cut with the laser. The average surface roughness of the laser-cut edges was determined to be higher than the ESLs cut by punching. It was observed that TLosses increased while MEfficiency decreased with increasing frequency and MLoad value in motor tests. It was determined that the training, testing, and experimental data are quite compatible with each other and the R2 values are close to 1 in the statistical analyzes performed with ANN (Artificial neural network). In addition, it was specified that RMSE (Root mean square error) and MAPE (Mean absolute percentage error) values vary between 0.007 and 13.310% for each cutting method and mathematical models can be used to predict MEfficiency and TLosses with ANN.
