Leukocytes Do Not Influence the Safety and Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections for the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is increasingly used for the injection treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the role of leukocytes contained in PRP is controversial, with some preclinical studies suggesting detrimental effects and others emphasizing their contribution in secreting bioactive molecules. Purpose: To compare the safety and effectiveness of leukocyte-rich PRP (LR-PRP) and leukocyte-poor PRP (LP-PRP) for the treatment of knee OA. Hypothesis: That leukocytes could influence results both in terms of adverse events and clinical outcomes. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. Methods: This double-blind randomized controlled trial included 132 patients with Kellgren-Lawrence grade 1-3 knee OA who were randomized to a 3-injection cycle of either LR-PRP or LP-PRP. Patients were prospectively assessed at baseline and at 2, 6, and 12 months with subjective evaluations comprising the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, the KOOS (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score), the WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index), the visual analog scale for pain, the EuroQol–visual analog scale, the EuroQol–5 dimensions, and the Tegner activity scale. Objective evaluations consisted of the IKDC objective score, active/passive range of motion, and circumference of the index and contralateral knees. Patient judgment of the treatment was recorded as well as adverse reactions and failures. Results: An overall improvement in subjective and objective outcomes was documented, with no differences between the 2 groups, except for the improvement in the IKDC subjective score at 2 months, which was greater for the LR-PRP group compared with the LP-PRP group (14.8 ± 14.8 vs 8.6 ± 13.3, respectively; P = .046), as well as for active (P = .021) and passive (P = .040) ROM of the index knee at 6 months, showing statistically significant higher values in the LP-PRP group; and for quadriceps circumference of the index (P = .042) and contralateral (P = .045) knees at 12 months, which were significantly greater in the LR-PRP group. The IKDC subjective score improved from 42.5 ± 17.6 at baseline to 55.6 ± 21.4 at 12 months for the LR-PRP group (P < .0005) and from 45.7 ± 16.4 to 55.3 ± 20.4 for the LP-PRP group (P = .001). No differences in terms of patient treatment judgment were observed at all follow-up time points. No severe adverse events related to the treatment were reported, but some mild adverse events related to the treatment were observed: 16 in the LR-PRP group and 17 in the LP-PRP group. Treatment failed in 5 patients in the LR-PRP group and 2 in the LP-PRP group. Conclusion: This double-blind randomized controlled trial demonstrated that leukocytes did not affect the safety and efficacy of intra-articular PRP injections for the treatment of patients with knee OA. Both LR-PRP and LP-PRP demonstrated comparable clinical outcomes at all follow-up time points, without showing differences in subjective and objective outcomes or in adverse events and treatment failures. Safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injection for treatment of erectile dysfunction: a prospective randomized controlled study

BackgroundAffected sexual relationships affect both the quality of life of men and women. Platelet-derived therapies are becoming increasingly popular in various medical and surgical fields because of their ability to aid in tissue healing and vascular remodeling. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in treating patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).ResultsFifty-two participants with mild to moderate ED were divided into two groups: group A, who received three PRP penile injections, and group B, who received three saline injections (5 ml for each injection site). The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) was used to evaluate all participants. A month after the last injection, the PRP group's IIEF was 16.12 ± 1.25, while the placebo group's was 15.99 ± 1.21 (p = 0.683). Following a 3-month period, the IIEF for the PRP group was 16.44 ± 1.17, while the placebo group's was 16.31 ± 1.06 (p value = 0.653). Following a 6-month period, the IIEF for the PRP group was 16.35 ± 1.45, while that for the placebo group's was 16.23 ± 1.19 (p = 0.727). In terms of IIEF, there was no significant difference between the two groups after one, three, and six months of treatment.ConclusionIn brief, our research revealed no data to support the application of PRP injections in the management of mild-to-moderate ED.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections With and Without Microneedling for Managing Atrophic Facial Acne Scars: A Prospective Comparative Study.

Background and aim The majority of acne has the potential to transform into facial scars, which have a physical and psychological effecton the individual. There are plenty of treatment optionsto manage such scars. The aim of this study is to assess the comparative effect of the injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) alone, with that of the injection of PRP with microneedling, in the reduction of atrophic facial acne scars. Methods A total of 30 participants were included in this study, divided into two groups (n = 15). Patients inGroup I received intradermal injection of PRP only, and Group II included patients receiving intradermal injection of PRP with microneedling. The scar appearance was evaluated at baseline, after one, two, and three months using Goodman Baron's scar scale. The statistics were analysed using the Chi-square and Student's t-tests. Results Patients in the PRP with microneedling group had lower acne scar scores on the Goodman Baron scale compared to those who received only PRP. The acne scores were statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) in the second and third months of treatment in Group II. Conclusion The addition of microneedling to PRP has proven to be effective in the reduction of facial acne scars. However, different types of scars require different modalities of treatment, and the final decision lies in the hands of the operator and the requirements of the patients.

Abstract Introduction Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) intracorporeal injection is one of the popular regenerative therapies that has been gaining much interest in recent years as an adjunct or alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Nevertheless, scientific evidence to support its clinical efficacy remains controversial. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of PRP injections for the treatment of ED. Methods A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, interventional clinical study was conducted on 52 subjects at the Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Beni-Suef University. Patients were randomized into two groups: the PRP group (n=26) and the placebo (saline) group (n=26). Each participant received three sessions (at two-week intervals) of PRP or saline injections according to his assigned group. International index of erectile function-5 (IIEF-5) scores and safety-related observations were collected at the 1st, 3rd, and 6th months of follow-up. Results The median age and ED duration were statistically comparable for both groups, 52.2 versus 52.5 years and 12.87 versus 11.8, respectively (P = 0.285). With regards to the efficacy of PRP, there were no statistically significant differences between both groups after 1, 3, and 6 months of treatment. After 1 month of treatment, the mean IIEF-5 score for the PRP group was 16.12 ± 1.25 versus 15.99 ± 1.21 for the placebo group (P = 0.683). After 3 months, the IIEF-5 score for the PRP group was 16.44 ± 1.17 compared to 16.31 ± 1.06 for the placebo group (P = 0.653). Also after 6 months, the IIEF-5 score for the PRP group was 16.35 ± 1.45 close to 16.23 ± 1.19 for the placebo group (P = 0.727). No transient hemorrhagic adverse events (hematuria, local petechial bleeding, or ecchymosis) or other side effects were reported during the injection and follow-up period for both groups. Conclusions The results of this trial suggest that although the treatment of ED with 3 injections of intracavernosal PRP separated by two-week intervals may be safe, it is not more effective than a placebo injection. A phase 2 randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial to evaluate safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections for Peyronie's disease: clinical trial update.

Peyronie's Disease (PD) is characterized by fibrotic plaques in the penile tunica albuginea, causing curvature and painful erections. Current treatments have limited established efficacy. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), known for modulating inflammation, offers a potential alternative. This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study at the University of Miami assesses PRP's safety and efficacy for PD. Forty-one PD patients were randomized into PRP-placebo (Group A) and placebo-PRP (Group B) sequences, receiving two injections of each treatment over three months, with a crossover to receive two injections of alternate treatment over the next three months. Assessments include pain scale, goniometry, questionnaires, and curvature evaluations. Preliminary analysis of 28 patients shows that PRP is safe. There were no adverse events, including penile complications, during follow-up. Pain scores during treatments showed no significant difference between PRP and placebo (p = 0.52). Over six months, the PRP-Placebo group's median PDQ score decreased from 1.9 (IQR: 1.7-2.9) to 1.4 (IQR: 0.7-2.1). This change was not statistically significant (p = 0.098). In contrast, the Placebo-PRP group showed a significant reduction from 1.8 (IQR: 1.4-2.6) to 1.2 (IQR: 1.0-2.0) (p = 0.020). No significant changes in IIEF scores were observed. Both groups initially had a median penile curvature of 40 degrees. At 3 months, the PRP-Placebo group's curvature decreased to 38 degrees (IQR: 35-47.5), while the Placebo-PRP group decreased to 35 degrees (IQR: 30-60). At 6 months, the PRP-Placebo group showed a significant reduction to 25 degrees (IQR: 20-40, p = 0.047), while the Placebo-PRP group's reduction to 32.5 degrees (IQR: 20-50) was not significant (p = 0.490). These early results indicate a delayed PRP effect, prompting further investigation into its long-term impacts. Although limited by sample size, this study suggests PRP injections as a safe treatment for PD, with ongoing research aiming to clarify its therapeutic value.

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes after Platelet-Rich Plasma and Rotator Cuff Repair in High-Grade Intrasubstance Partial Rotator Cuff Tears.

Platelet-rich plasma injections have been shown to have many useful applications in various musculoskeletal pathologies. Research on the use of PRP for intrasubstance partial-thickness rotator cuff tears is lacking, although these tears have unique properties that may increase the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections. Patients with MRI-confirmed high-grade intrasubstance partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, that had failed traditional non-operative treatment, were offered either surgical repair (Group 1) or a single ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma injection into the tear site (Group 2). Patients were followed at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and a minimum of 2 years post-injection with ASES scores. A total of 25 patients received platelet-rich plasma injections, compared to 20 patients who had rotator cuff repair for intrasubstance tears in the last 3 years. The mean pre-injection ASES score for the platelet-rich plasma group was 53.2 and this improved to 92.9 at a minimum 2-year follow-up. The average convalescence period following platelet-rich plasma injection was 3.3 months. The average post-operative convalescence period for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair was 4.6 months. Both surgical repair and platelet-rich plasma injection into the tear site are equally effective in the treatment of high-grade intrasubstance partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, while platelet-rich plasma provides significantly shorter recovery time.

The completely patient-reported version of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score: A valid and reliable measurement for ankle osteoarthritis

BackgroundThe American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle score (AOFAS) is an outcome measure for ankle and hindfoot conditions, which requires scoring from both the patients and the physician. A completely patient-reported version has been developed and used before, but its measurements properties are unknown. Our goal was to determine the measurement properties and the minimally important change (MIC) of a completely patient-reported AOFAS (PR-AOFAS) in patients with ankle osteoarthritis. Additionally, the MIC of both the PR-AOFAS and the AOFAS was estimated, which had not previously been done. Materials and methodsThe PR-AOFAS of 112 patients was evaluated for reliability, construct validity (using the AOFAS, Foot and Ankle Outcome Score, Ankle Osteoarthritis Score, Visual Analogue Scale, and Short Form-36), and responsiveness. The MIC was estimated using the optimal cut-off point of the receiver operating characteristic curve. This was a substudy of a randomized clinical trial on the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections for ankle osteoarthritis (OA). ResultsThe PR-AOFAS had sufficient construct validity, internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and responsiveness. The smallest detectable change at group level was 2.34. The MIC was 6.5 points (95% confidence interval: 0.6–14.4). ConclusionsThe measurement properties of the Dutch PR-AOFAS were sufficient in patients with ankle osteoarthritis who are willing to participate in a trial on injection therapy. The minimally important change of the PR-AOFAS is smaller than its smallest detectable change, making it more suitable for use in groups of patients, such as a research setting. Efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injection in the treatment of frozen shoulder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Frozen shoulder (FS) is characterized by progressive shoulder pain and a limited range of motion. Recently, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection is a newly developed treatment option for patients with FS and its efficacy needs to be examined. By conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study attempted to evaluate the efficacy of PRP injection in the treatment of patients with FS. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Elsevier, The Cochrane Library, WanFang Data and CNKI databases were searched up to May 31, 2020. This study included randomized controlled trials as well as prospective cohort studies. Two reviewers independently screened the title, abstract and full text in order to extract data from qualified studies. The main outcome was pain visual analogue score (VAS) while the secondary outcome was range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder joint that consists of four parts: internal rotation, flexion, external rotation and abduction. Three randomized controlled trials and one prospective cohort study met the inclusion criteria. Accordingly, a total of 359 cases were analyzed and followed up to 3 months. The control group included corticosteroids (CS), ultrasound therapy, and stellate ganglion block. Compared to other groups, VAS was statistically significant after 1 month and 3 months of treatment (SMD: -0.46, 95% CI: -0.75 to -0.18, P= 0.002; I=2 43.2%), (SMD: -0.87, 95% CI: -1.23 to -0.50, P= 0.00, I=2 61.9%). Compared to the control group, only flexion of the patients treated with PRP demonstrated no significant improvement at 1 month, whereas internal rotation, flexion, external rotation and abduction of the shoulder were found to be improved following 3months of treatment. The corresponding findings illustrate that compared to other non-operative treatments, local injection of PRP can effectively improve pain and shoulder motion in patients with FS. However, due to the short follow-up time and limitations regarding the quantity and quality of studies, the above conclusions require further elucidation by performing additional high-quality studies.

Efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injection versus other conservative treatments of carpal tunnel syndrome: A meta-analysis

Objective: Injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a proposed treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a recent innovation. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the functional and objective outcomes after PRP injection versus other conservative treatments of CTS. Methods: We systematically searched the electronic databases for trials that met our inclusion criteria. Two reviewers screened the studies, extracted the data, evaluated the methodological quality, and performed data analysis. Subgroup analysis was stratified by the follow-up periods. Results: Five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and one prospective cohort trial met the inclusion criteria. A total of 318 subjects were reported including 160 with PRP injection and 158 with other conservative treatments. The quality of the included studies was high. The meta-analysis showed that no significant differences were detected in the visual analog scale (VAS), the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire-the syndrome (BCTQ-S) and the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire-the functional status (BCTQ-F) at 6 months, changes of VAS, BCTQ-S and BCTQ-F, distal motor latency (DML) and sensory conduction velocity (SCV) between the PRP injection and other conservative treatments. However, the BCTQ-S and BCTQ-F score at 3 months of PRP injection were significantly lower than other conservative treatments. Conclusion: Current evidence revealed that there were no significant differences between PRP injection and other conservative treatment in relief pain, improving clinical symptom and functional status and electrophysiological findings at the final follow up period. However, PRP injection could improve the clinical symptom and functional status at the early period (3 months) of treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma Injection in the Treatment of a Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis: A Case Study

Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a common musculoskeletal problem that causes so much disability in the foot. Recently, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection has been recommended for the treatment of patients with chronic plantar fasciitis (PF), particularly where physiotherapy or other conservative treatments have failed or pain is limiting exercise, in order to reduce heel pain and improve functional restoration. In this case study, a patient who PF for 16 years and had failed all conservative treatments including cortisone injection was treated with platelet-rich plasma injections twice and made significant improvements with 100% reduction in pain intensity measured using numeric pain scale (NPS) from 10 to 0 and improvement in her lower limb functional by 56% from 68 to 24/80, which was assessed using lower extremity functional scale (LEFS) score. There were no safety issues recorded. Conclusion: Injection of autologous PRP for chronic plantar fasciitis was found to be beneficial in terms of pain relief (reduced NPS score) and functional outcome (improvement in LEFS score). However, a large scale and a properly randomised controlled study is needed to prove further efficacy of PRP injection.

Tolerance and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections in Peyronie's disease: Pilot study.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are increasingly proposed for the treatment of Peyronie's disease since the discontinuation of Xiapex® despite poorly understood results. Evaluation of the tolerance and efficacy of intra-plate PRP injections in patients with Peyronie's disease. Three intra-plate injections of PRP were performed 15 days apart in 17 patients with Peyronie's disease. The Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ) and the measurement of the angle of curvature of the erect penis were assessed before treatment and then 1, 3 and 6 months after treatment. Erectile function was assessed by different questionnaires (IIEF-EF, EHS, SEP, sexual discomfort score). No side effects were noted during the study period. Three months after treatment, all three PDQ domains were significantly improved (P=0.002; P=0.015; P=0.017 respectively). The angle of curvature of the penis was significantly decreased by 11.8° with a mean angle of 40.4° before treatment and 28.6° after (P=0.007). The IIEF-EF score was significantly improved after treatment (mean preoperative value: 10.67) with a gain of 5 points at months 1 and 6 (P=0.01 and P=0.036 respectively) and 7 points at month 3 (P=0.04). Our initial experience suggests that PRP injections for Peyronie's disease are safe. Although the limited data is suggestive of efficacy, a placebo control will be required for confirmation.

Comparing the efficacy of different intra-articular injections for knee osteoarthritis: A network analysis.

Background:The findings on the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma, ozone, and hyaluronic acid in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee are controversial, and the existing original studies and meta-analyses are mostly comparisons of a single joint cavity injection method, lacking direct and indirect comparisons of different drugs in the joint cavity. The lack of direct and indirect comparisons of different drugs in the joint cavity makes it difficult to have a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of joint cavity injection methods. In this study, the efficacy of platelet-rich, ozone, sodium hyaluronate, and combined knee cavity injections were compared directly or indirectly using a reticulated meta-analysis in this field, and the efficacy of treatment measures was ranked to provide more comprehensive and reliable evidence-based clinical evidence for the selection of knee cavity injections in osteoarthritis of the knee.Objective:To compare the effects of platelet-rich plasma, ozone, and sodium glassate injection interventions on the efficacy of osteoarthritis of the knee through reticulated Meta-analysis, and to comprehensively compare the clinical effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma, ozone, and sodium glassate injection joint cavity injection for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.Methods:The PubMed, CBM, CNKI, VIP, and Wan-Fang databases were searched for information on the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma, ozone, and sodium vitrate injection for the comparative treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, with a search time frame of each database from the date of creation to July 20, 2021. Two investigators independently screened the literature, extracted data according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and evaluated the quality of the literature in parallel. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata 16.0 software to compare the differences in the efficacy of each treatment measure using the ratio and 95% confidence interval as effect indicators and to rank the efficacy.Results:Thirty-three RCTs with 7003 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were included, involving 5 therapeutic measures. Meta-analysis showed that the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injection was superior to both ozone and hyaluronic acid therapies. Hyaluronic acid+ozone and platelet-rich plasma+hyaluronic acid were both superior to ozone and hyaluronic acid monotherapy. The differences in efficacy between hyaluronic acid and ozone compared with platelet-rich plasma were statistically significant, and the differences in efficacy between the 2 combination therapies (platelet-rich plasma+hyaluronic acid, hyaluronic acid+ozone) and the 3 monotherapies (platelet-rich plasma, ozone, hyaluronic acid) were statistically significant. Platelet-rich plasma+hyaluronic acid, hyaluronic acid+ozone compared with 3 monotherapies (platelet-rich plasma, ozone, hyaluronic acid) were statistically significant, except for the difference in efficacy with platelet-rich plasma, which was not statistically significant, indicating that this platelet-rich plasma+hyaluronic acid and Hyaluronic acid+ozone combination therapy was superior to monotherapy. Also, the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma was better than hyaluronic acid and ozone and the difference was statistically significant, indicating that platelet-rich plasma was more effective than ozone and sodium glass in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee in monotherapy.Conclusion:It is believed that in the course of clinical practice, hyaluronic acid+ozone or platelet-rich plasma+hyaluronic acid combination therapy or platelet-rich plasma therapy can be preferred for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection in the Management of Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy: A Review of the Current Literature.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is being projected as a newer and superior treatment option for rotator cuff tendinopathy. With the first use of PRP in trauma and orthopedics dating back only to 1998, its advent into the field is relatively recent. Thus, data on long-term efficacy, large cohort studies, or large randomized controlled trials are fairly limited. Moreover, owing to the absence of standardized methods of platelet extraction and lack of consensus on the ideal concentration of platelets in PRP, data comparison from different studies is difficult. Things are complicated by the fact that it is also not clear whether a single injection of PRP is therapeutic or if multiple serial injections are needed to produce the desired effects. The literature on efficacy and pain relief is also obtained from studies with low sample sizes and short follow-ups. The dropout rate and noncompliance rate were also found to be high in some studies. Thus, the data is often not clinically significant and may also be biased due to the non-standardized inclusion and exclusion criteria of the studies. Though multiple studies have suggested good pain control with PRP injection, many studies have found that PRP injection therapy may not be any better than the physical therapy regimen prescribed to patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Also, the data on the efficacy of PRP on shoulder function and shoulder range of motion is at variance. This submission aims to evaluate the efficacy and use of PRP in the management of rotator cuff tendinopathy.

Assessment of the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections in the management of severe dry eye

Purpose This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection into the lacrimal gland in severe dry eye and to compare it with preservative-free artificial tears. Patients and methods This study included a total of 74 eyes of 40 patients divided into two groups. The intervention group received three PRP injections transcutaneously in the region of the lacrimal gland. The control group was treated with preservative-free artificial tears. Results The intervention group showed improvement in all measured parameters, except the Meibomian gland score, with a statistically significant improvement in the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score (P&lt;0.001) and the Schirmer test (P=0.011) and less significant improvement in the ocular surface staining score (P=0.076) and tear breakup time (TBUT) (P=0.09). Compared with the control group, the PRP intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement in the OSDI score (P&lt;0.001), the Schirmer test (P=0.005) and the ocular surface staining score (P=0.013) and less significant improvement in TBUT (P=0.2). Conclusion The use of PRP injections is safe and effective, with improvement in the OSDI, Schirmer test, and ocular surface staining and less improvement in TBUT, but it is not effective in improving Meibomian gland function.

Health-Related Quality of Life in Ankle Osteoarthritis: A Case-Control Study.

ObjectiveAnkle osteoarthritis (OA) has a prevalence of 3.4% in the general population of which 70% to 78% is posttraumatic, affecting younger patients with a longer projected life span compared with hip and knee OA. The current literature reports the physical and mental quality of life (QoL) of patients with ankle OA, to be similar to end-stage hip OA, end-stage kidney disease and digestive heart failure. However, the QoL of ankle OA patients has not yet been determined compared with a matched control group representing the general population. Our aim is to determine the physical and mental QoL compared with a matched control group.DesignThe Physical and Mental Component Summaries of the Short Form–36 of 100 patients with ankle OA were compared with 91 age- and gender-matched controls. This case-control study is a substudy of the PRIMA trial, in which the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections for ankle OA is determined.ResultsA clinically relevant difference was found for both the Physical (P=0.003; 95% CI −6.7 to −1.3) and Mental Component Summary scores (P < 0.001; 95% CI −10 to −6). Patients with ankle OA had a median of 45 points (matched controls 52 points) and 43 points (matched controls 53 points) for the Physical and Mental Component summary scores, respectively.ConclusionsPatients with ankle OA had a clinically relevant poorer mental and physical QoL compared with matched controls from the general population. Furthermore, the physical QoL of patients with ankle OA from younger age categories was affected more than those in older age categories.
