Effects of trunk stabilization exercises on balance, functionality and abdominal muscle thickness in hemiplegic patients.

This study aims to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercises (TSEs) in addition to conventional exercises in patients with stroke on balance, functionality and abdominal muscle thickness as measured by ultrasonography (USG) and to compare the patients' non-paretic side abdominal muscle thickness with healthy population. Between April 2019 and June 2019, a total of 26 hemiparesis/hemiplegic patients with stroke (15 males, 11 females; mean age: 62.3±7.8 years; range, 52 to 71 years) confirmed by neurological examination or computed tomography (CT) / magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 20 age-matched healthy volunteers (12 males, 8 females; mean age: 62.3±7.2 years; range, 53 to 70 years) were included in the study. The patients were randomized into two groups. In the first group (n=13), TSE were performed in addition to conventional neurorehabilitation program, five times/week for a total of four weeks. The second group (n=13) was given conventional neurorehabilitation program, five times/week for a total of four weeks. Also, healthy volunteers as the third group were compared with the patient population. The evaluations were made at the beginning and end of the treatment. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Barthel Index (BI), Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (PASS), and Functional Reach Test (FRT) were used. Abdominal muscle thickness at rest and contraction were evaluated using USG. Ten patients in Group 1 and 10 patients in Group 2 completed study. A significant improvement was observed in all abdominal muscles in both groups (p<0.05), indicating no significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant improvement for BBS and FRT in both groups. The PASS and BI scores showed a significant improvement only in TSE group. Both the TSE and conventional neurorehabilitation program provided significant improvements in abdominal muscle thickness, balance and trunk control. For postural control and functionality, additional TSE seems to be more effective.

Effects of trunk stabilization exercises using laser pointer visual feedback in patients with chronic stroke: A randomized controlled study.

Many previous studies have cited the importance of trunk stabilization exercises in patients with stroke. However, the evidence for optimal trunk stabilization exercises for patients with stroke is still lacking. To investigate the effects of laser pointer visual feedback in trunk stabilization exercises that are important for improving trunk dysfunction in patients with stroke. In total, 30 patients with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group underwent a traditional stroke rehabilitation program and trunk stabilization exercises using laser pointer visual feedback. The control group underwent a traditional stroke rehabilitation program and trunk stabilization exercises without visual feedback. Pre- and postintervention results after 6weeks were evaluated using the Berg Balance Scale, static and dynamic plantar pressure, 10-m walk test, and the Korean version of the Fall Efficacy Scale. The results were analyzed using a general linear repeated measurement model. Both groups showed significant improvements in BBS scores, static plantar pressure, dynamic plantar pressure, 10 MWT, and K-FES scores after 6weeks of intervention (P< 0.05). Compared to the control group, significant improvements were observed in the experimental group in the Berg Balance Scale scores, dynamic paretic posterior plantar pressure, 10-m walk test, and Korean version of the Fall Efficacy Scale scores (P< 0.025). Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of visual feedback during trunk stabilization exercises for resolving trunk dysfunction in patients with stroke. Trunk stabilization exercises using laser pointer visual feedback have been found to be more effective in balance, walking, and fall efficacy in patients with stroke.

Effect of Trunk Stabilization Exercises on Static and Dynamic Sitting Balance among Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Control Trial

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of trunk stabilization exercises on Static and Dynamic Sitting Balance among Children with Cerebral Palsy Method: This randomized controlled trail was conducted at physiotherapy department, Mayo hospital, Lahore. 38 children were with cerebral palsy were enrolled in this study via non-probability purposive sampling technique which later on randomized and allocated to two equal groups. Group A received specific core stability training while group B received conventional physical therapy treatment. Written informed consent was procured from every participant or their guardian through signed consent forms. Questionnaire used for data collection was Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) also used for assessment of sitting balance. Results: Descriptive statistics showed participants were having mean age of6.00 ±2.00 for group A and 5.52±.1.80 for Group B. Participants who received trunk stabilization exercises showed marked improvement as compared to group B. There was a statistically significant improvement in all measured variables following the intervention (P&lt;0.05). Pre-treatment sitting GMFM mean score in group A was 27.54 ± 3.61, while in group B was 26.48 ± 4.64. After 3 week treatment mean score in group A was 30.04 ± 3.81 and in group B was 27.43 ± 4.36 and post treatment mean score in group A was 32.80 ± 3.54 and in group B was 29.46 ±4.36. Practical Implication: This research would lay another evidence highlighting the effectiveness of trunk stability exercises to not only improve sitting balance among cerebral palsy patients but also the quality of life among them. Conclusion: It was concluded from the study that trunk stabilization exercises showed significant improvement in static and dynamic sitting balance scale among cerebral palsy children. The children when treated with trunk stabilization exercises showed a significant treatment outcome when analyzed on Gross Motor Function Measure GMFM-88. The Effects of Trunk Stabilization Exercise on Gross Motor Function, Functional Independence and Trunk muscle activity of Spastic Cerebral Palsy Children

The purpose of this study is to investigate how applying trunk stabilization exercises for 8 weeks to children with spastic cerebral palsy on their gross motor function, functional independence, and trunk muscle activity. A diagnosis of spastic cerebral palsy was experienced in 15 children. The trunk exercise was composed of three types of exercises: abdominal drawing exercise, Bridge exercise, and Sit up exercise for 20 minutes at a time, twice a week, for 8 weeks. Significant increases were maintained in sitting, crawl and kneeling position among GMFM at both 4 weeks and 8 weeks of application (p<.05). There was a significant increase in both the WeeFIM mobility and locomotion category after 4 weeks and 8 weeks of application (p<.05). Trunk muscle activity also showed a significant increase in the rectus abdominis and external oblique abdominal muscles at both 4 and 8 weeks of application (p<.05). It was found that the trunk stabilization exercise program is an effective intervention method for improving gross motor function, functional independence, and muscle activity, which are measures of motor function in children with cerebral palsy.

Immediate Effects of Stabilization Exercises on Trunk Muscle Activity during Jump Header Shooting: A Pilot Study.

This study aimed to clarify trunk muscle activity during jump header shooting and examine the immediate effects of trunk stabilization exercises on trunk muscle activity. Nineteen males who had played soccer for over 5 years were assigned to either the trunk stabilization exercise group or the control group. Muscle activity during jump header shooting was measured before and after intervention. The intervention in the trunk stabilization exercise group was trunk muscle training, whereas that in the control group was sitting. The phases of jump header shooting and the effects of the interventions were compared. In pre-intervention measurements, the internal oblique activity during the push-off phase and early floating phase was significantly greater than that during the late floating phase (p < 0.01667). In pre-intervention measurements, the muscle activity of the internal oblique increased from the push-off phase, prior to the increase in muscle activity of the rectus abdominis and external oblique, whereas the muscle activity of all abdominal muscles increased immediately after take-off. The trunk stabilization exercise intervention decreased the muscle activity of the erector spinae (p < 0.05). There seems to be a certain activation sequence in the abdominals during jump header shooting, and a single application of stabilization exercises could possibly reduce the activation of the back muscles.

Effects of Trunk Stabilization Exercise Using the Abdominal Expansion Maneuver on Postural Stability and Functional Movement in College Athletes

PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercise (TSE) with abdominal expansion maneuver (AEM) that lasted for 8 weeks on postural stability and functional movement in college athletes.METHODS Twenty college athletes participated in the program (AEM=9, Control=11) and were subjected to 8-week TSE. The AEM group performed exercise by applying AEM techniques during TSE, and control group performed TSE without breathing-related instructions. Both groups measured postural stability with lower-quarter Y-balance test (LQYBT) and functional movement with functional movement screen (FMS) before and after applying TSE to verify the interaction before and after this study with the two groups. Two-way repeated analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the differences between groups and time for an absolute value of LQYBT and FMS, followed by Bonferroni’s multiple comparison tests for post-hoc analysis.RESULTS As a result of the left and right LQYBT, there was a significant difference between the time x group (p=.041, p=.033), and post-hoc analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between the AEM and control groups (p=.000, p=,000). Furthermore, the FMS total score indicated that there was a significant difference between the time × group (p=.039), and the post-hoc analysis showed the AEM group had significant results (p=.001), while there were no significant results in the control group (p=.255).CONCLUSIONS Application of AEM during TSE seems to be effective with regard to postural stability and functional movement in college athletes.

The Use of Armeo®Spring Device to Assess the Effect of Trunk Stabilization Exercises on the Functional Capabilities of the Upper Limb-An Observational Study of Patients after Stroke.

Almost half of stroke patients report impaired function of the upper limb and hand. Stability of the trunk is required for the proper movement of the body, including the legs and arms. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of trunk stabilization exercises on coordinated movement of the affected upper limb in patients after stroke, using an Armoe®Spring device and the “wall” and “abacus” functional tests. Materials and methods: This is a randomized, double-blinded study. The research was carried out in the Rehabilitation Clinic on a group of 60 stroke patients who were randomly assigned to groups differing in the rehabilitation program. The study group had physiotherapy based on the NDT Bobath concept and the control group used classic exercises. The importance of the trunk for upper limb coordination was assessed on the Armeo®Spring device using three evaluation programs, “perpendicular fishing”; “horizontal fishing”; “reaction time”, and two proprietary tests, “wall” and “abacus”. Results: The post-treatment analysis showed significantly better results in the study group for the abacus (p < 0.001), wall (p = 0.003) tests, and a significantly higher percentage of task completion in the vertical fishing (p = 0.036) and reaction time (p = 0.009) tests. Conclusions: Physiotherapy including exercises to stabilize the trunk had a significant effect on increasing the functional efficiency of the affected upper limb and on improving the handgrip strength. The Armeo®Spring device is a good device for the functional assessment of the upper limb before and after therapy.

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical effects of trunk stabilization exercise in patients with stroke via searching previous studies and orgarnizing their results on arm function, balance and walking. Literature review was conducted on the domestic journals published from 2010 to 2020. The journals were divided into 3 categories by physical function as follows: upper limb function, balance, and walking ability. 18 journals were finally included and the PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes) method was used for systematic analysis. 16 of the 18 journals applied the experiment to the experimental group and the control group, while others were carried out in a single group. Regarding the functions, four journals were on both upper limb function and balance, seven journals were on the only balance control, and seven journals were on both balance and gait ability. As a result, journals showed that trunk stabilization exercise has significant improvements in balance and walking ability. We suggested that trunk stabilization exercise may be helpful for improving the upper limb function, balance and gait ability in patients with chronic stroke.

The Effects of Static Balance Scale of Trunk Stability Exercise using Happyback in College Students in 20s

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trunk stability exercise used Happyback on static balance ability in college students in 20s. Thirty subjects participated in the experiment. Males and females were divided into 15 subjects in the experimental group and 15 subjects in the control group by random same ball selection. The experimental group applied the trunk stabilization exercise using the Happyback, and the control group applied the trunk stabilization exercise without the Happyback. The exercise program consisted of a total of 5 sets of balance support posture, left side plank posture, right side plank posture, bridge posture, and quadruped posture in a sitting state, and was performed 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The static balance index was measured with Tetrax, a posture measuring device. The subjects measured the static balance index before and after the experiment. The experimental group decreased in SS and WDI, but was not significant, increased significantly in force plate AB and force plate BD, and increased but not significant in force plate CD, force plate AC, force plate AD, and force plate BC. It is considered to prove that the static balance index improved when normal people performed trunk stabilization exercise using Happyback. In conclusion, Trunk stabilization exercise using Happy Bag is highly recommended as a new exercise method for static balance at home.

Background: Although studies have been conducted on muscle thickness and balance in trunk stabilization exercise and exercise using vibration props, studies on trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration for spinal alignment are still insufficient to draw a conclusion.Objectives: To investigate the effect of trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration on the spinal alignment in adult females.Design: A randomized controlled trial.Methods: Twenty-six adult females were randomly assigned to the experimental group (active vibration) and 13 control groups (active non-vibrating) and exercised three times a week for 8 weeks. Each group was measured for spinal alignment before exercise and 8 weeks after exercise. Spinal alignment, trunk imbalance, pelvic tilt, and pelvic torsion were measured using a spinal alignment analyzer.Results: Trunk imbalance was a significantly different depending on the time in the experimental group and the control group (P .05). Pelvic torsion was no significant difference in both groups (P>.05).Conclusion: This study demonstrates that trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration has a positive effect on the alignment of the spine.

The Effectiveness of Trunk Stabilization Exercise Combined with Vibration for Adolescent Patients with Nonspecific Low Back Pain.

There are many adolescent patients complaining of low back pain, but research on it is lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercise combined with vibration on the pain, proprioception, and kinematics of the lumbar spine (LS) during sit to stand (STS) in adolescent patients with nonspecific low back pain (LBP). Fifty LBP patients were recruited and were randomly divided into two groups: Vibration group (n = 25) and placebo group (n = 25). All participants underwent 36-sessions of training consisting of six exercises. The Vibration group provided vibration stimulation during exercise, but the placebo group did not. The Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and digital dual inclinometer were used to measure pain intensity and proprioception. The kinematics of the lumbar spine during STS were measured by motion capture system. After training, the pain and proprioception in the vibration group improved significantly greater than the placebo group (p < 0.05). The mobility of LS (maximum range of motion, angular velocity, lumbar to hip movement ratios) and lumbar-hip coordination during STS in the vibration group were significantly improved compared to the placebo group (p < 0.05). Thus, trunk stabilization exercise combined with vibration may be used to improve the pain, proprioception, and kinematic of the lumbar spine during sit to stand in adolescent patients with LBP.

Effect of trunk stabilization exercises on upper limb recovery in chronic stroke

Background: The trunk being the central key point of the body, proximal trunk control may be a prerequisite for distal limb movement control and functional activities. Sitting balance and selective trunk movements remain impaired together with limbs after stroke. Selective trunk muscle exercises are administered for rehabilitation of lower limb in reference to better trunk control, but therewith of upper limb functioning isn't well established in subjects with chronic stroke. Objective: To test the consequences of trunk stabilization exercises on upper extremity recovery in chronic stroke. Method: 30 subjects with chronic stroke were randomly divided into two groups (n= 15), group I was administered conventional therapy and group II, conventional therapy together with trunk stabilization exercises for five days per week for 3 weeks. Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale for upper extremity (FMA-UE), Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) and Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) were wont to analyse objective of this study. Results: Trunk stabilization exercises were showing significantly greater change in upper limb motor recovery and functionality than only conventional therapy intervention. Within the trunk stabilization exercise group, significant change in upper limb motor recovery (p< 0.05) and functional status (p< 0.05) with 95% confidence interval were found. There was no change found on improvising strength of activity performance in WMFT scale. Conclusion: Trunk stabilization exercises together with conventional therapy enhance upper limb recovery in subjects with chronic stroke.

Effects of Trunk Stabilization Exercise While Wearing a Pelvic Compression Belt on Walking and Balancing Abilities in Patients With Stroke

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of wearing a pelvic compression belt during trunk stability exercise on balance and gait ability in patients with stroke. Thirty-six patients with stroke participated and were randomly allocated to three groups: the paretic group (trunk stability exercise wearing a pelvic belt on the paretic side), the nonparetic group (trunk stability exercise wearing a pelvic belt on the nonparetic side), or the control group (trunk stability exercise without a pelvic belt). Walking and balancing abilities were assessed before and after trunk stabilization exercise. Significantly larger gains were identified in the paretic group than in the control group for all variables (P < 0.017). In addition, significantly larger gains were observed in the paretic group than in the nonparetic group (P < 0.017) (limit of stability, 15.6%; stance phase of paretic side, 4.1%; 10-m walking test, -10.1%; 6-min walking test, 4.6%). Wearing a pelvic belt on the paretic side during trunk stabilization exercise seems to be more effective at improving the balancing and walking abilities of patients with stroke than wearing a pelvic compression belt on the nonparetic side or not wearing a pelvic belt.

Effects of trunk stabilization exercise on the local muscle activity and balance ability of normal subjects.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercise on the transvers abdominalis (TA) and internal oblique (IO) muscle activity and balance ability of normal subjects. [Subjects and Methods] Forty healthy male subjects without orthopedic history of the lower extremity were selected for the present study. The experimental group received a hollowing exercise, curl-up and bridging exercise. The control group received a pelvic tilting exercise in the sitting position for the same period of time. [Results] Significant differences in the post-training gains in Balance index, TA, IO were observed between the experimental group and the control group. [Conclusion] The trunk stabilization exercise improved the balance ability and increased the activity of the TA and IO muscle.

Effect of trunk stabilization exercises on trunk muscle activation using different respiratory conditions.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to evaluate differences in trunk muscle activity after 4 weeks of trunk stabilization exercises performed under expiration and inspiration conditions. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty subjects were assigned randomly to an expiration group (n=15) or an inspiration group (n=15). The outcomes measured were magnitude of muscle activation (rectus abdominis, multifidus, internal oblique and external oblique) in the bridge position and performance on a trunk muscle endurance test. Paired t-tests were used to assess the statistical significance of the effects of the trunk stabilization exercise program within each group. [Results] Comparison of the electromyography activity of the trunk muscles revealed a significant increase in internal oblique activation in the inspiration group, and a significant increase in multifidus activation in the expiration group. Assessment of the endurance of the trunk muscles revealed a significant increase in both groups. [Conclusion] Our results showed that expiration during trunk stabilization exercises increased the activity of the multifidus muscle, while inspiration enhanced the activity of the internal oblique muscle. Different types of respiration seem to differentially affect trunk muscles during trunk stabilization exercises.
