Effects of oxidizer concentration and abrasive type on interfacial bonding and material removal in 4H-SiC polishing processes.

Determination of chemical effects involved in material removal during the polishing process of 4H-SiC has been a challenge. In this study, the polishing processes of 4H-SiC under the action of diamond and SiO2 abrasive in different concentrations of H2O2 solutions are investigated by reactive force field molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that 4H-SiC can be oxidized by H2O2 solution at the atomic scale, but the chemical reaction alone does not lead to material removal. An increase in the concentration of H2O2 solution and the mechanical action of abrasives can promote the oxidation of 4H-SiC. Since the mechanical removal dominates material removal when polishing 4H-SiC with diamond abrasive, there is no clear pattern in the effect of H2O2 solution concentration on material removal. Nevertheless, the removal of atoms associated with chemical bonds dominates material removal when polishing 4H-SiC with SiO2 abrasive. Therefore, the damage and atomic removal of 4H-SiC are lower. Since the H2O2 solution can increase the total number of bonds between 4H-SiC and SiO2 abrasive, an increase in the concentration of H2O2 solution can improve the material removal rate. These findings can provide guidance for the 4H-SiC polishing process in terms of abrasive and oxidizer selection.

Effects of different LED light spectra and nutrient solution strength on the growth, photosynthetic parameters, and nutrients uptake in tomato seedlings

Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is currently the most energy-efficient lighting technology, and its use in agriculture is rapidly increasing. This research aimed to investigate the interaction effect of nutrient solution concentration and light quality on tomato seedlings growth. The tested factors included two nutrient solution concentrations (50% and 33% Hoagland solution) and four ratios of blue (440 nm) to red (660 nm) light in LED lighting at a constant light intensity (B2R1, B1R1, B1R2, and B1R3). Height growth was greatest in the 33% nutrient solution × B1R2 light treatment and smallest in the 33% nutrient solution × B2R1 light treatment. Regardless of the nutrient solution concentration, total chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations decreased with an increase in the proportion of blue light. Plant absorption of sulfur was highest in the 50% nutrient solution × B1R2 light treatment, significantly higher than all other treatments. Although the 50% nutrient solution × B1R2 light treatment also showed the greatest magnesium absorption, it did not differ significantly from most of the other treatments. In general, for growing tomato seedlings, a high ratio of blue light regime (B2R1) with a dilute nutrient solution, enriched with magnesium and sulfur, can be recommended to prevent elongation disorder and have no negative impact on various growth and physiological indicators.

To extract uranium from seawater, the adsorbent needs to have high selectivity for uranium and good hydrophilicity, and could resist biological pollution and prevent Marine microorganisms from blocking chelate sites. For effective uranium extraction, a straightforward crosslinking technique is used to create a highly selective and biofouling-resistant poly(amidoxime) (PAO-Y) membrane. PAO-Y is characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDS, XPS, BET, WCA and NMR techniques. The effects of solution acidity, concentration, and adsorption time on its adsorption of uranyl ions and vanadyl ions are investigated. The composite material (PAO-Y) exhibits higher selective adsorption and affinity towards U(VI) compared to V(V). In simulated marine environment experiments, the material exhibited an adsorption capacity of 10.39 mg·g−1 for U(Ⅵ), which is five times higher than that for V(V). Furthermore, the adsorption partition constant for U(Ⅵ) is 1.44 × 105 mL·g−1, two orders of magnitude greater than that for V(V). The DFT calculations revealed specific coordination modes between PAO-Y and uranyl/vanadyl ions, elucidating the selective adsorption mechanism of uranium. The pentadentate coordination mode is shown by DFT calculations to be the most stable one. DFT calculations also show that the increase in the number of amino acid groups increases the interaction between the coordinating ligands and uranyl, but decreases the interaction between the coordinating ligands and vanadyl. These findings suggest that PAO-Y effectively enhance the selectivity and affinity towards uranyl ions during uranium extraction from marine environments and may find practical applications. After 15 days of continuous flow of 30 L natural seawater, PAO-Y obtained a total uranium capture capacity of 1.969 mg·g−1 in the fixed-bed adsorption system, making it a suitable candidate for uranium extraction from natural seawater.

Numerical investigation on thermal management performance of soft packing Li-ion batteries with oblique multi-channel cold plates

During the driving process of electric vehicles (EVs), the continuous high-rate discharge of the power battery causes significant heat accumulation. An efficient battery thermal management system (BTMS) is critical for the safe and stable operation of EVs. In this study, an oblique channel cold plate (OCCP) is designed based on the traditional straight channel cold plate (SCCP) in order to addresses the problem of excessive and uneven temperatures during the high-rate discharge of soft packing lithium-ion batteries. Effects of glycol solution concentration, coolant mass flow rate, coolant inlet temperature, oblique angle for cooling channel, ambient temperature and discharge rate for the cell on the performance characteristics of BTMS, including the cooling efficiency (φ) and pressure drop (ΔP), are analyzed numerically with Ansys Fluent software. The results show that the OCCP has better cooling performance and lower pressure loss than the SCCP. Based on the analysis with the orthogonal design method, when the glycol solution concentration is 20 %, the mass flow rate is 1.0 g/s, and the inlet temperature is 25 °C, the BTMS with SCCP could obtain the optimal performance, corresponding to that the maximum temperature (Tmax) of the battery is controlled at 32.056 °C, while the φ is 0.581, and the ΔP across the cold plate is 52.652 Pa. Furthermore, the cooling efficiency φ of the cold plate decreases with the increase in the oblique angle. When the ambient temperature is 35 °C, the OCCP with a 20° oblique angle provides the best cooling effect for the battery during a 10C discharge. This work is helpful for the design of liquid cold plates in BTMS under high-rate discharge conditions for power battery of EVs.

Experimental study on preparation of fly ash-based geopolymer blended with recycled calcium source

A large amount of waste eggshells raises environmental issues. This study uses eggshells as recycled calcium source to synthesize fly ash and eggshell geopolymer (FAEG). The effects of eggshell content, liquid-solid ratio, NaOH/Na2SiO3 ratio, and NaOH solution concentration on the strength of the FAEG were evaluated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. The geopolymerization products and microstructure characteristics of the FAEG were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TGA, and SEM test. The results show that eggshells acted as recycled calcium sources are capable of significantly enhancing the UCS of the FAEG. The optimal content of eggshells is 15%. The NaOH/Na2SiO3 ratio has a significant effect on the UCS of the FAEG, while the influence of liquid-solid ratio and NaOH concentration is slight. The optimal NaOH/Na2SiO3 ratio is 50:50 and the liquid-solid ratio is recommended to be 0.55. Eggshells take part in the geopolymerization by acting as a precipitating and seeding element in the reaction and favoring the generation of the geopolymeric gels in the FAEG.

Investigating the Effect of KOH Feed Concentration on a Stainless-Steel Anode Using a 3-Electrode Anion Exchange Water Electrolyser Cell Set-up

Anion-exchange membrane water electrolysers (AEM-WE) have the potential to lower the capital cost of hydrogen production compared to proton-exchange membranes water electrolysers (PEM-WE). The alkaline conditions of AEM-WE result in: (i) a kinetically more favourable oxygen evolution reaction (OER), (ii) the ability to use platinum group metal (PGM)-free metal catalysts, and (iii) reduced cell component costs because of the less corrosive operating conditions. However, AEM-WE is held back from commercialisation by limited current density and durability.1 Compared to conventional alkaline water electrolysis, AEM-WEs have the advantage of lower ohmic resistance thanks to a solid polymer electrolyte which provides intrinsic ionic conductivity instead of relying on 6 M KOH and a porous separator. Most studies show, however, that a dilute KOH feed (< 1 M), rather than pure water, is critical to reaching a high current density in AEM-WE. Varying the concentration of KOH in the feed solution impacts catalyst activity and membrane resistance thereby making performance measurements in AEM-WE more complex. Moreover, the overpotential for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significant due to its sluggish kinetics. This means full-cell measurements are insufficient for understanding the behaviour of OER and HER catalysts in AEM-WE. It is therefore crucial to make half-cell measurements in AEM-WEs to decouple the effect of the anode and cathode electrocatalysts from the overall cell performance.In this context, our group recently demonstrated a 3-electrode, 5 cm2 membrane electrode assembly electrolyser cell2 that uses a reference electrode to decouple the anode and cathode contributions to the overall water splitting reaction. The technique was demonstrated for AEM-WEs and is soon to be published by Malone et al. (Figure 1A)3. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of KOH concentration in the feed solution on OER by using this 3-electrode cell setup. We used a stainless steel (SS)-felt at the anode as both catalyst and porous transport layer (PTL) in different concentrations of KOH feed while maintaining Pt/C as the cathode catalyst. We also repeated the tests with various anode catalyst layers (IrOx, NiFeOx) in combination with the SS PTL. For each test, full and half-cell polarisation curves and impedance spectroscopy were recorded before and after a sixteen-hour durability test at 1 A cm-2 at 40 °C. The results revealed the catalytic significance of the SS-felt in 1 M KOH as recently shown by Chen et al.4 Additionally, we demonstrated how the SS masks the performance of an IrOx catalyst layer in 1 M KOH. Reducing the KOH concentration to 0.18 M resulted in ≈ 7 % increase in the overall cell voltage at 1 A cm-2 (from 1.88 V to 2.00 V at 40 °C in Figure 1B). Aside from the ≈ 35 % increase in membrane resistance (e.g. 180 to 240 mΩ cm2 at 0.9 A cm-2) in 0.18 M KOH, the higher overpotential arose from the anode (Figure 1C), which could be attributed to the higher OER overpotential of SS-felt in a lower pH solution. Meanwhile, there was no appreciable change in cathode overpotential when the KOH concentration was reduced. These findings demonstrate the importance of 3-electrode cell measurements for understanding the impact of each component in an AEM-WE cell. Furthermore, the results reveal that both the choice of PTL material as well as the concentration of feed solution should be considered when testing different catalysts in AEM-WE.

Identifying Target Molecule and Trace Amount of the Byproduct by Two-Dimensional Self-Assembly with Different Solution Concentrations.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful way to realize the recognition of self-assembled nanostructures on the atomic scale. In this article, dihexadecyl 6,9-bis((4-(hexadecyloxy)phenyl)ethynyl) phenanthro[9,10-c]thiophene-1,3-dicarboxylate (D-PT) and dihexadecyl 6-bromo-9-((4-(hexadecyloxy) phenyl)ethynyl)phenanthrol[9,10-c]thiophene-1,3-dicarboxylate (S-BrPT) with different substituents were chosen as the target system. D-PT with four side chains as the target molecule and S-BrPT with three side chains and a bromine substituent as the byproduct were mixed in a molar concentration ratio of 20:1. The effect of solution concentration on the molecular self-assembly of the mixture was investigated by STM at the hexadecane/HOPG interface. At high concentrations, only D-PT molecules formed a dimer pattern resulting from the intermolecular van der Waals force and self-adaption. Further diluting the solution, D-PT formed the coexisting dimer and linear structures, in which the linear pattern was formed via solvent coadsorption. At low concentrations, S-BrPT molecules forming N-shaped dimers appeared and filled the linear structure fabricated by D-PT molecules. With further decrease in the concentration, S-BrPT molecules formed N-shaped dimers covering almost half of the surface area, resulting from the C-Br···π and Br···H-C bonds. At very low concentrations, S-BrPT molecules formed N-shaped dimers to arrange the matrix architecture due to the coadsorption of more hexadecane molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the stronger intermolecular C-Br···π and Br···H-C bonds were significant factors in determining the formation of N-shaped dimers and the stability of this nanostructure. This work enriches the diversity of self-assembled motifs and provides a strategy to characterize different symmetric molecules with trace amounts in a mixed system by STM.

The Effect of Weed Solution Type and Concentration to Control Aphid Pests in Chrysanthemum Plants

Krisan atau Seruni (Chrysanthemum sp.) merupakan salah satu komoditas tanaman bunga hias yang penting dibandingkan dengan jenis bunga lainya. Hama Thrips sp merupakan salah satu hama utama bunga krisan selain Aphis sp. Kutu daun dapat menyebabkan kerugian signifikan. Salah satu alternatif untuk pengendalian hama Thrips sp adalah meggunakan bahan-bahan alami yang tidak berbahaya, misalkan beopestisida dari bahan tumbuhan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh jenis larutan gulma dan konsentrasinya dalam mengendalikan hama kutu pada Bunga Krisan. Rancangan penelitian yaitu Rancangan Acak Kelompok Factorial yang dilakukan dilapangan didalam green house, pada penelitian ini menggunakan dua factor yaitu factor I adalah Jenis Larutan Gulma dan factor II adalah konsentrasi larutan gulma. Data hasil produksi yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan analisis Varian dan dilanjutkan dengan uji jarak BNT atau Duncan 5 %, sementara data hasil kualitas bunga krisan dibandingkan dengan SNI 01-4478- 1988. Variabel yang diamati antara lain populasi kutudaun, mortalitas kutudaun, persentase kerusakan bunga, dihitung dengan menghitung helai bunga yang rusak dibagi jumlah helai bunga yang diamati, dan diameter bunga diamati pada saat bunga mekar penuh. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa jenis larutan Gulma Ageratum conyzoides menghasilkan pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman bunga krisan tertinggi dan persentase jumlah daun terinfeksi paling rendah. Penggunaan konsentrasi 300 gram/liter lebih efektif dalam menghambat serangan hama sehingga menghasiljan pertumbuhan bungra krisan lebih tinggi dan persentase jumlah daun terinfeksi paling rendah. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menyarankan penggunaan larutan Gulma Ageratum conyzoides pada konsentrasi 300 gram/liter untuk diaplikasikan pada tanaman Krisan sehingga dapat menghasilkan pertumbuhan yang optimal..

Suitable Water–Fertilizer Management and Ozone Synergy Can Enhance Substrate-Based Lettuce Yield and Water–Fertilizer Use Efficiency

As living standards rise, enhancing quality has become a central objective for many researchers. Soilless cultivation, known for its efficient use of resources, is increasingly used in vegetable production. It is critical to develop effective water and fertilizer management strategies to achieve high-quality yields and promote sustainable development in modern agriculture. This study employed an orthogonal experimental design to assess the impact of varying nutrient solution concentrations (50%, 75%, 100%, and 125% of Hoagland’s), lower irrigation thresholds (40%, 55%, 70%, and 85% field capacity (FC)), and ozone concentrations (0, 1, 2, and 4 mg·L−1) on lettuce growth, yield, quality, and water–fertilizer use efficiency. The results indicated that fixed nutrient solution concentrations and lower irrigation thresholds enhanced growth metrics for lettuce. Similarly, increasing ozone concentrations initially improved, then reduced growth metrics when the lower irrigation threshold was constant. Furthermore, maintaining stable ozone concentrations while raising the nutrient solution concentration initially boosted, then diminished, growth indicators. Optimal conditions for water and fertilizer management were identified at a nutrient solution concentration of 75% to 100% and an ozone concentration of 0 to 1 mg·L−1. Variance analysis highlighted the significant effects of nutrient solution concentration, lower irrigation thresholds, and ozone concentrations on lettuce yield, quality, and water and fertilizer use efficiency. Range analysis revealed the optimal management combination to be a nutrient solution concentration of 100%, an 85% lower FC irrigation threshold, and an ozone concentration of 1 mg·L−1, yielding 16.82 t·ha−1 of lettuce and a water use efficiency of 40.14 kg·m−3. These findings provide theoretical support for the sustainable advancement of soilless cultivation in contemporary agriculture.

Boosting mechanical properties of carbon fibers by gas-liquid dual-effect approach

The tensile strength and tensile modulus of existing carbon fibers (CFs) are 3 %–5 % of the theoretical values, which greatly limits the performance of CFs when used alone or as a reinforcing material. To increase the chemical reaction activity and roughness of the surface of CFs based on the enhancement of their mechanical properties, a comprehensive treatment of CFs was carried out by the gas-liquid dual-effect method. CFs were oxidized at high temperatures after immersion treatment using cobalt nitrate solution, and the effects of cobalt nitrate solution concentration, oxidation time, and calcination temperature on the surface morphology, functional groups, structural defects, and mechanical properties of CFs were investigated by the controlled-variable method. The results showed that when the concentration of cobalt nitrate solution was 0.2 molL-1, the calcination temperature was 200 °C, and the oxidation time was 4 h, the modification effect was the best. At this time, the tensile strength of CF is 6104.50 MPa, which is 40.35 % higher than that of the pure CF, and the tensile modulus is 378.56 GPa, which is 13.27 % higher than that of the pure CF, with a significant enhancement effect. It can offer feasible ideas for further research and development of CF composites, and provide an effective way to promote the industrialization of modified CFs for application.

Effect of spinning solution concentration of high DP and high S-diad PVA polymer on the structural properties of high-strength and high-modulus PVA fiber

To address the challenge of enhancing the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, constrained by the spinning process limitations, this study introduces a PVA/DMSO spinning solution. The solution, with concentrations ranging from 21.0 wt%, utilized PVA polymer (DP of 7499 and S-diad of 53.7 %) as the raw material. This approach facilitated the production of high-strength and high-modulus PVA fibers through a consistent dry-wet spinning method. The viscosity of the spinning solution was determined using a viscometer, while the PVA fibers underwent comprehensive characterization through various testing methodologies. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis revealed an initial increase followed by a decrease in the hydrogen bonding within PVA fibers as the spinning solution concentration increased. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imagery indicated that the surfaces of the PVA fibers were smooth. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses demonstrated that the melting temperature, thermal decomposition temperature, and crystallinity of the PVA fibers exhibited a similar trend of initial increase and subsequent decrease with rising concentrations of the spinning solution. In addition, mechanical tester indicated that when spinning solution concentration was 22.5 wt% the PVA fibers process best mechanical property, and the breaking strength and elastic modulus reached 15.02 ± 0.5 cN/dtex and 357.12 ± 9.4 cN/dtex, respectively.

Effect of solute concentration on the number of NaCl particles generated by millimeter- and micron-sized droplets

Salt particles generated by aerosol generator are commonly used in air filtration test. As a common phenomenon, the number of generated particles increases with the salt concentration in the atomization solution. Thus far, the dependence of the particle number on the concentration of the atomization solution is not fully understood. In this study, two hypotheses were proposed to explain this phenomenon: i) a single droplet generates multiple solid particles, and the generated particle number is influenced by the salt concentration, and ii) the original droplet number increases with an increase in the salt concentration of the atomization solution. By observing the particle formation process of the levitated millimeter-scale NaCl droplet, one droplet was found to generate one particle in free air. However, whether these results are applicable to micrometer-scale droplets remains to be determined. In situ measurements were performed to detect the size distributions of the original droplets generated by the atomization solutions with various salt concentrations. A more concentrated atomization solution induced a higher number of original droplets. Particle formation patterns of droplets on glass substrates and filaments were demonstrated. Traditional observation methods for droplet drying are unsuitable for studying the particle formation of atomized droplets because of the large difference in droplet size and the existence of external forces.

Experimental insight into dynamics of water droplet impacting on solid surface and theoretical prediction for maximum spreading coefficient at low Weber number

The hydrodynamics of a droplet impacting solid surface at low Weber number has been studied comprehensively by using a high-speed camera and a theoretical approach based on the improved models of surface energy and viscous dissipation. The impact process is elucidated by analyzing quantitatively the interface evolution of droplet impact solid surface, and the effects of glycerol solution concentration, surfactant concentration, impact velocity, and wall contact angle on spreading width and rebounding height are extensively investigated, respectively. Four stages, namely, approaching, spreading, retracting and stabilizing stages are identified visually during a complete droplet collision. Increasing the concentration of glycerol solution can simultaneously reduce droplet spreading width and rebounding height. However, improving surfactant concentration or enhancing impact velocity can promote droplet spread but hinder its rebound. Decreasing wall contact angle is beneficial to droplet propagation, whereas disadvantageous to droplet rebound. Both surface energy and viscous dissipation are accurately considered based on a real geometric shape and an improved spreading time at the maximum spreading, and thus a novel theoretical formula for the maximum spreading coefficient of droplet impacting at low Weber number has been developed and proved to have a higher prediction accuracy than the previous models under present experimental conditions.

Keratin extraction optimization from poultry feather using response surface- Box-Behnken experimental design method

This study aimed to develop a cost-effective method for managing chicken feather waste by hydrolyzing it in an alkaline medium to extract keratin hydrolysate. Through a Box-Behnken experimental design, the effects of NaOH solution concentration, temperature, and extraction time on the extraction process were examined. Analysis of the extracted keratin hydrolysate revealed the presence of key functional groups and characteristic protein structures. Optimization efforts identified 0.65 N NaOH solution concentration, 70 °C temperature, and 1-h extraction time as yielding the highest protein yield of 89.71 %. These findings underscore the potential of alkaline hydrolysis as a sustainable approach for both waste management and the extraction of valuable keratin hydrolysate. This research contributes to addressing the challenges faced by poultry farms in waste management while offering avenues for the utilization of keratin in various applications, thereby promoting environmental protection and human health.

Fabrication of 3D Polycaprolactone Macrostructures by 3D Electrospinning.

Building 3D electrospun macrostructures and monitoring the biological activities inside them are challenging. In this study, 3D fibrous polycaprolactone (PCL) macrostructures were successfully fabricated using in-house 3D electrospinning. The main factors supporting the 3D self-assembled nanofiber fabrication are the H3PO4 additives, flow rate, and initial distance. The effects of solution concentration, solvent, H3PO4 concentration, flow rate, initial distance, voltage, and nozzle speed on the 3D macrostructures were examined. The optimal conditions of 4 mL/h flow rate, 4 cm initial nozzle-collector distance, 14 kV voltage, and 1 mm/s nozzle speed provided a rapid buildup of cylinder macrostructures with 6 cm of diameter, reaching a final height of 16.18 ± 2.58 mm and a wall thickness of 3.98 ± 1.01 mm on one perimeter with uniform diameter across different sections (1.40 ± 1.10 μm average). Oxygen plasma treatment with 30-50 W for 5 min significantly improved the hydrophilicity of the PCL macrostructures, proving a suitable scaffold for in vitro cell cultures. Additionally, 3D images obtained by synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) presented cell penetration and cell growth within the scaffolds. This breakthrough in 3D electrospinning surpasses current scaffold fabrication limitations, opening new possibilities in various fields.
