Effects of proprioceptive training on gait and plantar pressure after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundPeople who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction have an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Abnormality of lower limb kinematics will occur after the operation. This may be related to lower limb muscle strength, the co-excitation of hamstrings and quadriceps femoris, and the weakness of proprioception. Proprioceptive training can improve the proprioception of lower limbs and promote the recovery of lower limb kinematics. Our research objective is to observe whether proprioceptive training can improve the proprioception of lower limbs within 3 months after surgery and whether the recovery of proprioception can correct the abnormal lower limb kinematics. The secondary objective is to explore the underlying mechanism of postoperative lower limb gait abnormalities.Methods/designThis study is a prospective single-center randomized clinical trial to be conducted in the Sports Medicine and Orthopedics of Zhongda Hospital Southeast University. Forty participants aged 18–50, preparing to undergo anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and initial anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using hamstring tendons as grafts will be randomly assigned to the intervention or comparator group. People in the intervention group will add proprioceptive training three times a week, 20 min each time. The intervention will be conducted on the first day after surgery. The researcher mainly collects the data of joint of sense, gait, and plantar pressure. The assessment will be divided into three stages: after signing the informed consent form (within 2 weeks before surgery), 6 weeks after surgery, and 12 weeks after surgery.DiscussionThe main purpose of our study is to explore whether the proprioception of patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is weakened, whether the lower limb kinematics is abnormal and whether the lower limb kinematics can be corrected through proprioceptive training.Trial registrationChinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2200065808. Effectiveness of proprioception training in functional recovery of thumb osteoarthritis. Single, multicenter, non-blind randomized clinical trial

Background and objectivesOsteoarthritis at the base of the thumb (CMC-1 OA) is a pathology that mainly affects postmenopausal women. The main symptoms including pain, decreased hand-thumb strength and fine motor capacity. Although a proprioceptive deficit has already been demonstrated in people with CMC-1 OA, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effects of proprioceptive training. The main objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of proprioceptive training in functional recovery. Materials and methodsA total of 57 patients were included in the study, 29 in the control group and 28 in the experimental group. Both groups underwent the same basic intervention programme, but the experimental group included a proprioceptive training protocol. Variables of the study were pain (VAS), perception of occupational performance (COMP), sense position (SP) and force sensation (FS). ResultsStatistically significant improvement was observed in the experimental group in pain (p < .05) and occupational performance (p < .001) after 3 months of treatment. No statistical differences were found in sense position (SP) or sensation of force (FS). Discussion and conclusionsThe results concord with previous studies focussing on proprioception training. The incorporation of a proprioceptive exercise protocol reduces pain and significantly improves occupational performance.

Effects of proprioceptive training using BOSU® balance trainer on core strength and static balance in young competitive rhythmic gymnasts

Purpose: The study aimed to examine the effects of eight weeks of proprioceptive training using a BOSU® balance trainer on core strength and static balance in young rhythmic gymnasts. Methods: Twenty-three young competitive female rhythmic gymnasts, (age: 9.7 ± 1.9 yrs; weight; 26.1 ± 6.5 kg; height: 131.2 ± 10.9 cm; years of experience in RG: 3.5 ± 1.7) were assigned into an experimental group (EG, n = 12) and a control group (CG, n = 11). Both groups underwent a series of tests included the side bridge test, the stork stand balance test, and the rhythmic gymnastics balance test before and after the experimental intervention. All participants engaged in regular rhythmic gymnastics training throughout the intervention period with EG supplemented with BOSU® balance trainer proprioceptive training. The intervention programme consisted of six sets of exercises that focused on improving core strength and static balance. Training volume was kept consistent throughout the experiment, with each exercise performed for 30 s followed by a 45-s rest in 2 sets, 3 times a week. Results: Results showed that EG improved core strength significantly for right (P &lt; 0.001) and left (P = 0.038) sides. However, there was no significant difference found in static balance (Stork Stand Balance Test and Rhythmic Gymnastics Balance Test) between EG and CG. Conclusion: The study concluded that proprioceptive training using BOSU® balance trainer implemented for 8 weeks on young competitive rhythmic gymnasts improved core strength but not in static balance

The effect of proprioceptive training on technical soccer skills in female soccer

Development of perceptual-cognitive motor skills is a crucial factor influencing soccer training and competition. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of neuromuscular coordination, proprioceptive and balance exercises on physiological attributes and technical skills in female soccer. Female soccer players competing in Greek A Division (N = 48) were assigned to intervention (N1 = 24) and control groups (N2 = 24). The Proprioceptive Training Intervention Program (PTIP) lasted approximately 20 min and was implemented five times per week for 16 weeks. It was hypothesized that the PTIP in addition to a regular training programme would significantly affect female soccer player perceptual-cognitive-motor capability as it was estimated with physiological attributes ([Formula: see text]O2max and agility) and motor performance soccer technical skills (juggling, heading, shooting, passing, and dribbling). All performance variables were measured prior and after the 16-weeks PTIP. Groups by Measures (2 × 2) ANOVAs with repeated measures on the second factor revealed that the intervention group decreased percent body fat and improved [Formula: see text]O2max and all technical skills in comparison to the control group after the PTIP ( p &lt; 0.05). The findings demonstrate the beneficial role of a proprioceptive training programme on both physiological attributes and technical skills in female soccer. Practical implications include the application of the intervention programme for monitoring and developing soccer players while also the use of the assessment tests to evaluate players.

Effects of Proprioception Training with Kinesio Taping of the Knee Joints on the Proprioception, Balance, and Gait in Stroke Patients: A Single-Blind Randomized Trials

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the effects of proprioception training with kinesio taping (PTKT) of the knee joints on the proprioception, balance and gait in Stroke Patients. The subjects were randomly divided into the PTKT group and control group, with subjects assigned to each group. In the PTKT group, proprioception training with kinesio taping was performed for 4 weeks. The control group was conducted in the same method except placebo kinesio taping. Proprioception error measure using the electrogoniometer.. The balance ability was measure using the pressure plate. Gait ability was evaluated using G-Walk. The proprioception error, balance ability, and gait were significantly more improved in the PTKT group than in the control group (p&lt;0.05). These findings suggest that proprioception training with kinesio taping of the knee joints for proprioception, balance and gait in stroke patients.

Effect of proprioceptive training on lower back muscle performance in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain: a randomized controlled trial

IntroductionThis study was conducted to investigate the impact of proprioceptive training in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain on lower back muscle performance.MethodsOverall, 43 participants of both genders (28 females and 15 males) with chronic non-specific low back pain aged 18–26 years were randomly assigned to 2 groups (A and B). Group A (&lt;i&gt;n&lt;/i&gt; = 22) received proprioceptive training and conventional strengthening and stretching exercises 3 times per week for 8 weeks. Group B (&lt;i&gt;n&lt;/i&gt; = 21) received conventional strengthening and stretching exercises 3 times per week for 8 weeks. To assess lower back muscle performance (peak torque) and the repositioning error of the lumbar spine, a Biodex System 3 Pro isokinetic dynamometer was used. A pressure pain algometer served to measure the pain level, and the functional level was evaluated with the Arabic version of Oswestry Disability Index. All subjects’ outcomes were assessed before and after treatment. For statistical analysis, mixed ANOVA was conducted to investigate the effect of treatment.ResultsA statistically significant effect (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; &lt; 0.0001) of treatment and time was revealed in both groups for all measured variables. Between-group analysis implied a higher improvement in post-intervention results in group A (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; &lt; 0.05).ConclusionsThis study indicated improvement in both groups, but adding proprioceptive training to conventional therapy resulted in more improvement in all measured variables.

The efficiency of proprioceptive training in preventing injuries to team athletes: A systematic review

The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of proprioceptive training in the prevention of lower extremity injuries, especially the ankle and knee joint, in team athletes. PRISMA recommendations were applied for this research. PubMed, ScienceDirect, and BioMed Central were used to identify relevant studies. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database-PEDro scale. Only 7 research met the eligibility criteria, and their outcomes were presented. Proprioceptive training has been shown to be very effective in preventing ankle injuries, especially in recurrent ankle sprains. However, in 3 of 4 studies lacked the effects of proprioceptive training in the prevention of knee and ACL injuries. Based on the results of the analyzed research, I can conclude that proprioceptive training is a very effective training tool in the prevention of ankle sprains in the population of team athletes, but proprioceptive training is not sufficient as the only training component in preventing knee injuries.

Here, the noteworthy fact is that all those meta-analytic investigations have been conducted including almost every of the previously carried out valid and authentic RCTs following rigorous methodology.

Similar Outcomes and Satisfaction of the Proprioceptive versus Standard Training on the Knee Function and Proprioception, Following the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Background: Patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries have poorer proprioception than people without such injuries. The effects of proprioceptive training on knee functionality and proprioceptive improvement after ACL reconstruction is still unclear. Methods: The research material consisted of 40 patients after ACL reconstruction. Of the 40 patients, 20 of them were rehabilitated with a standard program and 20 with additional proprioceptive exercises. The subjective and the objective scores were evaluated. Results: No differences were found between the proprioceptive versus the conservative postoperative rehabilitation in the functional nor in the proprioception outcomes of the operated limbs. Conclusions: There is no advantage to function in doing proprioceptive rehabilitation exercises following the ACL reconstruction, when compared with a traditional strengthening program.

Effects of proprioceptive training on ankle muscle strength in fencers: A clinical trial

BackgroundFencing is a combat sport, which depends of lower limbs muscular strength and neuromuscular function. Because of that, approximately half of all injuries occur in lower limbs, especially in ankle. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the influence of a twelve-week proprioceptive training program on ankle muscular strength and muscular balance in fencers. MethodsThe study was a clinical trial, with 19 fencing athletes from 14 to 35-year-old. The main outcome was ankle invertors, evertors, plantiflexors and dorsiflexors muscular strength and ankle muscle balance. The study was performed in six stages: familiarization of muscular strength test in isokinetic dynamometer; pre-intervention; intervention; post-intervention; three- and six-months follow-up. At pre-intervention stage, the muscular strength was evaluated. At intervention stage, the athletes performed 12-week proprioceptive training program, three times a week. At post-intervention, three- and the six-months follow-ups, same pre-intervention test was performed. ResultsThe proprioceptive training improved front leg ankle dorsiflexor strength at three- and six-months follow-ups compared to pre-intervention. Furthermore, training increased the front leg dorsiflexors/plantiflexors conventional ratio at three- and six-months follow-ups compared to pre-intervention; and evertors/invertors conventional ratio at three-months follow-up compared to pre-intervention; and evertors/invertors functional ratio at post-intervention and three- and six-months follow-ups compared to pre-intervention. ConclusionsThe improvement and/or maintenance of ankle muscle strength occurred in intervention group seems to be due to stimulus provided by proprioceptive training, with ankle dorsiflexors being the most stimulated group.

The effect of proprioceptive training on postural control in people with diabetes: A randomized clinical trial comparing delivery at home, under supervision, or no training

Objective: Analyze postural control in the bipedal position as well as during gait and functional tests in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus after supervised and unsupervised proprioceptive training. Design: A three-group randomized controlled trial. Setting: Physiotherapeutic Resources Lab, Department of Health Sciences, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo Subjects: Eighty patients with type 2 diabetes allocated to three groups: control, home training, and supervised training. Interventions: The supervised and home training groups performed two weekly sessions of proprioceptive exercises for 12 weeks. The control group was not submitted to any of treatment. Main measures: Bipedal balance, gait, and performance on functional tests were evaluated before and after 12 weeks using the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest) and the force plate. Results: No significant improvements were found regarding postural control, gait, or performance on the functional tests, as evidenced by the inter-group comparisons of the total BESTest score [control: 90.7 (81.5–92.6); home training: 85.2 (77.8–90.3); supervised training: 88.4 (82.6–91.4), P > 0.05] as well as the tests performed on the force plate (P > 0.05). The clinical effect size of the proposed intervention was less than 0.2, demonstrating no effect for the main outcome variable evaluated by the “Sensory Orientation” item of the BESTest and by the mCTSIB (pressure plate). Conclusions: The proposed proprioceptive training did not lead to improvements in postural control in patients with type 2 diabetes with no clinical signs of diabetic distal polyneuropathy when analyzed using the BESTest clinical evaluation and a force plate. The Effect of Proprioceptive Training on Core Muscles Strength and Single Leg Balancing Ability in Youth Soccer Players

&#x0D; Core stability and the ability to balance have both a critical role in today’s modern soccer. Majority of injuries originated from the weakness and inefficient strength of core musculature and the kinetic chain. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effect of a three month proprioceptive training programme on core stability and the ability to balance. We hypothesized that both of the skills might improve by the end of the 12-week exercise program. We set up a group involving 15 players, who regularly participated in a weekly 40 minutes special proprioceptive training routine. The control group hasn’t attended any additional strengthening workout session. The youngsters executed a fitball balancing task, in a seated position, and the so-called Stork-test. Before the 3-month exercise program, we implemented a pre-, at the end of the program a post-test. According to our results, we may conclude that we had measured a significant difference only in the Fitball-test when players executed the single leg balancing test (Stork-test), we haven’t observed any significant difference.

Effect of Proprioceptive Training on Fear of Re-Injury and Functional Performance in Athletes with Lateral Ankle Sprain (LAS)

Introduction Lateral ankle sprain LAS is most frequently accounted musculoskeletal injury characterized by pain swelling and tenderness on the lateral aspect of ankle joint that is caused due to excessive inversion of foot at a high velocity which can lead to loss of function decrease movement and painful limping. The injury also has impact on psychological and physiological aspects that can further affect decrease physical activity thus leading to functional instability.Materials and methods A total of 30 male subjects within the age group of 18-35 years with the history of lateral ankle sprain more than once on the same limb positive talar and anterior drawer test were assigned randomly in two groups after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. They participated in 4 weeks of intervention for 3 times a week in focus to fear of re-injury and functional performance. Experimental group performed strengthening exercise with proprioceptive training while control group performed only strengthening exercises. Tampa scale of kinesiophobia TSK functional performance tests FPT and visual analog scale VAS were used to assess fear of re-injury functional performance and pain respectively prior and post treatment.Results Proprioceptive training with strengthening exercises and strengthening exercises only on fear of re-injury and functional performance in athletes with LAS showed statistically significant improvement individually within both the group plt0.001 and while comparing in between the groups plt0.05.Conclusion Study showed improvement in both the groups. Statistical analysis indicated that subjects who received strengthening exercises with proprioceptive training was more effective than strengthening exercises onlyTake home message Any ligament injuries especially lateral ligament of ankle that undergoes recurrent injuries should be assessed about mechanical and psychological aspect of athlete which also can be addressed by incorporating graded forms of proprioceptive and strengthening exercises in rehabilitation.

The effects of proprioceptive training on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction rehabilitation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of proprioceptive training on knee function and proprioception following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Data sources: PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, Ovid, EBMSCO-host, ScienceDirect, CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data and CBM were searched until 2nd October 2020. Review methods: Trials with proprioceptive training for patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were included. Study screening, data extraction, risk of bias and quality assessments were performed independently by two researchers. We performed a stratified analysis based on the quality of the study. Sensitivity analyses were performed if the heterogeneity was high. Results: Seventeen trials with 878 participants were included, and 12/17 with low quality. After stratified analysis, the pooled effect of high-quality studies showed significant improvement for proprioceptive training group in range of motion (P < 0.05, I2 = 0%), but no differences in Cincinnati knee rating system score (P > 0.05, I2 = 83%), hop test (P>0.05, I2 = 0%) and proprioception (P = 0.17, I2 = 77%) compared to conventional training group; while the pooled effect of low-quality studies showed significant differences in knee functional improvement (P < 0.00001, I2 = 69%), but no difference in proprioception (P > 0.05, I2 = 84%) between two groups. The pooled effect of all studies showed a significant benefit in both function and proprioception. Conclusion: The effects of proprioceptive training on knee functional and proprioceptive improvement after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is mixed. It is more likely that proprioceptive training in high-quality studies has few detectable effects and that low-quality studies show an effect because of an unconscious bias. A large well designed high-quality study needs to be undertaken in the future.

Effect of proprioceptive training in male soccer players

Soccer is one of most popular and practiced sports. Although, we can establish its dynamic character as a determining factor that injuries to occur. Although, the majority of injuries are caused by contacts or impacts, a wide part of then are caused by receptions after jumping and changes of direction own of this sport. Here, we show the importance of a proprioceptive program to avoid injuries in football that shows its practical applicability in daily training. Our approach is based on important scientific research of different collective sports. In addition, we organize the training following the fundamental principles of training. In this sense, specific materials are used (unstable platforms, fitballs, etc.) and exercise with real applicability to the game that will provide the player with optimal a rapid response to a possible injury. Our work attempts to demonstrate that intervention carried out would have a preventive effect on the frequency of football injuries, providing effective responses and improvements in strength, coordination, balance, reaction time to specific sports situations. Lastly, we also want to highlight the importance of the multidisciplinary work of doctors, trainers, physical trainers, adapters and physiotherapist ass an essential factor to minimize the number of injuries.

Effects of Proprioceptive Training on Agility Performance in Male Football Players

Background and Purpose: Football is a high intensity intermittent sport which requires the successful andeffective execution of the technical skill like agility, change of direction, acceleration, deceleration, suddenstops and shots largely depends on the football players’ ability to control their balance and to adapt betterand faster to their ever changing bodily postures and positions in the pitch. So to maximize the footballperformance the possible strategy could be proprioceptive training. Hence, the purpose of this research wasto see the effects of proprioceptive training on agility performance in male football players.Method: 90 football players participated were randomly selected and divided in two groups, experimental(n=45) and control group (n=45). Experimental group underwent Proprioceptive training on bosu ball withtheir regular football training program and control group underwent regular football training program.Athletes were trained for 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Agility assessment at pre and post intervention wasdone for all subjects using T-agility test.Results: The results revealed a significant differences in comparison between pre and post agility forexperimental group with p-value 0.000 (&lt; 0.05) and insignificant difference for control group with p-value0.220 (&gt; 0.05).Conclusion: Proprioceptive training was effective in decreasing the agility time in male football players.
