The effect of occupational characteristics of Pearl River Delta front line nurses on job burnout

Objective To investigate the effect on occupational failure and psychological withdraw behavior of group occupational characteristics in nurses of Pearl River Delta. Methods Questionnaire approach including demographic variables, job autonomy of occupational characteristics, work routinization, occupational exposure risk, occupational stress, occupational failure and psychological withdraw behavior were investigated in clinical nurses in 20 hospitals of Pearl River Delta. Results Group occupational characteristics in nurses influence directly on the psychological withdraw behavior. Occupational failure was partly involve in the relationships such as job autonomy of occupational characteristics and psychological withdraw behavior, work routinization and psychological withdraw behavior, occupational exposure risk and psychological withdraw behavior, occupational stress and psychological withdraw behavior. Conclusions Relative to other professions, group occupational characteristics in nurses cause higher occupational failure rate, and the psychological withdraw behavior in nurses is obviously. Attention should be taken from organizational leadership level to personal level. It is eager to take appropriate measures to relieve the occupational failure in nurses. Long and Healthy Careers? The Relationship between Occupation and Health and its Implications for the Statutory Retirement Age

This paper investigates the relationship between occupation and health, and confirms that – also in the Netherlands in recent years – workers on a lower step of the occupational ladder on average report worse health, have a higher probability of disability and die earlier than workers in higher occupations. We sketch a theoretical framework to better understand the mechanisms underlying these disparities. Using the core insights derived from this model on selection and behavioral responses to changing workplace conditions, we review and assess the economic literature to date on occupation and health. After identifying the difficulties encountered in estimating causal effects of occupational characteristics on mental and physical health, we discuss how future research may try to overcome some of the crucial identification issues. We relate our findings to current policy issues with respect to occupational safety and the statutory retirement age, and discuss how future research could contribute to improved policy advice.

The Effects of Occupational Characteristics on the Experience and Expression of Anger in the Workplace

This article examines the relationships among extensive interaction with others on the job, occupational status, and the experience and expression of anger in the workplace using data from the 1996 General Social Survey and occupational characteristic measures from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. The findings indicate that individuals who spend much of their time interacting with others at work report experiencing workplace anger more frequently than other workers. The expression of anger was found to be associated with interacting with people at work, occupational status, and relative status. Individuals who deal with people at work are likely to discuss their experienced anger with someone other than the anger target, whereas individuals working in highly esteemed occupations are more likely than lower status workers to confront the target of their anger directly.

Returns to Skill, Compensating Differentials, and Gender Bias: Effects of Occupational Characteristics on the Wages of White Women and Men

A regression model with fixed-effects and national individual-level panel0 data (1966-81) is used to decompose the sex gap in pay. In accordance with neoclassical predictions from human capital theory, net positive returns to individuals' education and experience and to occupations' cognitive and physical skills are found. While sex differences in experience have large effects on the sex gap skill contributes little to the gap. In accordance with cultural feminist predictions, negative returns to being in an occupation with a higher percentage of females or requiring more nurturant social skill are found. These forms of gendered valuation contribute significantly to the sex gap in pay. In contrast to the neoclassical prediction of compensating differentials, the analysis did not find consistently positive effects for onerous physical conditions, nor did these have much effect on the gap.

Occupational Characteristics and Males' Role Performance in the Family

A review of the literature linking men's occupational activities to their performance of marital and parental roles shows a number of intriguing relationships. The usual dichotomization of occupational and family role demands is questioned in the discussion which focuses on the effect of occupational characteristics on the male's role performance in the family. The man's participation in the family initially appears to depend upon his holding some sort of job. Beyond this, such occupational characteristics as job salience, the synchronization of its demands with those of the family, the overlap in personnel and ecological location between family and work settings all affect intrafamily dynamics. A GREAT deal has been written on the differentiation of work from family roles in modern industrial societies. The general separation in time and space of family and occupational role performance is readily apparent. In addition, the formal requirements of the work group are often at variance with those of the family. Increasingly men, and women too, are playing their occupational roles in settings with bureaucratic characteristics. Here there are a number of supervisory levels.
