Effects of solvatomorphism, the nature of a chelating ligand synthon and a counterion on the single crystal XRD structure and SMM properties of paramagnetic monocapped cobalt(II) tris-pyrazoloximates.

A series of monocapped cobalt(II) tris-pyrazoloximates was obtained through the template condensation of the corresponding pyrazoloxime, phenylboronic acid and a suitable cobalt(II) halogenide. Comparing 3-acetylpyrazoloxime versus its methine-containing homolog, the former produced cobalt(II) clathrochelates in substantially higher yields due to the electron donating effect of the methyl substituent, increasing the N-donor ability of its oxime group. Their less N-donor analog with the electron acceptor trifluoromethyl group did not form cobalt(II) complexes of this type. In all their solvent-free and solvent-containing crystals, the encapsulated cobalt(II) ion adopted a high-spin state, as gauged by the Co-N bond lengths of 2.112(4)-2.188(9) Å, and was located almost in the center of its CoN6-coordination polyhedron. Their CoN6-polyhedra had an almost ideal trigonal-prismatic (TP) geometry with distortion angles φ below 4°. This TP-like geometry was assisted by hydrogen bonding between their NH groups and the apical counterion. The absence of methyl groups makes them close to an ideal TP. In contrast, stronger N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds occurred in the methyl-containing complex, while the Co-N bond lengths stayed the same at 2.144(2) Å on average. In its solvates with benzene, chloroform and acetone, there is a clear tendency for φ to decrease from 2.7(3)° to 0.47(13)°. The comparable effects of the ribbed methyl substituents, the cross-linking counterion and the lattice solvent on their molecular geometry were observed; the larger the distortions from an ideal TP geometry, the stronger the hydrogen bonds to the corresponding apical halogenide anion. The analysis of the experimental AC- and DC-magnetometry data for their fine-crystalline samples suggests that the passing from the derivative of the methyl-substituted synthon to that of its methine-containing homolog caused a substantial decrease in the magnetic susceptibility value χT and an increase in the QTM contribution to the magnetic relaxation. The effect of a cross-linking halogenide counteranion on the Orbach remagnetization barrier is greater than that of the solvatomorphism of their crystals.

Effect of a single methyl substituent on the electronic structure of cobaltocene studied by computationally assisted MATI spectroscopy.

Metallocenes represent archetypical organometallic compounds playing key roles in various fields of fundamental and applied chemistry. Many of their unique properties arise from low ionization energies (IE) which can be tuned by introducing substituents into the rings. Here we report the first mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrum of a methylmetallocene, (Cp')(Cp)Co (Cp' = η5-C5H4Me, Cp = η5-C5H5). The presence of a single Me group allows us to study the "pure" effect of methylation without the mutual influence of substituents. The MATI technique provides an extremely high accuracy in determining the adiabatic IE of (Cp')(Cp)Co which equals 5.2097(6) eV. The effect of a Me group on the IE of cobaltocene appears to be 36% stronger than that in bis(η6-benzene)chromium. The MATI spectrum of (Cp')(Cp)Co shows a rich vibronic structure from which vibrational frequencies of the free ion are determined. This information provides a solid basis for testing the quality of quantum chemical calculations. Various levels of the DFT and coupled cluster computations are used to describe the structural and electronic transformations accompanying the detachment of an elctron from (Cp')(Cp)Co. New aspects of the methyl substituent influence on the potential energy surfaces, as well as on the inhomogeneous changes in charge density and electrostatic potential caused by ionization, are discussed.

Effect of methyl substituent on adamantane pyrolysis at atmospheric and high pressure: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Adamantane derivatives, as promising high-density fuels, have been widely concerned in fields of volume-limited aerospace vehicles due to high density, heat of combustion and thermal oxidation stability. To reveal insights into their high-temperature decomposition behaviors, an experimental and theoretical investigation of adamantane (A) and 1-methyl adamantane (1-MA) pyrolysis was performed in a flow tube reactor at atmospheric to high pressure. Over twenty species were detected and identified, including C1-C5 light hydrocarbons, C5-C7 cyclic olefins as well as C6-C12 aromatics. The favorable decomposition channels of A and 1-MA are proposed and the effects of fuel structure characteristics and pressures on product formation behaviors are revealed. For the primary decomposition of A and 1-MA, the contributions of reaction types exhibit the obvious dependence on the pressures and temperatures, involving the unimolecular C-C dissociations by ring-opening, CH3-elimination as well as H-abstractions by H and CH3 attacking. Considering methyl-substitution weakens dissociation energies of C-C and C-H bonds and leads more H-abstraction sites, 1-MA shows a higher pyrolysis reactivity than A. The effects of structure characteristics are also embodied in the formation of newly chain-branched unsaturated species and the concentrations of common small hydrocarbons and aromatics. Compared to A decomposition, the methyl substituent in 1-MA promotes the emergence of 1-butene, 2-methyl-1-butene, mesitylene, methylindane and methylnaphthalene, and increases the concentrations of methane, 2-methylpropene and xylene isomers, formed via β-scission, hydrogen transfer, isomerization and dehydrogenation routes of fuel radicals. Meanwhile, more methyl-substitutions accelerate the decomposition of alkyl-adamantanes and pyrolysis activity follows by a sequence of dimethyl-adamantane > methyl-adamantane > adamantane, boosting the production of methyl-specific species.

Adsorption dynamics of benzene derivatives onto the surface of hydroxylated silica upon photoexcitation: Effect of halogen and methyl substituents

Adsorption of toxic substances is an important research field. In this work, the adsorption dynamics of halogenated and methylated benzenes onto hydroxylated silica upon photoexcitation has been investigated theoretically. The intermolecular interaction between the hydroxy (OH) group and the π electron density at the center of the benzene ring was also a major subject. In the ground state, the order of calculated adsorption energy was consistent with the OH⋅⋅⋅C bond strengths (SiO2–MeBe > SiO2–DimeBe > SiO2–BrBe > SiO2–ClBe > SiO2–FBe > SiO2–Be), implying this bond to be the major contributor to the adsorption. Upon photoexcitation to the first excited (S1) state by adsorbing shortwave-ultraviolet (UV), the OH⋅⋅⋅C bonds in each complex were strengthened with only the order of the bond strengths of SiO2–DimeBe and SiO2–MeBe reversed relative to the order in the ground state. In contrast to OH⋅⋅⋅C bonds, the OH⋅⋅⋅π bonds were all indicated to weaken upon photoexcitation. The results showed that the order of OH⋅⋅⋅π bond strengths in the S1 state to be SiO2–FBe > SiO2–BrBe > SiO2–DimeBe > SiO2–Be > SiO2–ClBe > SiO2–MeBe. However, the change in the corresponding adsorption energy was inconsistent with the order of OH⋅⋅⋅C bond strengths in the S1 state, due to the degree of weakening of the OH⋅⋅⋅π bond being greater than the degree of strengthening of the OH⋅⋅⋅C bonds. These changes were concluded to be induced by local excitation for each of the six complexes. This work has presented the photophysical dynamics of an adsorbent before and after photoexcitation.

A structure-property study for the effect of methyl substituents on the gas separation of spirodifluoranthene-based polymers of intrinsic microporosity

A simple methyl substitution on the structural building blocks of a PIM can alter its chain stacking behavior. Hence, we have introduced differing amounts of methyls on bulky and rigid spirodifluoranthene (EN) configured as two fluorenyl groups perpendicular to anthracene to obtain a series of spirodifluoranthene-based PIMs with increased intrinsic microporous, as demonstrated by nitrogen adsorption and enhanced gas permeability. The methyl substitution increased the free volume of polymer membranes, but the free volume does not increase in proportion to the number of methyl groups, and the increment is relatively slight at high methyl substitution amounts. Also, the effect of methyl substitution was closely associated with the molar contents of EN structures in PIMs. The series of polymers exhibited excellent CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, and O2/N2 gas separation performances, ranking among state-of-the-art polymeric materials for gas separation. Particularly, PIM-OMEN-40 exhibited the highest CO2 permeability, up to 12,431 barrer, which corresponds to 2.94 times higher than that of PIM-1 and along with comparable gas selectivity. Even after more than 100 days of aging, the series of PIMs still showed higher gas permeability and selectivity than fresh PIM-1, demonstrating great potential in separation areas for CO2 capture and storage, natural gas and biogas upgrading of prime importance to energy and the environment.

Effect of methyl substituents on the biodegradation of two-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in crude oil identified by aerobic biodegradation simulations

Existing studies determining the effects of substituted methyl groups on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation were mostly limited to an individual compound or a class of compounds. The simultaneous transformation of the multiple series of methyl-substituted two-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (61 compounds) in crude oil through laboratory simulations has been examined, including naphthalenes, fluorenes, biphenyls, and dibenzofurans. The biodegradation sequences were in the order of dimethylnaphthalenes > trimethylnaphthalenes > biphenyls > dibenzofurans, tetramethylnaphthalenes > pentamethylnaphthalenes > fluorenes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation was depending on both the number and the position of methyl substituents. For naphthalenes, fluorenes, biphenyls, and dibenzofurans, the more methyl groups in the parent compound, the more resistant it was to biodegradation. Among the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with the same number of methyl groups, the more ortho-methyl substitutes, the more challenging it was to be decomposed. In the case of dimethylnaphthalenes or trimethylnaphthalenes with the same number of methyl and ortho-methyl substituents, their biodegradability reduced as the number of α substituents increased. The number of ortho-methyl substituents had a greater impact than that of α/β substituents. The relative significance of these two factors has not been confirmed in previous studies.

Effect of methyl substituents, ring size, and oxygen on bond dissociation energies and ring-opening kinetics of five- and six-membered cyclic acetals

The demand for clean and highly efficient fuels stimulates the development of novel fuels for the next generation. With the emergence of new catalytic methods, the selective synthesis of cyclic acetals made them promising fuel candidates. The present work provides systematic and consistent calculations of bond dissociation energies for 1,3-dioxolane and 1,3-dioxane and their substituted derivatives. Rate constants of subsequent ring-opening reactions of the formed fuel radicals have been calculated to facilitate the understanding of initial fuel consumption pathways. We found that the CH bond on the carbon that is in between two oxygens will always be the weakest bond to be broken. The inclusion of two oxygens in the ring slightly changes the strain in the ring structure. However, the trend that the BDEs increase from five to six-membered ring species still exists in cyclic acetals. The reason is a smaller eclipsing strain in the five-membered radicals relative to the parent molecules. For the subsequent ring-opening reactions of the formed radicals, the radical site and the position of the substitution have a major impact. The results of our study facilitate a deeper understanding of the effect of methyl substituents, ring size, and oxygen on the reactivity of five- and six-membered cyclic acetals as well as provide accurate kinetic data for the mechanism development of these potential fuels.

Steric effect of di-lateral methyl substituent on the mesophase behavior of four-ring azo/ester/azo homologues

ABSTRACT Four series of azo/ester/azo four-rings homologues, namely, 4-substituted phenylazo-3-methyl phenyl-4′-n-alkoxy 3-methyl phenylazo benzoates (I n a-d), bearing two terminals substituents, the first is a compact polar group (X = methoxy, methyl, H and bromo) and the other terminal is an alkoxy group of varying chain length (n = 6 to 16), were prepared and their molecular structures confirmed. Their thermotropic behaviours were analysed with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarising optical microscopy (POM). TGA analysis revealed that the prepared materials are thermally stable within their mesophase temperature range. Irrespective of the polarity of X and/or the alkoxy chain length all compounds showed to display a nematic phase with high thermal stability and wide temperature range. The methoxy homologues showed to exhibit higher thermal stabilities. Comparing the nematic stability of the di-laterally dimethyl substituted (I n c) derivatives with X = CH3, with their previously reported mono-laterally methyl-substituted analogues (II n c) revealed that I nc homologues have thermal stabilities and mesophase temperature ranges lower than their corresponding analogues II n c. The effect of introducing the two lateral methyl groups on the extent of anisotropic polarisability of the whole molecule was discussed and their effect on the mesophase behaviour investigated. The photo-physical property was studied via UV-vis spectroscopy.

Determination of the semiexperimental equilibrium structure of 2-acetylthiophene in the presence of methyl internal rotation and substituent effects compared to thiophene.

The microwave spectra of thiophene and 2-acetylthiophene were recorded in the frequency range from 2 to 40 GHz using two molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometers. For 2-acetylthiophene, two conformers with a syn and an anti orientation of the S1-C2 and C6O bonds (with respect to the C2-C6 bond) were identified, and the syn-conformer was more stable. The spectra of the 34S- and 13C-isotopologues of syn-2-acetylthiophene were also assigned, and the semiexperimental equilibrium structure could be determined. Compared to thiophene, at the substitution position, the S1-C2 and C2C3 bond lengths both increase by about 0.007 Å, and the bond angle S1-C2C3 decreases by 0.06°, noticeably larger than the experimental uncertainties. A-E torsional splittings were observed due to internal rotation of the methyl group hindered by a barrier height of 330.187(35) and 295.957(17) cm-1 for the syn-conformer and the anti-conformer, respectively. Geometry and internal rotation parameters are compared with those of related thiophene derivatives, as well as those of furan and 2-acetylthiophene to gain a better understanding of structure determination in the presence of methyl internal rotation.

Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Novel Ruthenacarboranes Based on nido-[5-Me-7,8-C2B9H10]2− and nido-[5,6-Me2-7,8-C2B9H9]2− Dicarbollide Ligands

The effect of methyl substituents in the lower belt of dicarbollide ligands on the redox potential of ruthenacarboranes based thereof, as well as the ability of the metallacarboranes obtained to catalyze radical polymerization with atom transfer were studied. For this purpose, a new approach to the synthesis of closo-ruthenacarboranes based on substituted dicarbollide ligands was developed and six new complexes 3,3-(Ph2P(CH2)4PPh2)-3-H-3-Cl-9-Me-12-X-closo-3,1,2-RuC2B9H9, 3,3,8-(Ph2P(CH2)4PPh-μ-(C6H4-o))-3-Cl-9-Me-12-X-closo-3,1,2-RuC2B9H8 and 3,3,4,8-(Ph2P(CH2)4P-μ-(C6H4-o)2)-3-Cl-9-Me-9-X-closo-3,1,2-RuC2B9H7 (X = H, Me) were synthetized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and ESR spectroscopy and MALDI TOF mass-spectrometry. Comparison of the values of the redox potentials of the synthesized ruthenium complexes in 1,2-dichloroethane with the values previously found for the corresponding ruthenacarboranes based on the parent dicarbollide anion showed that the introduction of methyl substituents into the carborane cage led to a decrease in the redox potentials of the complexes, which made them more preferable catalysts for ATRP. Test experiments on the polymerization of MMA showed that the synthesized ruthenacarboranes were effective catalysts for ATRP, the most active being the complex with two methyl groups and two ortho-phenylenecycloboronated fragments.

Mesomorphic, optical, dielectric, and electro-optic properties of azo-ester materials: Effect of lateral methyl and terminal substituents

The effect of introducing a lateral methyl substituent and the two different alkoxy terminal groups on the mesophase behavior of three-benzene-ring molecular core of azo-ester compounds bearing 2-methylbutoxy unit on the opposite terminal side (C1–C6) were explored. Their structures were confirmed by several spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy). The mesomorphic properties of these compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. Except for the un-substituted terminals (C1 and C4), all other derivatives are liquid crystalline, exhibiting enantiotropic nematic liquid crystal phase. The alteration of the alkoxy chain length from methoxy to butoxy at the phenyl ester terminal group (ring A) for each set of laterally-neat and laterally methyl-substituted mesogens decreases the nematic temperature range. A decrease in the mesophase temperature range is also observed when a lateral methyl substituent is incorporated into phenylazo ring of the mesogenic core (ring C). Optical study demonstrated that their absorption spectra are identical in shape due to the structural similarities of the mesogenic core. The corresponding fluorescence spectra exhibited blue-emission with the laterally methyl substituted compounds having a relatively higher fluorescence intensity compared to that of its laterally un-substituted analogues. Furthermore, the laterally methyl-substituted derivatives were subjected to the planar alignment and their dielectric and electro-optic properties were investigated. The nematic phase of the aligned samples shows antiferroelectric switching behavior with spontaneous polarization, Ps ~ 5 μC/cm2.

Effect of methyl substituent in the fjord region on the conformational stability of aza[5]helicenes

Few derivatives of aza[5]helicenes were synthesized and characterized. Introduction of methyl group in the fjord region of aza[5]helicene gives sufficient conformational rigidity resulting in the formation of stable, resolvable enantiomers. The analysis of dimethyl aza[5]helicene on chiral HPLC columns indicate the presence of resolvable isomers. The compounds 1 and 15were further characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and computational analysis while their photophycial properties were studied.

Effects of lateral methyl and terminal substituents on thermal, mesomorphic and optical properties of azo-ester mesogens

Four azo-ester mesogens with lateral methyl were synthesized where these compounds are differed by the terminal substituents i.e. –H, –Cl, –Br and –CN. The compound with -H terminal substituent displayed nematic behavior with narrow mesophase range while electron-withdrawing groups terminated compounds exhibited mesophase behavior with wider nematic range. The presence of lateral methyl group and different terminal substituents used in this study could be utilized to generate anticipated mesophase. Their mesogenic behavior was also compared with previously investigated analogues and other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of lateral methyl group on the mesomorphism. Optical investigations demonstrated that their absorption spectra are identical in shape because of the structural similarities in the mesogenic unit whereas the fluorescence spectra exhibited blue emission and were red-shifted with the incorporation of terminal substituents. The synthesized azo-ester compounds could be potential candidate as fluorescent materials for practical applications such as organic light-emitting diode applications.

Computational investigation of molecular structures, spectroscopic properties and antitumor-antibacterial activities of some Schiff bases.

Molecular structures, spectroscopic properties (IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, UV-VIS), molecular electrostatic potential maps and some molecular properties (ionization energy, electron affinity, energy gap, hardness, electronegativity, electrophilicity index, static dipole moment and average linear polarizability) of three Schiff bases which are 2-((ethylamino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol (HL1), 2-((ethylamino) methyl)-6-methylphenol (HL2) and 2-((ethylamino)methyl)-6-chlorophenol (HL3) were computed at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level in aqueous phase. The effects of methoxy, methyl and chloro substituents on Schiff bases were examined and it was found that the electron donating property of methyl and chlorine substituents was higher than the methoxy substituent. In order to investigate the antitumor activities of Schiff bases were docked against the breast cancer (MCF7) cell line. Molecular docking results were compared with antitumor standard 5-fluorouracil. Antitumor activity of HL2 and HL3 molecule was found to be higher than HL1 against MCF-7 cell line. In addition, in order to predict the antibacterial activities of Schiff bases were docked against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Rv) cell line. Docking results were compared with the antibacterial reference N-(salicylidene)-2-hydroxyaniline. Antibacterial activity of HL2 and HL3 molecules was found to be higher than HL1. It is estimated that the binding of the electron donating group to the ortho position of the hydroxyl group in studied Schiff bases increases both antitumor and antibacterial activity.

Methylated derivatives of l-tyrosine in reaction catalyzed by l-amino acid oxidase: isotope and inhibitory effects.

l-Amino acid oxidase (LAAO) is widely distributed in nature and shows important biological activity. It induces cell apoptosis and has antibacterial properties. This study was designed to investigate the effect of methyl substituent on its activity as methylated derivatives of l-tyrosine, labelled with short-lived B+ emitters, have been used in oncological diagnostics. To study isotope effects in the oxidative deamination of O-methyl-l-tyrosine, the deuterated isotopomer, i.e. O-methyl-[2-2H]-l-tyrosine, was synthesized by isotope exchange, catalyzed enzymatically by tryptophanase. Isotope effects were determined using the spectrophotometric non-competitive method. The values of isotope effects indicate that the α-C-H bond cleavage occurs in the rate determining step of the investigated reaction and α-hydrogen plays a role in the substrate binding process at the enzyme active site. The inhibitory effect on LAAO activity was studied with α-methyl-l-tyrosine and N-methyl-l-tyrosine. The mode of inhibition was determined based on Lineweavear-Burk plots intersections. α-Methyl-l-tyrosine has been found a mixed type inhibitor of the investigated enzyme, whereas N-methyl-l-tyrosine is a non-competitive inhibitor of LAAO.

Effect of methyl substituent on the solubility of 1,4-benzoquinone derivatives in n-octanol/water system

The solubility of the compound is a crucial task for new drug design. Quinone is a promising candidate to develop as a new drug. In this research, the synthesis of 1,4-benzoquinone derivatives, that is, 2-(5-bromoamyl)-3,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2a) and 2-(5-bromoamyl)-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2b) were carried out by decarboxylation and insertion reaction of alkyl bromides. The product 2a and 2b are purified using SiO2 gel column chromatography and analyzed by UV-Visible, FT-IR, and NMR. The yield of 2a is 13.75%, and 2b is 4.04%. The solubility of 2a and 2b, expressed by log P, is measured in the n-octanol/water (3:7 (v/v)) system by the shake flask method. The log P of 2a and 2b are 2.99 and 1.36, respectively. It is showed that the log P of 2a is higher compared to 2b. The presence of two methyl substituents on the quinone ring of 2a supports the increase of hydrophobicity of the compound in the n-octanol/water system.

The effect of methyl and methoxy substituents on dianilines for a thermosetting polyimide system

4,4′-Methylenedianiline (MDA) is widely used in high-temperature polyimide resins, including polymerization of monomer reactants-15. The toxicity of MDA significantly limits the manufacturability using this resin. Modifying the substitution and electronics of MDA could allow for the reduction of toxicity while maintaining the high-performing properties of the materials derived from the modified MDA. The addition of a single methyl substituent, methoxy substituent, location of these substituents, and location of the amine relative to the phenolic bridge were modified as were other non-aniline diamines. Various anilines were condensed with paraformaldehyde under acidic conditions to yield dianilines. These dianilines and diamines were reacted with nadic anhydride and 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride in methanol to form the polyamic acid oligomers and heated at elevated temperature to form polyimide oligomers. It was found that the molecular weight of the oligomers derived from MDA alternatives was generally lower than that of MDA oligomers resulting in lower glass transition temperatures ( T gs) and degradation temperatures. Additionally, methoxy substituents further reduce the T g of the polymers versus methyl substituents and reduce the thermal stability of the resin. Methyl-substituted alternatives produced polyimides with similar T gs and degradation temperatures. The toxicity of the MDA alternatives was examined. Although a few were identified with reduced toxicities, the alternatives with properties similar to that of MDA also had high toxicities.

Regular/abnormal variation in the strength and nature of the halogen bond between H2Te and the dihalogens: Prominent effect of methyl substituents

The halogen‐bonded complexes between H2Te/Me2Te and the dihalogen molecules XY (XY = F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, ClF, ClBr, BrF, BrCl, BrI, IF, ICl, IBr) have been studied to investigate the dependence of its strength and nature on the halogen donor X and its adjoining atom Y, as well as the methyl groups in the electron donor. The interaction energy varies between −1.7 and − 43.5 kcal/mol, indicating that the Te atom in H2Te/Me2Te has a strong affinity for the dihalogen molecules. For the H2Te‐XY complex, the halogen bond is stronger for the heavier halogen donor X atom and the strong electron‐withdrawing group Y. However, for Me2Te‐XY, the halogen bond is stronger for the lighter halogen donor X atom. The H2Te/Me2Te‐F2 complex has the largest interaction energy, although the σ‐hole on F2 is the smallest in magnitude. In most of the complexes, the electrostatic and polarization contributions to the binding strength are similar in magnitude. However, for H2Te/Me2Te‐F2, the polarization contribution is much larger than the electrostatic contribution, with a significant contribution from charge transfer.
